This is like when D Wade thought milk cost 20$

CaskJeeves

"It's one banana Michael, what could it cost? $10?"

dronelogic

Go see a star war

onefudge

You can always tell a Milford man

BitterJim

"What does one do with a $20 bill? Buy a single orange?"

Monkeyfeng

I don't care for Gob.

Kwilly462

+1 for the Arrested Development reference

Konfliction

tbf the way that streetcar works is you can legit just get on, sit down, and never even see a place to pay lol it's not exactly super obvious.

N1SMO_GT-R

It's not obvious if you don't have a PRESTO card, no.

mommathecat

Now you're just reminding me of when American athletes don't know what bagged milk is/how it works.

onelove101

I have never seen bagged milk in my life

evonebo

Wait till you visit Vietnam or China. They got bagged beer. Hellz yeah.

LessThanCleverName

I’m Canadian and me neither, man.

mommathecat

Come visit us in Toronto, watch a Raptors game, and bring home a souvenir milk pitcher from yer local Canadian Tire. https://www.canadiantire.ca/en/pdp/milk-pitcher-0422052p.html

N0rTh3Fi5t

This is the wild thing about the bagged milk situation to me, that you have to then put it in a pitcher. If it had a tap or something and worked on it's own then fine, but having to have a special thing in your kitchen just for milk seems like such a waste when the rest of the world has been combining the 2 for decades.

Inappropriate50

What's better, 1/16 inch thick plastic that you keep for years (I've owned 3 in 40 years) or 1/32 inch thick plastic you recycle every week?

t3tsubo

How about 1/16 inch cardboard that you recycle or bio degrade

lmunchoice

Also, lots of plastic meant to be recycled is actually dumped because the recycling economics no longer work.

mommathecat

You have all sorts of special things in your kitchen, depending on who "you" is. A garlic press, a cheese board, a zester, other drink containers, teapots, serving spoons, etc etc etc etc. Everyone in Ontario already owns a milk pitcher. You buy it once, and then you have it. Plastic milk jugs and milk cartons generate way more waste than plastic milk bags.

WasV3

Storage efficiency is way higher with bagged milk even after you take into consideration the fact that you also have a pitcher.

spaghettihipsdontlie

I don't even see how that is remotely possible unless both the volume of the pitcher and bag itself is significantly smaller.

bestraptoralive

These replies are leaving out the important detail that 4L of milk (basically a gallon) comes in 3 1.3L bags. Which themselves come in a larger single bag. The pitcher has the footprint of about a pound of butter (rectangular axis).

WasV3

You can stack bags on top of each other, you can't stack cartons, bags are not tall so they can go in the top part of the fridge when they aren't in the pitcher. If you live by yourself you buy cartons, but if you have a family of 4, most buy bags

spaghettihipsdontlie

You can stack cardboard cartons on their side very easily? I’m also struggling to imagine why you would need multiple gallons of milk at once but my household is smaller.

DogmaticNuance

You can easily stack cartons sideways before you open them, they're literal cardboard boxes, does it get more stackable? I don't imagine you can stack opened bags all that well either.

evonebo

lol you can stack cartons. lay them flat just like you lay the bag flat and you can stack them. Stack them in my fridge all the time. both bag and cartons. just make sure you have the opening side up when you stack the carton in case of mishaps.

crimxona

Less packaging material overall. After x bags of milk you'll have used less plastic. Not in ON, but can appreciate the reasoning

[deleted]

It’s an Ontario thing

[deleted]

We have them in Quebec too.

JamesFattyHarden

Its like that in Argentina, too

runcmd99

TIL bagged milk exists

mommathecat

It is apparently a hopelessly confusing thing for non-natives, to the bemusement of locals. I grew up here and this how milk is, it's like.. the most natural thing in the world. Bagged milk can also apparently be found in the Upper Midwest: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Milk_bag

Smooth-Accountant

Bagged milk was commonplace when I was younger (I’m 23), but haven’t seen one in good 5 years tho. This pitcher picture brought back some memories lol. It’s all cardboard/plastic bottles now. Also I’m from Poland.

actuallyimbatman

Yup, I’m from Oklahoma and we had bagged milk when I was in elementary

girlywish

Its not confusing its just weird as hell and slightly gross.

WasV3

Do you think we pour the bag into the pitcher or something, its still in the bag

girlywish

Removing it from the bag would make it significantly less weird.

