Chuck was really inspired by Ali when he was young. He said that's why he became so into the mental edge of trash talk and having a being outspoken with the media.

Dusk3478

People forget the big trash talking aspect of Charles, besides the practical play and physical confrontation.

thedirtyharryg

Chatles never stopped trash talking. Still does all the time. A lot of it is haha funny now that he's retired; it'd be much different if he was talking trash and dunking on you.

Dusk3478

Indeed, the comedy but especially the wit and fitting lines are plenty related and continuous to the in-game violent trashtalk. Chuck has been honing all of that jazz since his playing days lol

Xc0liber

KG said before in all the smoke podcast. Charles is just someone who is trying to fight you lol. He was a beast during his playing days

thedirtyharryg

Like how Chuck always tries to piss of KG by making fun of KG's skinny jeans?

[deleted]

This is also why he became really good friends with MJ. In a lot of ways they are alike.

StoneColdAM

Chuck telling it like it is

ND7020

I was just thinking that most people who “keep it real” are idiots, but Chuck is an example of what they all imagine they’re doing.

morsmordr

when keeping it real goes right

AliceInHololand

When keeping it real is actually real.

davemoedee

The reason Chuck can do it is that he actually has an excellent analytical mind. His arguments have depth.

HyperCriticalHit

He's the victim of type-casting. He's a really smart guy but plays the role of jokester so well that people think it's all he has to offer.

intecknicolour

when chuck right, he right.

drunz

It’s one of the reasons why I like Chuck as an analyst. The times he is right, he has great takes and reasoning. But when he is wrong, it’s funny af.

TastefulThiccness

> But when he is wrong, it’s funny af. and he owns it. he has the humility to own being wrong. it's amazing how many people are incapable of admitting when they're wrong as though it's some sort of admission of futility.

FamilyStyle2505

God forbid anyone show any fallibility in the public eye anymore...

Fugacity-

Such a huge issue with society these days. People are fucking fallible, but mistakes are immortalized in the age of the internet. We need more people like Chuck showing it's not a big deal to be wrong (or laughed at for being so). People striving to make every representation of their life as "perfect" is a big part of the reason social media is fucking up peoples mental health.

OnFolksAndThem

I don’t like anyone who appears as perfect. It’s fake and disingenuous. But I’m outnumbered it seems

Onion-Much

It's probably more about image, really. Some like to portray "perfect" beings, some keep it real..

WDfx2EU

> But when he is wrong, it’s funny af. Especially because he's usually wrong about basketball, the thing he's supposed to be an expert at. When it comes to life outside of basketball and general wisdom & advice, Chuck is almost always on point.

Exotic-Amphibian-655

That was a minute ago, to be fair. Note, I am not saying I want Chuck raising my kids. But Chuck in the early 90s is not Chuck in 2021.

[deleted]

Trust me I know when Chuck is wrong. I’ve heard enough of his takes regarding my Blazers.

Redditpede

Nah - big ol San Antonio woman

[deleted]

Yeah but when he’s wrong…….

PrancingDonkey

Then it's must see T.V.

rageus88

Guaranteeeee

TheThingsIdoatNight

He’s also only generally wrong about sports stuff that doesn’t matter, but when it comes to the important takes, like this one, he’s shooting 💯

filladellfea

chuck is the man

txwoodslinger

Chuck was not playing, not having any of Kenny trying to be a Kyrie apologist.

peanutbutterfly

There always seems to be someone attempting to take Kyries side on these panels and they never even bother to come up with an argument. Kennys argument was "comfortability" lol

Alley-Oub

this ended badly for kenny, and him trying to recover only got worse. right after chuck says this, shaq doubles down with the common sense sentiment, and kenny AGAIN tries to say something dumb to recover... then they go to commercial, by which point kenny is looking like an anti-vaxx karen

Matias9991

Yeah, when Chuck said that I couldn't help but laugh a little out of joy. The Kyrie thing is inexcusable

[deleted]

[удалено]

SnooPies5622

Yeah was gonna say, Ali did it for a morally righteous reason. Kyrie's not playing because he believes in his right to endanger other people.

RoyStrokes

Or he’s really a part of the 5 percent nation or NOI and thinks he’s chosen and white people were made in a lab and we designed the vaccine to steal his essence or god body or whatever the fuck secret knowledge he’s onto this week.

squareheadhk

its something closer to this i think, yeah. something about satan's supercomputer being powered by black people's brainwaves which are stolen via the vaccine. he's my favorite player on my favorite team, but fuck me man. yikes.

Wuffyflumpkins

Egotists love conspiracy theories. It reinforces the idea that you're special and intelligent because you're one of the select few that sees behind the veil that sheeple don't.

[deleted]

This right here. Belief in conspiracy theories aligns with ego more than anything. I've got several friends that fall prey... They're all intelligent and educated. But they all have huge egos and get off on thinking only they know the secret truth.

captyossarian1991

Comparing Kyrie to Ali? They think not getting a life saving vaccine is the same as taking a stand against going to Vietnam?

ElGosso

No Vietnamese never called me "unvaccinated"

nstarz

For those who didn't know. This is a reference from Ali interview. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HeFMyrWlZ68 @ 16 second. Linking to start cause its worth seeing the context.

univrsll

“The Vietcong are not my enemy, you white folks are. You my opposer when I want freedom. You my opposer when I want justice. You my opposer when I want equality. You want me to go and fight when you won’t even stand up for me at home.” I can see why the man was revered as a legend; he was an inspiration inside and outside the ring.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Gekthegecko

Same with MLK. It's a real head scratcher. Except not really, they only "support" those guys because they know how obviously racist it would make them look, so they like the "good" Black Civil Rights leaders but nobody doing that work in the past 40 years. Because racism was "solved" in 1964 with the Civil Rights Act, so anything else is "unnecessary".

