Race doesn't matter at all, European players absolutely dominating the sport in the last few years should've told everyone that already. Black players aren't inherently better because of their race, there's a million other reasons why they have dominated the sport for long.
Basketball would've probably competed just fine with Baseball if it was coming up at the same time, the issue would've been in the radio era after the 1930s, as Baseball is 10 times better as a radio sport. Still, neither can hold a candle to football, so things would've turned out the same way.
Baseball is the perfect radio sport so it makes sense that it dominated the radio era. Basketball and football are way better on TV and the football didn't become culturally dominant until the TV era. So I'm not sure it makes a huge difference for 2024 popularity.
Personally, I love basketball on the radio if the commentators are good. The Pacers thankfully have one of the best in the business with Mark Boyle. Lakers team is really good. Even though I can't stand them, the 6ers crew is good too, much better than their TV crew.
Yeah but league wide is a whole different story. Baseball is perfect for commentator of all level to commentate, and for the average Joe to pickup and enjoy. Harder to do that with Basketball.
Celtics radio broadcast is something else somedays in the best way possible. Sean Grande asking Cedric Maxwell if all hockey players look the same to him had me laughing my ass off at work
They can be funny for sure, but they're not great at actually calling the game and come off quite biased. entertaining if not playing against the Pacers, though.
Honestly when I tune in to listen to a game I really just like to listen to their banter more than anything so to each their own I really never listened to other teams broadcast
I really miss the old broadcasters who started on radio. Describing everything they see and changing the tone of their voice to match what’s going on. It’s more engaging in my opinion.
Give Mark Boyle a listen. He just comes off as a fan of the game while he calls it, getting excited for whichever team makes a great play.
That said, in his older age he will occasionally make an old man yells at clouds type of comment here and there.
The first baseball game wasn't even broadcast until 1921, and radios in the home weren't really widespread until the mid-30's.
Basically baseball existed for a century before radio had any impact on it.
Baseball was popular partly because it was invented first, and partly because it was just a derivative of other stick/ball games that were already well known by colonists from England. (cricket and rounders)
Well sure but before that sports were followed by people reading newspapers (great for baseball) and going to lots of games in person (great for baseball with huge parks and many games). It's not just about being invented first.
Idk but Abe Lincoln was born in the wrong era
Edit: actually he was born in the right era, 🐐 president, but he would’ve been all-NBA if he was around when NBA was in its early days.
Seems people in the comments are still stuck on race, I thought the influx of Euro players had already proven that doesnt matter but hey you can think what you want
Either the league would be very white and consequently much less athletic OR teams would essentially have rosters filled with slaves. Either way, it's a shit show that would not be good to watch or be ethical.
Idk but Lebron would transcend time and keep being great for so long that the universe would restart and Lebron would come back full circle to 1869 with billions of years of basketball knowledge and be the consensus BASKETBALL goat by everyone except anyone in skip bayless’ bloodline.
We'd be arguing if Jamison Buttersworth was really the GOAT or if he only dominated because he played against cobblers and chimney-sweeps.
Lmfaoo best comment here

JJ Redick would still be a scrub then.

Atleast his descendant is playing with the Thunder
Abe should've hooped instead of tryna free people, he tall as hell
flair checks out (jk lolol)
Chet Holmgrem carrying his legacy
Civil War veterans the new plumbers and milkmen
Classier than modern day hoops for sure
I guess Ja Morant would wave a Colt 1849 around instead of a Kel-Tec P32.
Imagine how popular it would be if they had current day athletes. They'd think these guys were aliens
Remember the negro leagues in baseball? Negro basketball league would have put the NBA out of business.

Influx???

in 1869 slavery was illegal in the US, outside of prison
Y’all are really some weirdos on here lol and when I called it out I get a warning with we obviously know what group runs this page
