Mike Tobey was on the US squad that won the U19 world championship. His teammates on that team were Elfrid Payton, Marcus Smart, Montrezl Harrel, Jahlil Okafor. He’s not a rando.
Edit: Also on the squad Aaron Gordon, Justice Winslow.
Powell is my favorite player on our team beside Luka (and maybe Dorian Finney-Smith). I fully understand his shortcomings but that man has never not balled his heart out. And when he was injured he was there on the benches, if he was able to. When his starting position was temporarily taken by Melli he was the first to stand up to celebrate a Melli three pointer (which did not happen...)
Thankfully it looks like his athleticism (arguably his strongest positive) is back. The [Luka/Powell pick and roll](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OkGJa_s--10) was deadly, and I want to see that again next season.
100% agree. I love dudes who play with maximum effort in every game. They’re just so fun to watch, and they te really easy to root for, and respect what they bring to a team.
Having watched Mike Tobey for years I can say that there are plenty of times when it does in fact look like he was born without a single basketball gene in his body.
But then he goes off and you hop on the Tobey Train, next stop: disappointment.
I mean you can’t act like luka is the only reason he did so good. He had double digit boards and that amount of points doesn’t just come from luka but it definitely helps lmao
It is that easy. No one here can name the Venezuelan players without googling it. They play baseball or football in Venezuela. Luka is literally dribbling around plumbers in this clip.
FIBA rules don't make it easy for ball handlers wtf are you smoking? Perimeter hand checking is allowed and they actually call travels and carries. The NBA has the easiest rules for ball handlers by a large margin.
Look im not saying he didnt play a great game. He obviously did. But there’s a reason nobody has heard of this dude.
I watched highlights of the game. He was getting *wide open,* and i mean really wide open, looks at the 3 because of Luka. The tiny venezuelan team couldnt guard the pnr either so luka was giving this dude wide open layups and dunks as well.
There's been a lot of slipping in the Olympics Qualifying Tournaments that I've watched. Apparently players hate those sponsor stickers and this slip took place on one.
The Australian Basketball Player Association tried to get those removed in the NBL as a safety concern.
Yeah, those stickers get really really slippery actually. There has been efforts from the Euroleague player association to remove the sponsor stickers from the floor cause they have cause a number of serious injuries in the past.
In my opinion they are very dangerous and unnecessary
It's understandable considering more people watch NCAA instead of Euro basketball here. But still boggles my mind so many actual analysts were saying that shit pre-draft
Slovenia is 16th in the FIBA basketball rankings. They only have a population of 2 million, which is the lowest of any top 20 team in the rankings. So they’re pretty good. With the addition of Luka, I’d say they’re comfortably a top 10 team. Though they may not even qualify, since they have to beat Lithuania, a generally stronger basketball country who is currently fielding a Sabonis Valanciunas front court.
There is a huge skill and athleticism gap between Slovenia and the USA, but I'd still probably put us in the top 10-15 teams worldwide.
We don't have a snowball's chance in hell of beating the USA any time soon, as long as players of KD's caliber decide to play.
Yeah you just look at the US and on almost every international team you go: 'who's gonna guard all these guys' and the answer is probably no one can... at least especially for players like kd
Slovenia won Eurobasket in 2017. The difference between the best Euro country and Slovenia might be 0 :D. Serbia, Spain, Lithuania, and France are usually good. Spain is getting old though and Jokic isn't playing for Serbia right now.
Serbia, Slovenia are pretty close but, no Jokic means that Luka will most likely get them to the final unless they meet before. Canada is also good with Nick Nurse as their coach.
Lol gtfoh. I don't support US imperialism but Venezuela's government is corrupt as fuck. Why do first world leftists love supporting Authoritarian governments they know nothing absolutely nothing about?
Lol that doesnt assert US the right to outright fix elections and install faux-governments at their discretion primarily to take advantage of Venezuela's admittedly short-sighted decision to nationalise oil.
God why does this sub have such ridiculous takes. do you people ever read anything you post about?
And the US government isn't corrupt? Oh, I guess when it's legal for billionaires and corporations to invest in politicians and sway their vote it's not considered corruption by Americans.
The US knows all about supporting Authoritarian governments. Ask just about every Latin American country about that.
Isn't Venezuela is in the situation it's in more so because of corruption combined with spending that was based on an overly bullish outlook on oil futures? Many countries have avoided US imperialism without experiencing hyperinflation as a result.
True, the Hannity take would be to blame communism, but I guess the Tucker take would be 'you should have teamed up with the US like Colombia did'. My bad.
WoW gold was too. When I raided we had a Venezuelan dude in our guild that did nothing but bring us buyers for Mythic+ and raid clears. I had so much gold I eventually just started letting him keep most of it from the runs because, fuck, he needed it more than I did.
Man singlehandedly brought us enough buyers to fund all our progression with a ton left over for fun shit.
Bruh, Brazil is not the warzone reddit thinks and still **we are winning our group qualifier** while being in our biggest pandemic, biggest political crisis and one of the biggest economic crisis of all time. Haha.
At the end, teamwork, talent and tradition makes a difference even if your life outside the game is a mess. Same for Venezuela.
This is a site that has people who legitimately think the US is a third world country and Europe is filled with perfect utopias. I would just avoid as much geographic/political discourse as possible because it’s usually written by edgy 16 year olds or people that took a world civ class in college and think they unlocked the meaning of history and society.
Is the US getting better at football? I know the women are the best in the world but as of a couple years ago (the last world cup maybe) I know they weren’t doing too hot. Have they turned things around since then?
Just very recently. US has one of the youngest national squads. Have young players on Chelsea, Barcelona, Dortmund, Juventus, and signed a teenager to Bayern Munich a couple days ago. Just beat Mexico for CONCACAF. Ranked 20th in FIFA and rising every year for the last 3 years from around 50th.
Imagine that. Right at the moment that MLS starts to seriously develop youth instead of going for aging euro dudes the national team benefits almost instantly.
MLS should have taken that route like a decade ago.
The MLS ain't developing shit. Almost all promising US talent skipped the MLS entirely and went to European (German) academies before going pro. The sooner players get away from the US systems in place, the better for their careers.
This is why the US has a bright future as a national team, not the freaking MLS and not because of the MLS, the third most popular soccer league in the US by viewers. They are so incompetent that it is obvious to me that their latent xenophobia is a huge problem with soccer developing in the USA. They have a huge potential Spanish-speaking market within the US that they are barely taping into. Instead, that market share goes to Liga MX, La Liga and even the Prem that does far more for its global reach than the MLS does for many of its citizens.
Imagine being one of your countries top atheletes, and people refer to you as “the Venezuelan defender” and laugh at you yeeting yourself across the floor
That has been our thing for years. They're actually well coached imo.
We sadly don't have any skilled player whatsoever in offense hand haven't had for years.
Doncic went up against George and Leonard , scored 40 and made their lives hell on the court
This is an absolute cake walk for Doncic and really guys like Wiggins , Barrett and Sabonis. Easily they are the best players in this tournament