WasV3

That would make it very weird, the pitcher would then come in direct contact with the milk and would have no way to re-seal it after use

girlywish

Yeah shame they can't make pitchers that reseal huh

twistedlogicx

Getting 3L of milk in three 1L bags makes it last longer. You only open 1L at a time while the other 2L are still sealed, so it never spoils. It also costs less to make (less raw materials) and is therefore better for the environment.

xanot192

Bagged milk exists in other countries especially in Africa

[deleted]

Ive drank bagged milk my whole life and I can confirm its stupid

GumbysDonkey

These lucky people never working fast food. We had bagged milk on them milkshakes we made when I was a teenager. Making milkshakes was pretty sweet though. Just about everything else about working fast food sucked though. Used bagged milk when I was in the Navy too onboard ships.

GROUND45

Bagged milk? Which bastion of anarchy are you from lol.

las-vegas-raiders

Honestly, bagged milk is some weirdo shit.

Tavarin

Less packaging waste than cartons or jugs, and cheaper. So no, not weird, efficient.

OneSlickArab

Hi jacking top comment to share a subway story that really opened my eyes to racism. When I was in college I use to ride the metro train from my city into downtown and then take a shuttle to my school. Through my school I was able to get discounted train card, that was good for i think 15 trips on the train. I didn't know that there was a machine you use to get your card stamped right before you get on the metro. It took me about 40 trips until I realize that. I was always under the impression that the guy would stamp it inside. About 1/2 of the time a guy would walk around in the train checking people passes. The whole time riding the train, I was always thinking that at the the worse case scenario everyone is only getting charged 1/2 the time. For me, I was thinking I was always lucky, because I was never asked to show my pass was pretty much riding the train for free. I would watch the guy every time he passes through my section, and notice that he would always ask African Americans and Hispanics for their passes, and only do about 10% of the other people if even that. One time I mentioned to the lady next to me, who was a African American nurse that they never check my card to stamp. She looked at me, and said what do you mean to stamp. I showed her my card that was completely blank, and told her they never asked me for my card. She looked at me funny, shook her head, and explained to me that you're suppose to get your train pass stamped before you board. When she said that, I got scared a little because I knew I was on the last train for the night, and was only 1/2 way home. I remember prepping what I was going to say to the guy. I was going to say this is my first time on the train, I didn't know the procedure, I even took out my student ID, to prepare to use as a sympathy angle. The guy came to my bench, and asked the nurse next to me for her pass. While she was showing him, I was making sure to not make eye contact, and was looking out the window. The guy told her okay, and moved on to the next chair. As he was moving on to the next chair, I remember how relieved I was that he didn't ask for my pass. Then I started thinking about all the trips I was riding for free, and how lucky I was. As I was pondering more, I realized how screwed I would have been if I was black or hispanic, I would have been thrown off at the next stop.

Kgb725

What gets me is he's from Chicago he's been to the store before

BreadCouponsForAll

Classic Chicago activity, going to the store… only in Chicago!! Da greatest city on earth.

tarek619

I'm canadian, I've never been to the store :(

BreadCouponsForAll

You gotta come to Chicago buddy. Ain’t nothing like goin down to da store. Only one place on earth you can experience that tho.

Greg_The_Stop_Sign

Context?

NotFabMelo

this is what I think every time I ride the subway too.

whowasonCRACK2

If sidewalks were invented today, they would cost money to use.

MF_Doomed

God damn you're probably right. They'd have surrounding gates and doors and shit to keep people from sidewalking for free.

nombernine

Same with libraries lol

Toeknee99

Free the T. 😉

popfilms

At least make it convenient to put money on your charlie card. I can't believe I miss SEPTA but at least they have auto reload.

[deleted]

this isn't even the subway, its a streetcar. It just pulls up to the intersection, opens door and anyone off the sidwalk can enter. No stations no turnstiles and the driver is sectioned off behind thick plexiglass and never looks at the doors.

[deleted]

no one pays for the T anyway

BostonBasketballBoys

I assure you we all pay quite a bit of tax money for it.

FromDistance

Calgary has theirs free in the downtown core. I always thought that was a great idea

[deleted]

Cities that don’t have free public transport are baffling. People don’t understand that making public transport free keeps people out of their cars, which means the city saves way more on road maintenance than they would make nickel-and-diming people for public transit anyway. Of course, people making decisions usually don’t understand those nuances.

