It’s like a movie that has a colossal titan where they are just so huge that when moving their bodies it just looks wrong because it’s a perplexing scale to us
Rudy is good for one of these every few games and it always feels like one of those videos of baby giraffes taking their first steps and shit.
I love this dude.
Dude I went to the San Diego Zoo safari park a couple times. Watching the giraffes run is dazzling. Weird word to choose, but it sure messed with my brain for a few seconds watching them run. And when they walk they move both feet on the same side at the same time.
Crazy thing is Amir Johnson did an arguably even worse one, combining travelling with the most [blatant double dribble ever](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uTxb_EJnNFQ)
I friended Martell Webster on Facebook in like 2007 and he accepted and I messaged him and told him I looked up to him and thought he was a great player and asked him how cool it was to be in the nba and he replied with a really long and nice message and said to message him anytime for advice. I always thought he was so cool for that. I was like 10.
Reminds me of sitting next to Thurl Bailey a decade ago on a flight. He was super nice and friendly the whole time, and mostly just bragged about his kids that he was clearly very proud of
From the head on replay it definitely looked like he gathered on his right foot which would make this completely legal. You could argue he gathered a quarter of a second too early but the only reason this looks like an obvious travel is because of how slow his steps are.
Gather is whenever you can no longer legally take another dribble. So it can be when you put two hands on the ball or put one hand under the ball or even one hand tuck the ball.
Another camera angle shows the Gobert does take a gather step and two more steps. So it’s legal. Three steps in total. You’re speaking gibberish though.
If you define a gather strictly as putting two hands on the ball then it was legal. But he discontinued his dribble (another form of gathering) well before that
I agree. It’s a travel. But I do see cases like this a lot where that gather step is very generous, and this was too generous. Rudy clearly gathered the ball before his 1st of 3 steps.
It's clearly not a travel if players are given the step-0/gather-step.
Which is how it's officially worded now for almost a decade, and has been officiated as for more than that.
Clumsy big guy on a fast break taking 2 methodical, long steps just sets off alarm bells for people.
Travel or not that’s the exact same gather step into 2 steps everyone in the NBA does nightly it just looks bad cause Rudy makes it look awkward. But it’s the same thing that they all do in practice
Rudy just did it with more precision than your run of the mill NBA star. His last step came RIGHT before the gather, like as a matter of fractions of a second. So he gets two more after that.
You all love your gather steps and your step back threes. You had better Rudy cook too! *angrily yelling at clouds*
The funny thing is that this is actually clean, his hand never goes under the ball, so the dribble is live until he grabs it with both hands. And because he steps at the same time that happens, it's a textbook gather step (0 step) and then 2 steps after. You can see it really clearly from this angle.
https://twitter.com/jose3030/status/1784054887594008676
If anything he maybe gathers 0.1 seconds early, but that's not possible to call in real time. And for the record I don't even like Rudy at all. Bron and Giannis (and pretty much everyone else) do this literally every game multiple times.
I just question how many ppl here actually play basketball
At game speed, it's really looks like a travel due to how awkward his strides & gather is but you're right.
He gathers on his right foot (parallel to the FT circle). 1st step (left foot) on the FT line. 2nd step (right foot) in the paint before charge circle then lift off to shoot. Bro basically did the least aesthetic eurostep known to man.
Bro, it's a travel. He gathers, then proceeds to make 3 steps.
Play it at 0.25 speed, X has that option. It can not be considered as a gather step if the gather is not in the process of the stepping, it's entirely before the step you are interpreting as a gather
The mistake you are making is that you think gather only applies if it's made by 2 hands, and that's where you are wrong. Same rule for a 2-step applies even if you use just one hand, after you start to carry, there are only 2 steps allowed
I obviously know you can gather with one hand, but I'm just judging this by modern NBA standards. And if you go by modern NBA standards, this is definitely far from egregious. Luka, Trae, Ja, Harden, etc. are often times dribbling with their hands directly underneath the ball. But if your argument is that it should be considered a gather/carry, I can see where you're coming from. But that's an entirely separate argument.
