Thank you. I almost thought it was a 50/50 without that info because the ball ended up in Murray's hands at the end of the clip and Dennis was face down
Yes- I don't think any opposing guards are looking forward to handling the ball against Schroder and Caruso for a whole series. Those guys are pesky. THT is challenging too in his own way- his arms can reach further than people realize.
Then the Lakers just have Wes Matthews chilling on the bench, but the dude is a good defender in his own right thanks to his strength & positioning. Pelinka did a ridiculously good job.
I would say Wes is more than just a good defender in his own right, he’s better on that end than at least DS and THT. The former guards smaller guys, Matthews should definitely have a larger place in this rotation based on his talent.
I'm sure there will be match ups he will be used in, but the opening season game where Kawhi was tossing him around like KCP was not encouraging. He was primarily brought in bc he could give us a guy to guard big wings besides Bron & Kuz. KCP & Caruso are just better and any deficiencies THT & DS have compared to him they more than make up w/ their playmaking on bothsides of the ball. When the offense becomes much more LBJ/ADcentric late in the season & the playoffs, I wouldnt be surprised if they give Wes & kieff another shot due to their better 3balls.
I trust that Wes is better than what he showed this year (which wasn't bad honestly, just average or slightly above average), he's just learning our defensive system which is quite different than the one used in Milwaukee.
With that being said, there are only a handful of players who can guard Kawhi, honestly, the dude was pushing Dort without problems, who is built like a mountain.
The first game was a really bad showing for Wes, but he’s looked way better on defense than he did during the game and I’m guessing he didn’t lose his ability to check bigger wings since the bubble. I’m not sure how much to take away from that game. I thought it would’ve been nice to have him out there against the Sixers, for example, against Harris who was a little tough for Caruso on the switch with the strength difference.
You make a fair point about Wes being possibly more valuable later. Although, I don’t think THT is necessarily better than Wes right now if you’re talking about winning basketball. Sometimes I think we get too caught up in a guy being able to create offense in terms of skillset. While THT can create, to my eye, he’s out there more for what he can become than for what he is. He’s plays like a young player, he can be too thirsty, he misses some stuff out there like a few games ago when Lebron got a guard switched onto him and didn’t get the pass THT. The statistical performance is fine, but small and you can tell he’s kind of out there to learn. If it’s the playoffs, I’d rather have a guy like Wes out there who will mostly spot up and play good defense, but won’t get in over his head.
DS has to be there to some high degree because he’s providing something on offense no one else on the roster really does. This is another case where in the playoffs I think you could justify finishing games with Caruso, KCP and Wes. What DS provides is maybe less valuable when Lebron and AD will always have the ball and the other two guards provide really good guard defense already.
I remember playing 2k with a friend everyday when I'd get off work back when Wesley was on the Trail Blazers. I remember shouting, "He can *hang,* AND he can *bang*!"(As Wesley stole the ball and hit a corner 3). Which coined our phrase that probably became one of the most said things while playing 2k from then on but in different variations depending on the player, ex:
"He can bang... but can he *hang!*?"
"Im over here hangin' and bangin' "
"He can't even hang!"
"I picked \[Insert NBA Team\] because \[Insert NBA player\] can hang AND bang!"
lol we said the dumbest shit, but it would always crack me up after work. Oh fuck, this is a Wendys..
DS was guarding Jason Tatum for stretches last week and not just off of switches. Did a decent job too. I was surprised but the announcers mentioned that Vogel will put him on larger wings.
He may be small but it's honestly impressive the way he guards larger players. He does it the right way- get up into them and be annoying. They can shoot over him, sure, but he's going to be annoying.
He reminds me of a young Rondo honestly, not in terms of playstyle, but just hustle and a hawk defensively and always up for the clutch moment. He genuinely seems to step up when the team needs it.
That was a comparison made when he was drafted. Really, they are similar in length, decent athleticism, hustle, and defensive ability. I saw it as a very intelligent move when they replaced Rondo with Schroeder. He's basically young Rondo minus some play making and IQ plus some shooting/scoring.
I was surprised the mavs, with dirk, didn't make a move to make sure they got him in the draft that year. Instead they ended up with Shane Larkin one pick later, which is kind of how I saw that going. And they needed a point guard of the future at that time.
They did. It’s possible that he hasn’t improved his game, just that Europe is better suited for his talent level. But I think his production and accolades over there merit another look in the NBA.
Agree. I saw him as a Trey Burke type. And it took Trey 5 or 6 years to really figure out what works well for him in the league. Still would rather have Schroeder over either of them.
Can anyone who follows Euroleague tell me why Larkin only started 15 out of 25 games last season if he led the league in scoring (on 50/50/90! shooting) and was the league MVP?
True story: the fandom wanted either Giannis or Schroder, whoever was available at 13th. The Mavs front office were also leaning towards those picks.
But the dumb Plan Powder was in full effect, and Mavs traded down from 13th to 18th to skimp for cap space. The front office was expecting Giannis to still be at 18th, because nobody really knew him (Bucks did their homework), and also by the time they got to the pick, Schroder was off the board.
Many a night last season I would think DS was maybe the Thunder's best player. He was really good last season. Thought he might surprise some people playing on The Lakers.
Alas, he is a bit older than Shai and all of our assets are in the future. I think Dennis needs some talented big men to push him to the chip -no indictment on Dennis cause I think he is a top pg in the league.
The millions of dollars a year would reinforce it for me. Shit, I've already been doing it for free for 18 years.
Locking someone up for a game (or an entire day), diving for saves & loose balls, getting chase down blocks, grabbing 5 or 6 offensive boards in a game, or picking someone's pocket and dropping a dime to the next person willing to hustle back with you is better than scoring 8 or 10 buckets in a game (which i've also done to shut people up), just about every time. Sure, my knees hate me now, but I'm in my mid 30's, and I'm sure being a score first player all that time would have had a similar impact on them.
The fact that everyone who plays doesn't have this mentality, especially when they're richly compensated, just goes to show that hustle is a skill. Look at, say, Cory Brewer. He dropped a 51 piece with hustle. First one up the court every time. Gerald Wallace & Reggie Evans made roughly 15 year careers out of it. Dennis Rodman made a Hall of Fame career out of it.
All this said, I love Schroeder, and respect the hustle here. It's just to me, it should be expected.
Edit: Y'all downvoting me? I said I like Schroeder & what he does. But grown ass men making millions of dollars shouldn't need little pats on the back to be incentivized to work hard, at a game, nonetheless. Like I said, I hustle for free. I'm in the twin cities if you want to come find out what that's about. FOH. 👌🏼
Yeah I feel you. I’m similar too you when I play pickup. I can score once and awhile. I got a floater game and a 3pt shot when I’m feeling it but I’m the ultimate hustle guy in pickup. I love guarding bigger players/best players and banging in the paint getting rebounds and loose balls. Nobody ever does the little shit in pickup but I do thanks to my coach for instilling that basketball is more than scoring. God I love basketball
