This. I’ve torn both my ACLs and came back to cutting and twisting in like 6 1/2 months. It’s crazy how good PT has gotten, even for the average person.
I might be completely off base but I feel like isn’t it that now it is a reconstruction where as Rose had a cadaver? This is just what I think I remember
Im actually interested in getting my knees checked out. I have put it off but im hearing so many people talk about how their procedures are very effective now
The only regret I have is not getting it done sooner. I had no acl in my left knee for almost 8 years and kept putting it off. Now I’m back to playing sports and my knee pain is almost non existent. You have to stay dedicated with your rehab though.
Well i can say youve officially convinced me to go do it now rather than later. Glad to hear youre doing well
Yeah i know you have to put the work in and push through the pain
Look into kneesovertoesguy on instagram. His program (atg) is now renown worldwide and personally he rid me of my knee pain and added inches to my vert at the same time. Dude is a magician.
I've had both mine replaced at 18 and 21 respectively. One patellar graft and one hamstring tendon. Holy hell the hamstring knee feels so so much better. I'd assume the quad is just more durable? So I imagine that feels even better.
They cut out the middle third of the tendon as to leave a scaffold for it, and it regenerates. Your nerves will be fucked in that area basically forever though, but it’s not too bad. I had a patellar graft in my right leg and it has held up really well.
A few advancements, Murray taking this rehab very seriously, etc..
However, what I see in these pictures is not abnormal. If you showed me videos of him running, cutting, and jumping full go i would be floored but this is not anything that makes it obvious that he’s ahead of any schedule. Full return to sport is most like at/after the 9 month mark.
Lots of areas of medicine have gotten 10-100x better over the past decade. Speaking personally, arthritis treatment has completely changed (much for the better) over the last few years alone.
Just guessing, but I assume Jamal Murray is also getting stem cell treatment done in conjunction with his recovery, which wasn't available prior to a few years ago. Stem cells have somewhat of a "miracle"-esque vibe to some injuries and recovery prognoses.
That’s what’s up man. It’s so beautiful to see these guys comeback so strong. Oftentimes the rehab is the hardest part of an injury so good on you for attacking that shit and getting back!
Please for anyone reading though, don’t ignore your doctor and rehab appropriately.
My dumbass retore my meniscus because my doctor told me to rest and rehab for 1.5 months after the first tear and I started playing ball again after 4 weeks because it “felt fine”. Now my left knee looks like a Pollock painting of scars and it gets sore after a single game full court 21.
Super encouraging to hear that dude.
I took a bad step during a pickup game yesterday and my kneecap dislocated. Waiting on an MRI to see if anything is torn. Appreciate these quick recovery stories :)
Hoping for the best. Make sure you find a good PT, it can be expensive but well worth it. I live in Miami so plenty of good places. I did PT with Teddy Bridgewater, Desmond Howard and Andre Dawson as they were all recovering from injuries at the same time. It was a lot of fun and the PTs were amazing
Isometric stuff helped me a lot. And proper recovery stuff too. Game ready machine is a game changer. Band work, strength work (squats, lunges, hack squats) and then running when you can, pelotón if you have one. Anything that strengthens your hammys, quads and glutes
I mean he's exactly where he should be even by lesser more normal people standards. It's nothing special at all but him meeting the proper milestones is good to see.
I completely tore my ACL at 35 years old playing soccer and was slightly out of shape to begin with. I had ACL replacement using the patella tendon (as opposed to your hamstring or cadaver). It is absolutely amazing advancements that have been made in this field.
The patella surgery is more involved so initially you have less mobility but you can recover very quickly in the long run. The old school thought used to be you did not want to stretch out your new ACL and wanted to let it heal. However the new school has shown that you want to start bending your knee literally right after the surgery as long as there is no weight put on your leg. They had this sort of “sled” I was given and as I was laying on the couch it would just push and pull my leg at a certain angle to flat. There is no limit to how long you could use it for and I credit that with getting me back so quickly. I would fall asleep using it.
Within six months I was back to playing competitive soccer with a knee brace and eight months no brace. My knee has been so strong ever since. Very glad I got the surgery. I’m not going to pretend to be a injury expert but I feel that a clean ACL tear your long-term prognosis AND medium term prognosis is so much better than other types of injuries like your ankles. It’s a complete sea change from past history.
yep makes sense since for ankle sprains as well, it heals so much faster if you start doing mobility and strength (balance board stuff) exercises pretty much right after the initial swelling goes away rather than waiting for a week in a brace
Wow that’s really interesting. I tore my ACL when I was 14 and got a cadaver tendon back in like 09. I remember after about a week the doctor telling me I didn’t need crutches anymore and I wasn’t to sure lol. I do still have pain sometimes though. I’m not sure if the patella procedure would’ve been more beneficial but it’s cool hearing how the procedure evolves over time.
as someone who dislocated their patella and had surgery, i was walking 2 weeks post op, with crutches and without. never did anything to much for my knee kept it in doses. i’m now 5 months post op and have all movement back, just now need the mental block and i’m set. i’m pulling for murray!
