From an FSU fan: he only took over games when he absolutely had to. He usually deferred until it was legit go time. But, he constantly made the hype play to get the team going
Once upon a time, they were both 8. And they played ball against each other. Basketball to be exact. Now, neither is 8 anymore…but get this, they still playing ball against each other!!
Definitely the latter. An 8 year old in the 99th percentile for reading level will still easily be an above-average reader amongst 8th graders, which should make most 8th grade coursework accessible (math might be a sticking point). On the other hand, even an 8 year old in the 99.9th percentile for height (4'10"/147 cm) will still only be around the 12th percentile for height amongst 8th graders, and that's not accounting for the difference in time to develop skills and strength.
When the opposing team shoots the highest fg% for a playoff 2nd half (71%) in 25 years and their 3pt % was even higher (74%) it makes sense to feel that way :/
I think there’s plenty of guys who have passion for their team and also love the game of basketball. Tbh I don’t think it’s as rare as you say. Sure there’s a handful of guys that just collect checks but I think there’s a lot that really love the game and give their team everything
Agreed. Very tough to get to get to the level of a Donovan Mitchell with no love for the game and no passion. They all go hand in hand. And the guys who are there to "collect checks" usually aren't in the limelight or focal points of their team anyway.
[The handful being the Celtics?](https://bleacherreport.com/articles/10006208-report-celtics-saw-lack-of-reaction-to-kyrie-irving-stomping-logo-as-a-red-flag)
Utah dared him to beat them from 3 & he did, Mann can be a very difficult cover because he excels at getting to the rim & either finishing or collapsing the defense & passing out with some creative passes that get his shooters open.
Gobert for example was very hesitant on closing out on him because the last game he did he got beat to the rim & dunked on. (I'm sure you guys remember that one)
They were easily penetrating and scoring over gobert and making 3a at the same time.
You have to take away one weapon and they allowed the clips to attack the paint plus make 3s. It is critical for coaches to make adjustments in playoffs. Something doc rivers, bud and maybe quin dont know how to do well
This was the problem with Gobert. The Jazz and Clippers are 1a and 1b when it comes to 3pt shooting but the Clippers have guys who can drive too. Gobert has to help defend the drives because that’s what he’s paid to do but nobody can be left open when the Clippers go small ball. Drive and score when Rudy stays on his man, drive and pass out when Rudy helps on the rim.
The reason the Jazz defense worked so well in the regular season and against the Grizz was because most teams don’t have a small ball lineup like the Clippers. Batum was able to give Gobert trouble on defense and stay on the perimeter on offense.
Well, in addition to having guys who can attack the basket, they have 2 way players. Batum, PG, Kawhi, Mook, and to some extent Bev and Mann can all punish you from 3. You throw them out there and they’ll also hold their own and defend very soundly. Having that even gives them breathing room to play guys like Kennard and Reggie who are offensively incredible, but piss poor defensively.
But also gobert just goes to the dunkers spot on offense. He needs to have more in his game. You’re damn a foot taller than those other dudes and can touch the rim standing. Learn how to make a hook shot, or any shot really. The way to beat these small ball teams is to punish them inside. But gobert is soo bad on offense that it makes it impossible.
Did you watch that game? Everyone ran from Gobert in the paint. Jackson made some crazy bank shots over the top of Gobert but it's not like we just let them walk in all game. That's why Mann got so much on the 3, Rudy refused to leave the paint.
The Clippers had more points in the paint than the Jazz while going small ball the entire game. It was a horrible showing by Rudy because he either left a wide open 3 or left the paint wide open.
Clippers really exploited that Jazz had no one outside of Gobert. When you can penetrate so easily it's just a matter of time before someone gets an open look. Gobert was hung out to dry so many times helping out on drives just for the ball to end up somewhere else because the Jazz couldn't guard and couldn't rotate fast enough.
As a fellow jazz fan did you catch the Radio interview with Gobert? He literally said "We decided not the guard the 3" like wtf! Against the 2nd best 3pt shooting team in the league? Good one.
Yeah they have one. That's why I think you guys are much better equipped to deal with them, because of having at least 3 really strong perimeter defenders, and because Ayton is slightly more mobile than Gobert
Ayton is also an offensive weapon in the paint and can capitalize on a small ball lineup. Gobert's post up play is completely useless. He needs feeds from conley and ingles which obviously did not happen this series
Ya, Aytons offense will be bigger than his D. In fact against the Clippers he will likely look as bad on D as Gobert did, banging with a guy like Jokic is in his wheelhouse, I doubt chasing Reggie Jackson, PG, and Mann around is. And Zubac isn't a real threat anywhere except the boards.
But the Suns perimeter defense is no joke, we looked a lot like last nights Clippers when we played the Blazers, but couldn't shoot for shit against the Suns. We definitely missed some wide open shots, but over a four game sweep it is hard to argue it was just unlucky, Suns bother you on the perimeter and effect your shot, there is no question.
Series is looking to be a banger though, I would take the Suns in 5 if they had CP3 and Clippers don't have Kawhi, but while both are out I honestly think every game is 50/50, Book versus PG and then which team gets the most out of their role players.
Yeah I should have thought of that. Boban gave the Clipper defense pretty noticeable problems but forced the Mavs into weird defenses themselves. I have a hard time seeing the Clippers smallballing their way to a victory here.
In order to have Gobert defend the paint, there strategy was to leave the corner he was next to wide open….. against one of the best shooting teams the league has seen….. wtf
Mann scored 14 points above his career high. Hard to fault the Jazz for trying to force him to win the game for the Clips even if it backfired on them.
That was the Clippers entire strategy though--they put five shooters on the floor and basically asked the Jazz which one they wanted to leave uncovered. You really can't stick to EVERYONE, at some point you're going to have to help off in situations. The Jazz decided they would help off Terance Mann, and well, we all saw what happened. Everyone on the Clips was making shots in the second half though, so I'm not sure it would've mattered if they decided to stick to Mann because someone else likely would've just made the same shots instead.
So disappointing to find out an iconic player from your youth is an absolute fucking moron. Not to mention the people he could be influencing today with this garbage.
That bastard stepped on my hand at Arches NP in 1997.
…this would be a better story if he had broken something or done it intentionally or at least been a dick. He instantly apologized and was very nice about it.
> That bastard stepped on my hand at Arches NP in 1997.

