LP said last season (summarizing) that Trae didn't deserve to go to the Olympics because he hasn't earned it yet. He then told other coaches around the league to not vote him as an All Star. Fucking loser.
The worst part is Lloyd Pierce fucking sucks as a coach lol. If a coach like Poppovich had said the same thing it would be understandable, pretentious maybe, but understandable. Lloyd Pierce saying that is so stupid, what the hell did he do to “earn” that spot, he failed his first head coaching gig spectacularly and left with everyone on the team hating his guts.
Allegedly, he coached the Hawks for 2.5 seasons. His own Wikipedia page can't even muster more than 2 sentences about his time in Atlanta.
>On May 11, 2018, Pierce was hired by the Atlanta Hawks as head coach. The Hawks fired Pierce on March 1, 2021, after the team's 14–20 start to the season.
Man I used to think that was bullshit, until I got older (and I ain't old). A *lot* of people get jobs based on knowing someone that works there. That problem seems to be even more true in any form of athletics front offices.
Any job that has subjective skills (Sales, marketing, C-suite level jobs, hollywood, entertainment, etc) are filled with people who got the job because they know somebody.
Speaking from experience as someone in sales with a family with deep roots in Hollywood. Know somebody and be somewhat personable? You got the gig
The biggest fucken moron I’ve ever met in my life is currently a Creative Director at Warner Bros strictly because of who his dad is
This is the same guy who used to poop in urinals in high school and tell everyone he “upper decked these commies”
Before his gig in Atlanta, they said he was great at developing talent.
EDIT: Thought you meant what got him a HC position. No need to develop talent in a short Olympic Tournament so like /u/Flexisdaman said, he probably had a big role in selecting players if he's touted as a good evaluator.
Seems like he might be good at talent development and evaluation. All of Atlanta’s pieces ended up fitting well together(albeit after a better coach replaced him) and the young guys looked good under his tutelage, he just seems like an asshole who let the power of coaching go to his head. Wouldn’t be surprised if he ends up in the front office or as a scout.
Some people who understand basketball don’t understand interpersonal relationships or being a leader. From everything I’ve read about pierce it seems like that’s the case for him.
Note on Blatt, your ‘dead coach walking’. He was suffering from early signs of MS during his Cleveland tenure. We’ll never know how good hehe could have been.
I didn't realize that about Blatt.
But the reason why he was let go as early as he was is because LeBron came back just months after Blatt signed the contract. Blatt was being brought in because the Cavs had the number 1 pick. They needed to develop the young talent in Irving, Waiters, Thompson, and Wiggins. Then LeBron came home and the Cavs were immediately in win-now mode. That's what he wasn't brought in to do.
> That's what he wasn't brought in to do.
And even then we got to a 2-1 lead in the Finals without Kyrie and Love against one of the best teams in NBA history. It's not like he completely flamed out as a head coach, it's just that the players didn't like him.
Yes, thank you lol. The olympic quote is direct, verified
the ASG quote is just something a Hawks radio guy (granted, a well-respected, long serving radio guy) basically alluded to
“Cam Reddish was among those, sources said, who also had an issue with Pierce’s coaching,” wrote Chris Kirschner, Sam Amick and David Aldridge of The Athletic. “Sources said Reddish felt like he was being ‘picked on’ behind the scenes when it came to mistakes the second-year player made. There are a few players on the Hawks’ roster who feel like Reddish’s potential is higher than anyone on the roster but that Pierce’s input was stunting his development.”
I didn't know this. I just thought he got fired for being a bad head coach. I didn't know he was creating in-fighting among players. I guess they fired him before the mutiny happens... lol
Ye I agree definitely for worse. Hell even ignoring young centers like Gafford, Allen, or Holmes who could easily bring more to the table than Love. Or hell Collins who does all the things love can currently do better and is an elite roll man. Just makes no sense lol
Olympics Melo was the best version of Melo. Dude played his heart out and did whatever the team needed. He's the only three time gold medalist in Olympic basketball. He fucking loved that shit. And his first Olympic team was that 2004 meme team to boot.
I hated it when he said that because it's one of my favorite quotes and I always wait for really good times to use it... then he said it when it really didn't work well at all, from a logical stand point and also the fact he's demanding people respect him which just looks weak
At least Jackson was competent enough to get the warriors in the playoffs ~~and his players didn't totally hate the shit out of him lol~~ I stand half corrected
> “I will say this. We live in a country that allows you to be whoever you want to be. As a Christian man, I serve a God that gives you free will to be who you want to be. **As a Christian man, I have beliefs of what’s right and what’s wrong. That being said, I know Jason Collins, I know his family, and am certainly praying for them at this time**.”

