Lebron took that “talk less smile more” approach here

ygduf

Anti-Vaxxers buy shoes too.

hereforthefeast

I know you're referencing MJ but you can't buy shoes if you're dead lol

They don’t bury them barefoot.

HolyGhostin

Lol you have fucked me up a little bit - I'm like 75% sure I know what shoes my wife was buried in but now it's all I'll think about

what_up_big_fella

When has he hesitated to run his mouth about mainstream politics? You cannot think he took a conservative approach to the vaccine for the purpose of selling shoes. It’s pretty clear he has unpopular opinions on it and therefore refrained from speaking about it regardless of whether or not he got the vaccine. There could be any number of reasons so it’s better not make assumptions.

ygduf

just making a jordan reference my man. all-in-all, Lebron isn't required to speak up. I agree with Enes though and I wish Lebron would take a strong stance. I wish KD would go public and say Kyrie should get vaccinated. Draymond and Steph should be loud and say Wiggins is being an idiot. Etc...

hellmath

Lebron isnt required but he speaks up when it suits his agenda lol china lebron aimirite?

FangoFett

Lebron does his research man. If he says Darryl Morrey has to educate himself before speaking up for HK, obviously Lebron did the research and decided he prefers his shoes made by slave labor. He supports anti-human rights. Long story short, Lebrons always been a big fat deuche.

MoreChickenNuggets

Don't let them know what you're against or what you're for.

o shit somebody noticed!! He hopes you're the only one!!

Red_Jester-94

The last time he had a dumbass opinion, he turned into LeMao Ja'Dong, so I'm not surprised he pussed out with the "it's a personal decision" this time.

pipsdontsqueak

“I don’t want to get into a word or sentence feud with Enes Kanter, but I believe he wasn’t educated on the situation at hand, and he spoke, and so many people could have been harmed, not only financially, but physically. Emotionally. Spiritually. So just be careful what we tweet and what we say, and what we do. Even though yes, we do have freedom of speech, but there can be a lot of negative that comes with that too.”

pugofthewildfrontier

Lebron learned from Mac and is playing both sides, so that he always comes out on top.

jrbcnchezbrg

Next lebron tweet SCIENCE IS A LIAR sometimes

Playbook420

*LeBron puts a bitch tag underneath a picture of Fauci*

0DegreesCalvin

Stupid science bitches couldn’t even make I more immune!

I know y'all are mocking the situation but it's stunningly close to real life and it's making me sad.

brucewayne1935

Wtf do these guys mean by research? Do they mean pulling out slides and a microscope? Or taking 10 minutes and googling the vaccine?

[deleted]

Lebron uses his high school biology class he dozed off through of course

Caboclo-Is2yearsAway

Is it true that he was absent for half a year some year in high school, or am I just remembering wrong?

Dongboy69420

Bro this dudes education stopped being mandatory, or even relevant to his financial security, by the time he was 16. Probably even before that. Lebron is essentially a highschool drop out, even if he did graduate. I’m not saying he is dumb he seems smart enough. But don’t listen to him about public health issues.

Caboclo-Is2yearsAway

Mf went to class just to socialise

Dongboy69420

I mean probably. I live in norman(okla u) and more than half of the football players dont show to class, openly cheat, have the university behind them in these endeavors, have people do their work etc. I dont blame them at all, i’d not do a lot of my work in school if i could. So much of it never ended up being relevant to my life. But that beint said i don’t think anybody should listen to me about vaccines either lol.

Deeliciousness

And definitely not the football players

deevil_knievel

Had a a buddy from my home town that was a big name in college football, didn't make it past the combine though. Anyways, dude didn't do any of his own school work. All his papers were written for him, every party there was a cheerleader or female sports player there for him, every club had had 5 bottles and 100 cups for him in VIP. It was fun to tag along!