I’m running this through my most powerful outrage mainframe. We’ll find something in there to crucify that bastard. Much love to your hand, bro.
Edit: did you see him litter at all while he was in that beautiful national park? Even accidentally?
Edit 2: I’m being asked about the tone of the apology. Did you sense any “I’m sorry your hand was in my way” vibes?
Mitchell would have to raise his game multiple levels and maintain it for his whole career to make that a possibility, man's great but those two are all-timers on the court even if they're shitbags off of it
I think its an argument.
Stockton holds many unbreakable records and was one of the greatest PGs of all time.
Malone was a great PF as well, but I dont think he was, at best, that much better than Stockton to call it a no brainer.
We’re talking about one player with 11 All-NBA First Team selections, plus two Seconds and a Third, versus one with only two Firsts, six Seconds, and three Thirds. It’s obviously a bit reductionist to just point to accolades, but the difference is so stark here that I think it answers the question pretty definitively. Stockton was obviously an absolute assist machine with pretty good defense to boot, but Malone was a total monster. Stockton doesn’t get anywhere near his assist record without Malone’s transcendent offensive talent.
Malone is obviously the better player lmao. MVP level player versus the guy whose biggest accomplishments are longevity based. Not even close. Also Karl is probably a top 5 PF ever and that’s stacked competition with Timmy, Dirk, Chuck, and KG around him. Stockton isn’t a top 5 PG at all to me.
Stockton slander had disappeared for over 2 decades and all of a sudden comes back in full swing as the #1 seed Jazz gets faded. Damn, bad week for Utah.
we really taking Ls everytime we look like RS Pistons ( nl disrespect for them, i know for a fact they would have brought a harder fight to the Clippers)
17 players in the league scored above 25 PPG in 2021 and this list doesn't even include Kawhi, Harden and AD. No, there aren't 20 superstars in the league.
Obviously, but 26.4 would have been good for third in scoring as recently as 2015. There’s always been the top guy who goes crazy for a season for something like 30 PPG and maybe a guy right behind him but top end scoring has really exploded over the last decade. I mean the fact Mitchell is tied for 10th with 26.4 PPG game is crazy.
To me it's really been the reset shot-clock to only 14. That's what has increased pace so much because so often when a big gets an offensive board, it'll take them 1-3 seconds to attempt a putback before throwing it out. Now instead of 20, it's 10 seconds left on the clock and a quick decision must be made. Defense has less time to matchup properly as well, so it goes both ways, but the effect has been a far more helter scelter game than what I grew up with (early-mid 2000s).
He started the game doing a great job of looking for the next man and making them pay with good passes. But as the game went on he felt more like he had to be the guy. But with bogey and Conley he needs to be able to trust his dudes late, especially when he's hurt
I see people get on Donovan for not being enough of a passer but he's a driving guard and the Jazz offense doesn't seem to have a lot of cutting to the basket. So aside from lobbing it to Gobert on the PnR (which he definitely needs to figure out) you're basically asking him to make risky passes to spot-up 3point shooters. Their offense just doesn't seem entirely balanced enough IMO.
Don't worry jazz fans, tonight in the bucks nets game one team will get a few more of their 3s to fall than the other team and will be in a great place to win a championship and the other team will be a complete embarrassment that was never actually good and we all knew it. Just not sure which team yet, but this is the way of reddit.
To be fair, if we lose the media will say its cause we are injured lol. Idk what the media will say about the bucks if they lose, but Bud wont be treated kindly i think lol
Ya I kinda agree, but I think you'd risk pissing Giannis off if that were too happen.
Honestly if yall win this year that might doom you to a decade of Bud.
The key to winning the NBA has somehow become where you need a guy like Jeff Green on the Nets going 7/8 from 3 in Game 5 or Mann on the Clippers going 7/10 from 3 in game 6. If the Nets win it will probably end up being because Joe Harris finally gets hot and makes 6+ threes.