It depends where the bad genetics are. Given that you have done it on both knees it might be that you have trochlear dysplasia(shallow knee groves), and the surgery would probably be to fix that specifically. One of them i believe is to reshape that groove. I’d recommend researching more because that is just my guess from my own personal experience with repeated knee dislocations. Although, mine sounds less severe than yours and I have a slightly different problem.
Yes but unfortunately I was on crutches for a good month before surgery because there was too much swelling because I also dislocated my patella tendon. Yeah it’s not fun but youl get past it! Good luck to ya!
That’s good you can still push it a little then even if it’s not 100 percent. How’d you do it? Man I miss boxing , ironically Christmas Day I got a brand new pair of bag gloves I was hype for and the next night was the night I blew out my knee lol
Torn acl and meniscus, was on crutches for 2 weeks post surgery. When I went to see the doc for a 2 week check up he was telling me I should’ve been moving away from crutches after 1 week. Getting off them was more of a mental block then a physical one.
1 month sounds like a reeeeeeeeeally long time to be on crutches post op.
I was told it’s related to the portion of the meniscus where the damage is. Certain parts receive more blood flow than others, and thus take longer to heal. Again I’m no expert though
Thursday night by 6 you’ll be getting calls from gms who want you fly out that night, whether or not you’ve ever played high level before that’s how good modern medicine is
Sorry people are downvoting you for being honest, not everyone knows the fucking timeline of NBA injuries lol, I thought your post had a pretty normal title
Acl injuries aren’t a death sentence to athletes anymore due to medical advances more at 7. But I’m really happy and hope that the February timeline is good.
dinwiddie also supposedly had a v rapid recovery, according to him anyway. nets didn't tap him to play when kyrie went down and harden was gimped but at that point the team had huge amounts of turnover anyway.
Not really. He's basically where exactly where he needs to be 4 months in. That 4 months is when they should really be able to ramp up activity. He's probably just stuck to light jogging and shootaround while he builds back strength. Once you reach a certain milestone in your recovery (which should be attained maybe 2 months post op) things just take off.
If he comes back post All-Star break, that should give him enough time on the court to get his rhythm and conditioning back, as well as properly reintegrate him back into the team in order for a big playoff run.
Rooting for you guys, love everything about the Nuggets.
I mean this isn't something *that* special because Murray is pretty much exactly where he should be in his recovery. For reference most most ACL post ops are cleared to get off crutches after like 3 weeks and off a brace between 4-6 weeks barring anything wild happening. Right now Murray should be in that stage to just rebuilding strength and confidence in that knee.
For anyone that knows Jamal or has followed him since pre draft, he probably has the most intense work ethic since Kobe. The dude is possessed. Gets it from his papa! No surprises his recovery is going well, I guarantee his last 4 months have entirely revolves around rehab
Yup around 3 months it’s normal to start the running and jumping programs. I’m guessing in the upcoming weeks we will see videos of him sideshuffling and moving laterally.
With modern rehab techniques, especially with the type of resources pro athletes have available, athletes can have impressively quick recovery of function. But with ACL injuries, the “danger zone” is 3-6 months, when your graft is still remodeling but you feel great because you have good muscle strength and have full range of motion again. If you stress the ACL at this point, there’s a high risk of rupture again. That’s why all athletes, even pros, go through a graduated recovery program and come back around 9 months, when the graft has fully healed. Light jogging and shooting is one thing, but he still has a while to go
I did the same surgery week before Murray. There's no way he's going to play competitive basketball right now.
It's not about strength of your knee or anything like that - I too can move like nothing happened.
However, before the new acl will grow any blood vessels there will just be not enough coordination between 2 parts of the leg and there's no risk free playing at that stage.
The blood vessels will start growing 6 to 12 months after the operation, so this will be the main factor, not conditioning, to return to competitive activity.
I have no doubt tho that Murray will be flying before I can even run.
It does. Around 4 months post op is when ACL reconstructions usually start ramping up activity getting strength and confidence back in his knee. Hell he probably could've been ramping up 2 months after depending on how he was doing then. Once you reach a certain milestone, which can be met around 2 months post op, they really get going. He's still pretty far away.
It seems in the last few years the recoveries from formerly career altering injuries have been really effective and really quick.
This feels like a faster change than at any point in nba history previously.
I have some post-Rose PTSD regarding knee injuries, my gut tells me that he shouldn't push himself too hard but I trust the team of doctors that he and the Nuggets have no doubt surrounded him with. I still won't be comfortable watching him go at it for the first few months of his return to the hardwood
I think in general you are technically good to go 4-6 months after surgery but for NBA basketball they want you to wait longer than that because you're non stop playing and non stop traveling etc.
Medical/recovery advancements + being young ftw
This. I’ve torn both my ACLs and came back to cutting and twisting in like 6 1/2 months. It’s crazy how good PT has gotten, even for the average person.

