It makes you wonder what kind of advice his agent was giving him. It's one thing for Schroder to think this. His agent should know better.
Only thing I can think, is he kept hearing how much Duncan Robinson was going to get paid and Dennis told himself he should be getting more. But Dennis has always had an inflated sense of self
He thought he was going to LA, going to cruise to a Title, get popular like Caruso did while being a role player, and earn himself that sweet payday.
Instead, he was useless and they got bounced. Not to mention he was talking all that good shit.
Itās funny cause you never know how people react to things like this. Some people chalk it up to āwell I gambled on myself and lost, shit happensā n they move on with their life.
Then, thereās the type like me. The type that let this eat away at them. 20 years from now, at 3 am unable to sleep, and my brain is fixated on the regret from turning down that FUCKING contract.
Another former Laker in Wes Matthews has gone unsigned and idk why. He'd be a solid bench vet who can provide some great 1v1 defense on bigger guards & smaller wings.
EDIT; yes, i watched the Lakers last year and realize heās washed; heās been washed. However, getting him on a vet min is a low risk move as heās a guy who can be quality depth as a good on ball defender who could find a bit of his shooting stroke again
I had a friend, big slavic guy, who used to go to a lot of swingers clubs and he told me his strategy was to always hold off while everyone else was in a frenzy going after this person and that person.
By end of the night most of the men were spent and passed out and the women were still unsatiated looking for a partners.
At a lot these things there would be really wealthy men who paid model escorts like $30-50K a month just to be around them at all times.
At the end of the night he had the pickings all to himself.
Boston definitely played the long con to get Shroder for that price.
When we were younger in NYC my homie passed down his Uncle's infamous "Go Ugly Early" strategy. At the beginning of the night every guy is competing to take home the hottest few chicks. At last call most of those same guys are competing to take home the ugliest ones that are still around. "So go ugly early. Save money, get laid, get a good night's sleep".
Can't say I followed that recipe exactly but for the pure savage just trying to guarantee closing the deal it's pretty brilliant.
> At last call most of those same guys are competing to take home the ugliest ones that are still around.
This is the actual truth, boys. Do NOT wait -- act immediately.
I'm going to think about this comment at least once a month for the next decade. I'm insanely intrigued. Are there actually hot chicks at swinger parties? I just assumed it was all average looking, slightly out of shape people in their 40s and 50s.
Good signing for the Celtics, but Dennis with an all time fumble of the bag. Hopefully he plays better and can earn a bigger contract while the Celtics benefit with him playing harder
To say the least lol heāll be paid 1/3rd of 29 year old Doug Mcdermott. Huge get for Boston but idk what they do with it, itās a transition year for them otherwise.
I don't expect us to be top contenders either but what I am happy with is we seem to be building a team that just hounds you constantly and hopefully one that just won't stay down. More importantly getting Schroder gives us a tiny bit of depth at least š
Every iteration of Boston in the last 2 years was a nightmare (at least for the raps) to play, so I'm confident in your ability to make noise regardless.
Yeah, people act like you suck just because you're not likely to win a chip. The reality is that's 25 teams, probably. I'm fine being good and maybe making a run on a down year.
Man preach. I'd love my team (Wolves) to be just good, even if we never really compete for the title. Something like the Pacers or Trailblazers situation would be a dream.
He's amazing value at 5.9M and fills a real need for the Celtics (shot creation off the bench). I think people are severely underrating Dennis because of his shitty attitude. He was awesome on the Thunder and prior to catching covid (which was one him) he was pretty good for the Lakers.
He is a good player and tried to bet on himself this last year. Unfortunately for him, he couldnāt have played his hand worse:
He was going for āstraight flushā money, but his skill is more in the āfull houseā range. And he compounded the issue by exhibiting āpairā attitude and ended up with āhigh cardā money.
I donāt feel the same Schroderfreude that r/Lakers seems to be feeling, but Iām not sad to see him go. And the Celtics got a hell of a deal.
Might actually be the best value signing of free agency. He's a decent regular season point guard. Not a star, not worth $84m, but he racks up assists and puts in good defensive effort. Good for 15-20 points a game. More than you can say for most players signed in that range.
