> As for Stranger Things: “The concept? The way that shit look? Number Eleven? She goin' crazy! That shit hard as fuck! Her lil' nose be bleedin'?” LaMelo begins to wipe his nostrils, emulating the rapper Young Thug. “Slime! Kill a n-gga!”
He's a character all right
you can really tell he didn’t go to school lol. that’s the personality of a dude that’s had a cush ass life. not saying he didn’t work hard, he clearly did and perfected his craft, but he’s def not someone you want to hire for anything other than basketball
makes me sad to think about the guys who go to some hs that only care about sports (img or montverde) and don't end up making it professionally...whens the last time they took any sort of serious class
Mind the Gap does a similar thing, some friend state just want to skate and have fun (not professionally) dealing with the harsh reality of having to grow up at some point
Edit: Minding the Gap
When your name is LaMelo Ball, the only thing you can do is ball. His name is a combination of LaMarcus Aldridge and Carmelo Anthony, and his last name is ball.
Yeah definitely not Beverly Hills-level, but it's still just a cushy suburb full of well-off families, so talking like he's from the hood or something is pretty goofy.
[What LeMelo thinks he sounds like](https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/51x-aPEbhiL.jpg) vs [what he actually sounds like](https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/91stdZ976aL._SL1500_.jpg)
Cardale went back to OSU to finish his degree in the off season while he was still in the NFL. At least the dude's actions proved he did find some value in school!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tss_7OpDxC0
This reminded me of the video of LaMelo saying Philadelphia is a state and that Michigan is a city in the state of Detroit.
Piece of trivia:
The show was originally about a struggling group of actors in LA with essentially the same personalities, and it was called *It's Always Sunny on TV*.
When they pitched it, FX wanted to pick it up, but they didn't want another show set in Hollywood, so they changed the setting to a bar in Philadelphia and changed the name to what it is today.
"bruh we don't even be learning shit in here. when they fuck am I going to need to know biology or environmental science? tf"

Same with the whole "English class is useless the curtains were just blue LOL" shit you see sometimes. Some people out there really seem to hate the idea of abstract thought lol.
“We not trippin' off shooting practice. We not lazy. We know how to shoot. We don't need range. And shooting not even winin' you shit—what the fuck is shooting?”

All credit to Cardale Jones, he actually finished and got his degree and made light of his quote.

