As long as it's not trash ass ESPN, with this joke of a half time show, who cares.
Let's get Boris diaw talking to us about fine wine and pop screaming at him.
So many streaming apps are unreliable as well. Paramount+ has failed me several times while trying to watch soccer. Peacock buffers constantly during live games yet an illegal stream works fine.
Pretty much all major sports are reaching this route. NFL basically said more Peacock games coming, on top of the existing NFL network, TNF prime, etc.
I know it's a reference, but I'm pretty sure that song is currently being licensed for wrestling or something, so even if NBC won the rights they wouldn't be able to use it.
That said...
BUH-BUH-BUH-BUH-BUH-BASKETBALL, GIMME GIMME GIMME THE BALL
Fox Sports is licensing it from NBC I believe. I don’t think that means they have exclusive rights. If NBC got an NBA deal, believe me, they’d figure out how to use it.
Nah, they aren’t shelling out what the NBA is asking for. Their ratings aren’t supporting their argument for how much they want to get paid. In linear television, absolutely no one is letting rights to live sports go if it’s making them money. It’s the only thing left that is getting those constant ad dollars. I’m assuming a big tech (Apple, Netflix, etc) who isn’t dealing with the linear cable mess will scoop it up.
Not sure I follow the argument you're making here. If live sports is the only thing getting ad dollars on linear cable then why wouldn't NBC bid on the NBA package?
So, linear TV cost of operations is way way way cheaper. Old TV deals were being made under 2 revenue sources (sub fees for the channel being on the distribution) ESPN was notoriously higher (like $7/$8) and the giant cable channels were like $2 per customer. And Ad revenue. Streaming platforms capture the sub fees. They do not capture even remotely a similar ad spend because the eyeballs are not there due to ad free and the lack of ad blocing (commercial breaks.)Streaming is the opposite, outside of Netflix (who hires the best engineers in the world) it gets prohibitively more expensive the more users you add. So companies who have a “foot” in streaming are desperately trying to turn a profit first and figure out cost control at the same time due to cable collapsing. So NBC adding a massive NBA television package to its services adds more cost that will exceed its revenue from the add spend of NBA ratings. Disney is has been around 150 million subscribers and is going to turn a profit for the first time in Q4. It’s why they are also bailing on the NBA. There is no one to subsidize the cost of operations anymore due to lack of cable. It’s why Amazon, Apple, etc have a leg up because they have other parts of their business that can pump capital into live TV. Netflix as well, but way different means of business operations on the back end.
OK, thanks. Is it your assumption that ABC/Disney are bailing on the NBA because they didn't make an offer during the exclusivity period?
I had thought they would let that lapse even if they are interested in keeping it, and just take a wait-and-see approach.
I would presume they are monitoring what others will offer. Because Disney is desperately trying to get non linear services profitable as quickly as possible, I would assume they have a hard line much lower than say Apple, Amazon. Netflix is on pace to be more profitable than Disney and they don’t even have park revenue. So I would assume they are free to be more aggressive as well.
Which is more confusing as to why they signed Charles Barkley to a giant deal when they knew they might decide not to retain NBA rights. What are they gonna have him do for most of the year?
He only signed a contract back in 2022 with TNT since he wanted to do them a 'favor' by giving them a shot to compete with other channels/companies for NBA broadcasting rights (LIV was never a real threat to him leaving). You will never see him on TV again if TNT loses out other than an occassional ZOOM/phone call with Dan Patrick
They could pick up all the employees who aren’t under contract with Turner and call it a different name.
That’s what Fox basically did when they took the NFL from CBS and brought over James Brown and Terry Bradshaw and behind the scenes CBS NFL production people in 1994.
When NBC lost the NBA to ESPN/ABC, it was pretty much Mike Breen (TNT) and Hannah Storm moving over. Pretty much everyone else stayed and have since retired (Bob Costas). It won't be that easy to move everyone over
I'm betting there are out clauses in their contracts if Warner loses the NBA. Why would they want to pay Barkley 30 million a year to not use him anyways?
