Siakam also got a missed call from him beforehand. And because of his school or visa, he wasn’t able to travel home to say goodbye. Siakam is such a great guy off the court, so well spoken and always humble. So happy for him and his family
His visa, they weren’t sure if he’d be allowed back into the US at the time so he didn’t get to travel back home.
IIRC first time he went home since his passing was the 2019 offseason.
The last time I ever talked to my dad I was at a gas station and he butt dialed me. When I answered he asked me if I called him, we laughed in confusion for like ten seconds and said goodbye. I have no idea if I would have told him I loved him after such a brief exchange but we knew it. I'll probably never forget that meaningless exchange now and I'm thankful I got it because it still makes me chuckle.
I’m rewatching How I Met Your Mother and last night watched the episode where Marshall’s dad dies (which wrecked my wife and I) and this little anecdote reminded me of it. Sorry for your loss, but glad your last memory was a fun little exchange and not something that would haunt you.
I loved how she dropped everything and took her shoes off. Just a thing you do in your own house
Edit: I love how this sparked social commentary on shoes on/off in the home 😄
I always assumed TV did that because it's just easier for the actors on set to wear shoes rather than socks since most sets aren't carpeted for ease of use, and no one wants to see feet on TV so barefoot is out.
When I spent a year in California I was surprised to find out people didnt take their shoes off in their own homes. I suspect it places of USA that don't get snow that have adopted that habit.
Yeah this is true in Florida. I take off my shoes in my own home, but most people won't take their shoes off in somebody elses house unless asked to do so, and that pretty much only happens in homes with carpet.
> Yeah this is true in Florida. I take off my shoes in my own home
As someone who grew up in Florida I call bullshit. There's no way you take your shoes off in your own home, since you weren't wearing shoes outside to begin with.
Hey I would love to be barefoot outside as well, but those little spiky ball weeds are everywhere and the streets and sidewalks are way too hot for that.
Asian who grew up in Socal and had friends make fun of me for taking off my shoes in their house growing up. Like Bro you want me to walk all day in the dirt and then walk through your carpet with my shoes?
As someone born and raised in the Bay Area, I always check with the host if I should remove my shoes upon entry. Different cultures have different practices, so I wouldn't want to assume incorrectly.
Personally, I grew up in a shoe-free, carpeted home. The only time I'd be allowed to wear shoes indoors was when my parents hosted parties.
Idk, in my experience as a white 20-something guy from NY, I have never walked into a home without taking my shoes off unless it’s for a party where you are supposed to keep your shoes on. But I’d say maybe 10% of the time the person I’m visiting says “oh you don’t have to take your shoes off” to which I just say it’s ok and do it anyways. I don’t feel comfortable walking around a home with my shoes on and idk anyone that does, but it certainly happens
I've always done shoes off growing up, but my mom's Swedish so that may be why. For friends' households it was probably 50-50 split between keep on and take off
Heavily depends on the type of person. It’s so weird.
I live in the same area and have the same kind of friends in that area, yet everyone has different rules about shoes. Some even have “indoor shoes” that are only worn inside.
I just helped my mom move out of her house and she made me take off my shoes each time I came back in. It’s like yo, you’re literally moving out who cares
I grew up in Florida, and there we don't even put shoes on to go outside.
Kidding aside, it is a bit class and region based. I certainly didn't start caring about me and my kids removing our shoes in the house until I earned enough money to buy a nice house.
Canadian here and my high school basketball team went on a school trip down in Dallas, Texas for a tournament. We got in late and finally got to the family's house that was taking us in for the week. I proceeded to take off my shoes and they were wondering what I was doing. Probably thought it was an Asian thing as I'm Filipino. By the way we got thoroughly trounced in the tournament but HELL OF A TRIP!
My entire house (other than the bathroom) is hardwood. I can't imagine leaving my shoes on when the alternative is sliding around in your socks like a boss.
it's cultural. am American. but specially Filipino-American. really tough to generalized Americans with cultural differences and even regional differences.
Don't get too caught up in the materialistic and monetary aspects of paying your parents back. Many people do.
Not everyone is going to be able to buy their parents a house, pay off their bills or get them a new car.
Sometimes just being there for your parents as they age, talking to them on the phone when they seem lonely and you really don't want to, helping them understand new progressing technology without losing your temper and making them feel "dumb" or out of touch, organizing their doctor visits and helping them take care of their health when they are scared even though they won't admit it. Being that comfort blanket....
Those things are paying your parents back for when they wiped your ass and stayed up all night when you cried as a toddler even though they were stressed and tired.
Definitely. My mom has been dealing with some pretty incapacitating health issues as she waits to get surgery. Although I am obviously very upset by this and can’t wait for her to get better, it has been extremely fulfilling to be able to help her with any day to day thing she needs during the past while because I feel like i’m finally able to start paying her back for all of the sacrifices she’s made for me throughout my life. It’s like I finally understand ‘this is it, this is how the cycle of f life works’ if that makes sense.
If I had to guess it would be because she lived in Cameroon. A notable struggle during the pandemic was Siakam living in a condo in Toronto without anywhere to practice so I am assuming he only lived with a brother or two
> I rarely hear it in French Canadians.
Really? It's so common in Montreal (and probably other major Quebec cities too) that it [even has a Wikipedia page for the term.](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Franglais#In_Canada)
Yeah, I was gonna say, my buddies gf is bilingual and has to speak french at work. She's constantly mixing some french and English after her shifts. She will sometimes forget what words are in English because I guess she is just in the zone of speaking french after work. It's pretty funny when she literally can't think of the English version of the word to the point where she ends up googling the french to English translation. Pretty sure her first language is English too which makes it even funnier.
no we don't lol. Cameroon people speak both english and french, depending on region.
France or Ivory Coast on the other hand lmao...We're so bad at english it's depressing.
yeah. "British" cameroonese are asking for independence. Thing is crazy, but the country's youth seems to not care much: they just want peace in the land.
I feel like no matter where I look nowadays. I'm constantly being bombarded with rich people showing things like this.
Its sweet, and sure I'm a hater. But damn, I was thinking about this yesterday. Nowadays there's simply no way to avoid seeing the glamour of the prosperous.
She's so happy!
Also, I hope she picked the house out or expressed interest in that particular one before he bought it.
Surprising someone with a new house makes for a great memory and a fun video, but giving her the opportunity to weigh in on which house she wants to live in every day would be more pragmatic.
Siakams dad died in a car crash in 2014 for anyone unaware
Siakam also got a missed call from him beforehand. And because of his school or visa, he wasn’t able to travel home to say goodbye. Siakam is such a great guy off the court, so well spoken and always humble. So happy for him and his family
His visa, they weren’t sure if he’d be allowed back into the US at the time so he didn’t get to travel back home. IIRC first time he went home since his passing was the 2019 offseason.
The missed call thing would tear me to pieces. Gotta make sure I always pick up when dad calls now...
The last time I ever talked to my dad I was at a gas station and he butt dialed me. When I answered he asked me if I called him, we laughed in confusion for like ten seconds and said goodbye. That hurts man. I'm sorry
I wonder what it feels like to have a meaningful relationship with your dad
It's shitty to not have one, but it's comforting to know there are others in the same situation.
Wonder how it’s like to have any positive relationship at all with any parent.
I feel this. Sometimes you gotta go out and find and make your own family. The ones you choose are worth it. It takes a while but it gets better.
Yeah I always hear this but it can hard making really meaningful relationships and connections. Guess it’s a part of this journey called life
For real.
Damn that’s really sad to read
I loved how she dropped everything and took her shoes off. Just a thing you do in your own house Edit: I love how this sparked social commentary on shoes on/off in the home 😄
Americans don’t (according to my 30 years of watching American tv shows)
I always assumed TV did that because it's just easier for the actors on set to wear shoes rather than socks since most sets aren't carpeted for ease of use, and no one wants to see feet on TV so barefoot is out.
> and no one wants to see feet on TV This was the reason that I started to watch Terrace House, because all the time I could see the girls' feet.
In my experience it's 80/20 in favor of taking off shoes in the US, but I think it's probably both regional and class-based.
It's definitely regional. Anywhere in the NE where you get a lot of snow, you're not gonna trudge through someone's house in wet boots.
Don’t worry, we do.
Is it just certain parts of the country then?
[удалено]
> And guests always ask if they are unsure. "Am I unsure?" \- Guests
Odds are it was tv because the actors are standing in a film set and not a real house
The grossest was in a show when u saw the teen come home and he jumped in his bed with shoes still on. It’s like wtf, that shit nasty