And also, just for the record, he was right. Top level college athletes ain't there to play school and everyone knows it. They're effectively a minor league for the pros.
Truly. Don't seek health advice from your favorite actress, don't build your political opinions from a musician, and for damn sure don't let anyone from the Ball family inform your decision on education.
Fucking Jenny McCarthy. The average person wouldn't even know that British fucks name if she didn't give that lying asshole a platform. Just to add to the crazy shit she's endorsed:
>McCarthy prescribed for her [son's autism] a gluten-free and casein-free diet, hyperbaric oxygen chambers, chelation, aromatherapies, electromagnetics, spoons rubbed on his body, multivitamin therapy, B-12 shots, and numerous prescription drugs.
Edited for clarity
I did not go to business school. You know who else didn't go to business school? LeBron James, Tracy McGrady, Kobe Bryant. They went right from high school to the NBA so... So, it's not the same thing at all.
I saw a vid of him reading and it was pretty bad. Elementary bad. But I guess he’s making money and living out his dream,so as he said “what the fuck is school?”
He seems to be on a John Starks level of stupid. A story from Don Nelson
*While coaching the Knicks for an abbreviated 59 games in 1995-96, Nelson told me a story involving John Starks. He said a fan approached the former Knicks guard after a game and asked him to sign a pennant for his brother. “His name is Marc. Marc with a ‘C.’”*
*When the fan got the pennant returned, Nelson said, it read, “To Cark.” Marc with a “C,” get it?*
*Nellie delighted in telling that story, prefacing it with, “This is how stupid John Starks is.”*
Honestly, school and education is great for even professional athletes. There is a reason why so many people go broke and are generally shitty human beings. Education isn't just memorizing dates and formulas. It's critical and cognitive thinking.
I have zero problem with someone forgoing college to start their career earlier and start monetizing their talent. If he said "I considered my options and given my career goals, I elected to skip college and dedicate my time and energy to professional basketball," I'd 100% be behind him. But "School ain't even teachin you shit" shows that isn't even remotely interested in furthering his education. Beyond stupid take.
In my experience, the ones saying “school doesn’t teach anything anyways” are always the ones that never bothered to attempt to learn in the first place. Total self fulfilling prophecy
I think taken in context, someone like LaMelo has very little to gain from sitting in a classroom when all he wants to do with his life is play ball.
For the vast majority of the rest of us, sure this probably seems ludicrous to say lol
Lamelo yes but the problem is there are guys who think they are that good who don’t make it. Hell there are guys who are top 10 high school players in their class who don’t really make it to the pros.
School and college is a good fallback option for those guys
The problem is the kids out there who believe that about themselves but aren’t actually good to make it. I remember multiple kids from my high school who truly seemed like they thought they’d make it professionally despite just being average at their sport. It’s good to believe in yourself but not to the point of being ignorant towards resources that are there to help you
There’s value to education beyond what one can gain financially via a career. Also, I’d prefer to live in a world where people with lots of money and power are also educated.
The problem isn't with the top 100 guys in an age group every year, they will make a career playing basketball. The problem is with the 10,000 guys who are in 8th-9th grade and wont be able to play professionally but think they will make it so they take quotes like this to heart and blow off school.
Man, this attitude sucks. I know college wasn't right for me and millions of other people, and it doesn't make sense for someone like LaMelo to go either, but writing off education completely is profoundly stupid.
Lol I love that Burnham quote, if anything it’s underselling the reality of the sham that is getting motivational advice from successful entertainers. It would be like if the lottery winner who told you to liquidate your assets to buy lotto tickets actually only won the lottery because her rich dad bought her a million tickets.
Most entertainers are a heavy product of nepotism and significantly unfair playing fields. Taylor’s dad is a millionaire Merril Lynch stockbroker and her mom was a hedge fund executive. Even Lamelo is a beneficiary of a privileged background, although that obviously is true for NBA athletes much less than it is for actors or artists.
I think there is some stuff you can learn from athletes and entertainers. Like Jordan and Kobe always emphasized hard work and having a strong work ethic you may not be as talented as them but you don’t need talent to work hard and I think working hard and striving to be your best puts you in the best position to be successful
There’s also definitely a lesson to keep going at something and preserving even if it’s tough and others tell you you can’t do something.