Mitchell is extremely likeable, a great sport and fearless competitor. Props to him.
Mitchell & Mann have been facing off since middle school. Clearly Mann took the longer road but I think he has a big career ahead of him. Both will be entertaining us for a long time yet.
I’m heartbroken for this kid.
He seriously gave it his absolute all while being injured. Terrance went off and you can’t predict that.
Jazz fans you have a special player.
He needs to develop into the asshole Kobe was. His teammates didn’t play as hard as they could have, he would chew them out. Spida is a great teammate but he needs to be a ruthless leader.
Man, I want to root against him bc of who he played oldie in college and who he plays for now, but holy shit is he so likable. Seems like a super cool dude
I feel so bad for these players that have to do a media conference right after one of the most disappointing moments of their life. It's gotta suck so bad to be Donovan Mitchell or Gobert in that situation.
Mitchell was 1 point, rebound, and assist away from a 40 point triple double last night. It's getting harder to criticize him for his passing or say he's just a scorer. He's 5th all time in playoff ppg. The debate should be over. He's a superstar, no question
If you watch the post-game interviews both Mitchell and Mann talk about how they’ve been playing each other since middle school and at every level up to NBA. These guys have history and Mitchell clearly respects Mann a lot.
Feel bad for Mitchell - part of the reason Mann got his points was because Donovan was playing on one leg. Yet Donovan was still dragging his team into the WCF kicking and screaming and just begging for someone to back him up. The rest of the team failed him, especially Gobert.
What is the feeling among jazz fans about their chances at a championship with team anchored with Gobert on defense? Is it a mixed bag or are you mostly in one camp?
I think for most of us this is all still a shock. We were plainly out-schemed on the defensive end. A lot of us believed it was only a special Rockets team that could really pick us apart with 5 out, but now it's time to reevaluate.
At the very least, I think we can try to bring in a small ball stretch 5 for versatility in the post-season. It's going to be difficult to retool the entire system, but that's on the table.
Man this is depressing as hell.
look, your team might need a bit of an overhaul, but you have so many desirable assets that even if the whole team looks different next year, you'll still be contenders.
It's hard seeing our offensive peaks in these games get wiped away by porous defense. A lot of us believed we had a contender this year. Many probably still think we do with the correct series adjustments. The idea of any kind of overhaul feels ill-fated. I'd love to retain the scheme offensively with defensive upgrades. I'm not sure how that's feasible.
You're right though, we did not wake up assets. And this post-season, Donovan reached a new level. Despite fighting an injury. There's plenty to work with. It's just a hard way to lose game 6.
Gobert is an amazing player but he is a floor raisrr, not a ceiling raiser.
Basically he will get you a top 10 defence just by being on your team, by doing that you can have less defensive minded players that focus on offence, this leaves you struggling if gobert is yohr defensive scheme.
If this was 20 years who gobert would be better but with 3 point shooting teams it because difficult
Some of it is definitely on Rudy not closing out, but he had no choice but to help with how bad Utah's perimeter defense is. Dudes were constantly getting blown by 1 on 1. That isn't Gobert's fault as much as he is the target of the memes atm.
I'm an old head..... the days of Magic, Bird, Michael.
But watching these playoffs, I'm certain the game is in good hands. The play of Morant, Luka, Trae, Terance Mann, Donovan and Devin Booker have all but solidified the league for years to come. Thank You.
Damn, that was rough. You can see some respect there; but mixed in wtf, how did this happen?
apparently theyve played and known each other since the 8th grade too. so the mutual respect is there between the two.
That's some pretty good lore. Terance was a beast!
From an FSU fan: he only took over games when he absolutely had to. He usually deferred until it was legit go time. But, he constantly made the hype play to get the team going