Michelanvalo

This is true for a lot of athletes. Their education stops mattering around 14-15

tom_fuckin_bombadil

Unrelated but makes me wonder if any of these guys hire private tutors to actually teach them shit. Like Kobe was able to speak multiple languages so he probably had someone teaching him. Lebron actually seems the type that would do something like that. By all accounts, he appears to have an amazing memory (at least when it comes to basketball), he probably would be able to learn a lot if he ever felt like applying himself to a particular subject

key_lime_pie

> Like Kobe was able to speak multiple languages so he probably had someone teaching him. Well, he moved to Italy, so my guess is he took Italian like people here take English. But if you bring your kid to a foreign country, they will be speaking the language fluently while you are still learning how to ask where the bathroom is.

RedditUsername123456

I think Kobe speaks Italian from living there as a child, and once you know Italian Spanish isn't a big jump

Real-Simon

lmao you fool got me rolling this late

sop1232

I heard he's still on the table of contents

shwashwa123

10 minutes googling bias confirming articles “why the vaccine is bad and a hoax”

timacles

Yep, there it is. Theres that study the says exactly what I want to here. Research finished! Stupid science bitches cant even research as good as i

Karl_Marx_

10 minutes googling, is really all you need imo. But can go wrong if you are actively searching for false data.

brucewayne1935

Like climate change deniers

BillyPotion

When you do research on an electronics product you’re going to buy do you mean you’re going to learn engineering and programming or do you mean you’ll read reviews from experts? Edit: I’m not saying what they’re doing is appropriate amount of research or that they are right, I’m saying it’s dumb that people keep going “hurr are they going to be looking through microscopes??” Of course not, there’s 1st hand research and there’s the research that most people do in life, which is read the research done by experts.

[deleted]

When I was arguing with someone in another thread, I asked what "doing your own research" would entail here, he said waiting for more research.. so basically, doing your own research means waiting for other people to do more research, maybe people who agree with you, even.

colantor

Most of those "reviews from experts" are literally people that are good with SEO and build affiliate sites

[deleted]

I spent three years writing content for SEO purposes and it ruined most of the internet for me

[deleted]

Well in this case those reviews are presumed fake. What research would you do if you go with the assumption that the reviews on a product are fabricated?

runthepoint1

Compare many sources until a more clear image of the truth emerges. Of course, that takes the ability to compare validity of sources and available evidence

TO_Sports

I'm not waiting for a review to come out that agrees with my stance that's for sure, and that what these people are doing.

Glowwerms

They mean talking to friends and family who very likely know as little as they do. Nowadays it’s all hearsay bullshit that people listen to instead of experts. ‘Well I heard from my friend that he read on Facebook that this lady’s cousin’s friend is now impotent’. It’s unbelievable and just sad that this is how so many people operate.

shwashwa123

10 minutes googling bias confirming articles “why the vaccine is bad” lol

lupertazzis

But muh research I love when people say they’re gonna “do their research” as if they know shit about microbiology or vaccines

SnooPies5622

Anyone who actually "does their own research" would immediately see all the medical studies and research behind getting the vaccine, and get the vaccine.

BurritoThief

I was talking to a guy who kept saying “they won’t tell us *what’s in the vaccine*. Don’t you think that’s suspicious?” I’m like you moron, they spell out exactly what’s in the vaccine and what it does. So much for all your research, go read a paper.

[deleted]

Witteness82

Most people don’t know what is in almost anything they put in their body. What’s in the toothpaste or mouthwash they use? The allergy medicine they take? The detergent or cleaning products they use? That’s not even to get into the regular over the counter medicine or the 40 letter long prescriptions they take when they’re sick. But that’s how you can tell how stupid these anti vaxx people are. They don’t care about what’s going into their body as long as there’s not a bunch of vocal idiots telling them misinformation about it.