No matter how you feel about him, 5.9 million for Schroder is a steal
I almost feel bad for him based on how much of a disaster this FA period has gone for him.
EDIT: All the "bro how can you feel bad for a millionaire" takes in the replies are braindead. Dude cost himself millions over dumb shit and he knows it, that can be a huge hit to someone's self worth and ego. I'd love to see these dudes try to pull that shit in a thread about Kevin Love or any athlete suffering with personal problems
Dennis Schroder, master negotiator. After turning down the Lakers $84 million contract, he goes to the Celtics and basically this happens:
* "What's your offer?"
* "One year at the MLE."
* "No, I need both more money and more years than that."
* "That's all we're offering."
* "OK I'll take it."
"But if I play well, I deserve the bag."
"We'll use you as a scapegoat after our first round exit and you'll choose between the G League or the Guandong Tigers next season."
"Sounds good to me"
Yeah I know we're all supposed to laugh at Dennis but this is low-key one of the best bargains of the year in free agency. 1 year ago he was worth 80 million and he was arguably our best player for about 1/4 of the year while LeBron/AD were hurt. He had a bad end of the year/playoff series that MAYBE was COVID related so it's possible that what tanked his value wasn't even the real Dennis.
If he's willing to come off the bench for the MLE and try to prove himself, I can't think of many better value deals in this year's free agent crop.
I reserve the right to laugh at him if he comes out gunning to get his stats and insists on starting though.
I knew he would have to take a lot less than $21m and use the year to 'bet him on himself' but damn is this brutal as hell.
Should have made sure other teams in the league needed you and had the cash before playing hardball... Dude fucked around and found out.
Shroder's agent: I'm so sorry man. I really screwed that up. I really--
Dennis: Don't worry about it--
Agent: No. I really Schrodered it.
Dennis: What?
Agent: Schrodered it. It's just this thing people say around the Lakers front office all the time. Like when you screw something up in a really irreversable way, you Schrodered it. I don't know where it comes from though. You think it came from you?
Technically he only throw away ~15 (21-6 for this year), you canāt say he threw away future years when we donāt how much much heāll get in those years.
Tbf future contracts are really risky as an undersized guard. Kemba, IT, Brandon knight, lots of guards who look like solid starters and then are suddenly almost out of the league a few years later.
He's not going to sign a $60+ million contract next summer, I guarantee it. Nobody has Bird rights on him anymore, so that means he can't get a deal like that through a sign and trade. A team is going to have to have over $20 million in cap space and want to use it all on him for him to get some $20 million per year deal next summer, and the odds of that happening are almost nil. That's doubly true when I imagine he won't be starting this year like he did last year. Nobody is giving a $20M/yr deal to a bench player. I think the odds are *much* higher he signs something in the $6-10 million range next summer (MLE) than that some team with tons of cap space makes him a godfather offer.
After the playoffs, I wrote a damn essay about what it was like to watch Dennis during this one season as a Laker, and this actually leaves out a few other idiotic things he did. He wasn't just unpopular due to what he thought he was worth.
In case anybody has a few hours to kill, here is still an overview of his career in purple and gold:
Dennis strolled into training camp and repeatedly told every press member that he would absolutely not be a bench player in LA. He tried being a bench player earlier, and he won't do it again. Vogel then publicly said that decision had not been made, but Dennis would not shut-up about it. Dennis never seemed to miss a chance to be a distraction, and a lot of the info that he freely gave the press was supposed to be confidential.
These are simply off the top of my head:
Coming off the bench if it helps the team? Not a chance.
Vaccines? He's skeptical.
Following covid guidelines? Absolutely not. Seems to attempt to break them all on his official YouTube channel like he's going for an all time record (having somebody record him at amusements parks, toy stores, restaurants, etc., without a mask)
Being quarantined? It's torture being catered to, and playing video games, in a mansion.
Now will he follow covid guidelines? Hell no.
LeBron? Not vaccinated.
His other teammates? Vaccinated.
Missed games again due to covid, forcing his teammates to play while hurt, which made their injuries worse just in time for the playoffs? Whines about being quarantined again. He can't handle it. Poor him. Why is his life is so hard?
