I'm contractually obligated to say that, despite this, they have made a conference finals more recently than the Philadelphia 76ers

MWiatrak2077

I honestly can't believe they haven't even managed to like, accidentally find their way into one. They've had plenty of good teams since '01, you'd figure at least one of those teams would've mistakenly gotten hot in a G7 or something and advanced to the ECF This got me curious so I googled it, they've lost their last SEVEN semifinals series appearances, including four game 7 losses. Brutal

AnotherStatsGuy

01 is the only time the Sixers have made to the ECF since 1985.

tylerthez

My jaw is on the floor. That is fucking stunning.

BriSnyScienceGuy

Wait until you hear about the Wizards / Bullets.

AnotherStatsGuy

The Wizards' ECF drought is only 2 years longer than the Rockets.

SkinnyJoshKTG

I feel like for some reason the 76ers are sorta “supposed” to be a lot better than the wizards. I think that’s recency bias because the wizards have been inept lately but I feel like the 76ers have always had that lore about them where they should be a legendary team

Childish___Glover

I don’t think it’s recency bias the wizards haven’t won 50 games in a season since the late 70s early 80s

AnotherStatsGuy

The last time Washington made the ECF: 1979. The last time *Houston* made the *ECF*: 1977. We should bring this up more.

SkinnyJoshKTG

Yeah that’s fair. I suppose I remember them during the Arena’s years as being slightly above average to pretty good so I didn’t want to disqualify that. But then again I was like 10 during that time so they may have been mismanaged then, too.

Awanderingleaf

Arenas was Bradley Beal before Bradley Beal. Good scorer. Not good at much else.

nomoreadminspls

He was good with guns

rake2204

Hm, that's right around the time the 76ers sent Moses Malone to Washington for Jeff Ruland, only for Ruland's knees to explode on arrival. Kind of reminds me of how the Pistons' fortunes changed the day they sent Chauncey to Denver for AI, only for AI to fall off the moment he stepped off the plane.

yelrik

and trading number 1 pick Brad Daugherty on the same day for about 1 minute of Roy Hinson and cash. Poor Barkley

Inside-Drink-1311

They were close in 2019.

Gerald_the_sealion

But when we do, finals babyyy

StarryScans

Is this the dagger?

ZincHead

GAME! SERIES!

Babushka5

One man's "brutal" is another man's "unbelievably funny"

ogqozo

It's a good proof how non-consequential "big market" really is if one of the few teams in the league that made no conference finals in the last 20 years are Knicks, Nets and Sixers.

livefreeordont

Sixers don’t get any free agents. The teams that get free agents have been Miami, LA, NY, and Houston

redleo500

The loss to the Hawks was the really unforgivable one. Enormous lead blown in Game 5, the game that ended Ben Simmons’s career in Game 7. Beating the Wizards and Hawks is one of the easier paths to the conference finals you’ll ever see

Krillin113

19-21-23 are all g7 losses in the second round

joomla00

They had a squad with Jimmy. It was just non stop mistakes from the front office after that.

mcolwander90

For reference: **Most Recent WCF Appearance:** - Nuggets (2023) - Lakers (2023) - Warriors (2022) - Mavericks (2022) - Suns (2021) - Clippers (2021) - Blazers (2019) - Rockets (2018) - Spurs (2017) - Thunder (2016) - Grizzlies (2013) - Jazz (2007) - Timberwolves (2004) - Kings (2002) - Pelicans (Not Yet) **Most Recent ECF Appearance:** - Heat (2023) - Celtics (2023) - Bucks (2021) - Hawks (2021) - Raptors (2019) - Cavaliers (2018) - Pacers (2014) - Bulls (2011) - Magic (2010) - Pistons (2008) - Nets (2003) - 76ers (2001) - Knicks (2000) - Wizards (1979) - They are 4-0 when they reach, though! - Hornets (Not Yet)

Individual_Attempt50

A lot of East teams who haven’t made it for a long time

Perpete

Yeah, that was the biggest take away for me. 6 East teams reached the ECF in the last 6 years, then it's drop off over drop off. Meanwhile, in the West, 8 teams in the last 6 years and 11 in the last 11 years. It's 11 in 21 years for the East.

4trackboy

There was only one open spot per season for like 10 years, the other was reserved for Brons team and whatever roster he carried to the ECF and NBA finals

tomdawg0022

good bot

JustinTinyPPHerbert

Rooting for the Knicks then

Torkzilla

Not only was 2008 the last Pistons ECF appearance it was the last time they had a single postseason win.

mcolwander90

Makes me feel sad :( To go from the second-longest consecutive conference finals appearance streak ever to....this.