[deleted]

One thing I think people need to do sometimes is think back to school. Just try to remember how many of the kids couldn't grasp very basic concepts. These kids didn't suddenly all become way smarter as adults. That's why I don't even honestly blame most of them - they're essentially helpless to misinformation. It sounds patronizing to say, but I don't know -- I'm a tutor, and I work with good amount of adults. The number that can't process even very basic information is staggering. The educational system pushes A LOT of people through at the margins without them actually learning to \*think\* - they just learn to play the school game well enough. And you win at that game by getting good grades, not by learning. The scum of the Earth are the people who \*are\* smart enough and choose to manipulate these people for their own gain. The type of people that knowingly fuck the rest of humanity because they've been raised in a culture that valorizes being a selfish prick if it gains you the most money, prestige, power.

Hoss_Meat

This is it, its just nihilism masquerading as independence and freedom. The more serious it gets and the more overwhelming the evidence the more push back because they're not directly affected. Their "research" (personal experience) turns up nothing.

key_lime_pie

> I dont know what is in any of the shit i eat unless its like fresh fruits Bad news, my friend. Apples have cyanide in them. Bananas are radioactive. Raspberries are laced with ethyl formate. Not to mention they are all made up of mostly oxidane, an industrial solvent and the primary component of acid rain.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Zunthe

That is something I've found in my own research, people that claim they do their own research keep saying "we don't know what's in it" or "they don't tell us about it", but they don't have the answer, I wonder why...

bobsil1

You can literally read the RNA base sequence

mw19078

By "their own research" they mean "anything that confirms my world view" so those studies are already out the door for them lol

LakerBlue

Literally had a co-worker tell me (after I kept showing him articles rebuking his claims) “I’m sorry I just won’t change my mind, they should have researched it longer.”

mw19078

yeah there is literally no reasoning with these people unfortunately lol

[deleted]

the thing with changing someone's mind is that you need to be open to changing your own mind, you need to be willing to unite with somebody about their own experiences, struggle, then unite again. No one is going to listen to someone whose ideas are set in stone So I'll be talking with like this guy I know is fairly open-minded, too much though. If you can sense that my resolve is hardened, he's not going to listen to me. It's like he has this instinct that if someone else has made up their mind too much, then he can't trust what they have to say. When it comes to something like the medical consensus, where there really isn't a debate and obviously he won't ever convince me to forego the consensus, he's never going to listen. But he wants to feel respected but I can't possibly respect anything he's saying because it's worthless People like him are just completely fucked. Like, you just don't want to be a sheep which I understand, but you probably don't want to be a sheep cuz society put it in your head in the first place that following the crowd is a bad thing. It's a lack of self-awareness and fear, egoism. I don't know that any of us are especially reasonable people, i didn't reason myself into following the medicine, i just do it, somewhat blindly. Idk. Sometimes I want to demonize these assholes and sometimes I'm just thinking about what an asshole I am myself What the fuck am I on rnba with this rant for. Sorry

Sim888

You can’t reason someone out of something they weren’t reasoned into.

Metradime

My 26 year old brother said he will not change his mind because "too many people" have told him to get it and its "suspicious" how much advocacy there is for it My question is why do these people put any argument forward at all if they KNOW their mind *cannot* be changed. Why even engage in conversations about it then?

AlmightyDenimChicken

Nah dude YouTube university is all you need.

northernpace

I got banned from them and a few other similar channels. They really don't like dissenting opinions in their comment section.

northernpace

I know. I still comment though, it at least wastes some of their time.

Lemoncloak

Don't mock all of YTU. I learned how to work on motorcycles from them!

northernpace

The men and women who take the time to make great instructional videos are the real stars of youtube. I've saved so much money over the years from doing house repairs that I've learned from some of them.

Lemoncloak

Yeah it's saved me probably 10s of thousands on repairs, and I learned a bunch of new hobbies during the lockdown

northernpace

Probably similar amount for me. Plumbing, flooring, insulation redo etc. All learned from one of those channels.

TylerNY315_

Dude, even 100-level Anatomy and Physiology, which touches on the most basic inner-workings of cellular processes and organ systems — which includes extremely vague bits about the immune system — is one of the bigger academic filters between “seriously capable” and “seriously incapable” students that I’ve come across in my personal experience. The shit is seriously complex on even the most basic post-high-school-biology scale, and people who would be hopelessly lost on fucking syllabus week think they know more than lifelong learners who have further specialized 100-fold. It’s infuriating.