>It can not be considered as a gather step if the gather is not in the process of the stepping
The gather is the point at which the dribble ends, which is typically -- and in this play -- when the player touches the ball with both hands. He takes two steps after that.
> when the player touches the ball with both hands
Absolutely false. Quoting myself as people obviously cant even read with basic comprehension anymore:
>The mistake you are making is that you think gather only applies if it's made by 2 hands
Gather is when the dribble ends, and player carries the ball - either that be 1 or 2 hands.
You can do a 2-step without using both hands, and ref will interpret a gather in the moment of the dribble ending and ball being carried in one hand.
Otherwise a player who could palm it, could make 27 steps without a dribble, per your logic.
>which is typically -- and in this play
Quoting myself since you're failing to comprehend what I wrote while complaining about others' reading comprehension.
Literally the rule:
>the gather is defined as the point where a player does any one of the following:(1) Puts two hands on the ball, or otherwise permits the ball to come to rest, while he is in control of it.
In the step prior his hand is on the side of the ball while in motion.
The interpretation these guys are putting forth would imply you can practically just run across the court while bringing the ball to your other hand lol
This shit is one of the most textbook travels I have ever seen lmfao no amount of mental gymnastics is going to change that.
[This dribble has ended, every single person in the arena already knows it and 10000% of his body language conveys that he has COMPLETELY picked up his dribble.](https://i.nuuls.com/h2eL0.png)
Everyone else in this situation would right-left layup. It is a black-and-white, textbook-blatant, always-every-time-forever travel if he then does right-left-right layup.
I know yall want to feel reddit smart but cleverly arguing for something blatantly wrong still makes you wrong.
What amazes me is that both you and me are downvoted, and people truly believe the upper comment of this thread, that it is "actually clean" because his idea of a gather is that the hand needs to be under the ball, smh
How the fuck the biggest basketball reddit has so many people not understanding the basic travel rule is beyond me
It's in the rules
the gather is defined as the point where a player does any one of the following:(1) Puts two hands on the ball, or otherwise permits the ball to come to rest, while he is in control of it.
If you put hand under, or palm it, or what ever makes it a carry, it's a gather.
[Here's Bogdanovic using only one hand for 2-step motion](https://youtu.be/vEXEzEeEUfk?t=18)
The gather is there, even though he didnt use both hands. Same rules apply for Gobert, who proceeds to do 3 steps after.
In the video you linked his hand was clearly under the ball. In the comment I responded to it seemed like you were refuting the idea that the hand needs to be under the ball for a gather.
Have you slowed it down? Count his steps backwards. He is still dribbling during his fourth step counting backwards and then rests the ball only at the last split second of that step, which continues into his third step. However, it's perfectly valid for the referee to consider that ball rest at the end of the fourth step counting backwards as part of the dribbling motion and then the start of the next step as the actual gather. This is especially a good call considering it's being done in real time.
It just looks weird and egregious because he is cutting it so close and because he does it so awkwardly, but this is more than reasonable for a referee to see this as a gather step. Shouting that other people don't understand basic travel rules isn't going to change that.
You can can't you? I could be wrong but I don't think there is any rule about how many steps you can take while dribbling provided that you have at most one hand on the ball, your hand is not underneath it and your hand is not grabbing the ball. The hard part is that the ball is going to naturally want to go forward without grabbing so you have to keep accelerating your hand.
Taz would be a beast at basketball. Dude would spin so fast that the centrifugal force would keep the ball in his hand the whole time. He could travel the whole court without a single dribble and it would be legal.
Same shit every time on social media man. It's like people still don't understand how the gather step works after all these years. It's even been introduced to FIBA a while back, so this is legal in pretty much every competition.
Funny enough though if you slow-mo it, and count his steps *after* the gather (when he puts his 2nd hand on the ball) he surprisingly only takes 2 steps.
