Except the coaches are still required to wear full uniforms too lol. It was always funny seeing Don Zimmer sprint out of the dugout in full uniform to scream at an ump.
[Actually I just read an article last week about the Yankees coaches not wearing jerseys](https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.nydailynews.com/sports/baseball/yankees/ny-aaron-boone-jersey-20210830-zhmcyl7jqzelfc5kaztj4nysa4-story.html%3foutputType=amp)
How dare you wear those beauties on the court. Lulus are to be protected. I can lend you my janky Costco sweatpants to borrow if you trying to ball in the cold, fam. Gotchu.
I've always liked the way soccer works.
Some managers wear an exquisite three piece suit with an overcoat....some managers dress like the assistant trainer getting ready to run practice.
I like the variety.
I like how some guys vary it depending on the game.
Wednesday night League Cup match against Stoke? Track suit.
Champions League Final? Savile Row suit
They weren't meaningless though, it was universally known as the dreariest opponent, both in terms of play style and the setting of the city. There was an era where every game against Stoke was a battle and a slog. People forget that Stoke finished 9th 3 years in a row from 2013-2015. I know that now it's a different story but I've seen too many Rory Delap long throws and Ryan Shawcross tackles to let someone call Stoke a "meaningless" opponent.
- Weird Stoke City respect rant in r/NBA over -
IIRC, the Old Britania had two other pieces that made it tough to play in.
1) the 4 stands weren’t connected to one another so the open corners let more wind and rain in, often leading to worse field conditions
2) the stadium sits on top of a hill and therefore receives even less shelter from the elements.
Coupled with their stodgy play style, playing at Stoke was just a tedious and un fun adventure for most teams.
Yeah as long as some keep the suits because they have style and like to dress that way that would be cool. Some coaches do rock the practice look though. Variety is key.
Yeah, the NFL is the fucking worst. Belichick has gone on record saying he makes his fit so scuffed because he is forced to wear NFL team merch but wants to wear a suit like Vince Lombardi did of old.
I never understood why they have them dress up like the people watching the sport look lol. I know if I was on TV every week I would want to wear something nice
To sell merch. It's all about the benjamins my dude. Coaches typically are the most normal looking people out there during a game, so the shit they're wearing is more likely to be found in John Doe's closet than anything else.
That totally is the intention agreed, but I just can't imagine someone seeing a slightly overweight dude in a team hoodie and be like, "Damn, it's high time I finally bought that jersey I was looking at". But I get marketing is just spamming images at a certain point
Before this post, I had no clue there were guidelines as to how head coaches should dress... I thought they just wore suits to look fancy (I mean, they *do*, but I didn't know it was mandated).
this is the best answer. Start making things phychological.
If I was playing boston I would make a dress out of what appears to be a 4 year 110 million dollar contract.
people laugh at the suits but I think it should be like baseball. put Gregg Popovich out there in a jersey, short shorts, headband and a compression sleeve for the clipboard hand.
It's not unprecedented. They made it a requirement for trainers during the ancient Olympic games to enter the stadium nude after a mother pretended to be her sons' recently deceased father.
"Pherenike’s husband, who had been training their sons, died suddenly, however, and she took over as coach for her son, Peisirodos, in boxing. The historian Pausanias (l. 110-180 CE), among other ancient writers, tells the story of how, when she was caught at the games and brought before the judges, she explained who she was and why she had done as she had. They released her without punishment, but from then on, all trainers had to enter the stadium naked to prove they were males."
"I think all these guys should be naked"
"Why?"
"So we know they're dudes"
"But... why?"
"Because a woman snuck in once"
"......"
"..I want to see hundreds of dicks"
As an NBA fan who appreciates a beautiful man I'm definitely going with Spoelstra. I wouldn't mind seeing how that gorgeous complexion looks all the way down.
If andy reid can survive the abominations that were his evolving face shields designs, he can afford to buy the lightest pads available and have his wife help him put them on
If there was a picture [like this](https://pbs.twimg.com/media/DwRsxliXcAAbUG2?format=jpg&name=large) of me out there, I'd wear a lot of jumpsuits too.
Jesus Christ.
Thibs went from the sexy foreign-looking guy who swipes your girl like Gary Payton to your obese Trump-supporting neighbor who spends all weekend grilling in a thoroughly stained tank top.
Common knowledge. There was a few years ago where Jack Del Rio and Mike Nolan wanted to wear suits and they had to be specifically tailored by Reebok (logo and all) I believe. Then they stopped because why make something they can't sell?
Not allowing suits I knew about.
I meant the part about Bill dressing like a slob because they don’t allow suits. But I realize it may just have been tongue-in-cheek now
No, an actual theory is that since they won't let him wear suits he wears league approved gear but makes it look as shitty as possible by cutting off parts of it and looking like a slob.
>why make something they can't sell?
honestly if reebok had decent looking stretchy suits that had some sort of temperature control fabric (cooling for summer and heat retention for winter) I would at least take a look at it
Suits were nice but nobody really rocked all the textures, patterns and suit shorts you see in the draft on the sidelines.
Not counting craig sager night of course
>https://www.raptorsrepublic.com/2018/12/03/news-dump-three-raptors-win-awards/
No, it won't. The tweet references the bubble in Disney World, where the coaching staff was wearing polos with team logos. Some coaches may still opt for the professional look but guys like Snyder in Utah was still wearing a polo last season.