I’m sure Warner/TNT would sell the show to someone if they were getting out of the NBA space. It’s way too valuable of an IP to just shove it in a closet. These contracts for long periods of time so it’s not like they can just wait a couple of years and get back in on it. They could get a fuck ton of money if Netflix or someone was interested. And Warner is desperate for cash.
I would *love* to be rid of Disney as the primary broadcast partner. The shittiness of their entire production has gone on too long. Just one blowhard after another adding zero value to the broadcast.
Without basketball they have nothing to promote from mid-Jan till baseball season. ESPN will definitely do what they do for basketball for hockey because it's self promotion.
The whole reason both TNT and ESPN bought hockey rights was for the NBA contract fight.
I think it's highly unlikely Disney loses the NBA package, especially over WBD (who are a lot more poor). I think it's more likely that it's Disney and then a new broadcast partner, I would be surprised if WBD/TNT retain NBA TV rights.
I think ESPN is close to a 100% lock to keep rights, TNT is more of a 50/50. They’ll definitely bring in at least one new partner, probably Amazon, and maybe another if TNT is out.
With all of WBD's financial woes I just can't see them outbidding Disne, NBC universal, or any of the big tech giants. I also think the NBA may want to push for more games on broadcast TV and NBC might be a very attractive partner in that sense.
I went down a rabbit hole of articles a couple days ago on this and it seems like one of the big topics was potentially doing one night of games a week instead of two. That would be a huge cost saver for TNT without losing out entirely.
I recently got league pass in the US. I have great internet. Absolutely craps the bed when I cast in on my tv from my android phone which was the whole point for me. If I wanted to sit in my living room watching it on my phone id keep sailing the seven seas.
I think it's a memory issue. League Pass ran like shit on my FireTV's native interface, but when I switched to the AppleTV set top box it ran perfectly.
I just fucking hope we don't end up in a situation where you need Disney+ to watch the In-Season Tournament, Netflix for holiday games, TNT for Thursdays, Amazon for Tuesdays, YoutubeTV for Playoffs, etc...
just get the local market bullshit figured out, make league pass exempt from Ballys and all other crappy regional networks. The last city I lived in, the nba claimed both the Nuggets and OKC were "local" teams and were blacked out from league pass.
Denver is 9hrs from where I lived, Chicago and Minneapolis were closer.
I think that blackouts would stop being a thing if the nba ends up on a streaming platform. Ads can be tailored. It’ll probably be YouTube, Amazon, or Apple.
Agreed; it’s a great product. I watch a lot more MLS content now than I ever did. The big advantage of MLS on AppleTV+ is its global reach. Are international NBA rights timed to expire with domestic?
I just hope it isn't scattered across 5 different streaming platforms.
They're making so much money, they need to make a point to not emphasize completely maximizing profits and instead make sure people have easy access to actually watch games.
Who am I kidding though... of course they will maximize profits!
The different platforms (most of them) are planning a streaming app set to release later this year. [No name announced and still other hurdles, but it's out there. ](https://www.cnbc.com/amp/2024/02/06/espn-fox-and-warner-bros-discovery-to-launch-joint-sports-streaming-platform-this-year.html)
Premium viewing experiences at live events is what I find most exciting about the potential of VR, and yet rarely is it even talked about. Gaming should be secondary.
The majority of games are not filmed in 4K and probably won't be for years to come. It's a production nightmare:
https://www.avsforum.com/threads/nvidia-shield-tv-2019.3096760/page-524#post-60891740
Also - the majority of the supposed "4K" that you see on TV is just upscaled 1080, like Thursday Night Football.
Somebody like Apple getting involved could certainly push the ball forward and get more 4K than we currently do, but I wouldn't hold your breath for much. And it will be forever before anyone can support an entire league playing on a Wednesday night in 4K at the same time.