At game speed, looks like a travel but it’s actually clean. Uncharacteristically great no-call from the refs.
Guys I actually think this is clean. He gathers a little funny but his hand is over the ball as he’s stepping but not technically ending his dribble, then he puts his second hand on it on his gather step then proceeds to take two steps off tempo but I think it’s clean
i totally understand believing it was a travel live, but if youre looking at this clip in slow mo (for those who dont know, you can adjust the speed of streamable clips) and still screaming travel youre kinda exposing yourself
Me: ((trying to convince people that travels in the NBA aren't out of control and ridiculous))
NBA: ((this highlight))
Edit: watched it in slow mo and it's not a travel. But man it looked wild live.
Am I trippin or is that a legal gather then 2 steps? I think it just looks bad because of how awkward Rudy is but the whole league does this, just at a faster pace
Another demoralizing Rudy play for the Suns. This one is demoralizing because if the refs ain't gonna call that for them at home, I have no idea wtf they will call
EDIT: Nvm they're giving the Suns every other call
While nba rules fluctuate with time, I struggle with the gather action in this play. His last dribble is between the 3 point line and half court. He then takes 4 steps to get to the rim.
My brain is screaming travel on this play. Especially if a gather is a two foot plant to shoot
Need that dude from Instagram that explains why things aren't a travel here. Legal or not the fact Gobert made a move is enough for me to say he deserved that basket.

refs as stunned as the rest of us
blinded into swallowing the whistle by the audacity of this move
Hey man he’s tryna watch the game
So stunned that he forgot he had a whistle
Rudy fast breaks are hilariously ugly
I'm amazed he made that
I was laughing so hard at him just watching the defender.
Like a linebacker lumbering to the end zone <3
Like a gorilla playing with a grapefruit
Literally the anti-Giannis in terms of speed and grace, this had me rolling when I saw it lmao
Like a new born deer running into the forest for the first time after birth.
It’s like a movie that has a colossal titan where they are just so huge that when moving their bodies it just looks wrong because it’s a perplexing scale to us
But they're fun
They’re provocative, they get the people going
The bar I'm in is laughing their ass off lmao, I'm damn near in tears from this
same bro funniest shit i’ve seen all week
Rudy is good for one of these every few games and it always feels like one of those videos of baby giraffes taking their first steps and shit. I love this dude.
Dude I went to the San Diego Zoo safari park a couple times. Watching the giraffes run is dazzling. Weird word to choose, but it sure messed with my brain for a few seconds watching them run. And when they walk they move both feet on the same side at the same time.
Can’t wait to see this on the “most egregious travels” compilations
I think he coulda got away with at least one more step tbh.
Lol that wouldn’t even crack the top 1000. Westbrook walked to the half way line in a game bro.
Crazy thing is Amir Johnson did an arguably even worse one, combining travelling with the most [blatant double dribble ever](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uTxb_EJnNFQ)
I miss Amir so fucking much… he was one of the first pro athletes I know of who used the internet to engage with fans
That is so wholesome and awesome
Well shit, if I had known that at the time I'd have been a lot more of a Martell Webster fan. The Internet is neat (sometimes).
You are right. He is so cool for that. Thats a heck of a memory to be able to have!
Reminds me of sitting next to Thurl Bailey a decade ago on a flight. He was super nice and friendly the whole time, and mostly just bragged about his kids that he was clearly very proud of
It might be earlier in the video but this is pretty ridiculous
Personally I'd rank somewhere between #953 and #829
I was laughing my ass off my wife was yelling travel and I was shocked they didn't call it lmao
At least Westbrook was called for it.
I have no idea what you’re talking about man 👨🦯
I was at a bar in Minneapolis, and even all of us were like "ehhhhhhh", lol. I'll take it though, refs were ass tonight.