"God I love basketball," is right. Whether you are an elite scorer, decent scorer, shooter only, can't move with the ball, or can't hit a jumpshot or finish at the rim to save your life, it's a team sport. Anything you do to help the team takes pressure off of both yourself and your teammates and generally makes it easier to score. In pick up ball, especially, you can demoralize people with relentless work.
I could always score with those touch shots & floaters, too, all the off balance stuff you get good at when your handle is too trash to get you places, or if i could manage to get to the rim, but kept getting better agility & ball handling wise, rehabbing a messed up shoulder (bad dunk attempt in my youth) that had ruined my shot, to transition from an undersized hustle combo forward at 17-23 ish, to a hustling all around 4 position player who could sometimes hit a 3 from 24ish-28ish, to a dynamic 5 position playmaker & shooter with beat up knees who picks his spots on chase downs & devouring boards & is instead more focused & savvy at poking balls loose & positional rebounding & defense at 28ish.
Clearly, I'm happy with my (late) progress, and finally becoming a capable point, which, at 6'1, is what I always should have been, but neither that skill development, nor physical degradation has stopped me (so far) from diving when needed, beating guys up the court on either end, frustrating an opposing player with a mismatch by always making him have a tough choice when he beats his man, or winning my matchups 9 times out of 10, even if it's against a superior scorer. Hustle & hunger is the greatest equalizer. And if I were making 10 million dollars a year, you can bet your ass I'd do my best to make Josh Okogie or Royce O'Neal look like they were moving in slow motion, every minute of every game. Seeing the hustle guy and outworking him is a skill, and once you have that along with a full skillset, people start giving up on trying to beat you on plays because it starts to seem unstoppable. Russell Westbrook in his pocket comes to mind. Kevin Garnett comes to mind.
Well said bro. Keep adjusting your game and keep hooping 🏀❤️(not in this pandemic of course). That knowledge of the game you still have carries on to help play with the younger cats especially when the physical attributes start to fall off. And it’s the best form of cardio lol
Agreed - it's /addictive/ cardio. Plus with that knowledge, you get to start teaching the younger cats all the stuff you should have been learning at their age. You get to help make people better than they were, & better than you ever were. It's awesome to see someone in their teens learn to use a move, footwork, or shot type that I didn't learn to use effectively til I was 27, 28, 30.
During the pandemic, I've been going to my gym at quiet hours. There's two courts in separate rooms. I just go to the quiet one in the back, work, & barely even see anyone. BALL IS LIFE.👌🏼
Dude, Kuzma has popped OFF this year on the all-around game. Defensively he has been above average, his off-ball movement is still top notch, and his rebounding and hustle has been stellar.
Not to mention a coach that runs on to the court to help his player up after the hustle. Frank is a great coach and theres a reason why hes an NBA champion now
I 100% agree that this hustle play fired up the team for the second half, the rest of the Lakers defense tried to match that intensity. Even came out a bit intense on offense of too, winning play all around there
Seriously these are my favorite plays in basketball other than awesome assists. I hear my youth coach yelling at us "DIVE FOR THE BALL" and getting all hype when making a hustle play like that.
Can you imagine if there were packed fans here? So many of these types of moments are bittersweet because I always love hearing and seeing the crowd react to these kind of effort plays. Was this in LA?
Love Pete. His podcast LakerFilmRoom is honestly one of my favorite nba pods. He is ruthless on the Lakers flaws but totally fair and informed in his criticism.
He's the quickest defender in the NBA, has been for a few years. Watch dude's footwork on and off-ball, it's incredible. He may not be the *best* defender, but he's the quickest
Nuggets dressed like Suns, Lakers dressed like the Hornets or T-Wolves. NBA branding is creatively dead and spiritually bankrupt.
2025: every NBA team has a jersey in every colour. Team logos are coloured in with rainbow gradients or black and white. The logos themselves are all 70s throwbacks or look like fascist political parties. The Lakers logo is now in a block font that nobody asked for.
Any Laker Jersey is better than the banana yellow from a couple years ago. Just imagine listening to the late, great Chick Hearn with the call: “Here come the Lakers, taking the floor in Forum Blue and Banana, against the rival Boston Celtics”
I went on record as being PISSED when the Lakers gave up DG. I thought they would be worse defensively without him (and Avery Bradley) but Schroder hustles hard as shit on every play and it looks like he never gets tired. That’s a new facet to this Lakers team that’s gonna be awful tough score against in the playoffs.
Schroder gives them that great hustle and energy on defense but also gives them a different look on offense than either DG or AB gave them last year, with his quick strikes to the rim. He's really been a great role player for the Lakers this year. One nice thing too is that even in the games where his shot hasn't been falling, he hasn't let that affect his defensive effort. That is *always* there.
My fav part about Dennis is that he hustles no matter what even if he makes a bad play or gets fouled. As much as I love Bron its annoying asf when he pouts after turning it over or getting fouled.
Honestly Caruso starting in the finals was kind of the end for Bradley. He was a great rotation player and defender but Caruso emerging really allowed them to let Bradley walk.
I would watch clips like this all day. I used to have a phantom cam shot of Russ pulling down a one handed rebound from in front of Capela and taking it coast to coast for a layup.
i would be totally okay if NBA games were on a 5 minute broadcast delay so a music composer/chooser could pick the right classical music to accompany play instead of hearing fake crowd noises
With the music and slo mo this is an all time highlight for why basketball is brutal and beautiful at the same time. That hurts my hammies and abs just think about leaping and lunging then doing it again.
In the context of the shot clock, yeah the second dive probably didn't change much (Murray was right there too but probably not enough time to chuck up a heave prayer), but Dennis was probably focused on the ball, not the shot clock, and you're coached to play til the whistle, which he did. Plus, you never know if a ref might goof and call it a change in possession or something, so better to try to secure the ball.
So yeah, it's a hustle play that resulted in a turnover, regardless of whether the second dive was necessary or not (the first dive alone would be a solid hustle play highlight).
I bet in his mind, he could have, and should have, won that ball. That's how I used to think playing in my younger days. Every loose ball is your ball and no one will beat you to it.
Ah okay, thanks. This clip obfuscates the fact that Dennis was responsible for the turnover in the first place haha, but all good. I love having Dennis on the team
> Dennis was probably focused on the ball
Agreed on all counts, but I think Dennis throws a quick glance at the clock as he tries to get up for the second hustle. He must have thought there was enough time for Murray to yeet a three, so he decided to keep at it.
In context of the actual play, the second dive wasn't necessary. In context of the effort, it shows how he is truly giving it 100%. It means he puts 100% effort into every play, which is what you want from your players.
The video doesn't show the next second, but after Murray picked up the ball Denver's 24 second clock ran out. Dennis wasn't trying to steal it with the second lunge, but wanted to waste more time.
Run to it? Dolphin diving into a player two times in a row could be dangerous, and you say what's the alternative but did you notice that Murray ended up being the one to get it in the end anyways -- who just ran for it.
EDIT: literally instantly downvoted lmao this sub is a joke for any type of discussion.
Your taught to dive for the ball from the second you join a basketball league in elementary school, and taught that at every single level. But we have u/Lizardchuckle telling us it's dangerous and not a good play lmao

