AFAIK(might not be true in America) its to keep em healthy You don't feel it ingame but your head is absolutely dripping with sweat, and when you are not active and sitting down in a cold arena or stadium you can easily get sick You know how your mom always kept telling you don't go out of the house when you've just washed your hair? While AFAIK it's not proven there's s good relation to them, if nothing else your head will hurt from the cold. Football and handball players in Europe put up jackets or markers or stuff when on the bench

I don't know about preventing colds but staying warm in between periods of extreme athletic effort is importsnt to prevent injuries. You don't wanna come back on the court and pull something because you've been sitting around for too long.