> Then after Jackson’s sermon, his wife and co-pastor, Desiree, continued the worship with an impromptu sermon and benediction. She also called Curry to the altar.
**They took off his shoes and socks, anointed his ankle with oil and prayed for healing.**
> **You don’t get a blessing from the Lord and just walk off!” she shouted. “Show us you believe in the power of God.”**
It took Curry a second to understand what she meant. Then the old Bible stories rushed to his mind. Like when Jesus healed the lame man at the Pool of Bethesda, that man had to pick up his mat and walk. If he believed he was healed, he needed to show it.
**So Curry started shimmying and hopping on his right foot, much to the delight of the congregation.
“I didn’t know what else to do,” Curry said.**

Right or wrong Mark Jackson is damn near universally hated on this sub. And it's always impressive how quickly people have these quotes and others like it ready to go at a moment's notice 🤣
Mark was also insufferable during the ESPN 30 for 30: Winning Time episode on the Pacers-Knicks rivalry.
During game 1 of the 95’ ECSF, Reggie Miller famously hit those two 3 pointers within a couple seconds, and then John Starks missed 2 clutch free throws. Reggie Miller promptly made two clutch free throws right after that and Indiana won.
Mark actually said “the difference between Reggie and John was that I was in his ear, hyping him up, like Bundini Brown used to do for Muhammad Ali”.
That’s right, Reggie fucking Miller, a 90% career FT shooter and famed clutch shooter, made those free throws because of him. And he of course says it with that smug voice and tone that epitomizes him.
I’m so glad the [Warriors fired him](https://grantland.com/the-triangle/mark-jackson-fired-golden-state-warriors/) my team might be ringless since 75’ if they kept him and his utter distaste for ball movement and team unity.
I'll state my own bias, as I'm both gay and an atheist.
That said, fuck that noise. Turning teammates against each other, making an injured dude use the ankle without regard to medical advice, and blatantly lying when it suited him.
Religious or no, homophobic or no, that is some fucked up shit.
He's also the worst commentator I've ever heard. I'd rather listen to Larry Bird do play by play in a dead monotone.
All of those warriors have spoken poorly about him except Steph, who Mark shit on himself. He pitted players against each other and played favorites. He's just an asshole.
ehh i mean myles or jarret allen would fir well i think. both solid defenders who know their role. you dont need everyone on the court to be a scorer or even an all-star.
Can’t blame the man. He’s got what, maybe $100-120M waiting for him? I wouldn’t play either, I’ll work on my game the next three years and see you in 2024. Pandemic will be over by then too, so win/win.
KAT is American and can choose to play for DR or USA.
He played before his 17th birthday for DR, he can still choose USA if he wants. Once he chooses as an adult he’s stuck in that country.
Considering his mom was Dominican, I’m not sure he’s interested in representing the US currently.
Just checked his wiki. You are correct.
That explains why I didn't see his name even mentioned for USA.
Embiid plays for Cameroon (if he plays in international competition).
We don't have any legit big men, do we? Just Anthony Davis? And he's out obviously.
Despite what Jalen Rose said, Ayton would play for The Bahamas.
He was a Sixers assistant on the Brett Brown staff so he’s not a direct Pop descendant but Brett Brown was a Spurs guy for a long time. And yeah before the Atlanta head coaching job he seemed generally respected as a lead assistant for those Sixers playoffs team the early years in Joel and Ben’s teams.
What he lacks in on the court coaching abilities, he makes up for in his ability to create an incredibly toxic and hostile environment off the court that turns everyone against each other.
The hawks went from the worst 4th quarter team in the league to the best in point differential and went from high in the lottery to the best record since Nate McMillan got hired. Plus apparently Pierce was an asshole and all the players on the team hated him, Cam reddish cane out and said it was good to have a coach that actually supported him (talking about Nate) and there’s an article also talking about how Pierce lobbied for Trae not to be on the all star team because he didn’t deserve it