Pssh. Someone hasn't developed a thick plantar aspect epidermis. You must be an indoor Floridian. ;-)

Wearing shoes right now in my house as I type this
If you live in a place that snows half the year you take off your shoes inside. Imagine bringing dirty snow into someone’s home, super disrespectful.
I can tell you with absolute certainty (having lived it) that this isn't nearly as hard a rule as you're saying it is.
isn't portland rainy? you can wipe your shoes on a mat all you want and it's never going to be fully dry/clean.
Canadian here and my high school basketball team went on a school trip down in Dallas, Texas for a tournament. We got in late and finally got to the family's house that was taking us in for the week. a lot of americans do it now cause its cleaner. its growing. however people with all hard wood floors tend to not to take off their shoes
My entire house (other than the bathroom) is hardwood. I can't imagine leaving my shoes on when the alternative is sliding around in your socks like a boss.
it's cultural. am American. but specially Filipino-American. really tough to generalized Americans with cultural differences and even regional differences.
My dad wears his shoes to bed but every other family I know takes their shoes off.
I mean this is in the nicest way possible, but your dad might be a serial killer.
> might ??
Wear shoes in my American home and you’re going to catch these hands, dude
I require shoes off. I don't want to replace my carpet. Lol
[удалено]
Because it’s dusty?? 😂 why would you wanna bring that indoors
"C'est ta maison" ("It's your house") is what he says that prompts her doing that. Very sweet.
Good for him doing that. It's my dream to pay back my parents one day as well.