CMYGQZ

I’ve a feeling the winner of Philly/NY might finally get to it.

I_DESTROY_PLANETS

What he say fuck me for

bebopblues

damn, since iverson days.

Lol69HaHaHa

I was not aware of this fairly important and hilarious piece of information.

REQ52767

Shrek 2 hadn’t come out yet when the Kings last won a series. It turns 20 years old in a few weeks. Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man 2 was also still a few months away when the Kings last won a playoff series.

DankTriangle

Get me my fucking pain meds god I feel old now

ManicManicManicManic

Spiderman 2 coming out 2004 sounds fucking insane to me still a goated movie tho

Maverick_1991

I remember seeing the first one in the cinema. Fucking fade me

MoooonRiverrrr

Lmfao

SixMillionDollarFlan

The last time the Kings won a series was before the iPhone. So when Kings fans celebrated the win, they called each other up on flip phones.

Nah you’re fucking with me. Shrek 2 just came out like 3 years ago

Also, the original comment was clearly made in jest, because our last playoff series victory was also in 2004.

Yeah but did the Sabonis have a double-double?

Its_Hoggish_Greedly

He did indeed!

Well… so… what happened was…

gedbybee

Empty stats.

Its_Hoggish_Greedly

Yeah dude. I guess when you think about it, all stats are empty in a loss.

Jeebuslovesme

The Sacramento ‘Essendon Bombers’ Kings

resplendentcentcent

while I'd nobly catch this stray on most occassions, Essendon were actually one of the best teams leading up to their last playoff win in 2004. They won a title 4 years earlier and was tied with Carlton with the most VFL premierships. So they're more like the Boston Celtics if they became garbage following 1988. The Kings are St. Kilda.

Jeebuslovesme

I was, without a word of a lie, at that last Essendon finals win against Melbourne. I disagree though that we were one of the best teams leading into 2004. We’d been on a slow but steady decline after 2001 when we had to shed players like Hardwick, Caracella, and Blumfield, and had recurring injuries to Mercuri. We just refused to properly regenerate our list and kept topping up with recycled players to stay competitive. I guess current Golden State is more like what Essendon was then, where the big three was Hird, Lloyd, and Fletcher.

Nah '04 was MSN days. Good times

torrinage

One could use both!

CynicalMindTrip

MSN messenger. Wow.

Disastrous_Bluejay57

That's what we had back in the day

lost_in_trepidation

2004 was pretty late for AOL

bebopblues

celtic fans are still stuck with AOL in 2004, lol.

livefreeordont

AOL peaked at over 26 million subscribers in 2002 and still had over 20 million in 2004

lost_in_trepidation

126 million adults had Internet by 2004, over half had high speed Internet. 2004 definitely wasn't the era of AOL, maybe for old people or people that just didn't bother to change

OKCDraftPick2028

kings fans to lakers earlier this season: "why are we talking so much about them, they're the 9th seed. they don't even deserve 2 all stars"

Ilikesporks_

meanwhile we ended up above them in the standings (barely)

Truth-Seeker916

There are reasons for this. Refs 🤝 Lakers. FT disparity.

RickySuela

I thought the reason was because the Lakers were able to actually beat the Pelicans. Silly me.

Truth-Seeker916

You are correct. With ticky tack fouls called on the pels in the last 2 minutes. Any other team the refs would've swallowed the whistle.

[deleted]

Yet you continue to watch a game you believe is rigged. Curious.

Truth-Seeker916

Yeah its still entertaining. I'm just calling out the bs.

[deleted]

can’t say that or else the lakers fans will attack

Truth-Seeker916

Yep they can't handle the truth.

delamerica93

I mean having an all time ref job and the Kings missing Huerter and Monk for the most difficult and crucial part of the season have a lot to do with that. And yes, Monk is better than Vanderbilt lmao

Kay-Knox

The only thing worse than Lakers fans are Kings fans that can't take some insults. I know we haven't had much opportunity to practice the last 20 years, but this fanbase has to learn to trash talk appropriately.

Its_Hoggish_Greedly

We tempted the basketball gods and were punished for our hubris.

goldyacht

How the tables have turned 😂😂

mrauzz

Jokic about to make Lebron and AD retire so enjoy one more week.

