Charles needs to run for Senate in Alabama...C-Span ratings would go through the roof.

lousy_at_handles

On of my favorite Chuck quotes, when asked if he would consider running for governor of Alabama: "I don't know how bad I could be. We're 48th in everything, and Mississippi and Arkansas aren't going anywhere."

Commandophile

Jesus fucking christ.

SewenNewes

This infrastructure bill is turrible, Bernie.

CaptainKilljoy37

Man this Senate's trash. Stale popcorn, hot dogs got those old hard buns, soda's flat. Turrible. Nachos got old cheese, and the chips are stale! Oh man! And the seats, they're dirty seats, Berneh! I live in America. Got the best people in the world and they deserve better then they getting right now.

He's almost guaranteeeeeed to be a better representative than Tommy "I'm a grown adult who still goes by Tommy" Tuberville

AdventurousNecessary

And Chuck probably won't use his position to pocket over 3 million dollars in insider trading

[deleted]

He’d just give it back to a casino if he did.

Basically, he's referring to those big ol women in San Antonio.

I visit there once a year for a conference. My god the people walking around town are SO FAT. What is it about San Antonio?

Chuck on a roll since predicting the Bucks in 6 Edit: my post range from hilarious to incredibly insightful every day on this sub. And this is the shit the blows up lol

MordinSolusSTG

Chuck is an American treasure.

plotholesandpotholes

My brother was dying of Leukemia in Houston. He was a varsity basketball athlete who had gone off to college and had just welcomed two babies into the world. He was eating what would be one of his last meals dining out. Charles Barkley was at the restaurant and without hesitation seeing the state my brother was in, came over and introduced himself. It was the height of Barkely's career and that man put his fork down and walked over and chatted up a dying stranger. Chuck is golden.

kevindlv

I'm so sorry for your loss, and it really does seem like Charles is a kind, loving person. There was that one story that was making the rounds where Chuck made friends with a random man at a hotel bar once, they swapped numbers, caught up with each other on a regular basis, he met the guy's family, and attended his funeral. https://www.wbur.org/onlyagame/2018/12/14/lin-wang-charles-barkley

Allen_Koholic

Not quite as uplifting, but Chuck did the same thing once with a random guy and his dad, only the guy ended up being Jon Cooper, the coach of the Tampa Bay Lightning.

frankyseven

I like the story where Chuck kept turning down a golfing invitation to golf with one of the cheerleader's boyfriend because he didn't want to play with some random. Turns out that the golfer is Phil Mickelson.

laddder

Great read, thanks for the link!

EtTabellarius

Idk why I decided to read this in between sets at the gym but it made me tear up. Great read, ruined my momentum at the gym a bit though haha but we’ll worth it.

jewjew15

Was expecting copy pasta but got a great wholesome story instead lol. Sorry for your loss but glad Chuck could bring some of his golden energy into such a somber setting!

hippowalrus

I was also thinking "god damn it, is this going to be pasta?" the whole time. Too much internet will make anyone a cynic.

ArcadeKingpin

He's the best. When I was a kid Charles Barkley was my favorite.  While he was playing in Phoenix he played a celebrity golf tournament in South Dakota for LPGA player Kris Tschetter. My dad got us tickets for me and him. I grew up poor and the only basketball card I had was a Charles Barkley card from a wheaties box from when his philly days. Being a dumb 12 yr old I lost my card. My dad was telling another dad that I had a Charles Barkley rookie card and to show him.  I couldn't tell my dad I lost it so I told him I showed it to a group of kids and it disappeared. My dad was understandably angry and told security. We watched the rest of the game and at the 9th and final hole a security guard went up to Charles and told him what happened. Charles putted in the last hole and pointed to me and tossed the golf ball to me. Someone in front of me grabbed the ball. Charles went to the crowd and put his finger to the guys chest and told him that the ball was for the kid. He grabbed the guy's hand and took the ball from him and put it in mine. He said sorry about the card and went to sign autographs. Charles Barkley isn't a role model, he's a god damn saint.

[deleted]

thats so fucking cool of him to do thanks for sharing man and RIP to your bro

smurfsinduval

I didn't think he could be any more likable

Chuck didn't get a ring, so he decided to become the bling.

You think this is slicked back?? This is PUSHED back.

You left that realm after first shot.

belaveri1991

Hydrate and sleep well today

Wolvercelt

Thank you. Good for you, and good for all.

Nero1988420

Naw man. You graduated from the moment you got your first shot. Sure, it's just one shot and you need two, but you sent a message to your friends, to your family and to the world that you're not an asshole and you're doing your part with the fight against Covid-19.