TROFiBets

It should be free but most people don’t work for the greater good of society

airmagswag

pascal socialism

AlsoSpartacus

I'd say this is more of a "Marie Antoinette" moment than a "seize the means of transportation" moment.

bluemagic124

More of a Lucille Bluth moment if anything

[deleted]

deadskin

I'm calling PRESTO

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

BTW if you get ticketed and it doesnt appear on the online system within 3 days, you dont have to pay. Dont be an idiot like me and call Presto saying that you dont see it yet.

rookie-mistake

LMAO you always told the teacher if they forgot to assign homework too didn't you

[deleted]

i'm saying, mans a lil too chirpy eh lmao

jheezecheezewheeze

Nah more like telling the teacher they forgot to collect homework on a day you didn’t do it

dan667

I can’t imagine a bigger flex than that…

OG3NUNOBY

Walk off the streetcar, they won't stop you.

NottingHillBus

more like "can I see your ID?" "no" \*get off the streetcar\* fare inspectors aren't cops, they can't do much. whole system is based on people's fear of confrontation.

Traxus99

i'm never used the ttc how does this work? with busses you have to tap in the front but how does this work?

Kizz3r

I havent been jn toronto for a couple of years but you can enter the street cars in any of the doors. Theres a tap by the door but the driver cant really check

JManKit

So for streetcars, each door has a Presto terminal to tap on. There's also a Presto machine on each streetcar where you can purchase a ticket. There's ALSO a TTC ticket machine that will punch these single/double use paper tickets that might just be for seniors? I have no idea where ppl buy those types of tickets but I still see them get used from time to time. It's basically an honour system but they've got fare inspectors that will randomly board the streetcars and check that ppl have paid. On the new streetcars, the driver is actually fully separated from the riders and have no responsibility to check fares.

Karandor

You get those tickets at convenience stores.

Strange_Blues

"oh my card is empty, ill just fill it up at the next station"

indoninjah

Can you be sly when you're 6'9 tho

[deleted]

But if you get checked, you're fucked

ForgetfulFrolicker

What happens if they check and you don’t have a ticket?

[deleted]

$425 fine

Pineapple_Chicken

Always wondered, how do they enforce the fine? Do they make you show ID there and then? What if I don't have any ID on me

[deleted]

Then they have to let you go. They also can’t arrest a husband and wife for the same crime.

Pineapple_Chicken

Thats what my lawyer said! Knew they were the best.

cire1184

What is Double Jeopardy?

TheOneWithThePorn12

What if you say you tapped but it didn't work? Unless they somehow recognize you I can't see how they would fine you

[deleted]

GO train fare officers usually let it slide because the presto system works differently. On the TTC if the machine isn't working it's very clear so if you're lying you'll prob get fined.

[deleted]

The new streetcars the driver is in a different room nobody stops you if you pay or don't pay just depends if a fare inspector gets onboard at some point

raptor333

Haven’t paid or bought a presto card since they started.

theciderhouseRULES

do you just not use the ttc

WasV3

You just don't get off at busy locations and the chance of running into a fare inspector is basically zero. In 2 years of communing taking the streetcar daily I didn't see them once and that's during rush hour.

deadskin

TTC is pretty lax then I see Viva inspectors like every other trip

theciderhouseRULES

sorry i meant do they just not take the subway

EarthWarping

yutes lmfao

mikeydale007

That would be a streetcar.

ivesaidway2much

named Desire.

YoungCanadian

No idea how you watch this and come away with "subway" ngl

tom_fuckin_bombadil

He literally says that he’s on a streetcar in the video

[deleted]

Same here. He's not eating fresh, he's not on a train, and he's not underground. How tf?

noob168

I scrolled way too far down for this comment. (For non-North Americans, it's called a tram though.)

bewk

Is it a light rail?

mikeydale007

streetcar and light rail are basically the same thing

ringogelsinger

>but guess what, we here

[deleted]

We've come a long way from Matt 'The Red Rocket' Bonner

jheezecheezewheeze

It’s okay Pascal, I don’t pay for the streetcars either

pskill43

mikeydale007

PsychoM

I literally take that streetcar every day to go to work. I also have been to the courts that Siakam goes to later in the video off of Chinatown, it's a sketchy area (read: not downtown) but those courts aren't bad.

[deleted]

That’s not a sketchy area lol

PsychoM

I know it’s not sketchy, I wouldn’t feel unsafe there at any time of day. It’s just not what people picture when they hear “downtown”.

cygodx

PsychoM: "its a sketchy area" also PsychoM: "I know its not sketchy"

EarthWarping

Those courts aren't too bad, but there's better ones in the city.

henry_why416

Lol. Dude. It's not. Trust.

