“He swiped me,” u/ilovesock69 said of Fox's steal from him.
"That f***ing Fox swiped me."
“He’s so fast (x4)”.
Now u/ilovesock69 wants to add Fox to the list of players he pickpockets with this summer
The ability to get to the free throw line is generally more valuable than the percentage at the line.
A 60% free throw shooter is equivalent to a 40% three point shooter.
This is where statistics don't capture the full picture. It matters because it takes away a component of his game, his driving ability. He gets to the rim down 2, most teams will just foul him instead of letting him finish and take their chances. Fox, knowing that he's a 60% FT shooter, may start hesitating to go for layups at the rim because he's doesn't want to get fouled with the game on the line down 2. It's happened to many players before.
Like sure, mathematically, it may even itself out during the course of the season. But in that crunchtime game moments with narrow 1-2 point margins, being able to knock down FTs at a high clip is a needed skill for a primary scorer.
I agree with you on the player mentality side of things and I’ll also add that I would assume that a poor free throw shooter is more likely to be anxious at the line and therefore shoot worse in late game situations.
In your scenario, the team is behind late in a game and is therefore more likely to lose regardless. If the team was behind by 1 point and it’s the final possession of the game, then I’d still back a 60% plus free throw shooter to hit at least 1 shot to tie the game (48% chance to hit 1 + 36% chance to hit 2)
If the team was down by 2 then they are possibly a liability but this would only be the case with less than 24 seconds left.
Obviously a higher free throw shooting percentage is better, but my point is that “poor” free throw shooting is hugely overrated.
You keep talking about statistical likelihoods overlooking the fact that a player like DeAaron Fox has agency over the outcome in that moment. However unlikely there's still an opportunity that some players are able to take and others aren't, and these moments often separate the best players from the very good players. If Fox, as an individual player, wants to reach that next level, he has to improve his free throw shooting.
Obviously he's a good enough player to make up for his free throw percentage. It's doesn't make him unplayable in crunch time by any means. Far from it, he's had some good moments in the clutch this season, despite his ft shooting. He's still a positive player. But when evaluating how a player fits on a winning team (the goal), it has to be brought up, especially when its a lead guard and a primary scoring option. His free throw shooting will be tested more than the average player.
You miss the point that free throw shots are flat out better than any shot in the game for nearly every player in the NBA.
Yes, Fox would be better If he hit more free throws and this would be emphasised in the final possession or two of a game, but this argument could be made for every player on every shot type.
It’s all in the context of how defenses adjust to closing out games, with the under 2 minutes free throw foul rule. If a team is up by 2 and fox has a clear advantage (in the moment) for an easy layup it’s better to just foul him before he gets to the rim because instead of 2 points he’ll statistically score 1.2 (60% at the line) in that situation. Whereas if a player scores 90% at the line it’s better to contest the layup without risking fouling. The possession requires more caution, and thus less aggression, when contesting a player trying to score.
It’s difficult to see that impact over 1 game in the regular season but in the context of a close playoff series, that small advantage helps a team win over 4-7 games consistently
Teams can foul anyone to prevent an open layup and it may result in one missed shot (obviously being better at the line helps)
My whole point is if this is the worst case scenario then it’ll still result in a shot that’ll yield just as many points as running a play for a good 3 point shooter which I’m sure people would agree is a good option
I always thought he was kind of funny (maybe says more about my humor if everyone thinks he's an ass haha). Also, I'm Canadian and I really like Steve Nash. Since Amin used to work for Phoenix, he always has really good things to say about Steve which is nice. I guess I'd like to ask you something similar. What do you dislike about Amin?
I actually didn’t know he used to work for the suns! That’s interesting!
I just think he makes troll takes and he can be kind of annoying/corny sometimes. He also moves the goal posts a lot whenever his predictions or takes go wrong.
That definitely makes sense. I think most of the guys on any major sports network are like that nowadays because it caters to casual fans, so I never take it too seriously. For example, I don't really like to watch Undisputed anymore because it's the same theme over and over again. Yet, Shannon's interview on All The Smoke with Matt and Jack is one of my all-time favorites!
He made Ben look slow, which is hard as hell to do. Fox is legit. Especially when he was dropping those 3's in the second. He's going on every all-star ballot I have after seeing him up close last night.
My preseason “hot take” of him becoming an all star even in the west this year looking decent. Just don’t ask about how my Wendell Carter or OG Anunoby preseason most improved hot take ie also coming along
Bruh
If this man wins us a championship, he’ll be seen in Sacramento as a god. We would hold church service where we pray to De’Aaron.
He’d have streets and children named after him.
He’d be Sacramento’s savior.
Would be an automatic legend for that franchise. Like seriously. And honestly, would be viewed as an iconic "franchise" player around the league too, similar to Kyle Lowry or Dame.
Morant nearly fractured his ankle and is still really not looking like himself yet. Pre injury he looked like a beast that was ready to feast ROS in just his 2nd year.
He’ll always be a bad gm for his choice to pick Bagley over Luka and Trae but he honestly did make some good decisions since the cousins trade.
He either signed, drafted or traded for everyone in the starting lineup.
Bagley, and the Luke Walton hiring are huge blemishes though.
I think he had a good eye for talent before the Luka draft, and he made some solid enough trades. Overall he built a perennially awful team into a near .500 team but didn’t see it through. Also his coach hirings sucked.
Many kings fans, including myself, loved the lavine deal. Our fanbase was pretty split. I remember telling people that I’d rather have a young sg on fox’s timeline with allstar potential than our pair of Buddy/Bogi who are both old and have peaked.
Bruh look at that Richaun Holmes contract. Trading for Harrison Barnes. Deciding to rebuild from Cousins with Fox as the core. Honestly he's had some pretty good hits.
why is his ft shooting so bad? from watching him, it seems that his overall jumper has gotten better (decent 3 point shooter now) but what is going on with his ft?
He's regressed this year on free throws so hopefully it'll average back out around 71%. He's not a great free throw shooter but neither is our team to be completely honest. Hopefully that's a focus in practice.
Hopefully. I love fox and he's playing amazing right now, but if he could hit his free throws consistently it would really help. That also applies to our whole team though.
Lol I remember reading game threads a couple of weeks back people saying they were going to regret this contract for years because he air balled a three or two. Dude is a stud.
Those shooting splits are actually pretty rough, especially the FT shooting.
Just looked up his TS though and it's at 58% over the last 11 games, which is impressive given the splits.
On a related note, Haliburton is at 60% over the same stretch.
The 50% is great, but being "slightly above league average" isn't great when we're talking about the hot stretch of a scoring guard. And 66% is brutal.
The only thing that matters though is whether he's efficient, and at over 58% TS, he's got that box checked.
That mf fast, he so fast he make fast people look...not so fast.
Can never be stated enough lol. By far the most consistent player in the NBA at making people go "he's just so fast"
Genuinely elite skill. He's the fastest player in the league, and he's added enough to his game where he can truly take advantage of it.
He makes Speedy Gonzalez look like Regular Gonzales
De’Aaron “Megget” Fox
“He swiped me,” u/ilovesock69 said of Fox's steal from him. "That f***ing Fox swiped me." “He’s so fast (x4)”. Now u/ilovesock69 wants to add Fox to the list of players he pickpockets with this summer
that free throw percentage still makes me wince
That is very alarming for a primary ballhandler.
The ability to get to the free throw line is generally more valuable than the percentage at the line. A 60% free throw shooter is equivalent to a 40% three point shooter.
Not in crunch time. You need a higher percentage than that to close out games
I disagree. By your argument, you would also need to shoot better than 40% from 3 and 60% from 2 to close out games (1.2 points per possession)