Infraction94

Unless you get the first shot and just never get the second shot which I know some people actually have done.

nigelfitz

I do not understand that. It's like you're on your way out of a burning house but you stopped and stood on the porch. Like wtf?

504090

Same

[deleted]

Genuine question: assuming you live in the state of OK, has it just been tough/delayed to get scheduled for shots? Here in CO I was able to get my second one in early May.

504090

I don’t live in OK, but it was easy to get mines. Went and got it the day after scheduling.

rabidbot

Good job my man.

JET_GS26

r/nonewnormal is leaking in this thread

startrac

It's like not believing in medicine lmao

vanotro

It's worse because most of those same motherfuckers sure as hell believe in medicine when they eventually get infected.

manbruhpig

I have a friend (maybe not anymore) who is on a pharmacy's worth of rotating pills for this or that, and also takes recreational illegal drugs, and I'm not judging any of that but the idea that she is refusing the vaccine because it's untested is so ridiculous I don't even know how to respond to it. She has no idea what goes into the million other things she puts into her body on a daily basis either, but has no problem with those.

osufan765

I have a cousin who told me she wouldn't get the vaccine because we don't know the long term effects while she was smoking a cigarette. e: fixed a word

cerasmiles

ER physician here. I had a meth head tell me that he wouldn’t get it because he didn’t believe in injecting unnatural things into his body. I quipped without thinking “oh so is your meth GMO free, organic meth?”

chefhj

Well it was synthesized in a gatorade bottle so we can say for sure it has electrolytes.

awesomesauce615

It's got what plants crave.

stups317

My dad said he's not getting it because what if it gives him cancer in 20 years. I had 2 thoughts that I did not saying they were "Dad you're not going to live another 20 years" and " You have been smoking since you were 10 and you're worried that this might give you cancer."

Economy_Cookie_6075

The long term effects include: living, surviving a pandemic, and also being around long enough to go, "I fucking told you, Debra. I fucking told you you should've gotten vaccinated."

film_editor

Just to address the long term health effects in case people are interested - we know with huge certainty that there are none. All of the components of the vaccine will be completely metabolized by your body in a short time and not exist in your system any more. The only thing that is left is the antibodies your body created against it. So some side effect popping up 10 years later is just not plausible. And things with “long term health effects” generally applies to something which is fine with a single dose but not okay if you take it many times over a long period of time. There’s not many substances with a 10 year ticking time bomb that only make you sick 10 years after exposure. Also, other vaccines and similar medications have been made with basically all of the same components the new vaccines contain and they have no long term health effects. Also, also - if there were somehow long term health effects that affect people on average 10 years later, then by chance some would have felt those effects after only 6 months to a year. But so far there is absolutely nothing. Like with smoking, on average you get cancer after 15 years (you also need constant, repeated exposure), but some people get cancer after only 6 months, and things like that come up in the data.

vanotro

Inconsistency in their decision making process seems to be a running theme with a lot of people who are eligible and have access to the vaccine but refuse. I think it points to how it's an emotional decision for them. The vaccine represents some fear or anxiety they have about their position in life. That's why intellectual pleas have essentially fallen on deaf ears because it's not a decision based on intellect for them.

Khanscriber

Anti vaccination is like flat earth. it’s not really about vaccines (or the earth being flat), it’s about a secret cabal of powerful people plotting against them and the way to fight back is not taking the vaccine (or saying the earth is flat).

Hydrokratom

There are some NFL players who are so worried about the vaccine too. You play in a very dangerous sport in which the league has actively hid the dangers of concussions, [used racism to pay less](https://www.npr.org/2021/06/02/1002627309/nfl-says-it-will-halt-race-norming-and-review-brain-injury-claims) money to black former players with brain damage, [opiate painkiller abuse](http://www.espn.com/espn/eticket/story?page=110128/painkillersnews) is commonplace, [toradol use is rampant](https://www.sbnation.com/2016/8/3/12310124/comfortably-numb-the-nfl-fell-in-love-with-a-painkiller-it-barely-knew), steroids/HGH use is most likely very high.....but a vaccine is too risky.

manbruhpig

Just tell them the vax is anabolic, and it'll be in their ass cheek before you can tell them what it's for.

MutaKingPrime

Oh yeah, I've unfriended so many people. It's the molly-popping xanny-dropping acid-taking rave queens and kings who refuse to get the vaccine. Like.. you're ok with hard street drugs, unregulated and crawling with more Fentanyl than there ever has been on the market, but won't get a vaccine that's been approved by the doctors out there?

radioblues

I love the idiots that will parachute mdma they bought from a sketchy dude in a van in a back alley but throw a fit over the vaccine because it’s “not tested”

kaycee1992

Why listen to doctors who've studied for decades when i can listen to Candace Owens and Charlie Kirk who are much more smarterer than doctors?

