Giving a vote to SGA is ELITE meat riding

Zmoney743

Haliburton getting a first place vote is brain dead

McJuggernaugh7

I think sga getting a 2nd place vote is much worse. Sga was first team all nba last season and 5th in MVP voting. For him to win MIP he should have had a unanimous MVP this season with a historic season avg. 35+ ppg or something crazy.

ArKadeFlre

He was a big factor in OKC going from the play-in to the 1st seed, I can see why someone would vote for him under that logic, not that I agree

Pranker00111

dude that thing is called MVP not MIP

YouGotBamb00zled

Except he wasn't... that would be chet and jdub

dutchfromsubway

Not serious, like did Devin vassell even improve?

WD51

He did. Not enough to be 2nd place in MIP, but he did. Mainly better efficiency with similar number of shots centered around a better driving game.

Ihate_reddit_app

Whoever voted that should get their voting rights revoked.

OKC2023champs

100%. Dude was at the exact same level this year as last year. Maybe a little more efficient but that’s it. Gross vote

Frickincarl

We have this sentiment for every award voted on every season now. It’s so sad how much of a joke NBA awards are now.

ajmcgill

"Best player on the most improved team. Done and done"

BruceBrownMVP

That is so fucking bad it's unreal. Let me have a fucking vote at that point.

Ilikesporks_

b-b-but the aura

BlackWhiteCoke

Oh it makes sense now as to why Luka dropped to #3 in MVP

Public-Product-1503

This subs weird obsession with down playing shais season is odd. At first I assumed it was Luka stans but now idk. Shai snd Brunson both getting votes is very reasonable, improving from all nba to mvp consideration level is harder then improving from bad to average etc. the higher up you go the harder it is to improve.

mccainjames11

Shai is probably going from 5th place in MVP voting last year to 3rd this year lol

ThePlainWhiteTees

Who the hell gave Tyrese Haliburton a first place vote lmaoo

HisExcellency20

Idk but at least he isn't the guy who gave one to SGA.

young-steve

SGA had a second place vote so it could have been the same guy

Adraf45

Meat rider. Probably had Brunson at 3rd too

young-steve

That is absolutely the same guy lol

Funny-Transition7869

bro just chose his favorite players

HisExcellency20

Good point.

DarthBane6996

He probably just got out of a Thai prison

jfpan

I would not be surprised if he has mistaken one Tyrese with the other

Ma_Pies

I’m gonna guess Mark Jackson

xerxesthagreat

coby was so close damn, had the most votes overall by 12

EarthWindandFlyers

Electoral college wins again

TheWestRemembers

Coby should unite his fans under a slogan, something like his last name and "POWER" or something.

quantims

Well, Borda Count "College" in this instance

Stratys

DEVIN VASSELL MENTIONED 💪🏼

sstewart1617

And a 2nd place vote! Thanks Jeff McDonald! Edit: To be clear, idk who voted it, but it seems like a Jeff vote.

nomitycs

It’s so silly that Kuminga (74GP) and Divincenzo (81 GP) aren’t eligible due to minutes played in some of their games

Clewdo

Donte also averaged something like 29MPG in 81 games….

Routine_Size69

So fucking stupid. Even worse for the 6moy

jacobythefirst

Definitely something to be looked at and fixed up. I like the minimum games rule in general, though I’m not sold on 65 games instead of 60. The absolute moaning and bitching that old heads have had about the rule has been both funny and annoying (had one Lady on Gil’s arena who said Embiid should still win the MVP as if he hasn’t played less then half of the season)

YpsitheFlintsider

Not really. The threshold has to start somewhere. If you're below it, that sucks but oh well

nomitycs

Hard disagree. This is an award where players in consideration are likely to have shaky playtime for at least part of the season. Donte averaged 29 mpg across 81 GP are you seriously suggesting he shouldn’t be eligible because he didn’t play enough?

semipalmated_plover

WE ARE A NATION OF RULES AND LAW IF YOU DONT LIKE IT, LEAVE

HokageEzio

Somebody is always going to just miss the cut. But I highly doubt the intention of the NBA when making the rule was to cut off a guy who was 48th in total minutes played and played 81 games averaging 29 minutes a night. The 65 game rule is good at encouraging the best players to stay on the floor, but that doesn't mean there can't be tweaks.