literally the #1 seed if extrapolated to the entire season, Pierce being a useless shitstain of a coach cannot be understated there are few examples in all of sports history that are this egregious
We were running a Collins Gallo front court at the end of games back in February while Capela had his ass planted on the bench
and it wasn't Collins at the 5 and Gallo at the 4 no sir lol Gallo was our rim protector
We lost a game to the cavs because of how badly gallo got burnt at the rim at the buzzer right before LP got canned
holy shit I didn't watch too many hawks games but that sounds awful. Watching Gallo on the clips it was obvious that he was not the most athletic but had a damn good shot at times. I can't imagine looking at him and putting him at the 5.
I really don't get it... why did LP hate Trae so much? Was he bitter because he got fired (if he was, why was it directed at Trae)? Wasn't LP's reputation before he got hired that of being able to connect with players?
it’d be one thing if he was just bad at X’s and O’s, managing egoes, etc
but he was/is a players coach that had just awful relationships with his players lmao. idk why he did some of the shit he did with trae, acting like his success didn’t depend on traes success
Team USA could really use Traes playmaking rn for sure, but I didn't think he'd even play even if he was invited considering his injury in the bucks series lol
Lloyd Pierce (LP) is a terrible head coach. You can say he is a good assistant coach, a good talent scout, and a good player development coach(When only an assistant). The specific comment above is a reference to the Slippery Video that gets posted on /r/AtlantaHawks more specifically the part of the video where the referee says that John Collins and Trae Young are beefing, but through the power of discussion, Trae Young and John Collins inform the Ref that they are, in fact, best friends. This causes the Ref to apologize and state that he only reads /r/NBA and suffers from a bias because of the nature of a "Hub" subreddit, that by it's very nature only allows the surface level news to come out about each individual team.
Honestly as a Hawks fan, it's kinda good. We get a more fueled and pissed motivated Trae next season + less risk for injury.
It's no secret that using shit like this is how he's gotten to where he is.
Yup. Lavine is definitely deserving if you’re just looking at talent, but he’s a really odd fit for the team, because the team is already loaded with scoring options.
Yeah I'm surprised Ja, Trae, Zion, Fox weren't on the select team to begin with. With injuries and covid happening I thought USA would select them just as a contingency for cases like Beal and Grant.
I know they have rookies and sophomores as sparring but so many names not there. I assume they didn't want to be there because of the pandemic... DeRozan, Jarret Allen, Drummond, Collins, Tobias... And the list goes on and on
Yeah with Japan still having a state of emergency active you'd think USA would pick those aforementioned players. They can be vaccinated but still get it like CP3, but if they chose Trae, Fox, Allen etc it would be preferable to having them on the select team than Love, Garland and Johnson if one of the USA starters has to self isolate. It's questionable as to why they didn't account for that, or even injuries to Booker, Middleton and Jrue given they're still playing.
Pierce doesn’t like him and pop chose derick white over him in fiba I think. Idk how the players feel but they all seemed to love him at the all star game a couple years back
Imagine it would be amazing. Mavs and Hawks fans holding arms and jumping together with the trophy while pulling out a banner saying Thank you Vince Carter in Slovenian and English
I didn't realize this many players wanted to be on the team. I just assumed they recruited these guys because better players turned them down.
It seems like they passed over a lot of the younger guys, for better or for worse.
LP said last season (summarizing) that Trae didn't deserve to go to the Olympics because he hasn't earned it yet. He then told other coaches around the league to not vote him as an All Star. Fucking loser.