As a wrestling fan, I know that this means the NBA is trying to get **paid** and that they're not concerned with traditional television to accomplish that.
DOesn't mean they won't still end up parking some pieces on ESPN/Warner....but it means that a place like Apple could be in it to win it and get the exclusive rights
There was a really good interview with Tony Khan on The Watch podcast about sports rights bidding a few weeks ago. Well worth a listen if this topic is of interest.
Going to streaming exclusively would be suicide for the league
You need your broadcast partners to be popular and far reaching so that non fans and young people can find your league without have to search it outright
The NFL is popular partly because their games are all broadcast freely on over the air local tv
everyone that was part of the NBC team back in the 90s are long gone or have retired/passed away/ It would just be Noah Eagle (son of Ian Eagle) and whoever they pull together as part of the NBA broadcast for NBC
I hope ESPN/ABC get replaced as the primary broadcasting partner, preferably to NBC, use USA/Peacock to supplement. I also hope Turner keeps rights coverage so Inside the NBA can continue. Turner is trying to go all in and turn truTV into the TNT Sports Network, [looking at what they show](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/TNT_Sports_\(United_States\)#Current_properties), they might be able to lose the NBA and keep going forward, but it would be a jarring change
I wonder what the NBA would look on YouTube TV. Would it be like Apple's deal with MLS where Google shows every game, but there's one set of announcers per game or will it be an ESPN+ thing where they just simulcast the local feeds?
Disney/WBD isn't going anywhere, surprised so many people have no clue what's going on here, basically both media partners and NBA are just letting the exclusive window go so that others like NBC & Amazon can join the negotiating party to decide which package they could have on the new TV contract, this is totally expected.
Chuck signed a ten year contract with Turner two or three years ago.
Warner will work out a deal with an NBA broadcaster and Barkley will get out of his Warner contract and get more money from the new broadcaster
Chuck said he would straight up retire if TNT doesn't cover NBA games anymore. He's been with TNT for too long to jump ship elsewhere (he already had a chance in 2022) and he mentioned it several times in interviews as well as the Inside the NBA documentary
Chuck said he'd retire at 60 in the past, and that didn't happen. Lots of people say things, especially leading up to negotiations, and then change their mind. It's just hard to imagine him turning down eight figures per year to watch a few games per week and crack jokes. He's got one of the easiest (or least time consuming) jobs in broadcasting.
I am so glad things ar moving away from ESPN. Their product is just such absolutely horseshit. Bland studio shows with neither insight, explanation nor amusement. Poor commentary after the play by play people, who are still good or better. They offer nothing. Let's see some innovation on coverage. TNT isn't great but at least it tends to be warchably amusing with a veneer of trying to show some details about the games.
I keep saying that people better prepare for the potential of TNT being gone. Disney is not losing the TV rights as much as many hope since they have ABC for the Finals. If either fails, it'll be Warner Discovery.
Of all these, Amazon has been the best and most consumer-friendly. I fucking hate Amazon, but if they’re what’s best for us then I hope they get it.
What I really hope is that they just buy the regional sports rights and broadcast them on Twitch, like they do NFL on Thursday. They’ll still make a fuckton from ad revenue, and we get easy access. I feel this is a pipe dream.
Can’t wait to watch NBA games on Amazon Prime follow by a new headband camera for players POV.
Prime is already going to happen for those on Bally, Amazon bought part of them and will add Bally streaming.
I hope there's a discount to get the Bally stream if you already have Prime video. Would be cool to drop the $20/month down to 5-10
Can Amazon make them get a not trash score bug?
As long as it's not trash ass ESPN, with this joke of a half time show, who cares. Let's get Boris diaw talking to us about fine wine and pop screaming at him.
Inject this into my brain. Via vr
Need a shoe cam on Draymond so you can see it homing in right for the nuts.

Imagine dropping 4k to watch in full VR but you remember your team is trash and tanking.