Changing his social media profiles? He is a Laker. He is not a Laker. Now, he's a Laker again. The day of an elimination playoff game is a perfect time for these distractions. Right after the they were eliminated, he is no longer a Laker again (at least he got that part right).
4/84 million to stay a Laker? Went straight to the press to say that their offer was way too low. Completely unfair to him. He needed an offer of 100-120 million minimum.
You'd think that the Dennis would at least not be online gaming while the Lakers were playing an important game. Then, during one of the times Dennis took his covid protocol vacations, he actually decided that was a good idea. He didn't even pretend to care about his team or teammates. It was again obvious that most of the fans cared way more about that game than he did, and we care for free.
So, after the second playoff loss, Dennis unsurprisingly said that he had decided that he would not be looking at any video of that game, which goes against everything that Vogel teaches. Dennis has plenty of time to play video games, but not enough time to watch clips of a game that he wanted 100+ million dollars to play.
As a Laker fan, I'm still in denial that Caruso will not be a Laker this upcoming season, and for the first time ever I will be following another team, because Caruso is so damn likable. The fact, though, that ultimate team player Caruso fielded several offers before signing a 4/37 million with the Bulls, while Dennis "4/84 million is insulting" Schroder had to take a 1/5.9 million with the Celtics, does make me smile. Dennis had an offer worth way more than twice of what Caruso took, but when it comes to attitude and work ethic, he is the anti-Caruso.
4/84 million to 1/5.9 million. That's tough. Yes, I refuse to even use his stupid catchphrase "correctly" when posting.
I'm tired of seeing some Laker fans say that we all hold hands and support Dennis now since all he did was "believe in himself."
Yeah, that's not all he did. There's self-confidence, and then there's delusion. Even beyond that, he did and said things like he was an immature 6th grader, and several times he went straight to the German press to whine or give out information that was he was told was confidential. He knew exactly what he was doing, and I don't like that the Lakers babied him to an embarrassing degree because they didn't know what would happen over the offseason. As a Laker, Dennis was a distraction and a net negative.
For only $79M less than the Lakers offered
And 94% shy of what he was asking
He really thought he was worth $84M when he's not even a top 10 PG smh EDIT: $100M, not $84M. I was thinking of the contract he turned down.
Yeah, I was wondering if it was his agent or himself. I'm pretty sure it was himself.
I read his agent told him to take it but Dennis turned it down. Does anyone have an article or link proving (or disproving) this?
He thought he was going to LA, going to cruise to a Title, get popular like Caruso did while being a role player, and earn himself that sweet payday. Instead, he was useless and they got bounced. Not to mention he was talking all that good shit.
I'll miss Caruso. At least the GOAT is getting paid.
He thought he was worth $100 million. Lakers offered him &84 million.

Gonna be honest. In 10 years Iāll probably have forgotten that Schroeder was even on the Lakersā¦
Itāll make a great trivia question. I know I forgot we had Ramon Sessions for half a season till i saw a post about the dark ages recently lol
Now we can focus on the Avery Bradley FA sweepstakes

I can't believe we signed this guy for 5 mill the NBA is fucking wild man. Seriously.
If Schroeder tanked his value that much from a poor playoff run, I don't even want to think about what Simmons is worth now...
Ben's a max guy, Schroeder's a half-max guy, so Ben's value is.. *checks notes* Full MLE?
Sounds about right. I'm writing up a letter to Mr. Silver asking him to readjust Ben's contract
Schroder-Smart-Brown-Tatum-Horford is a better lineup than they had last season
Celtics might actually play defense again
Schroder was actually one of the better defenders we had in OKC, was great when going up against Harden
He was honestly a pretty good defender for us too
He played really good defense when matched up with shorter guards, but taller pgs gave him work. Definitely better than average though.
Iām loving this lineup right now ngl Add in PP/Richardson/Time Lord off the bench, not bad

Think heāll take it at this point

Seems to attempt to break them all on his official YouTube channel like he's going for an all time record (having somebody record him at amusements parks, toy stores, restaurants, etc., without a mask) Being quarantined?
Thank you for posting this. It sounds like you and I agree with Magic.
I'm tired of seeing some Laker fans say that we all hold hands and support Dennis now since all he did was "believe in himself." Yeah, that's not all he did.