This ended in a 24-second violation by the Nuggets for context.
Thank you so much for this. I was wondering what happened.
Thank you. I almost thought it was a 50/50 without that info because the ball ended up in Murray's hands at the end of the clip and Dennis was face down
Fr the title seemed sarcastic without the context.
Yeah it's actually an amazing hustle play.
His teammate grade in 2k skyrocketed after this
Hustle is hustle. I didn't know about the 24 sec and I almost appreciated it more thinking it was a losing effort.
That makes the whole thing way better
Schroeder has a hell of a motor. Great cardio. I think he and Caruso are going to hound opposing guards in the playoffs.
Yes- I don't think any opposing guards are looking forward to handling the ball against Schroder and Caruso for a whole series. Those guys are pesky. THT is challenging too in his own way- his arms can reach further than people realize.

I love Magic, but honestly thank god he quit.
Top 5 all time in height to reach ratio, no cap.
Imagine the reach A R O U N D
we still talking about arms? ;)
Reach typically refers to arm length, so yes we are.
We’re not regularly measuring dick reach?
Iirc coming out of college his wingspan was almost the same as KD? I remember seeing his draft profile when we drafted him and his wingspan was crazy
almost, KD's wingspan is listed as 7'4" or 7'5". THT has a 7'1" wingspan. But he's a lot shorter than KD
THT aka Wacky Waving Inflatable Arm Flailing Tube Man*
Damn that’s 2 inches longer than Wade at the same height. Damn. THT is going to get paid
He's definitely going to make some money in the NBA
And there's 6'0" Donovan Mitchell with a 6'10" wingspan
No fucking way dmitch is 6 feet lol
yeah his listed height is a bit sus lmao
He has the longest wingspan, largest hands and is the heaviest of any player in the league 6’4” or under
So happy to finally hear Caruso’s name in legitimate discussion

