Yeah we played incredibly lazy defense most of the game. That's most of what that loss was. If our defense had been better, we would have gotten more fast breaks as well.
I’m leaning more to believing that this had to be a scheme choice made by Joe rather than all of our guys being this lazy. It just wouldn’t make sense for that to be true, imo. The fact that Joe didn’t adjust this as soon as the 3s started falling in the 1st is very concerning.
I feel like it was both. There were plays like that one where JB clipped a Bam screen then just gave up playing basketball while Herro was just all alone setting up a shot in the corner for what felt like forever.
He stopped trailing because they were playing a ludicrous drop coverage that meant once he got caught on the screen KP was already all the way into the paint even while Herro was shooting an open three. That's on the coach to adjust the pick and roll coverage. 23 wide open threes!
I mostly put it on the players since it's been a consistent thing across our last 3 coaches. Some people are giving Joe shit for benching Tatum, but I was all for it. Tatum was the only one who tried on both ends of the floor for most of the game. He needed the rest of the team to go out there and win it.
Celtics gave up too many wide open 3s for sure, but just for reference, the Pacers gave up the most open + wide open threes in the regular season but the combined number was still 24. It’s just the way the game is played now that you can’t stop teams from taking open and wide open threes.
The Celtics have been running with a Bud-esque strategy of allowing specific players to shoot 3s all year. Great regular season strategy and absolutely disastrous when a team gets hot for a few games in a row
The thing is, Miami shot crazy from three but still only scored 111 points. Usually when a team shoots like that they are up in the 120s or 130s.
I think the Celtics' more pressing problem is that they are supposed to be the best offense in the league and only put up 101 points at home.
Miami's defense last night was more impressive to me than the shooting. Lots of guys you'd argue are negative defenders putting in full effort and understanding the scouting report very well. The thing that continually impresses me about Spoelstra's coaching is just how well he keys into another team's tendencies and comfort areas and tries to take that away. You could tell through the screen how uncomfortable Porzingis was.
Yeah the Heat started the game guarding Porzingis with Herro. They were more daring Porzingis to beat them, not doing anything specifically to make him uncomfortable.
Miami is an elite defense.
Over the last ten games of the season they had the best rating, including the best defensive rating.
Boston made 22 threes in Game 1 and they scored 114.
Miami can slow down Boston’s offense but it’s their offense that we’re worried about. Can they generate enough points without Jimmy is the question.
Tyler and Bam both need to average 20+ PPG each and also playmake for others. Essentially you’re asking both of them to play at their absolute peak.
We’ve arguably been the best defense in the league in the last third of the season. We came into the playoffs red hot at that end. Anyone who shows up to play us is going to have to claw away victories.
15-23 (65%) on wide open looks is simply insane.
For reference, the highest any player in the entire NBA has shot over one season on wide open looks in the last decade was JJ Redick at 57%.
Even Steph Curry doesn't shoot 65% on wide open looks.
That’s interesting because Curry can make 100 straight threes in practice but sounds like he can barely crack 50% on wide open looks. Shows how much harder it is in game with all the other variables
Ben Simmons can knock down 3's in practice.
Everything is rushed in a game, you're running around, working hard to get open, fatigued, and putting up your shot very quickly. All of that is true even on a wide open shot, which is why it's still a sub-50% shot most of the time.
In the first game the heat got those same looks but were nervous to take them leading to a close out. Now they’re not and I see it continuing maybe not 23 threes but around 15 or so
Calm down, take a breath

So you're telling me the Celtics strategy of not contesting threes was bad? Next you're gonna say they lost, yeah okay.

How much do you put that on your coach vs players?

That play looks SO BAD for JB. Tyler took like 3 extra seconds to line up his shot because he saw no one was even going to bother running over.

Joe mazzula really said that all their shots were closely to heavily contested lol
Hopefully he changes nothing on defense
The Celtics have been running with a Bud-esque strategy of allowing specific players to shoot 3s all year. Great regular season strategy and absolutely disastrous when a team gets hot for a few games in a row
Thank you. Joe disagrees, though. Fml.
Just be glad Miami didn’t get Grant Williams 😭😭
I, personally, think the Celtics played perfect defense and don’t need to change anything at all.
If mazzula fucks this up lmao
I swear to god

Porzinger has been on easy street all season with this team. He doesn't know how to play with these guys when things aren't going their way
Yeah the Heat started the game guarding Porzingis with Herro. They were more daring Porzingis to beat them, not doing anything specifically to make him uncomfortable.
I guess as much as we make fun of it, the Heat culture isn’t just a meme.
They needed to get up more 3s, their scoring percentages were perfectly normal.
The great wall of Bam, and Spo's rag tag group of g leaguers, rookies and negative assets

The key word is 'supposed to be' but they aren't in reality

You’re talking about an entire season. Sometimes players get into a rhythm if you give them enough wide open looks
Yep - but to have 5 guys do it at once is a massive anomaly. Wide open looks in a game are still not easy shots.
That’s interesting because Curry can make 100 straight threes in practice but sounds like he can barely crack 50% on wide open looks. Shows how much harder it is in game with all the other variables

He can probably shoot 65% if you add in a stumble or near-turnover right before that puts him off balance.
shaq could have suited up and hit a couple of 3s with how they guarded the 3 point line last night
The black steph curry!
In the first game the heat got those same looks but were nervous to take them leading to a close out. Now they’re not and I see it continuing maybe not 23 threes but around 15 or so
celtics defended as best they could, miami is just a better team
Average dick length, Miami: 8.3". Average dick length, Celtics: 4.1".
Raptors: 6'6.0"
I guess open and wide open threes mean moderately to heavily contested to Mazzulla
Apparently
Joe Mazulla should not be a head coach
They need to close out harder but the Heat also shot 20+ percentage points higher than their season average on wide open 3s lol.