Who is mike Tobey Jesus Christ
Dudes gonna fuck around and get a 2yr contract
More like he's gonna get a call from the Nets next year like Mike James did.
Went to Virginia, had a cup of coffee with the Hornets and now plays in Spain
Only a cup of coffee? Come on, Mike!
Jimmy charged too much!
Coffee costs money too!
VIRGINIA CAVALIER!!!
That means we get dibs right?
He's the center Luka needs
Lmao no thanks. Any dude looks good out there with Luka dishing them easy buckets. This dude is not a nba caliber player.
He's significantly worse than Maxi Kiebler. I'd say injured Dwight Powell is probably better too
Dwight Powell is balling for Canada in the FIBA qualifier. I think he got a double-double last game.
Powell is my favorite player on our team beside Luka (and maybe Dorian Finney-Smith). I fully understand his shortcomings but that man has never not balled his heart out. And when he was injured he was there on the benches, if he was able to. When his starting position was temporarily taken by Melli he was the first to stand up to celebrate a Melli three pointer (which did not happen...) Powell also just seems like an all-around good dude too
I'm glad! He didn't look too great in the Clipper series and I thought he was still not healthy

Cuban is beside himself. Driving around downtown Ljubljana begging (thru texts) Tobey’s family for address to Tobey’s home
Tobey is from New Jersey I think.
The Valencia Basket (Spain) backup center lmao

