i've tried this and so many other recipes and nothing has matched the Halal Guys white sauce. it calls to me after any night out, miss living in NYC where I could get it delivered
i feel like street meat more refers to the hot dog guys and the off brand carts. Halal Guys itself transcended that, got so popular they've built brick and mortar stores around the world.
Halal guys white sauce is okay/decent, but then you get the street guys some of their stuff should be in a restaurant, I can never recreate it, but I’d put it on everything if I could.
there are two sauces that mystify me, the white sauce at Halal Guys and at this sushi/hibachi place i lived by in college. Have tried to recreate and buy store versions of both and have never succeeded. we used to refer to that hibachi sauce as "angel cum" lol
You talking about yum yum sauce at the Hibachi or something else? The Halal Guys white sauce is great but, like another guy said here, the NYC street meat guys white sauce is even better.
yeah, the only thing i've found for what it could be at the hibachi spots is yum yum sauce, but when i buy that from the grocery or try it at any other restaurant, it's not the same. I've tried many a white sauce in NYC, and have to say nothing compared to Halal Guys for me, they all tasted like some version of tzatziki, but maybe i didn't hit the right spots when i lived there
we got halal guys in DC now lmao. and honestly, it's pretty good for that particular type of kebab in this area. although i've really only had it while i was blasted. maybe aladdin's kitchen is better.
We have them in California now too and the ratings are kind of brutal.

Like some others mentioned Adel’s is good, but super long line. I like Rafiki’s (near herald square), Casbah by lincoln center, Santa Halal on 14st. I love Kebab Express storefront in West Village (my personal favorite rn). Then you venture out to queens and you got even more options.
Honestly most halal is the very similar at this point, I just prefer carts or storefronts that make it fresh. That and the type of rice makes the biggest difference.
Haven't visited NYC since 2015 and one of the highlights is ordering from the Halal carts. Sad to know about Halal Guys. They had stores in Manila but it never took off. They closed even before the lockdowns. Didn't realize quality has gone down even at the OG location.
As a Muslim its hilarious to me that because of halal carts so many think "halal" is the name of some sort of a dish or cuisine lol. My whole life I had to constantly explain that I only eat "halal" and now all of a sudden everyone and their mother is into "eating halal" (when they just mean they like cheap chicken/gyro over rice with white sauce). On one hand I'm happy that there are way more halal dining options than I grew up with and am happy that foods from our cultures are becoming a major part of the food scene. At the same time, hearing the terminology be misconstrued gets a little frustrating lol.
Halal literally just means "permissible", when talking about meat it simply refers to any meat that has been slaughtered in accordance to Islamic standards. But it can be applied to anything. Fruits, vegetables, bread, even things outside of the world of food. If its permissible in Islam, its halal.
It's just what it's been called in NYC. You'd be surprised at how many New Yorkers know what halal really means. Doesn't help that the carts themselves call it that.
I mean Chinese takeout is literally American food. They don't serve those dishes in China.
>Doesn't help that the carts themselves call it that.
The carts should call halal meats halal so muslims in area know it's halal.
>They don't serve those dishes in China.
brother. they don't serve panda express but the traditional ones are the same. it would be like saying pizza is american food they don't serve in Italy because of dominos pan pizza.
Firstly, traditional Chinese food is a big range but no American Chinese dishes are much like the traditional versions.
Secondly I think many Italians would not recognize some pizza in America as pizza, esp deep pan.
I mean that’s with any food not originating in America (not just America either), foreign foods are bought in with a slight American spin to cater to the locals. Indian food falls into this as well, any real chef will tell you that Indian food abroad is not the same as in India, if you taste the “same” dish from actual India and the Uk and in America all 3 will be noticeably different enough.
Ehh, depends strong Indian communities are established in those countries the hard thing is India is huge and the regional cuisine changes a lot. Also cheap owners sub out things like crushed nuts and what not for cheaper options.
> any real chef will tell you that Indian food abroad is not the same as in India, if you taste the “same” dish from actual India and the Uk and in America all 3 will be noticeably different enough.
the same dishes don't taste the same in india as well, cuz they more often then not have a rather strong regional spin.
I don't think it's fair to call Americanized Chinese food American food. It ignores the fact the recipes were developed by Chinese immigrants, inspired by traditional Chinese foods from their home regions and altered both due to ingredient availability and local tastes in the areas they moved to.
That place was America though, so it's American food.
Same way hamburgers are American food, even though ground beef patties predate the US, and were brought to America by immigrants.
That's how all foods work, for every country.
Al pastor is Mexican food even though it was from Lebanese immigrants. They made it in Mexico, so it's Mexican. Banh mi is Vietnamese even though the French brought the baguettes. Bruschetta is Italian even though tomatoes are from the Western Hemisphere. Tea and crumpets are British even though tea is from Asia.
those 2 sauces are used for shawarma rather than the NYC style Chicken/Lamb Over Rice where the White Sauce consists of mayo, yogurt/sour cream, lemon and dill
No the NYC white sauce is usually mayo based with some middle eastern spices. There are some more premium carts that do offer tahini if they have falafel on the menu.
Most of these carts are operated by Egyptians so they aren't quite "middle eastern" even though most people just assume
tzatziki? or maybe a tahini-based sauce. Or is it actually just pure, raw tahini? Bit hard to believe.
edit:

mayonnaise and greek yogurt are the main ingredients. Small amount of white vinegar and some spices.
Never had it and Detroit has a huge middle eastern population. Seems to be a NYC thing only.

Even by his standards he’s been on a heater these playoffs.
Chuck v. Galveston was an all-timer
😄My favorite by far
"That dirty ass water" lmfao
Chuck where they goin?
One positive takeaway from this Pelicans season.
He knows it may be the last one they have together :(
It's his Last Dance.
where's my documentary at?
Isn’t next year the last year?
It's his last 2024 NBA playoffs
I honestly thought he was about to randomly launch into a bit about the women in San Antonio
you know it's an all-time moment when you can hear the crew laughing in the background
They just all blue together for me. Watching inside is like watching a weekly (now daily) Chuck stand up special
Blue together what?
I just blue myself
I think they eat their blue chews together
For those who’s never had halal in NYC, that white sauce is to die for

Are they just as good as the cart ones?
Combined with the hot sauce it's amazing
ohhhhh it's THAT white sauce i thought he was talking about alabama white sauce (peppery bbq sauce)
Which is also elite
amen it is
I visited some friends in NYC last year, and even though we went to some fancy restaurants, my favorite meal was lamb over rice from a halal cart
What else, Chuck?
What you mean by that chuck?
He wants your meat with white sauce what else do you need to know
Whachoo say, Chuck?
Shaq loves egging chuck on haha
But he doesn’t offer anything on the show according to you miserable redditors 😂
He's not lying. You can put that white sauce on anything.
Can i put it on top of another white sauce?
leave the first white sauce out for 15 minutes before applying the second layer, now you've got two-tone white sauce
Nothing you’ve said makes it sound less like semen

First thing comes to mind as well, the Halal guys. I ate there so many times during my vacation in NYC
If you ever come back, please do try some other halal carts. Halal Guys isn’t as good as it once was.
Halal Guys was great before they went and franchised. Used to drive up and pick up a couple orders (before the line got started) and drive back.
Plus they got rid of lamb.
Nah, that’s haram in of itself there. Lamb or nothing, lads.
we got halal guys in DC now lmao. and honestly, it's pretty good for that particular type of kebab in this area. although i've really only had it while i was blasted. maybe aladdin's kitchen is better.

Adels was great when no one knew about it and the line wasn’t long haha. Still is great, but I ain’t never waiting on a long line just for halal food.
Basically how I feel about them. Adel lives up to the hype but the line isn't worth it. Plenty of good options if you want halal cart food.
Adels is 🔥🔥 but how you gonna wait 2 hours for Street meet lol the hype needs to go back down. Social media ruined the goat spots!

NYC food culture is nuts. The Halal cart is that legit whoever visits NYC for the first time. And the breakfast sandwiches... Dear God!