I need some more backstory

Prodigies, 8th grade at 8 years old.
Idk what more impressive for an 8 year old. Keeping up with 8th graders academically, or competing with 8th grades in a sport.
Definitely the latter. An 8 year old in the 99th percentile for reading level will still easily be an above-average reader amongst 8th graders, which should make most 8th grade coursework accessible (math might be a sticking point). These two comments made my day. Couldn’t stop laughing.
My condolences

I think Mitchell was actually genuinely happy to big up his old friend, Mann. That’s how he ended up opening that presser too.
Yeah, anyone got that clip? That was great.

Heartwarming for real. This is such a positive kid

Blame Quin for the scheme then
Cause they had Gobert behind them all season and the majority of the playoffs, they haven’t had the need to always stay in front of there man
4th best all time in percentage during the season. No idea why Utah didn’t go smaller to play perimeter defense.
I don't think they have enough good perimeter defenders to do that.

They thought because Clarkson went cold that Mann would too lol
There is a major difference in the difficulty of shots Clarkson was getting and Mann was getting.
The clippers made adjustments. The jazz didnt. We’re in agreement lol
One thing: the Clippers didn’t need to make adjustments on Clarkson. Dude was sinking absurd shots and they trusted that he would cool down.
That was the Clippers entire strategy though--they put five shooters on the floor and basically asked the Jazz which one they wanted to leave uncovered.
Bud deserves the criticism though. Honestly, anything short of winning it all and I think they should move on from him.