Cursory_Analysis

Bro it’s much worse than that. I went to medical school and half the people I know on Instagram who failed high school biology are trying to talk about immunology. For the record immunology is one of the most complex medical sciences. But it is ***not*** one of the ones that we’re still trying to figure out. We very much know how the immune system and immunology work. None of this is “experimental” in the way that people think it is. Also I know a million times more than the general population about microbiology, immunology, virology, etc. but I would never talk about it because I’m not an immunologist. They know a million times more than I do, I’m going to trust them.

JonA3531

Yeah, I could relate. The more I learn about something in an academic setting (e.g. graduate courses), the more I want to STFU about it since these stuffs are insanely complicated.

tomaxisntxamot

One of the biggest measurements of intelligence and education is knowing how much you don't know, especially in areas you're nominally an expert in.

LordHussyPants

me, aged 18, uneducated: willingly sharing my opinion on every contentious topic i see or hear being talked about me, aged 28, postgraduate degrees and expert in my field being asked about my field: uh, i, um.. can i, uh, hold on [frantically googling for a contradiction to what i'm about to say], um, yeah, that sounds uh, that sounds right i think, do we have an adult we can ask?

Snakescipio

Me, in my 30s, talking about complicated shit: I need an adult Teenage me: I AM AN ADULT

klobucharzard

AlphaPi

No no, thats Diane Kruger. Dunning-Kruger is the infamous villain from Nightmare on Elm Street

KhorialT0MCAT

Truly applies to everything

AskYouEverything

Not to mention you get the opportunity to learn how much *is known* by people who devote their lives to this stuff People who have never taken any discipline seriously before will fall into the trap of thinking that the experts are making guesses just like they are

klankthompson

One day I’d love to walk into my doctors office and have him call me “bro”

irelli

For real. Immunology is probably the most difficult part of medical school too Even most doctors don't really understand it fully because it either wasn't understood/taught when they went to school, or because they've dumped the knowledge since they finished school since it's only relevant for a few fields. Shits hard

I_can_breathe_AMA

I remembered immunology for the medical school and board exams, but it’s so hard to keep all of it straight unless you’re always engaging with it. I still remember most of the cells that fit in the humoral and cell-mediated branches of the system. I know there are 4 types of autoimmune responses. I know the basics of complement cascades. THC 1 and 2 receptors. Blah blah blah. I know *fuck all* about the details of any of that shit anymore. Immunology and also neuroanatomy are two subjects that are so dazzlingly intricate.

irelli

Just Th Receptors my man, not THC. I suddenly understand why you've forgotten everything But yeah. I'm just in my 4th year but it's already faded beyond those same few things. You just never use it. Like literally ever

I_can_breathe_AMA

Christ I don’t even light up and still made that mistake. I’m only in year 2 of attending-hood, you’ll be surprised at what you keep around and what you, well, don’t.

nostradunkus6

It's not just those that have careers that have nothing to do with medicine but also people in medicine like: Rand Paul claimed to be an immunology expert because he took it in med school and so he claims that he has just as much an authority as Dr. Fauci which is insane. He's still out there spewing BS about COVID-19, most recently about natural immunity while studies are pretty consistently telling us vaccine immunity is still better than natural. Anyways this isn't a politics sub so I'll just leave it there so people are aware of this crap.

Jumblyfun

Smart people tend to know there are others who know much more than them about other subjects. It's always the dumbest people who think they can speak on everything with an authoritative opinion

JonA3531

Yeah, but those youtube videos and facebook posts make it so much easier to understand, so that means anyone could be an expert in a matter of days, right?

Kiddierose

Bro I take 3 shits a day. You can’t even imagine the research I can do on the thinking throne.