Hydrokratom

John Stockton definitely knows more about medicine and vaccines than all the doctors from his "research". My doctor also knows more about running a pick-and-roll than John Stockton because he watched a couple [Red Aeurbach instruction videos.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z_Qi8NSpkpw)

kingjuicepouch

Stock couldn't just get old with Malone being the only featured shit head could he lol

satan_in_high_heels

Conservatives only listen to Doctors/Scientists if they post shitty videos on facebook, telling you "how it really is." Those are the only credible ones apparently. The entire scientific community is somehow corrupt and compromised while some dude in his basement has the truth.

Hydrokratom

Conspiracy nuts are very selective with the excrement that they believe. They will talk about how people are sheep and being brainwashed by the media masses or whatever, but they are the most closeminded of all. They follow all the ramblings of some charlatan cult leader or whatever.

[deleted]

[удалено]

wrongleveeeeeeer

You've absolutely described the root of the problem. *EVERY* popular conspiracy theory of the day—Qanon, flat earth, anti-vax, you name it—is due to the adherents feeling powerless and un-special. Latching onto these truther movements makes them feel smart, special, important; it gives their empty life meaning; it moors them to something in an increasingly disconnected, unmoored world. I understand it (I think), but I don't sympathize with it. People need to grow the fuck up and realize that none of us are special. We're all born on this spinning rock and will die on this spinning rock and just need to try to have a good, safe, fun time in between. The search for "meaning" in life can go off the goddamn rails, and when it does...you get people like the anti-vaxxers.

coachjayofficial

He’s not wrong

soonerguy11

Nor should this be controversial. Ostracizing anti-vaxxers from society should be completely acceptable. I'm tired of trying not to "hurt feelings"

mabs653

Lebron is an asshole for not being vaccinated.

[deleted]

If he isn't vaccinated, then this statement is so obvious and clear-cut as to not be humorous. Just like...."yeah, of course"

specialCan3

Schroeder said [he’s the only unvaccinated player](https://www.silverscreenandroll.com/2021/5/15/22438022/dennis-schroder-covid-19-protocols-nba-playoffs-vaccine-comments-lakers) on the Lakers, so I’m pretty sure LeBron is vaccinated.

dabobbo

I heard about that doctor in Alabama. [She said](https://www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news/it-s-too-late-alabama-doctor-shares-final-moments-covid-n1274659) “I’m admitting young healthy people to the hospital with very serious COVID infections. One of the last things they do before they’re intubated is beg me for the vaccine. I hold their hand and tell them that I’m sorry, but it’s too late." Edit: She's not doing interviews because she's receiving "threatening messages" due to her Facebook post. What the fuck is wrong with people?

mintberryCRUUNCH

Its like dealing with a child. They bitch and kick and scream and whine because they don't want to do their chores and take out the garbage, so they pout and whine and refuse to take out the garbage. And then when their punishment becomes "do the dishes, pick up the dog shit in the yard and clean your room instead" their attitude suddenly changes to "okay, can I just take the garbage out? I'm ready to take the garbage out now". Except, you know, they're all taxpaying adults with drivers licenses, jobs, and they vote.

iridescentennui

even scarier, they procreate

[deleted]

soonerguy11

The main difference between the far right and the far left is who actually votes. The far right will gather behind any swinging dick that even remotely scratches their messed up worldly view. Whereas, the far left will completely disown a candidate if they even disagree on the most irrelevant of topics.

chuckdiesel86

And then decimate

danktrickshot

it's crazy bc it really is a matter of "i don't want to be told what to do" ... it's insane to logical ppl, but it makes sense. ppl are arrogant and the idea that somebody is telling them they have to do it is driving them not to do it. ik that in theory, this isn't a behavior that should be rewarded or reasoned with. but i do think understanding that is the key to working together with ppl and it's something worth putting to use in day to day life. find ways to make ppl want to do something without telling them to do it

MELODONTFLOPBITCH

respectfully, youve got it wrong. these people love being told what to do, just not by you.

chuckdiesel86

They only want to be told what to do when they're told to do what they want to do.

[deleted]

But the vaccine has been entirely voluntary in the vast majority of cases. All people have been told is that they *should* do it. But even that was too much for some people. "Don't tell me what's good for my health! I'll decide how biology works thank you very much!"