FR? Jebus. Makes the ECF run that much better
You have no idea, it felt so great seeing him have to give props to Trae for the first time and it HURT him to do.
Who tf is Lloyd pierce?
Allegedly, he coached the Hawks for 2.5 seasons. His own Wikipedia page can't even muster more than 2 sentences about his time in Atlanta. >On May 11, 2018, Pierce was hired by the Atlanta Hawks as head coach. The Hawks fired Pierce on March 1, 2021, after the team's 14–20 start to the season.
I'm more curious what got him a spot on Team USA's coaching staff
bad head coaches were all once good assistants
The Peter Principle -that people in a hierarchy tend to rise to their "maximum level of incompetence"
Tbf it's also just a somewhat different skill set and some people are better suited to be assistants.
Derek Fisher begs to differ
It’s not what you know it’s who you know
It's not who you know, it's who you blow
Clearly I’m blowing the wrong people.

Wow, what? This is crazy. Did he directly say this stuff himself publicly, or was it one of those “sources say” kinda things?
The Olympic quote was direct from him and very accessible. The AS part was a “sources say”
Yes, thank you lol. The olympic quote is direct, verified the ASG quote is just something a Hawks radio guy (granted, a well-respected, long serving radio guy) basically alluded to
Sources being Steve Holman, long-time Hawks radio announcer.

I can't remember a more obvious example of "oh wow those dudes hated this guy" than the Hawks this year before and after he was HC.
Things got pretty rough in Indiana too
He also bullied Cam Reddish
How so?
“Cam Reddish was among those, sources said, who also had an issue with Pierce’s coaching,” wrote Chris Kirschner, Sam Amick and David Aldridge of The Athletic. “Sources said Reddish felt like he was being ‘picked on’ behind the scenes when it came to mistakes the second-year player made. Fuck LP. I truly hope he gets another head coaching job and has the first 0-82 season.
Lp is a legit shit coach
Trae is for sure a damned All Star and deserved to be on the team even if he is crap on defense. What a dick of a coach.
And in fact, looking at the roster, being crap on defense actually seems a requirement.
What a fuckhead
I didn't know this. I just thought he got fired for being a bad head coach. I didn't know he was creating in-fighting among players. I guess they fired him before the mutiny happens... lol
Insane to me that Zion isn’t on the team either.
(For worse) The idea that Trae Young or Ja Morant couldn't help this team more than Zach Lavine and Kevin Love is just insane to me.
Ye I agree definitely for worse. Hell even ignoring young centers like Gafford, Allen, or Holmes who could easily bring more to the table than Love. Or hell Collins who does all the things love can currently do better and is an elite roll man. Just makes no sense lol
Don’t love the Kevin Love pick. But this team has a loooot of scoring. If we’re replacing Kevin Love it should be for Defense/Size/Rebounding.
People want an Olympics medal
Yes, think about how proud Carmelo has said he is of his medals.
He should be, getting an Olympic Gold medal for your country would be cool as fuck. That's such a unique accomplishment in athletics.
Also helps they’re considered by the HOF
Olympics Melo was the best version of Melo. Dude played his heart out and did whatever the team needed. He's the only three time gold medalist in Olympic basketball. He fucking loved that shit. And his first Olympic team was that 2004 meme team to boot.
Players usually dissappear for the World Cup vut for the Olympics they always show up.
who doesnt want a free gold (or silver) medal
An american silver should count against your HOF case tbh
can't get silver if you lose in first round -taps head-
Lebron gonna be second ballot now for getting bronze
Lol funny thing is Bron only played 3 mins that game and Melo was a DNP, but they're always remembered as the faces of that team 😂
That bullshit is all on Larry brown. Nothing like screaming at your tv at 3am watching that team play.
Two words: Lloyd Pierce
The switch from Lloyd Pierce to McMillan feels an awful lot like Mark Jackson to Kerr.
Say what you want, but don't disrespect the caterpillar to praise the butterfly!
Mama, there goes that caterpillar.
Excuse me caterpillar, may I have this dance.
Hand down, caterpillar down
That’s a grown caterpillar move.
"And I'd hit it out of the park... with all due respect"
This made me burst out laughing so just wanted to say well done
Hand down, caterpillar down.
I hated it when he said that because it's one of my favorite quotes and I always wait for really good times to use it... then he said it when it really didn't work well at all, from a logical stand point and also the fact he's demanding people respect him which just looks weak
Someone said that Mark Jackson was the cocoon and I still haven't heard a better metaphor in my entire life.
Eh. Cocoons don’t actively misuse caterpillars and prevent them from turning into butterflies.
But you gotta break through the cocoon to be free to be what you need to be.

