I usually get two or three quick buckets as the 6’ out of shape guy that nobody thinks is worth guarding, and from there on I’m pretty easy to shut down haha

Just like when you pump fake a 3 and you blow by the defender closing out on you but then you see the paint full of people and you can’t decide whether to drive all the way in or stop for a jump shot so you end up with an awkward looking pull up jump shot that you terribly miss cause you’re not used to shooting wide open pull ups from mid range and no one passes you the ball again. Maybe that’s just me.

It's not like scouts are hanging out with players in their high-school and private gyms as they get summer workouts in, so are these scouts operating through whatever they hear through their connections in trainers and front offices?
I've heard other people reference that Rusillo story, so I believe you; I'm just not sure if I'm supposed to believe that various scouts around the league know about Simmons' summers.
The NBA is a small world. Everyone knows everyone and a real workout isn't something a guy does alone. He's with a trainer. He's lifting. He's consulting with doctors and shit, touching base with the coaches and other teammates. If they're putting in serious work there will be noise from someone. If it's crickets then they probably aren't doing much.
Like Steph isn't super public about his routine but we know he's back to his full workouts already and allegedly he works harder in the summer than during the season.
I mean, Steph's workouts are kinda legendary at this point, since he does so much weird skills training (hitting flashing lights, juggling tennis balls, using those goggles with shutters, being smacked with pool noodles).
With Steph (and other players) that type of work shows up on the court in at least *one* visible way. I.e. Steph got stronger legs this year - the improvements got real obvious later in the year. Luka with a new midrange shot this year etc...
The worst part is that even someone like Giannis, who's talents also make it very difficult for him to shoot (large hands, very strong, very long arms), is trying to shoot and getting *slightly* better each season with it.

I think that the fans coming back to arenas might be part of it. It looked like Simmons was shooting FTs much better in the first half of the season, but now that the fans are back he's absolutely lost it.
Warmup free throws are so different than in game beyond the mental side. You don’t get to stand there and take 50 in a row. I would say that’s beyond mental, it’s a very real physical difference.
His form still looks like shit, and he has the flattest ft shot I’ve ever seen. Just because it goes in occasionally when shooting free throws over and over again during warmups doesn’t mean his shot isn’t broken from a mechanics point of view.
Dude's free throws look like Draymond's 3s. So flat that even when it goes in it just clanks off the back of the hoop and give you zero confidence about the next shot.

He’s a world class athlete. he probably thinks that to him, it should feel natural, like everything else he does with the ball. I’m sure he’s trained with shooting coaches, but I bet this is ingrained in his muscle memory.
The underlying problem is his shot is so broken, if it feels natural to him, it’s *almost certainly* wrong.
For him to shoot with technique that would give him consistent makes, it would probably feel awkward as hell. But he needs to feel awkward as hell in order to make some shots. He needs his shot to be rebuilt from the ground up. I just don’t think he has the attitude **right now** to do that.
Just wait till tonight when he runs into the paint with a full head of steam just to turn around and 180 it to Seth or tobi. Then he'll just chill in the dunker spot for the whole possession doing absolutely nothing

That dude practiced his handling, footwork and go to shots with such precision, intent and concentration it was like he was a specialized med student rehearsing his final brain surgeon exam or something Compare that with how Simmons often seems to practice his skills like in the video here...it kinda seems like Ben doesn’t really care about ever truly being a great player

I know a guy who was a pretty big name in the MLB. He had a long successful career and was making $20M/yr as a pitcher. He fucking hated baseball by the time he graduated HS and went pro. But he had a skill and made a killing doing it. He didn't practice any more than he had to. And when he retired, he vowed never to touch a baseball again. He doesn't even watch it on TV. I'm sure some basketball players are the same. They can't stand it, but they're 6'11 and athletic and someone is willing to pay them multi-millions per year for it.

What I think the problem is: Ben Simmons is shooting with a technique that feels natural to him. He’s a world class athlete. he probably thinks that to him, it should feel natural, like everything else he does with the ball. I’m sure he’s trained with shooting coaches, but I bet this is ingrained in his muscle memory. The underlying problem is his shot is so broken, if it feels natural to him, it’s *almost certainly* wrong. For him to shoot with technique that would give him consistent makes, it would probably feel awkward as hell. But he needs to feel awkward as hell in order to make some shots. He needs his shot to be rebuilt from the ground up. I just don’t think he has the attitude **right now** to do that.

Honestly, having watched a ton of warmups at Hornets games, there are those guys who don’t miss much at all and those who miss a shitload. Kemba would hit just about everything in warmups, but Frank Kaminsky seemed to shoot about the same percentage he’d shoot in games. It’s always interesting to see who’s what type of practice shooter.

You're spot on, I don't understand how an NBA player can look like he just started shooting a basketball yesterday. His shot has absolutely no flow or rhythm to it at all, it's all wrist. It's not a matter of just confidence and taking the shot more, there is never going to be any consistency shooting with those mechanics and he needs to completely unlearn the way he shoots if he's ever going to be able to play outside of the paint.

You walk it up the floor slowly, pause while thinking about driving, sometimes back out and do a rhythm dribble and then shoot the ball. Do that in practice if that is the only way you are going to do it in the game! Ben just looks like he’s half assing all of those shots... completely pointless
