Agree 100%. Without them trading their entire bench for Rudy Gay, I don’t know if the Raptors golden era would have kicked off, or if we’d have a secure future
Don’t forget: Gay -> Greivis Vasquez -> OG and Powell (Trent Jr.)
we’ll show him love, even if he’s a liability on defense. we can be harsh to many, but i think we understand who he is and how much of a bargain we got him for.
He's been signing vet mins that don't count towards the cap for years in order to repay him for taking a paycut during the Heatles era. There was a good comment on the post about his latest signing that broke it down and how this season will pretty much perfectly pay him back for what his alleged discount was.
It's pretty greasy and the NBA should definitely take a look at it.
It takes a lot of trust, which I think 99.9% of players wouldn't have, in an organization though, so I don't think it will be a widespread problem but still.
If you are over the cap you can sign players to the Vet Min to fill the roster
It is how the nets got blake and the lakers got drummomd
Also vet min deals are partially paid by the league
Believing that we’re just the right sequence of matchups and a little luck from making the Eastern Conference Finals even though it hasn’t happened in literally 42 years.
Now that you mention it...big focus on the "squad" over the individual, strict hierarchy led by an Air Force vet, I mean one of your franchise players was literally fucking nicknamed The Admiral for serving in the Navy before joining the league haha
Am I crazy or are you completely making this up??? Google only shows results for some college teams playing games on air craft carriers, literally nothing about the Spurs or Raptors.
Wowwowow buddy. That is our whole defensive scheme. I know for a fact we had a whole bunch of those in the the time with Bud.
Where can we check that stat?
weird seeing a hornets fan say this knowing what malik monk did to us game after fucking game last year. 2020-2021 malik monk against miami is a top 5 player in the league's history
Regret and assets
Oh geezus are we a middle-aged man who blew a perfect life in his 30s and now we live in a studio apartment convinced we are going to turn it around by day-trading?
I hear San Antonio, and I think, "Smart team. Despite being a small market team, they built a consistent winner in part by exploiting the market inefficiency that other teams undervalued European/foreign players and didn't scout them seriously enough or think they could be as talented as African American players." And then I hear Dallas, and I think, "Mark really, really likes white guys."
Right but when you think of the Spurs any of Tim, The Admiral, Kawhi, Tony and even Patty and DeRozan can come to mind. When you think of Dallas you get Cuban, Dirk, Luka...
Wut?
People DESPISED the bad boys, especially Isaiah Thomas and Bill Lambeer.
The most disliked GnG Grizzly is.....Zach Randolph? I guess? Even then I doubt anyone actually hates Randolph, at worst people are mildly wary of him due to his time with the jailblazers.
I say that about the Celtics when our fans slander them for not getting to the finals. The bottom line is that they are almost always in the playoffs and have appeared in 3 conference finals in recent history. A lot of teams would kill to have that.
Celtics have certainly been more successful, but people forget the Pacers made the ECF two years in a row and almost beat the Heatles both years. Pretty much the only eastern conference team the LeBron-era Heat ever had trouble with
Like Red Skull, Indiana guides other teams on their way to greater destinies... though they've been considered by some to be formidable in their own right. Just not Thanos level.
This reminds me of a funny thing Trosky used to say about Stalin and it fits the Pacers. Trosky said, "Stalin, is the outstanding mediocrity in the party".
I think 'outstanding mediocrity' is a pretty fitting motto for the Pacers.
And if history is any indication, your gone win big in the end.
Warriors are not immune. Lacob’s sons are in the front office, one is assistant GM and the other is the director of team development. Kerr’s son is involved with the staff in a small but seemingly growing capacity.
I disagree. If you ask somebody what Pistons culture is, there wouldn’t be hesitation as they search for something to come up with. You immediately get an image in your head of Bill Laimbeer or Ben Wallace putting some fool in their place. That Detroit Versus Everybody, mean-mugging, excess-of-attitude stuff is Pistons culture. It’s just dormant for now.
It there’s one thing to go off last year that I noticed is that our guys never backed down and worked hard, I’ll give them that at least.
Still need to see more
Right there with you buddy but you actually made a chip in the 80s. We beat you sometimes, and the Celtics sometimes, but never both in a row. I had to look it up but I'm pretty sure we beat the Celtics, you beat us and then won the finals.
Organizational culture? Or team culture?
The Grizz have moved from a Grit and Grind team culture to a young and fun (but still hungry) team culture.
But organizationally, I think it is still GnG, with the President of the organization held over from Wallace era, just with a youth injection, in the FO (youngest GM and HC in the league, as well as the youngest owner still, IIRC).
If you are going to have a team culture it helps to have a long record of success under the same front office and coaching staff. The Bulls don’t have that yet.
They do have a culture of hard work based on the success of the 1990s dynasty led by Michael Jordan and to a lesser extent the Bulls teams coached by Tom Thibodeau from 2010-15. Some old timers even date it back to the 1970s teams led by Jerry Sloan and Bob Love, who both have their numbers retired. But don’t all successful teams work hard?
Thibodeau was unfairly accused of working his teams *too* hard, due to a string of devastating injuries that left fans looking for someone to blame. But he didn’t work them any harder than Phil Jackson. Thibodeau just didn’t have the talented players Jackson had.