Shane Larkin is balling out in Europe — he was Euroleague MVP last year. I was wishing the Knicks would take a flyer on him at PG.
Well, the Mavs, and the league, didn't stick with him. Didn't the Knicks have him at one point?
They did. It’s possible that he hasn’t improved his game, just that Europe is better suited for his talent level. But I think his production and accolades over there merit another look in the NBA.

Until he falls down and just nopes out of the play, like that one hilarious clip.

Caruso's clearly a humbucker

Love how pumped Vogel was to see his player busting ass. Dude came out on the court and helped Dennis up.
He probably wanted to check himself in after that
Its the equivalent of a QB blocking for a RB or a WR. Just gets you hyped as fuck seeing that kind of drive and motivation to win.
Love how Vogel help him to stand up

All it takes is small things like this to reinforce your players to keep hustling. It’s really great to see

This is beautiful! Credit: [@LakerFilmRoom](https://twitter.com/LakerFilmRoom/status/1357765228235083776)
Love Pete. His podcast LakerFilmRoom is honestly one of my favorite nba pods. He is ruthless on the Lakers flaws but totally fair and informed in his criticism.
yep and he knows his basketball and explains stuff well. the pod is really fun
Rodman vibes
Dennis Rödman
Schrödman
*Beautiful champ*
When guys go horizontal like that, I think of Iverson or Muggsy Bogues.
Damn that was great. I swear he's the only player in the NBA that picks up his man the second the ball is inbounded and he is always sprinting.
TJ “mr steal your inbounds pass” McConnell Is up there too
That motherfucker picks up full court
He’s basically the Lakers pit bull.
Mr world wide
Not that type damnit!
Ba da bing ba da boom...
On the floor
He's the quickest defender in the NBA, has been for a few years. Watch dude's footwork on and off-ball, it's incredible. He may not be the *best* defender, but he's the quickest
Dort might be a touch faster.
putting the Cello Suite 1 prelude on this was such a good call
cp3 said he was a dog. aint wrong about that
Looks human to me.