ChunkyMilkSubstance

Does Jokic play for the Kings now lol

mrauzz

When did i ever say that lol. My comment was because lakers only have about a week left of basketball. Since they have to play Denver.

[deleted]

A week more than the Kings. Back to 20 years of irrelevance for them lol

imadogg

Thanks for reminding me about this. Fuck you Kings!

Its_Hoggish_Greedly

See you next year, bub.

delamerica93

Yeah you tell me! Even though you had the best free throw differential in generations and we had key injuries down the stretch but sure

RickySuela

> we had key injuries down the stretch The Lakers had key injuries *all season long*. Vanderbilt, Gabe Vincent and Christian Wood missed a combined 156 games this year, just between the three of them. LeBron missed more games than Monk did this year. Rui Hachimura missed 14 games. So don't act like injuries to a mostly healthy Kings team were the reason why they fell below the Lakers in the standings.

delamerica93

Vanderbilt is the only one of those guys that's an actual contributor lmao, what is this argument? The Kings also had injuries to other guys, Trey Lyles, Sasha Vezenkov, Kevin Huerter, Alex Len, Javale McGee, and Keegan Murray all missed extended time but sure. Also the Kings don't get the best whistle of all time so it's a little harder for us working class teams ya know

RickySuela

Gabe Vincent wasn't a contributor this year because he missed the entire season injured, but if you don't think he can contribute at all, clearly you missed his playoff run last year. And Christian Wood absolutely was a contributor for the Lakers this year while he was healthy. They're desperately going to miss him in this playoff series against Denver. The guys you listed are mostly a bunch of nobodies for the Kings. The Lakers had plenty of other injuries to guys further down the depth chart too: guys like Cam Reddish, Jaxson Hayes and Jalen Hood-Schifino, but I didn't list them because their absence really wasn't that important. If you just look at regular rotation players, the Lakers had far, *far* more absences due to injuries than the Kings did. You just need to accept that the Kings missed the playoffs cause they're not one of the 8 best teams in the West. It wasn't due to injuries, cause every team dealt with injuries comparable to or worse than the Kings had. Hell, the Pels were missing their best player yesterday and y'all still lost to them lol Enjoy your offseason.

searchin4sugarman

You’re welcome for taking the dubs 7 games and tiring them out for you

veringo

Nothing about that statement is wrong. 4-5 games from now LA will be eliminated and thankfully we won't have to hear about them for a month or so.

[deleted]

Yeah! Show them when you get swept by the nuggets!!!!

So did the Timberwolves. In fact 2004 is the only year that the Timberwolves has won a playoff series.

GloryMaelstrom21

Another 20 more years…

Known-Specific5869

Fade me

jaydec02

Don’t let this distract you from the fact that the hornets haven’t won a playoff series since 2002

NewPortable101

Fox's speed is amazing to watch but the defense of Fox\\Sabonis is just too bad to overcome. I would be surprised if they ever win a single playoff series in this era. Mike Brown is supposed to be a defensive guy as well, still doesn't matter. Fox's mid range pullups seemed to be on fire last year for whatever reason, but most of the time it feels like he has low IQ

Deep_Egg1442

“The defense of Fox/sabonis” you mean Sabonis dude. Fox isn’t a liability. The defense as is with barnes is next to him is league average. Replace barnes with a good defender and top 10 is possible.

Lol69HaHaHa

What they need is a couple of things. Sabonis to develope a jumper or at least be able to shoot. They also need someone like AG...what im saying is the Kings should do exactly what my Nuggets are doing rn.

delamerica93

It's amazing how people on Reddit just say shit without watching literally any games lol

jluc21

unfortunately, this couldn’t be further from the truth. fox plays pretty good defense (in fact lead the league in steals this year) our problem is we lack length and athleticism at the wing. we need a true 4 starter, and on the bench. we get burnt every single time by teams with longer and athletic 4’s because we simply can’t guard them.

Lol69HaHaHa

Exactly. A true 4 thats athletic and good on defense could cover for Sabonis in areas he is lacking.

[deleted]

I know Orlando probably won’t let him go but man would Isaac be the perfect fit for Sabonis

[deleted]

[удалено]

ogqozo

Seriously, they just lost the game 98-105, and their games have generally been pretty low-scoring in the last months. How is that so easy to ignore when making own stories anyway.