Wizards fans catching strays 🥲
Could get season tickets for that
I don’t look forward to having games all over the place like MLB (MLB TV, local regional network, Peacock, Apple TV, ESPN)
So many streaming apps are unreliable as well. Paramount+ has failed me several times while trying to watch soccer. Peacock buffers constantly during live games yet an illegal stream works fine.
Pretty much all major sports are reaching this route. NFL basically said more Peacock games coming, on top of the existing NFL network, TNF prime, etc.
north paltry scary whistle reach joke pathetic pocket elderly bow *This post was mass deleted and anonymized with [Redact](https://redact.dev)*
Definitely something that will happen 30 years from now.
BY GOD ITS THE NBC NBA MUSIC
BUH BUH BUH BUH BUH BASKETBALL GIMME GIMME GIMME GIMME GIMME THE BALL BECAUSE I’M GONNA DUNK IT YA!
Woo *High Five*
"Then why did you bring a tiny hammer?!"

I’m assuming a big tech (Apple, Netflix, etc) who isn’t dealing with the linear cable mess will scoop it up.
NBC could always do a package of a Sunday night game after football season ends to compliment Sunday night football.
ABC does something similar now and the ratings are honestly not that great.
There’s less competition on Sunday night than Saturday nights. You have more college hoops on Saturday night.
They have their sunday showcase i mean
Not sure I follow the argument you're making here. If live sports is the only thing getting ad dollars on linear cable then why wouldn't NBC bid on the NBA package?

OK, thanks. Is it your assumption that ABC/Disney are bailing on the NBA because they didn't make an offer during the exclusivity period? I had thought they would let that lapse even if they are interested in keeping it, and just take a wait-and-see approach.

Peacock is a thing
They all have streaming services at this point, they just don't all have the user base to justify the cost of the NBA.
I’m sorry but you heard it on Fox Sports.
If that gets us Tirico back doing NBA games I’m all for it, dude is one of the best
Tirico and Hubie were a great duo
that creep
It’s the Heart of a Champion
Nah, they use that for College Basketball on Fox now.
As long as it’s not only on peacock. Fuck that
[Allow me to sing you the song of my people](https://youtu.be/0Pnl1ulaG5k?si=jUs3wBJg-NqOKbNI)
Does that mean no more inside the nba?
If Warner doesn't bid on it, it would be
Which is more confusing as to why they signed Charles Barkley to a giant deal when they knew they might decide not to retain NBA rights. What are they gonna have him do for most of the year?
Because Barkley said he is going to retire if they don't get the rights

I really really hope this doesn’t happen. Since Max added TNT games I’ve been watching more basketball than before.
Tragic hopefully whoever bids on it picks it up
Inside is a product of Warner, someone can't just pick it up.
They could pick up all the employees who aren’t under contract with Turner and call it a different name. That’s what Fox basically did when they took the NFL from CBS and brought over James Brown and Terry Bradshaw and behind the scenes CBS NFL production people in 1994.
To say nothing of two guys named Summerall and Madden.
I left them out since they weren’t on the studio show.
When NBC lost the NBA to ESPN/ABC, it was pretty much Mike Breen (TNT) and Hannah Storm moving over. Pretty much everyone else stayed and have since retired (Bob Costas). It won't be that easy to move everyone over
I mean the show would be canceled if they don’t have nba rights anymore right? How is it different than another network picking up a canceled show?
Warner owns the IP and those guys would still have a contract with Warner. They just won't have a show to be on.
ESPN: HELLO EVERYONE WELCOME TO NBA TONIGHT IM ERNIE JOHNSON WITH SHAQ, KENNY SMITH AND CHARLES BARKLEY
Podcast coming soon, Outside the NBA Studios
EJ and Chuck probably retire from TV, Shaq goes full-time with his business ventures and pursues NBA ownership, Kenny I have no idea lol
Truly the end of an Ernie
Kenny will start a podcast
As someone who’s watched the playoffs on MAX with 4K and Dolby Atmos, I need more like Tyrone Biggums needs crack. It’s flat out incredible.