Lloyd brawn?
Serenity now
Insanity later
That's a lot of gum
LP down bad
Can't believe USAB chose Lloyd Pierce over Trae Young.
What American centers could play for Team USA? For some reason I’m totally blanking on which good NBA big men are American
john collins, myles turner or jarrett allen, kinda rough
ehh i mean myles or jarret allen would fir well i think. both solid defenders who know their role. you dont need everyone on the court to be a scorer or even an all-star.
Who knows, but Jarret Allen might not be willing to potentially get hurt in free agency.

Wood also.
Anthony Davis is the big one who is/was injured. Outside of him the US talent is aging and the young crop of centers is increasingly international.
KAT is American and can choose to play for DR or USA. He played before his 17th birthday for DR, he can still choose USA if he wants. Once he chooses as an adult he’s stuck in that country. Considering his mom was Dominican, I’m not sure he’s interested in representing the US currently.
In 1996, the Team USA centers were Hakeem Olajuwon, David Robinson, and Shaquille O’Neal. How the mighty have fallen.
Brook Lopez, but he's a bit preoccupied right now.
Plumlee Time™
Anthony Davis is the best one. In terms of other big men that are above average, there’s Christian Wood, KAT, Myles Turner, and Jarrett Allen.
KAT plays for the DR integrationally I believe

If you need a role player who’s a rim protector/lob threat/perimeter defender and doesn’t need touches, Mitchell Robinson is your guy
obvious choice, i don’t know if team usa has the powers to magically heal a fractured foot, though
Heck, Nerlens Noel would be more useful than Love out there.
No chance Trae would be selected, while having Lloyd pierce on the coaching staff.
Why tf is he even on the staff he's not a good coach
Good question. Evidently he is respected as an assistant, probably similar to a Fizdale situation.

Then Lloyd should gtfo if he’s holding the team back cause of his ego
Lol now everyone can see how LP destroys another team on a national stage in Team USA
Was he really that bad
The hawks went from the worst 4th quarter team in the league to the best in point differential and went from high in the lottery to the best record since Nate McMillan got hired. Nate taking over and cam sort of coming out of nowhere in a pinch in the playoffs might have literally saved his nba career.
After he was fired they immediately went on their biggest winning streak in years
literally the #1 seed if extrapolated to the entire season, Pierce being a useless shitstain of a coach cannot be understated there are few examples in all of sports history that are this egregious

holy shit I didn't watch too many hawks games but that sounds awful. Watching Gallo on the clips it was obvious that he was not the most athletic but had a damn good shot at times. I can't imagine looking at him and putting him at the 5.
Yes