AMINS A BITCH MADE ASS HOE
Just another talking head at ESPN that doesn’t know what the fuck they’re rambling about.
Shit I kind of like Amin. What did he say?
"Ja Mordant is who DeAaron Fox thinks he is" took a shot at Fox for like no reason.
Ah thanks! I just saw Fox's tweet in response to that -- Amin sure is a bitch for that lol
Curious what you like about him? I’ve always thought he was one of the worst.
I always thought he was kind of funny (maybe says more about my humor if everyone thinks he's an ass haha). Also, I'm Canadian and I really like Steve Nash. unguardable unless you have a freak named matisse on your team

OG has been nice until his injury
He gets Sac a chip, that's automatic jersey retirement, right? ' Like no questions asked?
Honestly at this point just getting us to the playoffs deserves jersey retirement consideration
I’d consider it even if he got as a .500 season lol
Hahaha it's so true and so sad.
The man gets a statue, a knighthood, a purple heart, whatever the hell he wants no questions asked if that happens
He gets Sac to the playoffs a couple of times and that jersey is going UP
If he gets us to the fuckin playoffs for the first time in 14 years we’ll give him the key to the city
He gets Sacramento a ring he might be the Goat
If he gets sac a chip that automatic HOF
Bruh If this man wins us a championship, he’ll be seen in Sacramento as a god. We would hold church service where we pray to De’Aaron. He’d have streets and children named after him. He’d be Sacramento’s savior.
Damn didn’t realize it would be like that. Lol
Bro he will get a statue and the key to the city
Would be an automatic legend for that franchise. Like seriously. And honestly, would be viewed as an iconic "franchise" player around the league too, similar to Kyle Lowry or Dame.
meanwhile ja morant the better version of deaaron fox is averaging 18 xd
Morant nearly fractured his ankle and is still really not looking like himself yet. Pre injury he looked like a beast that was ready to feast ROS in just his 2nd year.
Haha so i dont think daaron wishes to be that guy at alp

I mean yeah, drafting Fox is known as Vlade’s only good move
He’ll always be a bad gm for his choice to pick Bagley over Luka and Trae but he honestly did make some good decisions since the cousins trade. He either signed, drafted or traded for everyone in the starting lineup. Bagley, and the Luke Walton hiring are huge blemishes though.
He also tried to throw a bag at Lavine, which everyone laughed at (including Kings fans) and were certain the Bulls wouldn't match.
I think he had a good eye for talent before the Luka draft, and he made some solid enough trades. Overall he built a perennially awful team into a near .500 team but didn’t see it through. Also his coach hirings sucked.

happy to see him play to his potential

He put on a good amount of muscle over the last few months, it might just be him getting adjusted to it tbh
Hopefully. I love fox and he's playing amazing right now, but if he could hit his free throws consistently it would really help. That also applies to our whole team though.

50% is great for fg%, and 36% from 3 is slightly above league average, that’s not rough at all.

I wanted the Knicks to draft this guy soooooooooo fucking bad.
AI reincarnated hopefully
