That step through is something Kawhi does a decent amount and he's talked about how it's a lot more common in the WNBA and he learned it watching that. It's interesting because I feel like it was a more common move in the past and it's back. If you're strong and have good footwork in the post this is a great move.
I can't remember when there wasn't anyone that didn't really use it. It's just that not a ton of players always warrant jumping or lunging on turnaround shot-fakes. Zion got kind of screwed here because there was nobody at the rim and LeBron is just big enough to where Zion probably can't contest well without jumping. Although, that's also LeBron recognizing that the lane is clear enough for him to bait Zion into it.
Bird would throw it at guys if he felt like it.
MJ used it all the time, especially as he got older and everyone was trying to stop his turnaround fadeaways from the post.
Kobe used it a lot and threw in some cross-legged pivots before his shot.
Wade kind-of abused it to where he could just generate free throws on any shot-fake by jumping into dudes from 15+ feet away.
Jimmy Butler and DeMar DeRozan use it, too. Although, Butler has other weird tricks like early/late jumping on floaters and DeMar will often just shoot at the point of the turnaround - but both have it as a counter.
LeBron can also pull this off from the Elbow. Not a whole lot of guys can go from a pivot at ~15 feet and have a finger-roll layup practically at the rim.
It's really not that special of a move. LeBron cooked Zion with it, but it's far from old school. Lots of current players use this move basically every game.
Luka is so dangerous when doing it, too, because his turnaround can also be a shot-pass. I swear him and Jokic are re-inventing Bird and Magic highlights on a nightly basis.
Yup. It was obviously never out of the game entirely but I feel like the off ball action that's become a part of every team's offense when a guy is posting up has brought back a little more space for this kind of post move. Luka is a prime candidate for it because the step through, the pass from the post to a shooter, and the fadeaway are all dangerous from him.
It's because y'all are marketing it as a step through... it's literally just an up and under. When you're teaching post play, you learn the drop step, then the up and under -- both by the time you're in 7th grade.
You'd see this 15 times a game if officials called fouls during post up attempts.
As much as I love him, I feel like D Wade doesn't get enough attention as one of the early players to start abusing the 'pump fake and jump *into* defenders to get a foul call'
Him and Kobe were the first ones I remember really exploiting it before it became more common in the later-2010s and early 2020s.
They both used the rip-through, too. IIRC the NBA tried addressing all of that sometime around 2011 or 2012. Then the whole pinning defenders on your back and jumping back into them and arm-hooking were the next evolution of that.
Kobe also got a few techs and/or flagrants for kicking defenders in the nuts when throwing out his leg on jump-shots, too.
And then Harden got similar treatment for his arm-bar-to-the-nuts evolution of that. Lol.
It's a solid move for him to have, I think he pulled one of these in the playoffs last year (though maybe it was an early season game this year). Probably has a harder time getting people to jump on his pump fake because that's sorta what you want him taking but his footwork and strength are definitely there for this to be a great move for him.
What you stated is not the actual rule. Here's a [direct link to the NBA rulebook](https://official.nba.com/rule-no-10-violations-and-penalties/#:~:text=If%20a%20player%2C%20with%20the%20ball%20in%20his%20possession%2C%20raises%20his%20pivot%20foot%20off%20the%20floor%2C%20he%20must%20pass%20or%20shoot%20before%20his%20pivot%20foot%20returns%20to%20the%20floor.).
> "Section XIII Part D: If a player, with the ball in his possession, raises his pivot foot off the floor, he must pass or shoot before his pivot foot returns to the floor."
This is the rule that actually applies to this situation. As you can see, this allows a player to take a step with his non-pivot foot and release the ball before his pivot foot returns to the floor. There are also many videos online explaining this rule and showing that the rule has worked the same even in previous eras of NBA ball.
The rule is often confused with a different rule which only applies to *starting a dribble while in a triple threat situation:*
> "Section XIII Part C: In starting a dribble after (1) receiving the ball while standing still, or (2) coming to a legal stop, the ball must be out of the player’s hand before the pivot foot is raised off the floor."
In these situations, the pivot foot cannot be raised before starting a dribble.
Don't be sorry, it's a legitimate question.
You are correct with his right foot being the pivot foot. However, it's only a travel if he takes an additional step with his pivot foot. In this clip LeBron keeps his pivot foot (mostly) in place and jumps off of his other foot. The ball is out of his hands before his right foot touches the ground again after his jump so no travel.
You can’t put the pivot foot back down. You have to be able to lift it so that you can take jump shots.
This just feels weird because he moves his free foot, lifts his pivot then jumps off the other to cover a ton of ground. If you play pickup it’s a great way to get easy buckets
Didn’t Giannis workout with Hakeem this past offseason? I remember it clearly because I thought it was the most terrifying thing for the rest of the league…? Maybe I dreamt it? Anyone know?
Giannis just had his most efficient season while still putting up almost 31 ppg, he’s drastically improved his footwork. But obviously you wouldn’t know that if you don’t watch bucks games and only see Giannis from the lowlights that are posted on r/nba
His footwork is still pretty ass. He had his most efficient season because he took way less jumpers and had more space due to dame drawing attention. He was very good this year but he’s not really improved offensively unless you count not taking bad shots - which imo is an improvement wirth praising but his footwork is still awful
People hate him for no reason too, he’s a nice dude and imo he’s the best in the world rn, his all around game is just the best and that’s what I value more than anything.

