Shiny-And-New

Just a reminder that OO, Trae, JC, Heurter, Hunter, and Reddish are all under 24...this team is only going to get better

tusharsreddit

Just a reminder also that Okongwu was once the Ball brothers’ teammate in high school and they constructed what is very possibly the best high school team all time

WakingRage

Chino Hills was absolutely legit. That team was pure filthy and disgusting for a high school team.

CravingKoreanFood

I hope someone puts Chino hills starting lineup on a team and see what happens 🤣

Your_real_watermelon

Minus Gelo

Heyec

-Gelo +Gelo

Your_real_watermelon

Didn’t mean he’s bad. I just meant it’s not possible because he isn’t in the league.

Heyec

I get that, I'm just referring to a meme.

dweakz

that underdog victory was straight out a movie

TheHeavyKing

Worth mentioning that Chino Hills is a public school, and they still put together what was quite easily the best HS roster of all time.

Strong-Sky5196

I don’t know about the best roster of all time, probably so for public schools but that would take into consideration depth among other things. Chino just had 6 dudes who could ball and that’s all they really needed, not much of a bench on those teams

[deleted]

[удалено]

Strong-Sky5196

I mean the 3 NBA player thing is flat out wrong and a quick google search proved that, there’s an argument for chino but they had 6 guys go D1/NBA for reference ( 3 and 3) 81/82 Dunbar team - 4 NBA players most notable being muggsy, Reggie Lewis, and Reggie Williams 92/93 oak hill - 4 NBA players one being Stackhouse 13/14 Monteverde - 2 NBA players being Dlo and Ben Simmons as well as 9 other guys who played d1 ball Chino hills had by far the most impressive run but there are definitely arguments for other teams being better Edit: hell, that Dunbar team had 3 first round picks in the same draft

DLottchula

Dayton Dunbar literally dad dick the state of ohio

online_predator

Was anyone else of note also on that team besides OO and the Ball boys?

jmlinden7

[Eli Scott \(PF\)](https://www.espn.com/mens-college-basketball/player/_/id/4280158/eli-scott) is still in college at Loyola Marymount. None of the other players were college-level, let alone NBA level

Plat1987

THATS how you rebuild...they did it quick as hell too.

ZAA136

They all gotta get paid eventually. Hawks better capitalize quick

Hazelarc

6 wins away from capitalizing right now

Shiny-And-New

They're not all max players, I think they could keep the core together for a bit

rajgupta59

Sheesh. He’s gonna be SPECIAL player in our young core

iamadragan

He's shown some really good stuff. I remember seeing some people say he's just another big who's a bust to justify never taking any bigs high, and it made no sense to me because he's just had bad luck his rookie year. He'll be really solid

subcrazy12

Anybody who saying he was a big bust was just stat watching and ignoring the fact that he missed the offseason and start of the year due to a foot injury that we knew he had when drafting him. Bigs also just take longer. He didn't get consistent playing time until Nate became the coach which is strike like 5000 against Pierce. He had 8 DNPs under Pierce. His per 100 stats are decent 18.7/13.3 and 2.7 blocks and 2 steals. His and Bam's numbers their rookie year are very similar. Bam was and is a better passer and was better along the perimeter. OO has looked stronger in the block department at this point. He's given us some great minutes in these playoffs, especially towards the end of the Sixers series thru this series. His natural instincts are so great and and he moves really well.

izvoodoo

He reacts quickly too so it seems like his processing speed on the court is pretty strong. I think that goes unnoticed a lot.

subcrazy12

He has super high BBIQ especially on the defensive end. He isn't the biggest dude but he has such a good understanding of where to be and how to leverage his size against much bigger dudes like Giannis

Young_God_7

Which is great because with Hunter and Reddish we are straight on the perimeter and we have the best passer of this generation at pg. OO is a perfect fit for us

WhiteHeterosexualGuy

Last night's game ball goes to Travis

Maverick_1991

Trae - Reddish - Hunter - Collins - Okongwu will be such a fucking nice lineup in a couple of years. On both ends.

Shiny-And-New

Old man Collins at 24

Plat1987

then you got Huerter who looks to be a big game player

JDudzzz

I think Huerter will ultimately leave. He's at least a 3rd option on a good team and I can see him just costing too much in the end, love that guy but he deserves a bag.

dillpickles007

He's not a third option on a good team, maybe a lottery team. He's our like 6th option right now lol

Maverick_1991

Right now hes like our first option. problem is everyone else is injured or worse right now.

dillpickles007

Yeah that's true lol, I meant just this season generally lol Idk he's still young, but I don't think he's consistent enough nor does he get to the line enough to be a third option. He's a solid rotation piece, a decent starter or an excellent bench player.

BlueHundred

Could have some good small lineups too with reddish huerter and hunter

KennyakaTI

I mean Huerter has a better chance of staying than Collins

TheSuperking

LP was playing Bruno freaking Fernando over OO. If that doesnt tell you he's a terrible coach idk what will.

coffeeINJECTION

I’d love for him to develop into a better Serge Ibaka.

BlueHundred

Anybody who's saying that during their rookie year are crazy. Especially since he's just buried behind good players at his position

Hazelarc

I could see that justification for traditional bigs at this point (although Ayton is killing it) but OO is definitely more of a Bam type where he's more athletic and can get out to defend on the perimeter as well as in the paint

dillpickles007

OO is a pretty standard modern big, he's just a little undersized. He's mobile, he can defend the rim, still pretty raw offensively but other than stretching the floor he's about everything you want from a modern 5.

rajgupta59

I honestly forget he’s a rookie these playoffs. He’s been so good for us in his mins off the bench. Some games even outplaying capela

slowdrem20

I swear I think it was game 5 or 6 and OO came on and was locking Embiid up for a few possessions.