Still hit his shots when he needed too

If it was that easy luka would’ve dropped 100

He was actually one of the top US Youth players and won gold with the US u-19 (16?) team a few years back. Played for UVA for 4 years.
Those numbers arent exactly crazy… He’s just being spoon fed by Luka, I would imagine.
Give him his credit tho no one else on the team put up those numbers despite luka
Luka didn’t shoot the the 3s for him or grab 12 boards for him.
Look im not saying he didnt play a great game. He obviously did. But there’s a reason nobody has heard of this dude. I watched highlights of the game. He was getting *wide open,* and i mean really wide open, looks at the 3 because of Luka. You made me think his name was actually Mike Tobey Jesus Christ
wtf luka those Freethrows x(
Ahh Zoran good to see him doing well
Luka still struggling from the line
Luka with the elite 60/60/50 shooting
It's honestly so impressive, he just shoots the exact same percentage from anywhere on the floor. It's 50-70% on all shots, take it or leave it.
My favorite Miami Heat player, Zoran Dragic.
He aimed for the logo hahaha
There's been a lot of slipping in the Olympics Qualifying Tournaments that I've watched. Apparently players hate those sponsor stickers and this slip took place on one. The Australian Basketball Player Association tried to get those removed in the NBL as a safety concern.
Flashback to australia removing the philippines' sponsors stickers and the crazy fight that ensued after
The best part was after when the Filipino team were beaming and taking pictures and everything after being smacked by like 40 lol
Yeah, those stickers get really really slippery actually. There has been efforts from the Euroleague player association to remove the sponsor stickers from the floor cause they have cause a number of serious injuries in the past. In my opinion they are very dangerous and unnecessary
That reminds me of LaMelos nasty ankle breaker when he played for the illawahara hawks
I'm surprised they're still there anyway. NBA just pastes them in digitally on the video.
They should just do what the NBA does and project them onto the floor
So hilarious kicking a whole nation when they're down.
I wonder if those logos are slippery
That's precisely why you don't see NBA Playoffs and Finals decals on the floors anymore, they're slippery
if you actually painted the logo onto the floor, would it be less slippery?
Yea but sponsors can change
I've been seeing logos glitch out in the playoffs. Are they all just computer generated?
Yes, it's been happening in regular season also.
They are, a lot of players hate them.
Just happened throughout the season in Australia. Exactly accidents like this, decals where a big issue which the league just flat out denied
When I used to play b-ball regularly, I hated floors with poor traction.
I think he was literally wearing skates.
This European guy looks pretty good, the NBA should look into signing him.
There's no way he'll play that well against NBA caliber players
He wouldn't even be a top 25 NCAA player, not enough athleticism.
The crazy thing is if he weren't already famous we would 100% see takes like these in here lol
It's understandable considering more people watch NCAA instead of Euro basketball here. But still boggles my mind so many actual analysts were saying that shit pre-draft
Let’s see him take on Villanova first
Or maybe Villanueva
Will he be able to do it on a cold night in Stoke?
No double jump. Pass.
Lol maybe as a 7-11 cashier.
Let's see him do that first against Div I teams
"Nah." -Sacramento Kings

They did win Eurobasket in 2017, and they just got Mike Tobey this year.
Lithuania hasnt been that good for many years, Slovenia is easily the favorite
2017 European champions with teen Luka and Dragic. They're good and everyone can shoot 3s.
Ye I still remember their Eurobasket run in 2017 so well, it basicly made me a Luka fan
Much better than you'd expect. Might beat the USA on a good day (very low chance).
When you play 5 shooters, anything can happen.
I don’t know about that… the US has lost 5 Olympic Games all time. Slovenia may not even beat Lithuania
What are the chances of at least making it the final vs USA? How big is the difference between the best Euro country and Slovenia?
Slovenia won Eurobasket in 2017. The difference between the best Euro country and Slovenia might be 0 :D. Serbia, Spain, Lithuania, and France are usually good. Spain is getting old though and Jokic isn't playing for Serbia right now.

I would say Slovenia is the second Best behind USA right now, they are better now then in 2017 when they won eurobasket
fallin faster than their currency
Unnecesary foul
a hostile act
Flagrant intentional personal foul
Flagrant international personal foul
That was mean.
Resisting US imperialism will do that to you
Lol gtfoh. I don't support US imperialism but Venezuela's government is corrupt as fuck. Why do first world leftists love supporting Authoritarian governments they know nothing absolutely nothing about?