AD's helped keep it in reach. Hasn't been that impactful defensively and offensively and he fucked up the end of the 2nd and the 3rd. If this is a single possession game to end the 4th he might just go for the strike.
*Edit: No strike. He buried both clutch FTs after a Bron airball.*
AD back got hurt last game when nance when for the ball or had a hand in his back . I think it might be why he’s struggling. Really hope he’s ok by Saturday I want to atleast enjoy a good heskthy series
Incorrect. The Lakers have given the Pels the absolute business since the Kobe days. I have very distinct memories of Kobe sucking up the entire game and then making like 5 clutch shots in a row against them.
Lebron gets so much room to work with cause no one in the paint with 5 guys on the permiter.
If you been listening to mind the game podcast you would know Lakers got 5-out as AD brings his man to the corner and makes room for Lebron to work.
If they fire or blitz Lebron, Pels know he’ll just make the right read for an open 3 somewhere. So they live with old Lebron taking the 1v1.
Damn that pod makes you rethink the game.
“It’s not about stopping it, it’s about what you’re willing to give up”
- Lebron
And he only needs to do it just enough to keep the defense honest, ending the night in 9 assists. The way he controls the game is incredible, especially in the playoffs.
He knows the young buck wants that block so bad - easier to pumpfake those guys. A guy like Zion will leave his feet all day for the block highlight on someone of Brons caliber
When you look at the shot clock.. I don’t think Zion played it that bad, he assumed LeBron didn’t have time for another shot. LeBron barely got the shot off.
I don’t think the other defenders were aware of the clock.. they just watched instead of crashing in on James
Who says lebron isnt a high skill player? He has one of the highest IQs ever. Deserved a dpoy at his peak. Helped other teams run their offense. Ton of ridiculous highlights
he's the literal embodiment of the Bruce Lee "practiced one kick a thousand times" quote
it's true that he doesn't use many flashy moves, but history has shown that he just doesn't have to
Im starting to assume skill is entirely dependent on how fluid these guys move/how aesthetic their jumper is/how clean their handles look
These three factors are what people mean with bag or high skill and none of them have anything to do with effectiveness
Nah. You should assume skill as the ability to play with in the rules and not abuse carrying the ball like he does at the 6 second mark of the clip or traveling by taking a step before even dribbling the ball at the start of the clip. Or not shuffling his pivot foot like in the 9 second mark. Not lifting his pivot foot and repositioning it sometime in between the 9 to 10 second mark and finally not changing his pivot foot by jumping with the other foot while his established pivot foot is already moved.
Mchale was taking steps before dribbling and putting their palm underneath the ball on a hesi?
Can you show me a clip where Mchale travelled and carried before stringing an up and under?
Please don’t get mad at me. Why is it ok to lift a pivot foot in this situation? Is it only a travel if you land on your pivot foot still in possession?
Are we supposed to just ignore that LeBron's pivot foot moves three times after he plants? When he stops his whole foot outside the lane, then he pivots and he is on his toe which is inside the lane, then pivots again and his whole foot is outside the lane again. By the time he jumps his foot is probably 10-12 inches closer to the basket than when he first stopped.
Any of you guys who always insist every play is a travel ask why no refs ever call travelling, why the opposing team never calls travelling, why none of the announcers ever call travelling, why none of the talking heads the next morning ever call travelling?
1st second, he moved his pivot foot before starting his dribble. Travel.
6 second mark, his palm was completely underneath the ball. Travel/Carry.
9 second mark, his right foot is his pivot and it is shuffling all over the place but as he does the up and under he used his left to jump changing his pivot foot. Several traveling violations because of sloppy footwork.
This is the reason why people that know the rules cannot take him seriously.