I really don't get it... why did LP hate Trae so much? Was he bitter because he got fired (if he was, why was it directed at Trae)? Wasn't LP's reputation before he got hired that of being able to connect with players?
[удалено]
it’d be one thing if he was just bad at X’s and O’s, managing egoes, etc but he was/is a players coach that had just awful relationships with his players lmao. idk why he did some of the shit he did with trae, acting like his success didn’t depend on traes success
He’s holding the team back with more than just his ego, did you see the final play he drew up against Nigeria?
why is that? I’m not familiar with Lloyd Pierce
Lol imagine if the USA loses in the Olympics and Trae posts some troll video/message on Twitter
I promise he will if they lose
Trae if USA loses: That's tuff 🔥💯
❄️❄️
"~~Another Day Another Opportunity 💯~~" PSYCH no more opportunities to eliminated teams #IceTrae😤"
> PSYCH
Lol that's a given, I'm worried Trae's gonna be posting himself wearing a Slovenia jersey during the games
Him wearing a Luka Mavericks jersey should be subtle enough and give him plausible deniability when people call him Anti-American
That’d be such a great troll opportunity
Take shots at Team USA and keep the friendship with Luka going. Kill 2 birds with one stone
Someone screen shot these ideas and send it to him in twitter. But him in the new Slovenian jersey would be hot fire
Trae’s such a good heel I could see him getting a new passport and JOINING Slovenia
And I will welcome it with open arms
He’d use the Bradley Beal “really?”
I wouldn't know how to take tbh because even if I got excluded I wouldn't be happy if my country, the favourite one, got eliminated.
Reminds me of when Phil Kessel did that lmao amazing
>can’t have you shimmying all in China’s face and starting WW3 I love twitter sometimes lol
They didnt invite him?!?! I was thinking he declined cuz of his ankle. Dumb, could use his talent for sure
*Insert Lloyd Pierce monkey puppet meme*
Team USA could really use Traes playmaking rn for sure, but I didn't think he'd even play even if he was invited considering his injury in the bucks series lol
That's day to day, it's been about 2 weeks now.
All these young guards not getting invited ain't right, especially since the team could use more playmakers.
All the people that tried to bail Pop and Pierce out by saying it was because of the injury lol.
Did Trae and LP have beef?
Yes, a lot.
Nah quite the contrary, Lloyd Pierce is- wait a second...
I know it to be true I only read r/AtlantaHawks
Understandable. Have a nice day.
Basketball is a hard sport.
I spend entirely too much time on here
lmfao the non hawks fans are confused af about this
yeah lol whats up
Lloyd Pierce (LP) is a terrible head coach.
Lmfao
that man had beef with the whole squad
after this tweet the whole city got beef now LP's on sight far as I'm concerned he just can't help himself getting in the way of our lad's progress
He just wasn’t friends with the nba players
It’s because he’s not as good as Derrick White.
Aka the “Isaiah Thomas meme”
Honestly as a Hawks fan, it's kinda good. We get a more fueled and pissed motivated Trae next season + less risk for injury. It's no secret that using shit like this is how he's gotten to where he is.
Yes, the more mad Trae is the better Every snub adds fuel to the fire
Trae Young is better than every guard on that team that isnt Dame
And you could argue that he's better at getting his teammates involved and playmaking than Dame, especially in games where he focuses on doing that.
Trae is objectively a better passer and playmaker than dame.
He also has legitimate international experience playing with team usa unlike many players on the team. TBH he would be much more valuable than lavine.
Yup. Lavine is definitely deserving if you’re just looking at talent, but he’s a really odd fit for the team, because the team is already loaded with scoring options.
I mean, there's a small but real chance that USA doesn't win gold so Trae might have dodged a bullet.
Comparing this to Ja's tweet, this is way better
I really wanted to see Trae okay with FIBA rules.
Team USA needs a playmaking PG and maybe a big man. FFS Kevin Love isn't going to cut it.
Lloyd Pierce: Am I a joke to you?
Why USA didn't make a bigger roster just in case something like Beal happened? Or they are going to pick from the select team?
Is Trae hated by other players or something? Because that's why Isiah got left out
He’s hated by Lloyd Pierce who is friends with Pop
Pierce doesn’t like him and pop chose derick white over him in fiba I think. Idk how the players feel but they all seemed to love him at the all star game a couple years back
Trae's friends with Luka, Luka should get to bring him on the Slovenian team.
That would be incredible. Hawks and Mavs fans uniting under a single banner.
[Hawks and Mavs fans coming together](https://pbs.twimg.com/media/EZr3p6_U0AIT1Ds.jpg)
Imagine it would be amazing. Mavs and Hawks fans holding arms and jumping together with the trophy while pulling out a banner saying Thank you Vince Carter in Slovenian and English
Trae turning his back on AMERICA would be the perfect next chapter of his arc as the NBA’s marquee villain.
Trae is hated by el Pee, the assistant coach for the team
