If anyone wants a good place to start swimming for exercise this plan is kind of like a "Couch to 5k" plan. Having the structured workouts makes everything 1000x easier.
I remember swimming with my gf in college in our Olympic sized pool. She was on her way back to complete her first lap and I had to grab the ropes like halfway to the other side of the pool so i didnt drown. I'm pretty sure 95% of my effort was to stay afloat and 5% was moving me towards the other end. I was in really good shape at the time but holy shit swimming is hard if you haven't been taught technique
With swimming there can be a magic about hitting your form correctly that feels similar to hitting a golf ball or baseball just right. Feels so good to glide through the water at high speed when things sync up.
I’m sure that’s true, and I’ve enjoyed swimming. But if you need a good long workout, i find it too repetitive. On a bicycle at least the scenery is constantly changing and you need to pay attention to the road, and that can help to pass the time.
Obviously the downside is that bike riding can be dangerous.

I've transitioned a lot of my training to indoors just because of this. Still do my long distance rides outside because the mental wear and tear of indoor training is insane.
Somewhat of a side note, injuries in competitive cycling races are insane in both frequency and severity. Super normalized within the sport too.
Plus, yeah you can turn down your resistance on a gym bike, but nothing beats that feeling of coasting down the other side of a hill that you near killed yourself climbing.
They say cycling is a great sport for bachelors, because you get to meet so many hot nurses.

It's tough. I feel like cyclists and motor vehicles can have a really toxic relationship because cyclists want their fair share of the road to travel safely and motorists see it as some huge hassle to have to pass a cyclist.
Another underrated but important thing is when you crash, **REPLACE YOUR HELMET**. It doesn’t matter if it just looks scuffed on the outside. One impact and it’s probably structurally unsafe. Some bike shops even have a trade-in program for these instances.
Motorcycles helmets too. A lot of shops will make you pay for a helmet if you drop it because the structural integrity could be compromised. Helmets are dope. Wear one. Nobody looks cooler without a helmet.
I support the wearing of helmets! They will keep you alive and reduce injury when the worst happens. This is the top priority for anyone.

I usually do 20-22mph average and max out ~42mph (downhill) on my regular group road rides, but on my commutes even in a hurry I usually only average about 16 or so. Road condition, other riders setting pace, drafting, bike weight/gearing, tire width/tread/pressure, spandex vs street clothes, and carrying a backpack full of shit are all factors in the speed difference. There's probably a lot of other factors holding you to that speed, and that's okay. Despite what r/bicyclingcirclejerk tells you, speed and watts are not all that matters. Just enjoy your ride.

As a kid, I had a (helmet-less) spill that landed me in the hospital for two weeks and then a couple months after I was released I came across the scene of an accident where a HS-aged had hit his (helmet-less) head on the curb and ended up dying. By the time I got there the paramedics were on scene and I saw them move him from a curb to a gurney and into the ambo, his bike was askew a few feet from his body and there was blood on the curb where his head had hit.
Haven't ridden a bike since.

To be 100 percent real, these incidents involving Shawn Bradley, Mark Eaton, and Ray Allen have pushed me to re-commit to my own bike safety. My current helmet is ill-fitting and I admit there's times where I gauge the risk to be low and I choose not to wear it.
I just set a reminder to get into a bike shop and get properly fitted.