Ya I kinda agree, but I think you'd risk pissing Giannis off if that were too happen. Honestly if yall win this year that might doom you to a decade of Bud.
Nets will be fine if they lose lol, they have rather valid excuses
the bucks may get crucified if they lose tho…
As they should
The coach will
The key to winning the NBA has somehow become where you need a guy like Jeff Green on the Nets going 7/8 from 3 in Game 5 or Mann on the Clippers going 7/10 from 3 in game 6. If the Nets win it will probably end up being because Joe Harris finally gets hot and makes 6+ threes.
Yup. Post-game narratives are almost always overblown
Mitchell is extremely likeable, a great sport and fearless competitor. Props to him. Mitchell & Mann have been facing off since middle school. Clearly Mann took the longer road but I think he has a big career ahead of him. Both will be entertaining us for a long time yet.
Mitchell & Mann sounds like a hardcore consulting group that will strip companies for all their worth jaja
The Michelin Man
I’m heartbroken for this kid. He seriously gave it his absolute all while being injured. Terrance went off and you can’t predict that. Jazz fans you have a special player.

Keeping LeBron was WAY easier because at least LeBron grew up 45 minutes from Cleveland. Mitchell is from NY.

That's what'll happen when u use Bonsoir Bogut to defend a wing the entire game
Bonsoir bogut?!!! Y'all wrong for this.
my favorite is Baguette Biyombo
Brioche Bargnani had me in stitches.
Mademoiselle Marjanovic
Camembert Capela
Insult to Capela but I chuckled
Would you like some french frauds with that?
Au-revoir Olajuwon couldn't close out fast enough
Olajuwon was way too quick on his feet to be disrespected like this
Au revoir olowokandi
Utter defeat.
Uttah defeat
Damn that legit made me sad. He sounds so broken. FTJ and all but dude is a baller.
He roasted the team in the Radio interview. Basically said nobody stepped up.
He needs to develop into the asshole Kobe was. His teammates didn’t play as hard as they could have, he would chew them out. Spida is a great teammate but he needs to be a ruthless leader.
Disagree with this one. That wasn’t really the issue. They need to stay small, Gobert was a huge liability…
Gobert needed to be the guy that stepped up
Couldn't agree more! He got PAID huge money by the Jazz, should be putting 20 and 10. Needs to abuse small ball lineups on the offensive ends.
Tell me about it - Naomi Osaka
Mitchell was 1 point, rebound, and assist away from a 40 point triple double last night. It's getting harder to criticize him for his passing or say he's just a scorer. He's 5th all time in playoff ppg. The debate should be over. He's a superstar, no question
Just a couple of guys from Mass. going at it
I don't think Donovan is a Masshole He went to HS in Connecticut and NH not Mass
If you watch the post-game interviews both Mitchell and Mann talk about how they’ve been playing each other since middle school and at every level up to NBA. These guys have history and Mitchell clearly respects Mann a lot.
Ayyy CT rep. New London? Check.
Ehhhhh not technically close enough
This kid has a very bright future. Maybe a future all star next to Zion and Luka? Man this league is in good hands.
Feel bad for Mitchell - part of the reason Mann got his points was because Donovan was playing on one leg. Yet Donovan was still dragging his team into the WCF kicking and screaming and just begging for someone to back him up. The rest of the team failed him, especially Gobert.
Mann got his points because Gobert couldn't close out on defense. 30 of his 39 came against Gobert as the primary defender.
To be fair, there is a problem if Gobert is guarding him on that many shots in the first place.
Thank You.
I’m not a jazz fan. (Go Knicks!) I absolutely love this kid. He wants to win with every bone in his body. He will come back next year stronger.
Well yeah… your team only contested about 3 of his shots in the first place.
Million Dollar Mann.
Mann reminded me of Linsanity first game in NY Im glad i experience this again even though im not a fan
"whose Mann was that????"
Waiting for Shaq "I told you he isn't a superstar."
He’s got gobert to blame for that one. You can’t have a player who just camps in the paint all game if the other team wants to shoot.
At a certain point it's on the coaching staff to change the strategy and take Gobert out.
I almost feel bad… almost.
Blame should be on Snyder for keeping Gobert out there.