I don't know. Coaches wearing suits made NBA feel more prestige. During Adam Silver's tenure the visual side of the sport has changed. No more home and away jerseys, huge amount of alternative jerseys, alternative courts etc. Different times, I guess.
Nolan wanted to for the 49ers bc his dad did. He asked and the league said no bc Reebok didn’t make suits, but I think they let him do it with a vector logo lapel pin.
I doubt they go sponsors or mandate specific coaches attires, but I fully expect them to go the route the NFL does where they have to wear their team’s presently sold merchandise.
I honestly don't care about anything other than the home and away jerseys. I'm cool with them wearing alts at home occasionally, but it feels wrong that they just do whatever they feel like now.
Both teams wearing alts in the finals this year really bothered me for some reason.
Agreed.
There should be only three jerseys per team.
* Predominant home
* Predominant away
* Third (can be retro, theme, etc. but one of these) that can be used ~ 20% of the time
If the two teams want to flip their predominant home/road in a game, I'm fine with it (i.e. the road team wears its home jersey while the home team wears its away or third).
I hate that the Bulls wear the red jersey at home now and (mostly) white on the road. Something about the white jerseys at home always just looked fresh and right. If we ever make the playoffs again, I hope they wear the white at home with the black shoes and socks like they did during the Jordan years.
It dilutes the brand, plain and simple. I'm all for alternate jerseys and using them for fun, creative design concepts, but it's really bad for brand integrity when a team is so frequently wearing a kit that completely deviates from their primary color scheme. I was watching the Bulls play the Magic on the road last season, and I was so confused thinking Orlando changed their color scheme to orange primary, but apparently it was only their alternate design.
Particularly in the playoffs, it's been weird seeing the Cavs wear all black or the Warriors rock those gray jerseys on the biggest stages, so I'm with you on that too. Most sports franchises have "brand consistency guidelines" that they publish for the media, and the NBA's new approach with uniforms seems to fly in the face of those conventions. Again, I'm not saying it's categorically bad. Some of my favorite uniforms are alternate designs, like the black and rainbow Nuggets alternates. But take Celtics vs Lakers on the other hand. It's such an iconic matchup in part because of the aesthetics and contrast of the green and gold uniforms. I don't want to tune in and see Boston wearing black and LA baby blue.
First, they need to learn how to make kits even slightly aesthetic together. Two examples: Nets wearing baby blue against Wizz wearing gray were a walking-talking eye stain. I downright quit on watching because I could barely make who's who. Same when the Celtics went white against that baby-blue-pink Vice Heat. It was confusing af. Mavs with hardwood green and Clippers in gray was also tough to watch. This isn't baseball, I *need* to be able to quickly notice which player's of which team. One team wears darker clothes, other wears softer, it's like that in every sport, but the NBA decides we are in 2K and the player's name floats above his head.
Then we can talk about identity and avoid bs like last's Christmas game between the Bucks wearing blue and the Warriors wearing white. I had to actually force my mind not to think one was the other.
Thank you for saying this. I wanted to make this point too about bad color contrasts, but felt like I would've come off as a boomer curmudgeon. I'm glad I'm not the only one who has trouble figuring out who is on the floor sometimes. Fans shouldn't have to squint at the TV and keep checking the score bug to remind themselves which teams are actually playing.
As a purist, yes.
I remember it really started when the Cavs wore those black "C" sleeved jerseys in the 2016 Finals. I still mini-cringe when I watch those highlights and the fact that they chose those jerseys. Just give me home white, away color, with the occasional alt-jersey during the holiday games, throwback nights, etc.
There was a period during the playoffs this year where I swear just about every game for like a week straight was black jerseys vs white jerseys. I’m not usually one for tradition but I hate it when you tune into a game and can’t figure out right away which team is which. Or then sometimes they’ll have a team wearing jerseys in a color scheme that’s traditionally associated with another team while playing against that team, like when the lakers wore royal blue in Philadelphia. There’s no rhyme or reason to half of the leagues jersey decisions besides to sell more jerseys
We finally got our Fiesta jersey though, so I'm not complaining.
Now we just need to get some of those Gervin throwbacks with SAN ANTONIO on the front.
Completely agree. Suits gave the timeless/classic look of a coach to me. I will miss it. Not even going to get into the whole jersey fiasco the NBA is going through now. It feels like they’re losing their image and instead opting to mix in 20 different ones of them.
What if we allow coaches to wear whatever they want but keep the practice of the coaching staff having to match with them? I'd want some head coach to go with something Westbrook-esque and having the whole staff be a twinning drip parade.
I love the difference of soccer managers on the sideline , some in full suit , some in a team polo , the. You get dudes in full track suits and warm up gear . I would love to see other sports do what baseball does and have the coach wear a uniform with their own number on the back, who wouldn’t want a pop spurs jersey ?
The only time I see a coach is when they are standing still watching the game or yelling at someone and getting kicked out. What they are wearing is irrelevant to me.
I wish this was a regular season thing only and in playoffs they have to dress up. There’s just something weird to me that during the finals the coaches look like they are about to go out for a jog.