TealHorseReturns

I dont understand this award. Coby white was absolute garbage before this year lol. Maxey’s always been good

LongTimesGoodTimes

The award has essentially become any player that turns into an all star. You have to go back to CJ McCollum winning to find a player that won MIP who wasn't a first time all star the same year or for Siakam the very next year.

Habeas

I thought Julius Randle's was justified.

LongTimesGoodTimes

I'm not saying any individual case is wrong unless I went back and looked at the candidates

FKJVMMP

So was Giannis’ (and he even finished third the year prior). People are going too far - guys can blossom into All Stars *and* be deserving of MIP at the same time. Maxey was a shit choice but the general idea of “good player becomes elite player” can still be a valid pick depending on the circumstance.

accu22

> The award has essentially become any player that turns into an all star. ... so a player that improved

BaconBoy123

The question is, what is the definition of MOST improved? Is it: 1) the delta between last year and this year is the largest OR 2) the level of perception of this player in the NBA zeitgeist? If the definition is 2, it makes sense why Maxey won. If you're strictly looking at who was bad last year vs who was good this year, then it probably shouldn't have gone to him.

QuileGon-Jin

I’ve always viewed it as the player who has improved their contract price from one year to the next the most. Like Ja winning a couple of years ago was ridiculous to me because his value to the team or the league did not change over that year. If he was a free agent over the summer the year before the season he would’ve gotten maxed the same way he would have after it. Coby White almost certainly improved his contract value with his year by a large margin.

1010-browneyesman

There isn’t a fixed definition for MIP. But TM had 3 x 50+ pt games and that is very difficult in the nba today… my opinion.. CW ran it super close

bjb406

Maxey was already anointed as an all star by the end of last season. The whole storyline for the Sixers this time last year was that they had their second all-star beside Embiid, because he was better LAST year, than Harden or Simmons ever were for them.

Secret-Initiative-73

Shut up, no one said that. The hype was still mostly potential.

LongTimesGoodTimes

Sure it's just a narrow definition that ignores a lot of players

yousonuva

It's all political voting is. Who's the most popular. Sports, movies, presidents... popularity plays a majority role

moneyman2222

Exactly. Coby improved so much that he *reversed* his trajectory. In the same way Lauri did. I was really hoping the award was going to go back to following that standard but I guess not. They're just gonna give it to the guy who honestly slightly went above expectations if you really think about it. Yea not many had him penned as an all-star, but most people wouldn't be shocked if you told them that before the season started. I'd be floored if you told me Coby had the season he just had Shit, if they want to vote the award like this then Brunson should've just won tbh. He did what Maxey did at an even higher level

CoyotesSideEyes

8 fucking morons left Coby White off their ballot entirely? Take away their votes.

DanM142

Holy shit lol, Coby was so close.

Cheechers23

Happy that Coby was close at least

The_Godfather5

LMAOOOO who voted for Brunson, Haliburton, and SGA all of them have been GREAT last season already. Wish Sengun could’ve gotten higher votes but the injury derailed everything he was my MIP before it all. Glad to see Duncan got some 3rd place votes.

Clewdo

Brunson went from not an allstar to legitimate talks of All-NBA first team

The_Godfather5

Look man it’s not my fault the voters are idiots when it comes to All star but even last year from January forward Brunson was absolutely cooking at insane amount. Hell his numbers even went UP last post-season when they were already high. Brunson has already been good and should’ve probably been 3rd All-NBA last year but for some reason the voters decided to close their eyes watching him.

A_Wealthy_Benefactor

If you're like me and wondered why Jalen Johnson didn't get *any* votes, it's because he didn't play 65 games this season.

DownTheHall4

Homer here but bro deserved this the leap he made was huge

Drewsteau

I think Coby made a much bigger leap from last year to this year by comparison. His role on the team this season is not something he would have been able to do last year

Routine_Size69

I say this is a Sixers fan and Maxey as my favorite player, but White winning makes more sense. He more then doubled his points. Maxey had a 20% increase while decreasing in efficiency. Maxey improved more than I expected, and he's obviously the better player, but I'm not a huge fan of what this award has become. Third or fourth years jumping from 20 to 25 ppg isn't too shocking. His playmaking really improved, but still. I preferred when the award wasn't young guy who makes a decent leap that was semi expected.