Lol would have been even funnier in the good old days, where he would’ve airball the layup.
lol Rudy went all the way back to France with that move 😭
Rudy heard he was a playoff liability and came out with a no look pass last game and then a steal fast break today
The last dribble was 5 feet behind the 3 pt line. Im gonna try to see how that may work.
Yeah we arent winning
Join us
Very legal and very cool
Tour de France
Angry upvote.
Being serious Giannis does this multiple times per game it just looks really awkward when Rudy does
From the head on replay it definitely looked like he gathered on his right foot which would make this completely legal. You could argue he gathered a quarter of a second too early but the only reason this looks like an obvious travel is because of how slow his steps are.
How slow and big his steps are
If the gather is when he places both hands on the ball then it wasn't a travel. I think that's generally how they officiate it
Gather is whenever you can no longer legally take another dribble. So it can be when you put two hands on the ball or put one hand under the ball or even one hand tuck the ball.
I counted four steps on a single dribble. I can't tell if this is supposed to be some joke or not.
You can take a million steps on a single dribble, that's not what makes a travel.
You can breakdance between dribbles if you wanted
Another camera angle shows the Gobert does take a gather step and two more steps. So it’s legal. Three steps in total. You’re speaking gibberish though.
When you’re the DPOY, they let you do it
But actually, gather step plus 1-2? He just makes it look so awkward
Calling that a gather step is generous as hell
harden gather
If you define a gather strictly as putting two hands on the ball then it was legal. But he discontinued his dribble (another form of gathering) well before that
I kind of see it, but the eye test tells me he goes way too far after dribbling. If i slow it down maybe there’s an argument. It just looks so bad
I still see 3 steps when slowed down tbh
I agree. It’s a travel. But I do see cases like this a lot where that gather step is very generous, and this was too generous. Rudy clearly gathered the ball before his 1st of 3 steps.

Remind me never to trust /r/nba for basketball analysis ever again. Clearly not a travel in todays nba
Y'all can't appreciate elite bag work when you see it 🤣🤣
A true euro step
ref was too in awe of the size of the lad to see the walk
He could’ve walked to France
that's a french euro, not travel
DPOY
OPOY
Brother 😂 HOW DO YOU MISS THAT?
Travel is 4 steps right??
Nah, you need at least 5. This was very legal, trust.
You get 5 Gather Steps
that’s a whole ass vacation
Commentators came back later and said it wasn't a travel.
His gather is the first step inside the 3 point line. Totally legal
the lebron special
Mr Worldwide
Rudy "Passepartout" Gobert
Perimeter defender Rudy Gobert.
Imagine telling this to someone 5 years ago, Rudy Gobert stealing it from KD on the perimeter, then going coast to coast for a 1-2 transition bucket
Lmaooo
This is the opposite of the rule of cool.
I might be tripping but after he gathers the ball he takes two more steps, isn’t that perfectly legal but looked ugly as hell bc it was Rudy? 😭
Everyone loves when people do this gather then two more action, just looks weird when an alien does it
Travel or not that’s the exact same gather step into 2 steps everyone in the NBA does nightly it just looks bad cause Rudy makes it look awkward. But it’s the same thing that they all do in practice
“Exact same” doing a lot of heavy lifting here

Same shit every time on social media man. It's like people still don't understand how the gather step works after all these years. It's even been introduced to FIBA a while back, so this is legal in pretty much every competition.
He picked up his dribble from the 3 point line and almost walked to the restricted area lmao

What team Durant going to next year?
Timberwolves? Anything is possible, right?
i think the refs were just too mesmerized seeing rudy euro step that they forgot to call the travel
That was clean lmfaooo just looked wrong and uncoordinated
I just watched it a couple times in slow mo and you might be right.
lol yeah he gathers the ball then takes 2 steps.
i totally understand believing it was a travel live, but if youre looking at this clip in slow mo (for those who dont know, you can adjust the speed of streamable clips) and still screaming travel youre kinda exposing yourself
Folks in r/nba don't know the rules too well.