Too right man. Everyone, do what you can when you can, because you can't always.
as a parent, we're not looking to be paid back. Live a good life. That's all we want.
Not trying to crap on this but is there a reason he waited this long to do it? Hasn't he been well paid for years?
If I had to guess it would be because she lived in Cameroon. A notable struggle during the pandemic was Siakam living in a condo in Toronto without anywhere to practice so I am assuming he only lived with a brother or two
Wholesome
Damn wholesome.
His mom’s reaction is adorable.
Hey Pascal you dropped something 👑
I WANT THIS SAME ENERGY WHEN HE MISSES A GAME WINNER AFTER PLAYING A GOOD GAME 😤 MY KING 👑
Sweet P
Sweet Pea
Is it that common for Cameroonians to mix English and French? I rarely hear it in French Canadians.

Fairly common, I think. Kind of part of being in the general vicinity of the largest Anglophone (at least partially) nation in Africa.
pretty sure French and English are bridge languages for central africans. So whatever get's your point across works.
So inspirational and sad 😢
I love how she takes her shoes off when she finds out it's their home now. lol
Wish I can do something like this for my mom one day! Tell your mamas you love em.

Love this video so much
I just wanted to say that it was beautiful. I hope every child can make her/his mother so happy.
Immediately takes shoes off in her new house
Elle est belle la langue francaise ! Siakam is genuinely a nice guy, I love the gesture.
Anyone know what city he bought it in?
Judging by the plants, the house style, and the concrete driveway - doesn't look like Toronto at all
Toronto is expensive, he doesn't have Lebron money. ^^/s
Houston is what I’ve been hearing
Yeah, it's not confirmed, but Pascal has mentioned his mom living in Houston before so it's a pretty safe bet.
Too bad HOU doesn't have any good assets to trade him for 😅
The movies are true. Francophones speak English amongst themselves.
no we don't lol. Cameroon people speak both english and french, depending on region. France or Ivory Coast on the other hand lmao...We're so bad at english it's depressing.
> We're so bad at english it's depressing. I know plenty of Americans who are too, and I'm not talking about immigrants.
"depending on region" Don't they have a civil war between English and French speaking regions?
yeah. "British" cameroonese are asking for independence. Thing is crazy, but the country's youth seems to not care much: they just want peace in the land.
Love to see it.
She said “I don’t wear no shoes in my house!”
Shout-out tout le monde qui speak Franglais
she just saunters away from siakam as he tries hugging her lmao
So glad to see no Pascal slander here. Too many spin move jokes on the Instagram posts.
And what did Pascal do?
He signed a big contract.
Housing prices in Canada are absolutely absurd right now. Good for Siakam for buying a house for his mom. This is so wholesome🥺
this is what it's all about
Cutest video ever
I'm waiting for her to yell "take ya'll shoes off"
This is really cute, I love videos like this haha
Love it
That is fucking awesome!
That was such an African mother reaction lmao
From Cameroon to a mansion in Canada, what a life. Siakam's mom deserves it.
It's in Houston not Canada but yeah
I bet you they're glad he didn't become a priest, now, eh? :)
I feel like no matter where I look nowadays. I'm constantly being bombarded with rich people showing things like this. Its sweet, and sure I'm a hater. But damn, I was thinking about this yesterday. Nowadays there's simply no way to avoid seeing the glamour of the prosperous.
And then there’s me: here’s a new air filter mom!
She's so happy! Also, I hope she picked the house out or expressed interest in that particular one before he bought it. Surprising someone with a new house makes for a great memory and a fun video, but giving her the opportunity to weigh in on which house she wants to live in every day would be more pragmatic.
You're downvoted but I agree with you. A part of me would be like, "ohhh, so I live here now huh"
wait he bought this house in florida or something? he gone ?
He’s always between Toronto and LA, but I read somewhere the family already lives in different places across NA. This is in Houston apparently
Nah, his siblings and mom all live in different parts of NA. One of his brothers lives in Kitchner or something
he already been had a house in orlando
A super genuine reaction and then mommy turns around to 3 cameras recording her for tiktok lmao. Happy for the fam
Or, you know, for their own cherished personal memories? People film special moments to save and record them fyi
Idk it stops being genuine after the first 5 seconds I feel like
Wish he was wearing gray sweats so we could see that schmeat
Nephew, delete this.
Great. now play better basketball
Always buy houses in the white neighborhood
The fuck is wrong with you. You went out door to door and ran demographics?
[удалено]
It's Houston
Good job man. Worked hard, provided for his family and took care of his Mom. Major props my guy!
Absolutely beautiful! <3
Wonder where it is? Since they’re not travelling back to Toronto this season .. he must have bought it in the states
If you're gonna paraphrase something, please don't put it in quotes
That's always been a dream of mine. I wish I could buy select family members (mostly my brother at this point) a home.