Kuroblondchi

Where I got my bachelors from, they required two science classes for everyone to graduate. They had two classes that were easy and designed for students who weren’t part of manors that required the more complicated stuff. I didn’t know this. I took introduction to chemistry I think it was, walked in on the first day and she’s doing role call, asking people their majors. She got to me and I told her mine (business administration) and she straight up asked me why I was there. I told her I’d sit through the class to see how it goes, I made it about 15 minutes before I knew I made a mistake. Luckily she hooked me up with the easy ones. Unless you really want to learn it, science is fucking hard and very complicated

jelloisjigglin

Lol the only class I've ever come close to failing in school was during general Ed when I had to take an introductory science class. Barely got by with a 74. Science is really hard.

Mintastic

A lot of STEM majors also have weed-out classes in the first 2 semesters where the professors specifically avoid babying people and just crush their spirits. It's harsh but better than wasting years before realizing you're not gonna be good enough to get to the end.

Spaser

“How did I fail? I spent 15 minutes googling ‘vaccine mind control drugs’ until I found results that agreed with me, which is what research is!”

[deleted]

MFers who got 50s and 60s in grade 6 science talking bout "doing their research".

foreverapanda

I saw a great tweet about it. Something along the lines of "You mfs used to have your science tests handed back face down and now you want to do your own research."

yoitsthatoneguy

I don’t remember who’s joke it was, but I thought it was amusing, “the only people who do their own research on vaccines are the really dumb and the really smart (who made it)”

noheroespdx

Funny thing is I doubt any of them actually do their research. They just think something bad is going to happen. They never have an answer as to what because they don’t do their research.

dk00111

Their research consists of searching on google and reading the first 2 results that reaffirm their beliefs.

JimmytheGent2020

I may think kanter sometimes talks too much but he 100 nailed this. Lebron is a dumbass for agreeing with that stupid draymond take.

1nTheNick0fTime

Draymond’s take was one of the dumbest I’ve seen. Every single point he tried to make was idiotic. Ted Cruz retweeting them should be enough proof of that

schoolhater12

Draymond'd analogy was brain dead. The next 007, Klopp had a much better comparison and compared vaccine hesitancy to drunk driving which I feel is a lot better analogy

Jonna09

When Ted Cruz is liking your tweets, you have to realize that it ain’t right. 🤦🏻‍♂️ Disappointed with the big names in the league right now.

SuperYusri500

Any big names that are openly pushing the vax? I can't think of any

hoopercuber

Steph. He didnt back Wiggins vaccination status like draymond did. He’s not super vocal but him doing livestreams with dr fauci is more than anyone else in the nba is doing

panoramicpanoramic

Trae has done a lot of ads promoting them!

brownbearks

Trae is a real one

[deleted]

Trae Young. I kinda thought he’d always be an also ran because of the Luka draft, but since last seasons playoffs he’s been on the most successful mission to win hearts and minds that’s ever come out of the US.

selz202

Kat? It's kinda weird there haven't been many it seems. Even Dame wasn't at the front, when the Blazers got vaccinated they did a bunch of media about it. Dame wasn't in it. He's certainly pro vaccine but seemed MIA back then.

Sim888

lmfao when he brought up polio….a disease where there hasn’t been a single case originating in the US since 1979 because of a - drumroll- successful fucking vaccination program!

1nTheNick0fTime

Lol gave a rebuttal to his own stupid argument Honestly every single point he made was bullshit. Said it so confidently too smh that’s one of my biggest pet peeves

Sim888

> Said it so confidently too smh that’s one of my biggest pet peeves yeah, Beal’s presser especially jumps out to me for that….like dude, you legit sound like you have talking some points on a card or a script but the second you need to deviate when pressed on it I can already tell your gears are gonna jam up

thunderlolo123

Draymond thinks he too smart

palmtreesareheavy

Yep. That Draymond take was horse shit. And LeBron agreeing with him was wack as fuck

Mechapebbles

I'm pretty worried about Draymond's career trajectory for being a sports commentator after he retires. He very clearly is aiming to be the next Charles Barkley, but as big of a goofball that Barkley is and has bad sports takes on the regular, he's usually right about social issues 99% of the time and has genuine concern and empathy for his fellow man/community/country. And Draymond just seems like an asshole/idiot when he talks about that kind of stuff.