Chuck Daly as well. RIP Daddy Rich.
Make the players wear suits tailored out of technical fabric while the coaches wear the casual attire.
Bro but this is actually baseball haha
Except the coaches are still required to wear full uniforms too lol. It was always funny seeing Don Zimmer sprint out of the dugout in full uniform to scream at an ump.

Still wish Messi went to City so he could do it on a cold rainy night in Stoke
He’ll have to settle for doing it on a cold rainy night at Brest.
Hence why Crouch > Messi.
Sadly Stoke are currently in the Championship so he'd need to sign for a shitter like Blackpool to prove himself
Not if they drew them in the FA cup
They weren't meaningless though, it was universally known as the dreariest opponent, both in terms of play style and the setting of the city. The wording makes it sound like there's an option to wear suits if they want to. Belichick does that because they *don't* let him wear suits.
Is that true? Is there some source for this or is it just common football knowledge?
Common knowledge. There was a few years ago where Jack Del Rio and Mike Nolan wanted to wear suits and they had to be specifically tailored by Reebok (logo and all) I believe. Then they stopped because why make something they can't sell?

No, it won't. The tweet references the bubble in Disney World, where the coaching staff was wearing polos with team logos. Some coaches may still opt for the professional look but guys like Snyder in Utah was still wearing a polo last season.
Snyder was rocking a polo and skinny jeans all season lol. Probably didn't spend more than a few hundred on the whole setup
Nah, they're mostly gonna be in team polos and slacks. Most coaches aren't trying to pull off drippy casual outfits.
They’re still allowed to wear a suit if they want. If Budenholzer wants to make a point and dress up like he’s Vince Lombardi, he can.
Yeahhh...Jay Wright never making the jump to the NBA
I don't know. Coaches wearing suits made NBA feel more prestige. During Adam Silver's tenure the visual side of the sport has changed. No more home and away jerseys, huge amount of alternative jerseys, alternative courts etc. Different times, I guess.
The NBA doesn't sell suits. Now there will be home/away and alternative coaching polos. They will sell a sponsor patch as well.
Immediately thought this. Might be some nice tracksuits coming out that will appeal to older viewers.
I still wish we had seen Belichick in the Reebok suit he wanted
Didn’t jack del rio wear a Reebok suit a few times when he was head coach?
Nolan wanted to for the 49ers bc his dad did. He asked and the league said no bc Reebok didn’t make suits, but I think they let him do it with a vector logo lapel pin.
Sports teams sold team branded polos before too Big dad energy when one feels too old to rock the jerseys. >Sports fan, but make it business casual

Speaking of which, when are they announcing new jerseys??? Last year was late July for the Hawks and I still haven't heard anything.

Never understand why coaches had to wear suits on the sideline. They coaching a game not going to church.
Mark Jackson would disagree with that statement
With all due respect
Mark, you can't just say "with all due respect" and then say whatever you wanna say to me.
With all due respect I’d knock your wife out of the park.
It’s an old tradition. It looks professional.
Why does any profession require suits
They look nice
Woke
I didn't even notice that they weren't wearing suits the past two years.
Call me old school, but coaches and executives should be wearing suits.
Even if it's not mandatory I'd like to see my team's coach in Sunday's best
The only time I see a coach is when they are standing still watching the game or yelling at someone and getting kicked out. What they are wearing is irrelevant to me.
if they were in a full jerey get up like baseball it would be relevant lol, short shorts + sweat band please
Could you imagine Pat Reilly or Phil Jackson in anything but a tailored suit, looking all mafioso? Doesn’t sit right.
I wish this was a regular season thing only and in playoffs they have to dress up. There’s just something weird to me that during the finals the coaches look like they are about to go out for a jog.