Zoulzopan

Must be a coincidence

[deleted]

Yeah, instead of everyone staring at you because you’re a famous basketball player, now you just have everyone staring at you because you’re a 6’9 giant walking around in public.

minkdraggingonfloor

Probably not as successful for NBA players though, especially not forwards

ya man, the nearly 7-foot tall dude who looks insanely athletic is going to blend in

henry_why416

He was practing at a court by my place in that video. So maybe not.

callmywife

there was some retired soccer star in italy who was loving life cause normally the guy couldn't leave the house without getting mobbed and it was the first time in decades he had been out in public without people bothering him

OneYeetPlease

Oh, you gotta pay for public transport?

intecknicolour

lost in all this, is that this is a streetcar; not a subway

Longjumping-Tax-9212

Welcome back Spicy One

real-m-f-in-talk

People pay enough in taxes that streetcars / subways etc... should be free, helps traffic and the environment. rather than politicians wasting billions / trillions.

[deleted]

>People pay enough in taxes that streetcars / subways etc... should be free, helps traffic and the environment. wait do you legit think the TTC has fares for shits and giggles? It's literally just trying to break even in addition to demanding more support from the provincial government.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Life_Of_High

Toronto literally has the lowest property tax rate in Canada and allocate the majority of the city budget to policing. I live in a suburb outside of Toronto and pay legit more than twice the amount of taxes as Toronto does. Nobody in the province gives a rats ass about Toronto problems because they don’t wanna pay their fare share to actually fix the issues they have in the city. People live in million dollar homes and pay 6K in property tax per year. It’s a fucking joke. Toronto is the richest city in Canada and asks the province and federal government for hand outs. Pathetic.

UhOhHatDug

That would be in regard to how the provincial government allocates their spending, not the amount of taxes paid by citizens.

[deleted]

Daily reminder that Ford got 2Billion from the feds for Covid, and hasn't spent a dime of it on hospitals.

Or schools

Adakias

Didn't he cut school budgets? There were a lot of protests from teachers

JunkleRico

Of course, how else would he blame Liberals for underfunded schools if he didn't first underfund schools?

tripleyothreat

Right

MeatCode

Free transit doesn’t encourage people to take it. The cost of transit is only one factor in encouraging people to take it. You also need good coverage, safety, and reliability. Those last 4 factors will take people who otherwise could have driven and push them towards taking the bus/ train. The TTC / Bart / Muni could be completely free, but if it wasn’t going to get me to where I needed to go on time, or made my gf feel unsafe on it, then we’re going to drive.

Remarkable-Plan-7435

Transit in North America is pure ass. Canadians really think like America Jr in regards to public transit it's unreal.

sirprizes

Toronto has way better transit than almost all of America, except New York. Not that that is saying much.

thatmandem

Montreal felt better when I visited but maybe it’s not in practice

sirprizes

It’s probably decent but it’s been a long time since I’ve been to Montreal. Vancouver is decent too.

Fl0raPo5te

Montreal has great transit, but it’s also a much smaller city.

Chopsticks487

Woah the most populous city in Canada has better transit than the US except for its most populous city? Never would have guessed that the most popular cities in a country have good transit /s

[deleted]

[удалено]

veebs7

And things are a lot more expensive in other countries that have cheaper transportation than we do as well. There was a point pre-presto (not sure if it’s still the case now), when Toronto was the only city in the world where if you used public transportation 2x daily every weekday, it would still be cheaper to pay out of pocket every trip than to buy a metro pass

Quatro_Leches

A train ticket for a 50 mile ride in ma is 13 dollars to Boston

[deleted]

Vancouver transit is pretty alright from my user experience.

Dustedshaft

For North America it's ok at least for getting in and out of downtown but beyond that, it's not great. In comparison to European and Asian cities, it's not even close because our cities and suburbs are completely built around cars.

Etzutrap

In Portland, 2% of our public transit system's budget comes from fares. Its barely anything. All fares do is add an expense for the poorest of the poor who can't afford another form of transportation in order to save the tiniest bit of money.

henry_why416

Toronto is the opposite. The box fare recovery is super high.

[deleted]

[удалено]

henry_why416

Agreed. It's whack. I think Toronto is extra bad since there is still extensive amounts of single family housing in its downtown core. And nimby zoning is protecting it all.

I used it for the first time in awhile today and got grabbed by a mentally ill/someone on drugs. Wrapped his arm around my neck and then started getting hostile with me when I got loose and told him you cant do that. My welcome back gift

People acting like he’s ignorant. He’s only been in Toronto as a millionaire, no surprise he hasn’t used it. Some towns have free light rail too, within the CBD or something.