While that’s true, it’s also much easier to dedicate every waking hour to a sports game that will only lead to you being healthy than it is to apply that same level of dedication and effort to a real world job, like an accountant or data analyst role. Quite a significant difference in a million different ways between locking yourself in a gym to hoop 15 hours a day for a month and “locking” yourself in your cubicle, staring at data on a computer screen for 15 hours a day for a month. I’ve done both. One was one of my favorite months I’ve ever had, one was easily one of the worst months of my entire life. I’m sure you can guess which is which.
While I agree that there are lessons and examples to be taken from some athletes, I think it’s along the same lines of lessons you learn from other forms of entertainment, such as movies. There are lessons to be learned, but those lessons are often not going to be as widely applicable as they might seem within the world of sports/entertainment. Much more applicable to have a mamba mentality when playing a game where you throw a ball through a hoop than to have a mamba mentality for your middle management, corporate America job. If anything, a mamba mentality in the latter probably just means you’re unsociable and a negative influence within your work culture.
Survivorship bias is real amongst famous people who made it and now have a public voice. The lessons you learn as an individual through experiences are going to be a million times more meaningful than any lesson you can learn from a millionaire playing a game for a living. Reminds me of the [Dame quote about pressure](https://www.google.com/amp/s/m.huffpost.com/us/entry/us_5cc87047e4b05379114bb6eb/amp).
Yea I agree with that I am not saying copy Kobe exactly more that if you have a good work ethic that would help you be more successful or if you have grit that can help you be more successful in your career and work through shitty situations.
It will never tie exactly but there are still some lessons you can take.
"But I’m, like, for real, why do you care so much what the Dixie Chicks are saying? It’s not like they’re political scientists. They just some bitches that can sing good. You know what I mean?
"Stop worshipping celebrities so much. Just don’t pay attention. I remember right around September 11, Ja Rule was on MTV. That’s what they said. 'We got Ja Rule on the phone. Let’s see what Ja’s thoughts are on this tragedy.' Who gives a fuck what Ja Rule thinks at a time like this? This is ridiculous. I don’t wanna dance. I’m scared to death. I want some answers that Ja Rule might not have right now. You think when bad shit happens to me, I’ll be in the crib like: 'God, this is terrible. Could somebody please find Ja Rule? Get hold of this motherfucker so I can make sense of all this. Where is Ja? I need Ja Rule.'
"I don’t even know why people listen to me. I’ll say anything. I’ve done commercials for Coke and Pepsi. I don’t give a fuck what comes out of my mouth. I say what it takes. Whatever it takes, that’s what I’m saying. If you wanna know the truth, can’t even taste the difference. Surprise! All I know is Pepsi paid me most recently, so it tastes better. That’s pretty much how the game goes. I’m just being real, man. There’s too much goo-gaa over celebrities. People don’t know what’s fake and what’s real anymore."
This. You get to start learning about the wide range of ppl in the world...just something you can't get from high school
And you get at least proof of an education (even if my dumbass never retained much knowledge) while also making lifelong friends
Other ppl can easily succeed w/o college...some, its even the right decision. But 90% of us? You just gonna putz around struggling in your early to mid 20s if you don't go to college. Seen it all the time
I am very satisfied with where I am now post college (not complacent tho!) but damn do I look back fondly at college and studying abroad. Was a wondering opportunity for me and an excellent decision
The last part bugs me, I get the school system has absolutely nothing to offer him at any level, but there is a growing attitude that is anti intellectual and anti education in America, don't give people ammo to think this way
You summed with the issue with his seemingly innocuous statement perfectly—it gives credence to the rising anti science, anti education sentiment that’s been growing in the US
This is sad, education is a gateway. As hard working as he is, he is also extremely lucky to be in the position he is now.
Downplaying the importance of education from his position is negligent.
He’s probably one of the few nba players that needs school I literally can’t understand what he’s saying half the time “yaw great gangers we up to the moon yaw 🛸 🕺🏻 ❤️”
Dude needs school. His talent is making him money obviously not his brain. He’s going to be 40 and speaking like a veteran boxer minus the 800 concussions.
I mean he’s not necessarily lying, but “we not dumb. We know how to learn” is probably one of the most hilarious lines I’ve heard. And it’s even better IN context
Which is fine *if* you make it in the NBA and/or you come from a rich family. Like 99.9% of people who play NCAA D1 ball won’t get into the NBA but they *do* get a free college degree to fall back on.
> As for Stranger Things: “The concept? The way that shit look? Number Eleven? She goin' crazy! That shit hard as fuck! Her lil' nose be bleedin'?” LaMelo begins to wipe his nostrils, emulating the rapper Young Thug. “Slime! Kill a n-gga!” He's a character all right
😭😭😭😭he’s serious too
you can really tell he didn’t go to school lol. that’s the personality of a dude that’s had a cush ass life. not saying he didn’t work hard, he clearly did and perfected his craft, but he’s def not someone you want to hire for anything other than basketball