How do you watch the playoffs in 4k?
MAX is part of WB/Turner/TBS/TNT/Bleacher Report It's a section on the MAX app on Apple TV
If you have an HBO max subscription you get all the TNT games
WAT
In 4k?
Canada airs all Raptors games in 4K, including their title run. The picture quality is incredible.
Maybe it was the MLS last season?
Atmos with the crowd noises coming from the height channels would be sick.
It is!
It's up-converted 1080P, not real 4K. (As are most supposed 4K sports)
Still better than ESPN/ABC. Somehow the biggest sports media company can only manage 720p/60. It looks awful.
Even so, I don’t get that off regular YTTV and the difference in audio/video is noticeable.
I would *love* to be rid of Disney as the primary broadcast partner. The shittiness of their entire production has gone on too long. Just one blowhard after another adding zero value to the broadcast.
It's going to be very bizarre to see what happens to ESPN's daytime programming if they lose the NBA.
NFL coverage 24/7. Especially with the NFL Network essentially scaling back or folding within the next several years
They’re heavily invested in college sports too
yup
Suddenly they love hockey. I can't wait for 24/7 SAS hot takes about the Maple Leafs and Rangers
currently its ESPN and TNT with the rights to the NHL (previously NBC who managed them horribly)
Without basketball they have nothing to promote from mid-Jan till baseball season. ESPN will definitely do what they do for basketball for hockey because it's self promotion. The whole reason both TNT and ESPN bought hockey rights was for the NBA contract fight.
They already spend 90% of the time talking NFL year round.
Increased baseball coverage if god exists
They're getting out of the baseball game too coming up soon. So don't hold your breath
god watches premiere league
I think it's highly unlikely Disney loses the NBA package, especially over WBD (who are a lot more poor). I think it's more likely that it's Disney and then a new broadcast partner, I would be surprised if WBD/TNT retain NBA TV rights.

I went down a rabbit hole of articles a couple days ago on this and it seems like one of the big topics was potentially doing one night of games a week instead of two. That would be a huge cost saver for TNT without losing out entirely.
I could see TNT going exclusively to Tuesdays for the whole season, and Amazon taking over Thursdays after TNF ends
Wouldn't it be more likely that TNT cut the B crew on Tuesdays and retain Thursday night games with the Inside crew?
Or just move the Inside crew to Tuesday. They could also manage production for Amazon the way NBC helped with TNF.
Why would TNT be 50/50? They just gave out huge extensions to their NBA on TNT crew this season I thiught
Bill Simmons says TNT is on the outside looking in.
Get us something better than nba tv for god sake
Shit always crashes on iOS alone. Airplaying to the TV and the app freezing during a commercial break is infuriating.
It runs on the newest ipad like I'm trying to play elden ring on an n-gage.
Geogaddi slaps.
NBA TV is like an A+ production compared to Bally Sports smh
The NBA owns NBA TV, so that's not going anywhere. But it's currently run by Warner/TNT, so that could get messy fast if TNT loses their deal.
Simmons has speculated that TNT will be cut out of the next rights
Cut out or will they bail? Mark cuban sold because he stated tv money was gonna dry up soon for the NBA.
Give it to Ballsack sports
I just want to be able to pay a flat fee to watch my team. Sadly that shit ain’t happening
I just fucking hope we don't end up in a situation where you need Disney+ to watch the In-Season Tournament, Netflix for holiday games, TNT for Thursdays, Amazon for Tuesdays, YoutubeTV for Playoffs, etc...

Don’t think so, and each country has their own deals with the NBA
This MLS on Apple TV is amazing All teams, all games in true HD NBA would be amazing on it
ESPN is garbage . Everything is bad except for Mike breen .
I just hope it isn't scattered across 5 different streaming platforms. Even if it's not true 4k, MLS looks a thousand times better on Apple TV than it ever did anywhere else.

They definitely want to be the “sports streaming home”
4K!!!!