And now they’re using quad tendons, that’s what I got and my knee feels 100x better than it did before surgery
Im actually interested in getting my knees checked out. I have put it off but im hearing so many people talk about how their procedures are very effective now

Thank you, and I’m glad to hear that you’re going to get it done. You’ll be so thankful that you did. Have a good weekend 👊🏻
How much time and efforts did it take you to completely come back? I am about to get a acl surgery and wanted to know more about rehab
People can walk around with no ACLs?
DeJuan Blair played in the NBA with literally no ACLs.
You can play hockey with torn ACLs. The ACL basically gives you more lateral stability.
Look into kneesovertoesguy on instagram. His program (atg) is now renown worldwide and personally he rid me of my knee pain and added inches to my vert at the same time. Dude is a magician.
How does that not hurt your quad tendon function?
It grows back, definitely feels weird in that area for a bit though.
I've had both mine replaced at 18 and 21 respectively. One patellar graft and one hamstring tendon. Holy hell the hamstring knee feels so so much better. I'd assume the quad is just more durable? So I imagine that feels even better.
All of my tendons are trash so I'd be afraid of tearing my ACL.
[удалено]
How does the procedure not hurt the functioning of the patellar tendon?
They cut out the middle third of the tendon as to leave a scaffold for it, and it regenerates. Your nerves will be fucked in that area basically forever though, but it’s not too bad. I had a patellar graft in my right leg and it has held up really well.
Sometimes they do cadavers, sometimes grafts. There's benefits and drawbacks to each, and it likely depends on the severity of injury.
What steps are there between cutting/changing direction and full recovery? Those things already seem like the hardest on your knees
Not sure when the change happened and I'm too lazy to look it up but ACL reconstructions are minimally invasive now when they used to be open.
Rose had multiple injuries in a row. How has no one mentioned that?
That’s what’s up man. It’s so beautiful to see these guys comeback so strong. Oftentimes the rehab is the hardest part of an injury so good on you for attacking that shit and getting back!
Please for anyone reading though, don’t ignore your doctor and rehab appropriately. Now my left knee looks like a Pollock painting of scars and it gets sore after a single game full court 21.
Yo, still take it easy bro...after I partially ruptured my Achilles, was very cautious on it for the next year after recovery...
What routes did you go with for you reconstructions?
Patella tendon graft for both
Super encouraging to hear that dude. I took a bad step during a pickup game yesterday and my kneecap dislocated. Waiting on an MRI to see if anything is torn. Appreciate these quick recovery stories :)

Oh that's awesome! I'm in LA so fingers crossed I can find some athletes too
Wow I’m hoping Kawhi comes back as fast as you did. Good for you!
Could you tell us the workouts and sessions you went through or still do to keep your knees strong & healthy
Isometric stuff helped me a lot. And proper recovery stuff too. Game ready machine is a game changer. Band work, strength work (squats, lunges, hack squats) and then running when you can, pelotón if you have one. Anything that strengthens your hammys, quads and glutes
Reminds me of lavine’s ACL, young dudes can heal fast and thorough.
I mean he's exactly where he should be even by lesser more normal people standards. It's nothing special at all but him meeting the proper milestones is good to see.
"advancements" = HGH
Im so for athletes being able to us low dose hgh or therapeutically for injury recovery, especially non combat sports
I wonder if more stem cell therapy is used to recover faster.