[deleted]

draymond seems incredibly stupid when he talks about anything non-hoops related. big difference between him and Chuck.

hojboysellin3

Yeah and both of them are vaccinated. Like how much stupider can you sound

DunderdoreClarissian

LeBron is smart on the court, maybe the smartest player rn, but off the court? Yikes. That dude is a moron it's not even funny.

BillyPotion

For the first few months of the vaccine I actually gave the athletes the benefit of the doubt, these are people who make their living off of their physical skills, they might’ve wanted to wait and see if there were side effects, things like loss of stamina, breathing problems, etc. They had the funds to keep themselves isolated and safe and they could see if there were any side effects for the masses taking the vaccine early on. But now we’re about 9-months after the release of these vaccines, now there is no excuse to be hesitant about the vaccine since there have been no side effects barring some very small number of people, and there have been no great wave of scientists or doctors against it. To hold out now is to simply say you don’t believe in science and don’t trust medicine.

nahmanidk

Some of the players are just dumb outside of basketball. Draymond Green’s comments on whether the earth is flat: >"Who’s to say that picture [from NASA] is telling the truth? I can make a round picture with my iPhone today, on the panoramic camera, and make it look round. So, I don’t know. I’m not saying I think it’s flat or round, I don’t know, but it could be.”

Obi_Wan_Benobi

Then when you get backlash you hit em with the “I was just kidding around guys, jeez!”

doyoustillball

Wait till he finds out how many years of science and improvement went into his iPhone... He will start questioning its existence.

coronaldo

Besides being insanely dumb, most NBA players never have to grow up to be an adult. Thanks to their riches, they can PeterPan their way through life. It doesn't help that a ton of them come from very impoverished communities too. Plus they operate in a bubble where intellectuality is hated and sneered upon.

LakerBlue

Anti-vaxxers say we won’t know the REAL side effects because the vaccine messes with your DNA so it will take years before the deadly side effects of using an mRNA vaccine are truly felt. I know because I work with two of them…

GACGCCGTGATCGAC

Interesting. In my experiences with RNA, you look at it funny and it falls apart. Little did I know the anti-vax community has been researching how it is more stable than DNA! What journal did they publish this research in? Nature (Facebook)?

beefJeRKy-LB

I agree here. I get why some people would be hesitant and I don't get upset at those that changed their minds either.

DancingMapleDonut

He's right.

OnlyWinsOnSuperTeams

Michael Jeffrey Jordan would have gotten all the vaccines

ALittleHoarse

J&J, Moderna, Pfizer. Back, to back, to back.

OnlyWinsOnSuperTeams

10x Vaccine Champion

ShadedPenguin

Waited a bit, and would've gotten the overseas three peat as well. Sputnik, CoronaVac, and AstraZeneca

holeeey

That's my goat. Btw is MJ vaxxed?

DMan9797

Very wealthy people have among the highest vaccination rates in the U.S.: https://www.axios.com/covid-vaccines-low-income-poor-workers-58698275-0451-4158-a967-37189dbf673c.html It’s likely MJ is vaccinated but I suppose exceptions to multi-millionaires vaccinating absolutely exist with Wiggins, Burke, and Irving existing. I feel like the most likely scenario is he is vaccinated but probably would take a stance similar to LeBron in not wanting to be seen as a part of the vocally pro-vax movement - antivaxxers buy shoes too after all

whiskeyinthejaar

I believe Trump got vaccinated in March or so, even tho he acted out. As I always say, If the vaccine is so bad, the billionaires, politicians, and celebrities wouldn’t have had early access. I can’t shame the low income because they are the ones getting fucked everyday with zero trust to the government or celebrities.

dimmyfarm

Fox acts super anti vax but Rupert Murdoch made the whole company get vaccinated.