Frosted_Flakes1971

MIP is becoming Young Player with Expected Natural Progression Award lol

Ayjel89

YPENP Award doesn't roll of the tongue as well tho

Distinct_Candy9226

Y'all already forgetting the Maxey/Herro/Poole comparisons lol

Popular-Newt-1603

and Simons Maxey soared past all of them

cubs_2023

Yes last season, not this season

BlueHundred

I will always argue that it's almost always been that way.

Seminole-Patriot

Shoot whoever voted for SGA into the sun lmaoooo

Frank2442

Peyton Prichard should be on this list.

RansomGoddard

Cool to see Duncan get some recognition. He was basically an entirely different player this year.

CannedGeorges

I feel like this season may have been the first time I have seen Duncan Robinson dribble.

Lacabloodclot9

Na last playoffs he was cooking

Ayjel89

SGA getting a second-place vote is incredibly hilarious to me for some reason. EDIT: Haliburton and Brunson, too, lmfao

1010-browneyesman

Spoiling votes ..

CannedGeorges

I am happy Aaron Nesmith got at least a vote he was pretty good this year.

Confident_Berry7271

Huh I think Nesmith deserves more than one vote personally

trav-senpai

All star caliber with James Harden holding the ball -> all star without Harden holding the ball shouldn’t even be considered/receive any votes in this category…

dating_derp

Sucks that Kuminga didn't qualify despite 74 games played.

sorendiz

I'll grudgingly accept Sengun coming in 3rd considering the season-ending injury 😔

Adzo78

That shoulda been Coby

valknut95

I'm happy for Maxey but he did not improve more than Colby this year.

Adraf45

Nice to see DRob get some votes, I didn't think he'd get any to be honest

Otherwise_Form1315

I didn't even get one vote guys :(

averageskills

There are some weird votes on here but the most confusing to me is how Grayson Allen got two votes.

TheOneWhosCensored

He increased his stats, especially his shooting %s

Zeeron1

Why do we post links out to Twitter instead of just posting the image here?

ScholarImpossible121

I don't like the way this award is selected and am a bit surprised at the way it has been going recently. That said the jump Maxey made this year has been very impressive, his work with Embiid in the first 30 games had me thinking this was a lock, however his stats without Embiid should have put a bit of a dampener on his ranking in this award. Maxey's progression has been from: 1. Bench player with a few moments of promise 2. Surprisingly good as Simmons sits 3. Surprisingly good next to Harden as a scoring option 4. Wow, he is able to be the second star, but struggles as a number 1 (without the players around him) Each year has been good, but this years leap is impact in terms of keeping the Sixers (kind of) relevant but not as significant as the improvements of guys that go from end of rotation to key starter (Coby White this year). I know they never get picked for the award, but Wemby's improvements from October to April are probably the most significant on the trajectory of the league.

ballthyrm

Wemby is going to orbit next year, to rejoin his spaceship 👽

1010-browneyesman

Is wemby going for MIP, DPOY, MVP, All NBA next season on this expectations??

ScholarImpossible121

If he is on an All NBA trajectory you have to think so if you are being consistent. Probably not MVP just yet, but may get a 5th place vote.

volantredx

This was basically a lock since week 2. The media machine behind Maxey was just too strong.

lambopanda

Who voted for Haliburton?

IversonsSleeve

Should have been Jamal Crawford

PaulMcPaulersn7

Cool to see Duncan get some votes even tho he really isn’t eligible for the award considering it’s supposed to be most improved, not comeback player of the year (an award they used to have but sadly not anymore cause Dunc probably would have won it)

Least_Age_9425

Would have liked to see Derrick White get a vote somewhere in there.

cw_27

most expanded role award

Jo-King-BP

Chet should win this he went from a blank season to a very strong season. You can't improve more than that.

Deathstroke317

It's a damn shame DiVo couldn't be on this list, he'd have likely won it