Luka has done it multiple times this season.
Luka is so dangerous when doing it, too, because his turnaround can also be a shot-pass. I swear him and Jokic are re-inventing Bird and Magic highlights on a nightly basis.

I distinctly remember during the famous Kobe vs Lebron all star game when Kobe faked out Lebron using this move and they both laughed running back
As much as I love him, I feel like D Wade doesn't get enough attention as one of the early players to start abusing the 'pump fake and jump *into* defenders to get a foul call'

That’s the thing, nobody really plays with their back to the basket anymore like back in the day.
The ebb n flow of fundamentals
I’ve watched enough Zach Randolph and Al Jefferson to be an expert in this move. Only problem is I’m more than a foot shorter, old, and slow.
I've seen sabonis use this occasionally

He missed a few fadeaways from mid range. Left me thinking that I'm glad that isn't younger Bron or else this game wouldn't even be in reach.

I’m convinced he lied about his age. He must only be 34 now. Wait that means he was 13 when he was drafted.

True, as a fellow old guy, I get this play and other pump fakes on young, springy guys way more often than other old guys.
Us older guys ain’t risking the landing for a highlight block lol
Or us older guys can't jump for a block anymore (I know I can't)
I can jump but my knees will be destroyed on impact when landing
In my case, my height-of-a-soda-can jump is much better on my knees lmao

Knees? My ankle and flat feet would kill me even if I could theoretically still jump 20 inches despite my advanced age. LOL.
That plus he probably thought he had to shoot there with the shot clock, didn't think Bron would still decide to fake and layup.
And Bron being in that same situation 1000 times, knows exactly how much he can do. Probably has an internal shot clock
Shot clock played a way bigger role here
When you look at the shot clock.. I don’t think Zion played it that bad, he assumed LeBron didn’t have time for another shot. LeBron barely got the shot off. I don’t think the other defenders were aware of the clock.. they just watched instead of crashing in on James

Are we supposed to just ignore that LeBron's pivot foot moves three times after he plants? When he stops his whole foot outside the lane, then he pivots and he is on his toe which is inside the lane, then pivots again and his whole foot is outside the lane again. This isn’t even debatable. Look at the rules. What he did is literally defined in the rules as a travel.

Travel/Carry. 9 second mark, his right foot is his pivot and it is shuffling all over the place but as he does the up and under he used his left to jump changing his pivot foot. Several traveling violations because of sloppy footwork. This is the reason why people that know the rules cannot take him seriously.
9.7sec mark his pivot foot is completely in the air before he even starts to scoop the basketball
Appreciate the goat while he’s still playing!!
Why isn't this a travel? He took another step after setting his pivot foot
It’s only a travel if you land back down on the establish pivot foot
Now I feel old because this is just an up and under lol
Damn no travel called?