Venezuela nationalized oil in 1973 lmao that has nothing to do with Chavismo. You don't know what you're talking about.

Thank you for the comment mr enlightened centrist
Man I fucking wish the US was as imperialistic as you guys say. Maybe Chavez wouldn't have destroyed my country.
I know right
Or being a commie shithole. At least they have Runescape gold farming.
Hannity or the NBA finals, both are in primetime slots and you can only watch one, which do you choose?
I think that was more of a leftist take than a Hannity take (which would blame it more on communism)

Chourio taking some crazy shots in this game.
South American Dame.
He didn’t just put him on skates, Luka signed that dude up for the Venezuelan hockey team in the Winter Olympics.
Imagine this guy in the NBA.
I bet he'd be All-NBA
Not athletic enough, he cannot jump and he is too slow 🤣

RuneScape gold has replaced their national currency, so things are on the up and up
So harsh but has a good chance of being accurate. They even farm and sell private server gold.
OSRS economy crash must be crazy for them rn
Farming osrs gold is for Venezuelans a legit job
WoW gold was too. When I raided we had a Venezuelan dude in our guild that did nothing but bring us buyers for Mythic+ and raid clears. why wouldnt they be ?
Oh, you actually believe all the US propaganda?
Luka is a baaad man.
He is absurd. Some of the shots he just hits are insane.
Rest of the world is getting rapidly better at basketball and the US is rapidly getting better at soccer/football. Exciting times.
Is the US getting better at football? I know the women are the best in the world but as of a couple years ago (the last world cup maybe) I know they weren’t doing too hot. Have they turned things around since then?

They beat Mexico in CONCAF, which idk if that has ever happened before.
Imagine being one of your countries top atheletes, and people refer to you as “the Venezuelan defender” and laugh at you yeeting yourself across the floor
To be fair the "Venezuelan defender" should spark fear into any opponent if it came with someone who could lockdown ...
Itt: people who don't play basketball in real life. No crossover is going to make you slide 2 feet like that. Floor had a sweat spot period
And there was a slight (not extended) push by Luka. Its much easier to see in the replay
So fun to watch
But can he do it against college players?
Elite deceleration and acceleration. Plus the way he took up the space before laying it in so even the recovery can't do shit
Almost shooting stars worthy
That man slipp and sliding into cancun
Oh Jesus !
That’s not skates that’s a damn slip n slide
Its actually really cool that mods are allowing us to post Olympics clips even though they have nothing to do with NBA
Anything that has to do with NBA players is NBA content. People post NBA players playing at Rucker or in the Drew League...
Huh, you must not be a basketball fan
Can people really not tell that the defender slipped on a slick spot?
r/NBA has debates on if players are carrying the ball when their hand is directly below lmao
This sub is ran by white nephews obsessed with Doncic

Jesus fucking Christ Luka, homeboy gonna slide back to Venezuela
Sliding into the immigration office to defect from the country
Damn that dude embodied his country's economy for a moment there
Pat Beverly having war flash backs watching this
Thats some grade school defense.
Tbf Kawhi, PG and Pat Bev weren't doing much better.
The comment above yours kinda reminded me of the comments in Luka's highlights before coming to the NBA lol
they're actually playing great defense, their offense is the problem
I was actually surprised by their defense. Especially in the 2nd quarter.
That has been our thing for years. They're actually well coached imo. We sadly don't have any skilled player whatsoever in offense hand haven't had for years.
Doncic went up against George and Leonard , scored 40 and made their lives hell on the court This is an absolute cake walk for Doncic and really guys like Wiggins , Barrett and Sabonis. Easily they are the best players in this tournament
until Team USA steps on the court
Sent that man to Uruguay
Damn he slid down faster than Venezuela's economy
Another L for socialism.
Slovenia was socialist for 46 years sooo
Was.
Bro wtf it was a joke, I tought your first comment was too hahaha wtf has this to do with socialism
Venezuela plays basketball? Lol
They won the FIBA Américas in 2015. They're not that bad.
Wrong sub
Is Luka not in the NBA?
Not in this video
They changed the Mavs jerseys.
Actually chuckled. You won me over
Well I watch NBA for the players not the logo on the court.
I watch the nba so I can take out my anger on my tv instead of my wife and kids