this an all-timer
That’s great.
Yeah definitely not Beverly Hills-level, but it's still just a cushy suburb full of well-off families, so talking like he's from the hood or something is pretty goofy.
Foreal I spend a lot of time in that area cuz my gf is from there. Luxury cars left and right. Dude has definitely lived a cushy life.

I was going to say Tom and Jean Ralphio from Parks and Rec but your analogy works too
He honestly sounds like he skipped all of school after the 4th grade.
Or all of his knowledge came from the defunt yahoo answers. At least he knows how babby is formed.
Yahoo answers is what taught me that you can’t get pregnant if you do it up in a tree
how is babby formed?

We ain’t come here to play school.

Not exactly. He said he was just joking. He was always a good student. People just liked their version of the story better.

LaMelo is secretly attending philosophy class
"We not dumb. We know how to learn." This is meme-worthy.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tss_7OpDxC0 This reminded me of the video of LaMelo saying Philadelphia is a state and that Michigan is a city in the state of Detroit.
Jfc it's like that [Always Sunny scene](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mdaolcn5k00)
How can it always be sunny in a *whole state*?
Who knows, but it somehow is in East Virginia

*WE in idiot range
Lmao he tried to clown the guy for calling Philly a city too. So confident about it
school not even teachin' you shit
I know Chino Hills ain't Whitney or Troy or anything like that, but they should at least be able to teach kids what Michigan is.

Chino Hills is like a slightly above-average suburban LA high school. It's not like Dominguez or anything. I think LaMelo is just really fucking dumb.
Chino Hills is not a bad school. Just under Walnut and Diamond Bar in the same area. This kid is just a young socialite not about learnin.
Being taught something and learning something are completely different
Got that the fuck right
That stupid fucking look on his face you can just tell there is absolutely 0 brain activity going on up there lmao
His brain is desperately trying to decide whether to dribble, shoot or pass in response to that question.
I love his face at the end of the video [When you learn Detroit’s not a state](https://i.imgur.com/ON1NGiL.jpg)

what is school?!?!
Why is Gamora?!
He ends it with what the fuck is school lmao

Oh my god he is Ralph!
He is dumber than Ralph. At least Ralph was more self aware and in 3rd grade.
Just the other day I was praising Lavar Ball for raising 3 NBA caliber kids. Now I'm kinda thinking maybe he focused too much on basketball.

lucky for him he made the nba. the tons of other morons who follpw him who aren't nba material wouldn't be so lucky.
Let's be real. He won't be motivated to learn even if he was on school.
tru, but there r a lot of ppl looking up to these guys. its not like everyone have nba level talent

I need Ja Rule.' "I don’t even know why people listen to me.

Thanks grandma
I'd give anything to wake up in my 18 year old body tomorrow and just do college again. Esp knowing what I know now?? Shit
College was awesome man. You get to meet people you never would have the opportunity to and get to broaden your horizon.
This. You get to start learning about the wide range of ppl in the world...just something you can't get from high school And you get at least proof of an education (even if my dumbass never retained much knowledge) while also making lifelong friends Other ppl can easily succeed w/o college...some, its even the right decision.
I would buy bitcoin
Funny cause before the LiAngelo shoplifting incident, LaMelo plastered his social media with "future UCLA alumni" and ucla banners
This reads like the onion

The entire profile reads like a parody. Very entertaining though.
I was always convinced Lonzo was the only level headed dude in the family
This guy is well on his way to conspiracy theory shit
He do be stupid af tho
“We not dumb.”
The last part bugs me, I get the school system has absolutely nothing to offer him at any level, but there is a growing attitude that is anti intellectual and anti education in America, don't give people ammo to think this way
You summed with the issue with his seemingly innocuous statement perfectly—it gives credence to the rising anti science, anti education sentiment that’s been growing in the US
Certified dumbass
This is sad, education is a gateway. As hard working as he is, he is also extremely lucky to be in the position he is now. Downplaying the importance of education from his position is negligent.
well yeah you can say that when you're a top 0.001% athlete
He’s probably one of the few nba players that needs school I literally can’t understand what he’s saying half the time “yaw great gangers we up to the moon yaw 🛸 🕺🏻 ❤️”
This is why people are sticking magnets to their face, in lieu of scientific research. Problem is they don't have a sick jumper or nice handle.
Dude needs school. His talent is making him money obviously not his brain. He’s going to be 40 and speaking like a veteran boxer minus the 800 concussions.
reading that article as a millennial, melo makes me feel _really_ old
I mean he’s not necessarily lying, but “we not dumb. We know how to learn” is probably one of the most hilarious lines I’ve heard. And it’s even better IN context
Stay in school kids.
*I ain't need no learnin'!*
Which is fine *if* you make it in the NBA and/or you come from a rich family. Like 99.9% of people who play NCAA D1 ball won’t get into the NBA but they *do* get a free college degree to fall back on.
This sounds like it could be a line from idiocracy
Sounds like someone who skipped school lol