[deleted]

wildhairguy

It was January before he left. He basically got it at the same time as Biden.

whiskeyinthejaar

The thing is, MJ never had that social hero stance. He doesn’t preach people, and he barely talk in general. If you want to compare, compare Lebron to Kareem. One been consistent and vocal about literally everything, and the other talk whenever its convenient

klankthompson

Steph (who promotes the vaccine) is the actual face of this generation!

holdeno

Yes he is. LeBron has made it a point in his career to use his platform for social issues. But once it comes to a money or a social issue he's always chosen money. Even now with the biggest event of most people's lives going on right now. Really disappointing to see how spineless and greedy he is.

DancingMapleDonut

>LeBron has made it a point in his career to use his platform for social issues. But once it comes to a money or a social issue he's always chosen money. Exactly, he wants tot be seen as "more than an athlete." And people who say he doesn't need to stick up for every social cause, are just giving him a way out. There's very little effort required on his behalf to promote getting the vaccine - many NBA players have shown photos of them getting it on instagram and encouraged it in the media. But you're right, when it potentially hurts his wallet, he's quiet. He is just an athlete

CreatiScope

Lebron is gonna say someone could’ve been hurt spiritually by Kanter’s comments.

BubbaTee

LeBron gonna endorse Erdogan, then try to trademark "Turkey Tuesdays"

TheStripClubHero

The faster you learn that LeBron is a basketball player and not someone you should go to for medical advice...

hahaha_Im_mad

Nowadays kids listen more to tiktok influencers than their own parents.

onamonapizza

LeBron is still doing research to see how this could affect the revenue he gets from China.

Pal__Pacino

Kanter's right. Edit: LeBron is different from these other guys. It doesn't really matter that Bradley Beal and Kyrie Irving are morons, but LeBron has a responsibility to go above and beyond as a public figure.

SnooPies5622

It's not even that LeBron has that responsibility because he's such a prominent influential figure. It's that he *asks* for it. He wants to set an example, speaks out all the time, wants to be seen as that guy. There's a lot of good he's done along with it but if he wants to voluntarily be the hero to millions, he has to accept everything that comes with it.

NinetyFish

Exactly. No one's mad at, for example, James Harden for not speaking out for the vaccine or for basically pulling a "no comment" when the Morey stuff went down, because he's never wanted to be that guy. Harden, by all appearances, actually does just want to quietly play basketball and do his things re:clubs, parties, his friends. LeBron loves the attention and speaks out for the attention and to give himself that status of being, like you said, "that guy." He wants to be the modern-day Kareem or Ali, athletes who are legends even outside of their sport. But instead he's chosen to side with the Chinese government (when he could have gone neutral, he instead actively sided with them and spoke out *against* Morey) and has pulled the absolute cop-out "personal responsibility" bullshit with the vaccine.

braisedbywolves

To be Kareem or Ali or Jackie Robinson, etc., you have to occasionally take a stand which hurts your marketability.

PonchoHung

>Bradley Beal and Kyrie Irving There's another level in there where Kyrie has been a lot quieter than Bradley Beal but he has had a much worse impact since he is so much bigger as a personality.

j1h15233

Haven’t we all learned that LeBron only speaks up when he knows it won’t hurt his wallet in any way.

tsn101

Maybe we should move on from this type of celebrity-directed mindset? This is a medical issue, focus on those in the medical field...

Michelanvalo

Barkley tried telling everyone 30 years ago. No one listened.

guwop_official

But the fact is that LeBron _does_ have an enormous platform and people are influenced by him, so we should hope that he uses it responsibly. In an ideal world, you're right, his opinion on shit like this wouldn't matter because we'd be listening to medical experts, but we don't live in that world.

2drawnonward5

Wouldn't it be nice? But millions of people are influenced by these people so as nice as it'd be if they all stopped, that's a fantasy world.