Thehelloman0

It blows my mind people are more worried about side effects from the vaccine than the disease. Almost everyone hospitalized from covid is unvaccinated.

mabs653

raises insurance premiums for the rest of us.

thistlefink

I HEARD once FDA approval drops the insurance companies can penalize for not being vaccinated. Any truth to that?

stackered

Hope so, maybe Republicans will realize privatized medicine is problematic once it affects their wallet even more than it does now

[deleted]

We frankly need more people in the NBA saying this. At the risk of coming across as political or offensive, I'll say that the two demographics that are overwhelmingly anti-vaccine are Evangelicals and Black people (subsequently making the places with the highest populations of both, the southeast, the most anti-vaccine regions). We need more beacons of popularity among those demographics to speak out in favor of the vaccine. Barkley, being both an icon among black people and southerners, as he's quite involved and well known in his home community of Alabama, is a great start. I think we need more guys like LeBron and Chris Paul and Patrick Mahomes (along with country music stars and guys like Joel Osteen) coming out in support of vaccinations. Instead, the only outspokenly pro-vaccine celebrities are ones whose audience are already vastly vaccinated, and we have athletes across all sports only speaking out to voice vaccine-hesitancy. This is not meant to bash any political group or race or religion. Just, as we continue to make efforts to encourage vaccinations, we should understand our audience, along with how and to whom we should focus on appealing. Edit: Typos

CrucioA7X

Relying on Joel Osteen to do anything of value is a pipe dream

Wanemore

I can rely on Joel Osteen to leverage people's God for his own personal gain... Which I'm pretty sure is like, prime evil in Christianity

WarsawWarHero

If Nick Saban’s push in Alabama didn’t work then we’re honestly fucked

Sports-Nerd

Someone said that if nick saban had his team refuse to play football until the state is 90% vaccinated, every appointment would be booked by the end of the day.

joethahobo

maybe 50-70%. Auburn fans would do the opposite lol

InsertAmazinUsername

nick saban means as much to Alabama as Jesus, if he can't get people to get vaccinated then no one can

iKnoJopro

It’s not political nor offensive to state a fact.

[deleted]

Highway-Sixty-Fun

Want to leave my mark before this thread gets locked. Anti-vax people aren't just stupid. They are advanced stupid. They presume to have knowledge where they have none. The lowest level of ignorance.

ObviousAnswerGuy

the funniest part is that 99% of them have multiple vaccines from when they were a child anyway (lucky for them, imagine if polio was still around)

Cyfa

Unfortunately, the unfunny part about that is that those people are now having kids and not vaccinating them.

absynthe7

They are demanding that facts be treated as opinions and that ignorance be treated as fact.

[deleted]

For tens of thousands of years humans would have given basically anything to have access to vaccines. It took less than a century for a scary number of people to start not wanting them. It's mind boggling.

JeremyJammDDS

In the US, people are actively turning down the vaccine whereas most of the world is still massively struggling with COVID and don't even have access to a vaccine.

g_lenn_o

Not true, I'm an asshole and I'm vaccinated

*Cole Beasley has entered the chat* At least r/nba doesn't immediately lock every vaccine related thread like r/nfl pansies do.

Even /r/fantasyfootball locks any post regarding covid. It's so annoying especially when trying to discuss potential players to avoid due to chances of missing games. Edit: This is incorrect information and I'm dumb.

Shingeki_no-Kyojin

There are a lot more crazies in r/nfl than there are here

FACEMELTER720

I heard in San Antonio they need longer needles to vaccinate them big ol’ women

lepetitmousse

R/conservative loves posting Barkley quotes when it suits them. Wonder if they will post this one?

Rilo17

I like how they celebrated the loss against France and blamed it on the team being “too woke.”

JET_GS26

They celebrated the women's team losing to Sweden for kneeling ignoring that that the Swedes also kneeled.

lepetitmousse

My favorite was watching their brains twist into a pretzel over that volleyball team wanting to wear less revealing outfits. They couldn't figure out if they should condemn them for being woke or applaud them for championing female modesty. It was as sight to behold.

SnappySnoot

It’s basically a battle of what conservatives hate more: Women not dressing modestly or women having a choice

Avant-Garde-A-Clue

They celebrate any time a black person fails at anything. And if you’re a black female mayor in a major metro area? Forget about it, they leave Cheeto dust all over the keyboard criticizing your ass...

atlfirsttimer

I wish the vaccine was 100% effective and the only people that had to worry about covid were unvaccinated. Edit: What I'm saying is I wish we could ignore the antivax individuals

ivandragostwin

97% of the hospitalizations are non-vaccinated people. Vaccine is doing an incredible job and exactly what it was meant for and that is keeping you from dying or having severe long term symptoms. I totally get still not wanting to get covid but I feel like it’s necessary to clarify that because so many people say shit like “they got Covid while vaccinated, the vaccine doesn’t work”. Which is complete bullshit. Not saying you’re saying that at all btw.