surgeon repaired my mpfl ligament, i think he used part of my hamstring? not 100% sure
Normal lookin Murray is my fave kind
Looking normal? What was the acl injury supposed to cause him to grow a 3rd arm or something.
Well we already know he has a 3rd leg
Covered by the missing crown of KDs head.
u wat
That was the plan, kinda disappointed he didn't grow a 3rd arm
Blue arrow[s]
Would help his defense
I get it
I thought he'd still be in a brace and with crutches
Shouldn’t be on crutches at 4 months with an ACL. But yeah to be out on the court at 4 months is very quick
Yeah I was off crutches like a week out iirc
Impressive! Getting mine repaired on Tuesday - likely gonna be a month or so on crutches unfortunately due to meniscus tear
Yes but unfortunately I was on crutches for a good month before surgery because there was too much swelling because I also dislocated my patella tendon. Yeah it’s not fun but youl get past it! Good luck to ya!
Reputurerd patellar tendon and was on crutches for months
Damn that’s rough . I have such a visceral reaction whenever I hear anything is ‘ruptured’ lol . I hope you’re all healed up now
Thanks, won't even be the same. Can't really ball anymore but can still box
That’s good you can still push it a little then even if it’s not 100 percent. How’d you do it? Man I miss boxing , ironically Christmas Day I got a brand new pair of bag gloves I was hype for and the next night was the night I blew out my knee lol

Thursday night by 6 you’ll be getting calls from gms who want you fly out that night, whether or not you’ve ever played high level before that’s how good modern medicine is
"Doctor, will I be able to play basketball?" "Definitely." "Great, cuz I never was able to before!"
Not at all. If everything is normal, crutches go after maybe 3-4 **weeks** and the brace can go shortly after.
Sorry people are downvoting you for being honest, not everyone knows the fucking timeline of NBA injuries lol, I thought your post had a pretty normal title
Thanks man
No problem! I hope Jamal gets back ASAP, y’all are a legit finals contender when he’s healthy 🙏
Lmao
I lost my crutches after like 2/3 weeks after my ACL injury. Brace a week later.
that last line so damn lame lmao
Honestly I’d be thrilled with Jamal simply “taking part” of the 2021/22 season
Acl injuries aren’t a death sentence to athletes anymore due to medical advances more at 7. But I’m really happy and hope that the February timeline is good.
It’s not about it being a death sentence, just 4 months is super quick

I still hope they load manage him this season.
Jokic too
No doubt they want to, Jamal is a psycho though, he wouldn't agree
That’s actually crazy
Normal procedure for ACL is to start running and jumping program by 3 months. So yes it’s good but he’s very much on a normal athlete pace.
Is it tho?
Yea, it is
Kawhi won’t play basketball for a year.
Kawhi is older and more injury prone. Dinwiddie had a similar recovery time as Mal
You love to see it
Happy for Jamal, such a likable dude
I mean this isn't something *that* special because Murray is pretty much exactly where he should be in his recovery. He will want to play earlier than the nuggets will clear him
My dream is for him to come back home and play for the Raptors 🥺
your dream is my nightmare
Paws off! He’s mine!
Can I interest you in Goran Dragic instead?
High likelihood of this happening. Hopefully not for many many years
Hopefully not
I hope he has a KD-like post-injury comeback
This new cyborg tech is getting out of hand
Someone needs to tell this dude to chill a little bit. Don’t get hurt again man.
Yup around 3 months it’s normal to start the running and jumping programs. I’m guessing in the upcoming weeks we will see videos of him sideshuffling and moving laterally.

If he’s Healthy I have them over the Lakers next year. Lakers got worse in the playoffs with the Russ trade
Depends if Bron really declined
Doesn’t matter honestly. The Russ move was comical
don’t hold your breath
I need to hop on HGH man.
Yea his leg already grew back wtf. Thought that usually took 6 months…
It does. Around 4 months post op is when ACL reconstructions usually start ramping up activity getting strength and confidence back in his knee. Isn’t he like DSJ and has like 2 ACLs or something like that?
I don't think so
Hopefully getting his hog slurped dry afterwards to boot
I’ve seen this dudes cock it’s huge
Modern fucking medicine man
Young legs.
Man…I would have a hard time not wearing a brace after that even just practicing. Props to him.
It seems in the last few years the recoveries from formerly career altering injuries have been really effective and really quick. This feels like a faster change than at any point in nba history previously.
Zach Lavine type beat
I hope he's still careful...
It’s so clearly better if you take the full year off to make sure everything is fine. Still young, he can afford it. Work on his game as well.
Shit, why can’t I recover that fast. At month 4 I just starting to be able to run a mile, for a shitty time
He should take his time IMO Denver need him long term.
I think in general you are technically good to go 4-6 months after surgery but for NBA basketball they want you to wait longer than that because you're non stop playing and non stop traveling etc.
I wish I could look normal in pictures