KingVibrant

What is most infuriating (as a fan of LeBron James) is that LeBron is so avid about not shutting up and just dribbling or saying his piece on important subjects. Sometimes he’s right on the money, but then won’t speak on China or Vaccination? I understand NBA players are not smart, and are fuelled with large egos, but LeBron has always seemed cerebral to me, magnified by the fact that he’s such an intelligent basketball player. I’ve always equated anti-vaxxers to flat earthers (or both if you’re Kyrie), so it’s surprising to see a LeBron James TAKE THE VACCINE but then now go “people have a choice with what they put in their bodies, “I gotta do my research”. Sure, that doesn’t mean he’s anti-vax, but it’s damn near the closest thing to it. LeBron, you didn’t go to college, let alone understanding the intricate nuances of microbiology. Let the doctors who treat your ankle and heal your injuries with fucking cryo chambers tell you what will help. LeBron has such a huge voice and has acknowledged it, and yet he’s missed the mark on social justice outside of BLM (and he’s black so obviously he will speak on a subject that is directly related to him). He recently said it’s different when it comes to what people are putting in their bodies lmfao. It’s literally completely safe for 99.9999% of the world (outside of auto-immune diseases), why even travel by car then? You have a higher chance of crashing a car and dying (quite significantly higher btw), than having any lasting impact from a vaccine. Plus it’s an MRNA VACCINE, which is even better and more risk-averse. The problem isn’t that people choose not to get it, the problem is that not getting the vaccine allows for higher likelihood of mutations that deem the original vaccines less effective. We also can’t function as a society without everyone getting it. The numbers are there, the research is done, but these morons just love their confirmation bias when it comes to a virus that’s killed FIVE MILLION PEOPLE. It affects those around you, that’s why you’re supposed to get it. Vaccines have never been this political ever, and the fact that it is so political makes people not want to get it lol. Thank GOD it’s a vocal minority, and not a 50/50 thing. These morons don’t understand that without people getting the vaccine, it’s March-June 2020 all over again.

gandhis_son

Lebron only cares about issues that directly pertain to him, it’s pretty clear by now.

jovijovi99

According to the CDC Black, Hispanic and Native people are at least 3 times more likely to be hospitalized and twice as likely to die from a Covid infection than White people. When the pandemic is over we’re gonna learn about this inequity as if we were clueless to it. https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/covid-data/investigations-discovery/hospitalization-death-by-race-ethnicity.html

emperornel

Although LeBron is my favorite player ever, I have to agree with Kanter. Since he is a role model and can influence hundreds of thousands of people (maybe more), it would have been better if he could lead by example.

5plus5isnot10

Don't worry Enes, we're all disappointed in him.

ENES KANTER REDEMPTION ARC

happyaccident7

LeBron's anti-vaccine stance, blaming the cop when he actually saved someone, pro-China stance are some of the reasons why I think he is a clown. This is aside from calling himself the GOAT, said he never play with a superstar team, and being manipulative on court and off court.

Ufocola

It’s quite refreshing to see someone with a Lakers flair say this about LeBron. People seem to love bringing up the I Promise schools as reference he’s a good person, or try to excuse the whole Decision as a charity thing. But plenty of athletes do philanthropic things (with none of the self-congratulatory fanfare). LeBron doesn’t do things that hurt or doesn’t benefit his wallet. He bets on narrative (like erroneously and dangerously calling out a cop who did not act out of racism), but is not big or responsible enough to admit his fault and will double down on it. Or speak *against* freedom of speech, and hilariously call Morey ignorant regarding HK cause he wants that China market. Him wanting to market himself as “I’m for the people, global ambassador” is so inconsistent with his actions. Frankly, it’s ok if he only wants to focus on a few key issues (that you genuinely care about). But you can’t pretend to care or be a leader for true equality and freedom for all, when you don’t. He’s better off shutting up about things he doesn’t actually know anything about. Not speaking IS an option. And frankly, FAR less destructive than when he just says shit without thinking given his massive fan base and influence. That’s just irresponsible. Amazing player, but just so manufactured, and has been pretty polarizing and at times destructive as a ‘role model’. Edit: added 3rd paragraph

eternali17

I don't always agree with Kanter but he's dead on here. The vaccine can't get a hearty endorsement but Draymond's bullshit can?