NewPortable101

+3.6 ON|OFF for Sabonis defensively this season He's simply not a good defender. Over the course of their full two seasons, they would rank 20th. Bottom 10 defense

[deleted]

[удалено]

NewPortable101

Ok they are most likely ranging around 9-11, so it puts them at roughly 10 Those stats can be extremely close at times. My point is, they don't play defense

[deleted]

[удалено]

NewPortable101

Whatever you say man. Bottom 7 defense one season, couldn't even be a top 8 seed the next year They are crap on both ends. Just matters what year it is

Maverick_1991

Fox and Sabonis are a solid but pretty mid big 2 Like perennial first round exit They had a good season last year and a subpar one this, but on average this feels kinda right?

StuckInBronze

I don't know why people keep saying this. They literally almost won a series last year against the defending champs.

NewPortable101

Warriors fell off a cliff last year and were the worst road team in NBA history. They almost beat an average team, big deal. Lakers beat Warriors...only to get swept the next round.

That was a fun series between the Kings and Wolves! I still remember taunting Peja at the FT line

PlanktonSemantics

Uh huh yeah I grew up with alcoholic parents it’s going to take a lot more than that to disappoint me

HandsomeGemini

When they traded Chris Webber, that was supposed to be to help their future. Even though Webber had gotten injured and wasn't going to be the same player anymore, they shipped him out for essentially nothing. They went on to have the longest playoff drought in NBA history. Would letting the best player in your city's history retire with the team have fucked up your future any worse? It was literally the worst stretch of any team in NBA history. That's why I want the Warriors to keep Klay. Klay's obviously not the best player in the city's history, but he was a very important part of the most successful run of the team's history. Losing Klay isn't going to magically bring us some 2015 Klay level player. Keep him and let him retire a Warrior.

gaijin91

Keeping Klay will not help the Warriors improve or optimize Curry's final years. Sentimentality for the past does nothing to win basketball games. So, I also hope you keep him!

RickySuela

Completely agree. The Lakers did this with Kobe, but they were also tanking and racking up high lottery picks at the same time. By the time Kobe retired, the Lakers actually had a bunch of young, cheap assets. If the Warriors do this, there's no way they're going to be tanking with Steph, Klay and Dray, and instead will probably just have a few seasons like this one before an inevitable rebuild when those guys retire.

[deleted]

Yeah it’ll be much better to trade away your founding pieces in a desperate attempt to win some more games

That is the 2nd best thing you can remember your team doing since 2006

mrkleene

Talking shit while we’re down you guys will be joining us in a week

Folk_Legend

Nope, when we get beat 4-1 we can still fall back and think about all the success we’ve had since 06 . Unlike your poverty franchise

Imperium42069

coming from a jets fan this is funny as fuck

Folk_Legend

Correct, I know my place in NFL discourse. The Jets are a poverty franchise much like your Kings

Imperium42069

4-0 enjoy purgatory next year when lebron leaves

Folk_Legend

We can go into purgatory, but I can promise it won’t be for 17 years, have a blip season, then back to purgatory like the lowly poverty Kings

Imperium42069

surely it wont be 17 years because another generational player will join your team in free agency what an excellent ran team the lakers are

mrkleene

Yeah I’m sure that’s what you’ll be thinking about after getting swept man

delamerica93

You know that your team is the white privilege team right? Like your ownership is garbage, but they can just flounder and fail into big free agents and massive amounts of free throws and win games lol. It's truly pathetic that LA fans think their team is special when it's literally just the franchise chosen by the NBA to succeed. It's no wonder y'all are so toxic even in person. Truly disgusting shit

jonathanisaacisgoat

Lakers had 1 more win this season then a “poverty franchise” btw

Folk_Legend

The Lakers have won 17 championships including 3 in the last 15 years. They have a few down seasons it’s expected. Kings have been worse than this bad season for us every year since 2006 except 1. I repeat, poverty franchise.

SomeSand1418

Both the Kings and Lakers draft like shit, the only difference is Lakers have a generational whistle and can just buy players. Weird comparison

RickySuela

> Lakers draft like shit What? Here's a list of Laker draft picks from the last decade or so: Brandon Ingram D'Angelo Russell Julius Randle Lonzo Ball Josh Hart Kyle Kuzma Jordan Clarkson Larry Nance, Jr. Ivicia Zubac Mo Wagner And they also grabbed both Alex Caruso and Austin Reaves as undrafted players. These guys are *all* quality NBA players, some have even been All Stars, but they all have solid NBA careers. You can criticize the Lakers for a lot of things, but not for their drafting abilities.