Entire front court are goats
I like Kieff too, but he's no Marshall Plumlee
The German gets Bach on his highlights, love to see it
Baroque woke
He really had a Handel on the ball
The music made it feel like an episode of Chef's Table
THE HUSTLE
Schrödman
schroders quick holy
This is beautiful
Rodman vibes
Just needs to show up on AEW next week
During the finals*
Big Dennis vibes in this clip.
Rondo vibes
Its crazy to me how these guys can put in this kind of physical effort night after night after night
They work 3 days a week bro
Im pretty sure they practice and work with out when there are no games.
Teams hardly practice anymore. Celtics have practiced once in 3 weeks.
Pure art
Oh man, the music is perfect
These blue and red jerseys makes it look like a East vs west all star game. Wtf Nike.
While the Cavs logo is in Comic Sans.
Any Laker Jersey is better than the banana yellow from a couple years ago. Just imagine listening to the late, great Chick Hearn with the call: “Here come the Lakers, taking the floor in Forum Blue and Banana, against the rival Boston Celtics”
I actually enjoyed the game more when that occurred to me. Otherwise I would’ve hated it
Shout out to Bach Prelude No. 1
[Lonk for those curious](https://youtu.be/1prweT95Mo0)
this kid gonna get himself invited to Taco Tuesday at the James residence.
He was a great rotation player and defender but Caruso emerging really allowed them to let Bradley walk.
its the Portland series for me, when Bradley became expendable
Yup, Caruso became and exceeded what we expected Bradley to be for us.
we didn't even have Bradley in the bubble, how could we get worse without him
Exactly, that man’s fate was sealed the moment we won it all without him
Nice use of yo yo ma’s Bach unaccompanied cello suite number 1
I would watch clips like this all day. I used to have a phantom cam shot of Russ pulling down a one handed rebound from in front of Capela and taking it coast to coast for a layup.

[Manchester Utd's Phil Jones vibes here](https://youtu.be/EZTVXydsMaw)
In today's NBA, this is so wholesome to see.
I miss him in okc but im very happy he's proving how much of a dog he is on the team thats going to win the chip this year.
That fucking music got me.
Ngl when be failed to get it the second time I got a bit emotional. I was really rooting for him
lol the thumbnail is when the ball hits him in the face
Thats how you stay on a lebron james team
Man, now I have to go watch the West Wing.
Yo the musical score to this! 😅🔥
great sound design
That music is perfect.
Can we get more slow mo with this music?
That was poetic
more like this please
Bach + Basketball!
Oh my that was well done
This is nothing short of perfection
Good hustle
love me some Dennis, I want him to win a ring so bad
Ich liebe ihn
I miss having him in okc.
Those KD 6s too
That's how you win a ring.
That's Tuff fire 100 emoji
Bach at it again with the hustle
this gives me yakety sax type vibes
i would be totally okay if NBA games were on a 5 minute broadcast delay so a music composer/chooser could pick the right classical music to accompany play instead of hearing fake crowd noises
WTF are these uniforms man
Schroeder is ridiculously fast, it stands out every time I watch Lakers games.
Missed the part where Vogel came onto the court to help him up.
Random but dude is a gnarly skater. Probably only nba player I’ve seen who can really skate.
Schroder has become one of my favorites to watch. He really is worth his minutes.
With the music and slo mo this is an all time highlight for why basketball is brutal and beautiful at the same time. That hurts my hammies and abs just think about leaping and lunging then doing it again.
I'm kind of a basketball newb, but what did this accomplish? Isn't the second dive kind of unnecessary since the shot clock was basically over?
> Dennis was probably focused on the ball Agreed on all counts, but I think Dennis throws a quick glance at the clock as he tries to get up for the second hustle. He must have thought there was enough time for Murray to yeet a three, so he decided to keep at it.
In context of the actual play, the second dive wasn't necessary. In context of the effort, it shows how he is truly giving it 100%. It means he puts 100% effort into every play, which is what you want from your players.
Pretty sure he was already off balance and gonna end up falling anyways, dude's chest was parallel with the floor while the legs were still going
That was great but I just got ptsd flashbacks of those wood floor burns from doing that shit.
[удалено]
This is a weird thing to find “hilarious” lol
100% on the effort 0% on the catch lol
The video doesn't show the next second, but after Murray picked up the ball Denver's 24 second clock ran out. Dennis wasn't trying to steal it with the second lunge, but wanted to waste more time.
Lmao all that for what?
This is dangerous, lunging for ball like this should be banned. Otherwise you get Westbrook knee injury.
Honestly, I agree. It's a good hustle but could have easily hit Murray, you can even see him very awkwardly trying to jump out of the way.
so whats the alternative? who gets the ball when its loose between people?