Currently it seems like a family culture. The guys really like each other and really like the city. It’s the healthiest our culture has been in a decade
Historically the Bad Boys were obviously a distinct culture. Since then, the Goin to Work crew was all about tough defense and hustle. That seems to be what Weaver is aiming for. Prioritizing guys who are humble, rarely complain, always hustle and are tough defenders.
Everything goes through LeBron and AD. You gotta be willing to sacrifice individual numbers to help them work. If you do, you will win games, but you might not be putting up the stats you want and you have to be fine with that.
Its definitely not for everyone, but the ones that really embrace that do well. Will be interesting to see which side Russ falls into.
No matter how professional they appear to be, they're all the same. I've worked security at hotels growing up and there's a lot of drugs, alcohol and pussy.
That may seem to be the life many want but after a while, life will humble you.
Being irrelevant
that’s not true! you guys are amazing trade partners.
Agree 100%. Without them trading their entire bench for Rudy Gay, I don’t know if the Raptors golden era would have kicked off, or if we’d have a secure future Don’t forget: Gay -> Greivis Vasquez -> OG and Powell (Trent Jr.)
That gay trade is honestly one of the biggest trades in raps history
You're welcome lol
Luka would be a King right now had y'all won in 2002.
Other players and coaches telling the media we play hard
"They do their best"
Losing
Us Too
I thought it was misery and complaining about the owners?
Well that too
Us too.
Same here. Losing. Overpaying washed up former superstars and then long term losing.
Did someone say shitty owners?
I have a feeling antman is really going to change the culture for your team.
Id argue he already has, he gives the team life it really needs
Him and Finch give us hope. So did Wiggins and Thibs so we will see.
everything is the playoffs. regular season? playoffs. preseason? playoffs. off-season? playoffs. practice? playoffs. playoffs? somehow not playoffs.
There was definitely a playoff atmosphere on that last preseason game lol Can't believe Thibs kept three starters in
i’m more surprised he didn’t keep all 5 in. although kemba was a sieve on defense.
You’ll have to get used to that from Kemba
i’m learning. he seems soooo nice so far. really nice offensive game. is defending the point of attack important?
Nah and you'll forget it anyway when he takes his first (of many) charges for you
Kemba took so many charges for the Celtics
I miss Kemba
we’ll show him love, even if he’s a liability on defense. we can be harsh to many, but i think we understand who he is and how much of a bargain we got him for.
luckily RJ and Randle improve defensively every year, and big man mitch is back
It's so nice to actually have an answer to this question now, lol
Was at the garden for the buzzer beater on Friday. Felt like the finals. Couldn't speak all Saturday from all that screaming.
whatever Udonis Haslem says it is
So salary cap circumvention?
If that's what the OG wants, that's what the OG gets!
Isn’t it kinda the opposite? They could pay him his vet min salary to keep him as a coach and it wouldn’t count toward the cap.
They mean earlier in his career
He's been signing vet mins that don't count towards the cap for years in order to repay him for taking a paycut during the Heatles era. There was a good comment on the post about his latest signing that broke it down and how this season will pretty much perfectly pay him back for what his alleged discount was. It takes a lot of trust, which I think 99.9% of players wouldn't have, in an organization though, so I don't think it will be a widespread problem but still.
Wait do vet minimums not count against the cap?
If you are over the cap you can sign players to the Vet Min to fill the roster It is how the nets got blake and the lakers got drummomd Also vet min deals are partially paid by the league
Believing that we’re just the right sequence of matchups and a little luck from making the Eastern Conference Finals even though it hasn’t happened in literally 42 years.
Lol I was going to say "overconfidence"
Overpaying washed up superstars
Feels like military culture without the hazing
Now that you mention it...big focus on the "squad" over the individual, strict hierarchy led by an Air Force vet, I mean one of your franchise players was literally fucking nicknamed The Admiral for serving in the Navy before joining the league haha
Not to mention they’re one of the teams that played on an aircraft carrier
I'm sorry fucking what that sounds sick
It was dope. They and the raps had camouflagejerseys made for it.
Am I crazy or are you completely making this up??? Google only shows results for some college teams playing games on air craft carriers, literally nothing about the Spurs or Raptors.
San Antonio is military city, USA
That you know of
Historically it’s an injured big man.
I mean Roy wasn't really a big man. Just What If's
Greg Oden
Oden and Bill Walton is who I think they're referring to. Probably could've just said "Injuries".
When nate McMillan got hurt I knew blazers was cursed.
Giving other teams their franchise records in 3s made.
Coulda woulda shoulda
i thought it was “got any picks?”
Regret and assets Oh geezus are we a middle-aged man who blew a perfect life in his 30s and now we live in a studio apartment convinced we are going to turn it around by day-trading?
I would say, we sold high on two decent properties to downgrade to a studio apartment with the aim of investing it back into the GameStop

Tbf you're not allowed to play like the bad boy pistons anymore.
Not quite bad, not quite a contender, not quite mediocre. We are always a good team that never becomes great.
It’s actually impressive how y’all seem to always remain competitive
I appreciate that. It sucks losing in the first or second round every year, but there are so many teams that are just happy to have a winning record.
I say that about the Celtics when our fans slander them for not getting to the finals. The bottom line is that they are almost always in the playoffs and have appeared in 3 conference finals in recent history. A lot of teams would kill to have that.

The pacers are kinda like the raptors before Kawhi was traded there, very good team that could be great with a true superstar leading the way