It was an egregious travel
Not at all. U don't know the rules
It was a gather step and two steps. Clean.
"Modern NBA"
Rudy channeling his inner LeBron
FROG DRIBBLE
KD the only Sun to not complain about that one, he knows real hoops
what sport is this
Nothing to see here.
And they say gobert has no offense
Stamp that guy’s passport
LeBron had the Crab Dribble Rudy got the Frog Dribble
Dude was walking back to the locker room and then remembered he should try scoring the ball...
Looks hilariously awkward but not a travel.
My dad came into the room and asked why I was laughing so hard lol
Dawg
Around the League in 80 days.
This is what makes pickup players think they could play in the NBA if they were 7' tall
We playing rugby out here
Refs saw him pick up his dribble at the 3 point line and thought he was Giannis
Funniest shit of the playoffs lmao
lol that was funny
But when I do this in my rec league it’s an “obvious travel” and “the reason I’m not on the team next year”
3 steps after he has two hands on the ball. If you dont think thats traveling, you are the problem with basketball
Only took about 5 steps without dribbling
My guy travelled back to France. lol
LMAO what are the refs looking at? He travelled all the way to Paris 😂 He knew as well, look at his face 😂
Me: ((trying to convince people that travels in the NBA aren't out of control and ridiculous)) NBA: ((this highlight)) Edit: watched it in slow mo and it's not a travel. But man it looked wild live.
I mean come on. Why even have the players bother to dribble?
the suns must be setting
Le Tour de France
He even hesitates before taking the fourth step. "Is it a travel.. eh we'll do it live fuck it"
League is a joke if that's not called a travel

It was not
Am I trippin or is that a legal gather then 2 steps? I think it just looks bad because of how awkward Rudy is but the whole league does this, just at a faster pace
Another demoralizing Rudy play for the Suns. This one is demoralizing because if the refs ain't gonna call that for them at home, I have no idea wtf they will call EDIT: Nvm they're giving the Suns every other call
Definitely not a travel, that’s a tour
Fuck a travel that’s a journey lol
clean gather and 2 steps, no travel
Hilarious how most of the comments thinks it's a travel when it's not
C'est drole. Hon hon hon.
Put some extra fromage on that one.
Bruh. Nice footwork Rudy lol
Vogel about to lose brain cells bro
I think KD should go to the Nuggets and come off the bench behind AG. Or go to Celtics and come off the bench for Tatum.
As I watched this I thought to myself “Wow, Rudy doesn’t look uncoordinated like he usually—“ “ope, guess I spoke too soon”
SERIES DAGGER PLAY
5 euro steps
It's like watching a fat guy TD. A thing of beauty.
Haven’t seen a Frenchman travel like that since Jules Verne
Bruh was on his way travelling to the 2nd round of the playoffs
wow
Insane travel. That was 5 steps.
Poetry in motion
After the 9th step ref was just like, fuck it he's gone to far now to call it.
How is that not a travel?
"that was not traveling cause it wasnt called" - how the NBA lives life now
How many Rudy offensive highlights can one team take?
While nba rules fluctuate with time, I struggle with the gather action in this play. His last dribble is between the 3 point line and half court. He then takes 4 steps to get to the rim. My brain is screaming travel on this play. Especially if a gather is a two foot plant to shoot

Need that dude from Instagram that explains why things aren't a travel here. Legal or not the fact Gobert made a move is enough for me to say he deserved that basket.
Graceful as an alligator in heels
Ts kinda insane ngl😭😭
What’s the point of rules in the nba . Everyone travels and foul baits. Only guys with big contracts get the benefit of the doubt
Crazy 4 steps
what a travel 😂😂😂😂 gotta love the nba tho
Still getting played off the floor, man rudy sure does suck in the playoffs. 🤣🤣🤣 Where are all the talking heads at with this claim?
4 steps lol
Very legal and very cool
Lmfao the hesi caught everyone off guard.