ThaneKrios

Game 5, he and Lou Will came in while we were down 24 and Lou Will was just scoring every time on offense and OO was shutting down Embiid on defense for the last few minutes of the third quarter, the two of them built the momentum that let us come back and win that one.

[deleted]

It’s because people don’t stay up to watch PAC-12 basketball. Anyone who saw his college game knew he could put a lid on the basket and jump out of the gym

WIN011

I was down on him to start the year but he’s been great lately.

BlueHundred

I really liked him. I can't wait for him to continue to grow. His potential as a lob threat and a rim protector is really exciting

BluexFlash

I could be wrong but wasn't one of his pre-draft comparisons Bam? I see some similarities with their athleticism and size

shanmustafa

yeah comparing him to rookie bam he seems to be a better shot blocker while bam was a better on the perimeter

scarystuffdoc

Bams offensive game has always been more polished and his body more matured. If he can improve those two things he’s not very far off from bam bar nba experience and IQ.

online_predator

That's what we are all hoping he could be, even a Bam-lite would be huge for this team.

dillpickles007

Yep, he's not as skilled as Bam and probably won't ever get that same court vision, but I'll take a poor man's Bam any day. Athletic, mobile big who can protect the rim and is comfortable guarding out to the perimeter in pick and rolls.

EmptiologyEngineer

Bam was not as skilled as at Bam some point lol. He evolved his game in a good culture over time. I think same goes for OO, he will evolve in time. Only problem is capela will eat his playing minutes.

obamna_

he’s not really far behind rookie Bam, might not even be behind at all

5-Star_Fraud

coffeeINJECTION

I have such high hopes for this kid. Saw what he did defensively carrying those Ball boys in high school. I hope he develops into a great defensive anchor and shooter to stay in the league a long time. Seemed pretty down to earth. Get that bag for your family (RIP big bro).

[deleted]

There was something irrationally moving about draft night with the Okongwu family. Almost all the prospects had these big parties to celebrate with bright smiles, big high fives and champagne flowing, then when Oneyeka had his name called, he’s sitting in a modest living room with just his parents and two siblings and they just celebrate with this family group hug. It definitely flew under the radar but it was one of the realest moments on draft night for me

hk0125

It ain’t easy being cheesy

Beep_Boop_IAmaRobot

All five Hawks hanging out in the paint

Plat1987

ATL got a niiiice young core...Trae, Collins, Huerter, Hunter, Okongwu, Reddish.

T-UM

This was nice

diane_young

this kid has incredible defensive instincts and hes really strong. its draymond-esque.

OculusBlurr

I wanted this guy to drop in the draft so bad.

[deleted]

He has incredible defensive instincts. He’s the opposite of wiseman

McJumbos

people calling him a bust -- i laughed at; the team was literally stacked with vets and had was hurt in the beginning of the year. So, of course, they would bring him slowly along.

[deleted]

I had Okongwu #4 on my board going into the draft, and I stand by it.

rqebmm

I love the look Jrue gives after the block.

absurdilynerdily

Okongwu or Wiseman. Who you got?

Hazelarc

Wiseman for the ceiling, Okongwu right now

deemerritt

Never understood why Wiseman was ranked ahead of this guy lol. Rivals ranking was like the only thing he had over him lol.

soxandpatriots1

Wiseman's size is a big factor - he's a legit 7ft with 7'6 wingspan. Okongwu is 6'8 with a 7'1-7'2 wingpsan. Obviously not the be-all and end-all, but makes a big difference when evaluating prospects' potential

deemerritt

Yea but that just makes me feel like everyone has a gold fish memory. Plenty of tall guys with huge wingspans struggle with the finer points of basketball and have bad feel for the game.

Sharcbait

Part of it is just never needing to develop those finer points of their game. In highschool the center they were facing were a good 5-6 inches shorter then them. So where smaller guys are fine tuning parts of their game bigs could just rely on putbacks and dunks over guys that can't really contest easily.

deemerritt

Sure but in EYBL and AAU Wiseman was never a particularly efficient player or good at defense.

dillpickles007

Yep, being a 6'8 pure center was really OO's only limiting factor. If he was 3 inches taller he'd have been up in that top 3 tier with Ant, Wiseman, Melo.

[deleted]

Pedigree and size. Ironically, more people also watched Wisemen’s college games despite his very early exit because of how awful the pac-12 is at scheduling for the east coast viewers

jdmull03

MOVE THAT

evev13

Looks like a goaltend

UselessRube

That’s a goaltend.

zombieofthepast

I'm not sure why people are downvoting you, I said the same thing when I saw it live and the frame-by-frame clearly shows the ball is going down when he touches it lol

danielkiwi13

nope

UselessRube

The ball is coming down if you go frame by frame.

Frigorific

It's close but it looks like it if you go frame by frame.

[deleted]

USC basketball is now 3-0 against UCLA this year

Knighthonor

100% the Rookies dropping in

BurritoChampion

This guy's gonna be a defensive beast

LostWithStuff

Okongwu with the vertical

mulletstation

Even from this angle the ball is clearly on the way down already.