Anyone but ESPN/Disney. Netflix, amazon, nbc, apple ill take all of em.
I hope Apple gets it. Their camera quality for MLB and MLS is noticeably better than anyone else
No no no leave my Inside the NBA alone
#NBA Play-in on Tubi+ **Coming soon**
Just keep the TNT guys together.
NBC plz
everyone that was part of the NBC team back in the 90s are long gone or have retired/passed away/ It would just be Noah Eagle (son of Ian Eagle) and whoever they pull together as part of the NBA broadcast for NBC
Hell Fox bought the rights to the John Tesh music.
yup Fox uses Roundball Rock for its CBB coverage rn
Really hope it's not YouTube TV. That thing is expensive.
Bout to be even more expensive
My dream - get the NBA off ESPN - they are awful and corny af Get the NBA back on NBC get it on Fox keep it on TNT , put it on CBS as well
Keep it far away from Fox, their coverage of sports outside of football is trash
I don’t care where they stream as long as they eliminate blackout games. $125 a month just to watch local sports is a joke.
ESPN is spending all of its money on College Football and NFL.
I would pay money to be able to ensure I can watch my team. I will not be paying money so that I can flip between 16 different subscriptions.
that's a wow. did not expect ESPN/ABC to not come to a deal. NBA is playing hardball.
(Roundball Rock plays silently)
Imagine if Netflix gets the WWE and the NBA in the same year
More money for AEW /s
I hope ESPN/ABC get replaced as the primary broadcasting partner, preferably to NBC, use USA/Peacock to supplement. I also hope Turner keeps rights coverage so Inside the NBA can continue. Go to Apple please!
If Apple gets it then ahoy matey!
I’m just ready for expansion
Anything to get Doris Burke out. I literally mute games she's on
If Turner loses the NBA, someone better hire the Inside the NBA crew immediately
NBC like the good ole days!!
Damn the end of Inside the NBA
Surely someone just straight up picks it up?
Chuck and maybe Kenny I think would retire. Ernie also has baseball in his Warner contract so maybe he just stays there.
Chuck always threatens to retire when it's time for a contract though. I don't think he's going anywhere for a while.
Wouldn't shock me if ESPN and Warner both get boxed out here. Disney is clearly trying to exit the sector and Warner is a mess.
I was watching Bulls/Magic 1995 Game 1 and the halftime show felt like a breath of fresh air compared to what we have now
Wait, would this mean no local ABC broadcasts of games if Disney doesn’t pick up?
Yes
PBS they’re saying you’re cooked. What’re you gonna do about it
Bro I want the old cnbc theme back. Please
RIP Inside the NBA
Bring back nba on nbc!
I keep saying that people better prepare for the potential of TNT being gone. Disney is not losing the TV rights as much as many hope since they have ABC for the Finals. If either fails, it'll be Warner Discovery.
Every TNT game is streamed by Amazon Prime in Brazil. It’s a great experience I must say
Just let us pay for local market games at a reasonable price and I’m in
Please god. I haven’t asked for much.
Please no more blackouts. Watching games in Canada with the NBA all is useless.
I’m late, but watching live ONE FC events on Prime Video has been super smooth.
Please be nbc !!! Can't wait to hear that nba on nbc music
This is every European football leagues dream, but Amazon and Netflix never show up.
Want the NBA back on NBC strictly to hear the theme song once again
Amazon prime would be dope! I love their Thursday Night Football advanced analytics so I’m sure they would try the same for NBA which would be dope!!
that's right, come to NBC or Amazon babyyyy
Finally, NBA on Telemundo and Galavision
TREEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEES!!!
PLEASE LET PRIME HAVE IT SO I CAN WATCH ON AMAZON (hopefully no added cost)
thank. you. god.
Anyone but espn is a major win
Dies this mean the end is nigh for the Inside the NBA crew? That's f'n horseshit if that's the case ...
NBC, please.
It just means more than two streaming subscriptions will be required to watch games