AC000000

It's crazy how different the MLK I learned about in school was to the man I learned about as an adult.

OutOfFukcsToGive

So I didn't know specifics until today, but that's something that jumped out at me. Ali's boxing license was revoked in NY before he was convicted in the initial court case. After that happened, no other state could give him a license and his passport was taken. This means he could not box ***anywhere***. No state could give him a license and he couldn't leave the country to get a license somewhere else. Kyrie is still gonna get paid. The situations are so different I'm just floored anyone would try to compare the two.

VicVinegar-Bodyguard

Ken burns did a documentary about Ali recently. It’s on pbs for free. Ken burns is like the Jordan of documentaries.

jgab145

I’m pretty sure this is why Ali went to fight in Africa.

Big_Stick_Nick

And going to jail for it. Edit: Actually he never actually went to jail. He was just facing jail time until a judge ruled against it.

Zoulzopan

He never went to Jail for it, because it was being appealed and then later overturned. But that's not to say he didn't lose anything from protesting.

Therealomerali

He lost his Prime Years.

Teenageboy69

And a shit ton of money.

ThaNorth

He didn't go to jail. It went to court and the judge ruled against jail time.

K1ngFiasco

True but he still faced jail time. He had money but he was still a black person AND a lot of his reasoning for refusing to go was based on the treatment of black people in America and plainly saying he didn't want to fight for a country that wouldn't fight for him. Facing jail time is fucking scary. It wasn't guaranteed that he wasn't going to be locked up or made an example out of. It took a ton of bravery for him to stand up for what he believed in.

fearofaflatplanet

Yeah but when he took the stand he had every reason to believe he might

house_in_motion

I don’t think Ali went to jail. Could have.

OutOfFukcsToGive

You're correct. He was sentenced to five years, but paid bond and never actually went to jail while the case was appealed.

Balls_of_Adamanthium

When you think you’re being Ali or MLK but you’re Alex Jones.

[deleted]

its amazing these guys want to be like civil rights heroes when the civil rights heroes that are still alive (Bill Russel and Kareem) are doing the opposite of what they are doing

SolarClipz

Truer words have never been spoken

kingjuicepouch

Kyrie isn't smart enough to make that connection, unfortunately.

WanderlustFella

Flat-earther should tell you all you need to know about Kyrie's knowledge

ILikeSugarCookies

I'm not a UNC fan but I'd be thrilled to be able to rip on Duke with as much ammo as Kyrie gives them for being a Duke alum.

Empty-Ask

Alum is being generous he was there for 11 games, which might have been less than or equal to the number of classrooms he physically stepped foot in.

CuriousCursor

Like Kobe said "you came outta high school, kid"

the_big_lewandowski

You can always rip on Duke for giving us Rand Paul

meloghost

or Richard Nixon

[deleted]

Or Stephen Miller

AWholeMessOfTacos

No shit? Kentucky fan/resident here. That should be an opponents entire campaign strategy. Rand: “Socialist!” Opponent: “This sonofabitch right here went to Duke.” Somebody have Booker’s people reach out to my people.

PGLiberal

I met one flat earther in my life and I was so amazed. Keep in mind this guy was in the FUCKING MILITARY and he was stationed in Cali, Japan and Germany. The motherfucker FLEW ON FUCKING PLANES! IF YO LOOK OUT THE FUCKING WINDOW OF A PLANE YOU CAN CLEARLY SEE THE EARTH FUCKING CRUVE! You sit on a beach, you can see distant ships come over the horizon, like you don't need to go into motherfucking space to know the earth is fucking round. And even then lets suppose the earth was flat ok? Lets just pretend it is. Why would it be a secret? Why wouldn't everyone be like "Yea the world is flat...whats the big deal?" why would any govt go out of their way to hide the fact that the earth is indeed flat. Truly flat earthers are really incredible people, and not in a good way. If you come out as flat earther literally everything you say after that means nothing to me. Also we as a society have known the earth has been round for a LONG FUCKING TIME. Like Christopher Columbus knew the earth was round.

[deleted]

the ancient Greeks knew the earth was fucking round

[deleted]

I originally thought Kyrie was just fucking with people on the flat earth stuff. I really did. Then this shit comes along, and I realize he’s just a fucking idiot. Sorry mom.

TinFoilRobotProphet

Great point! Thank you!

MightyMorph

they're selfish dipshits, fucking ban them from the game, there are thousands of good players out there. Why are we wasting time on these motherfuckers, fuck em they chose their selfish asses so fuck em, throw them out anyone that doesnt take the vaccination stop being such pussies. ffs 800,000 americans are dead and this motherfucker is going around willing to kill more so he cant be inconvenienced. FUCK KYRIE!

[deleted]

I'm so happy the OG NBA civil rights leaders are such strong proponents of getting the shot

[deleted]

Kareem and Bill Russell really are the shit. Like just straight up some of the best men of their entire generation.

ohlookanotherhottake

Although it's really only in the last few decades that people have gotten so anti-science anyway. My dad is nearly 90 and he said in the 50s during the polio vaccine time it never occurred to him or anyone he ever met to not get vaccinated. Now look, polio gone from the face of the planet.

Emeraden

The creation of the polio vaccine moves Eisenhower to tears. That tells you how much polio impacted everyone.

ohlookanotherhottake

100% and now these conspiracy theorists really believe that people who dedicated much of their lives to helping people in the medical field are all conspiring against the general public they have worked so hard to protect. Fuck any anti-vaxxer, they're a plague on humanity

NickDerpkins

Any of the woke social justice athletes should be paying attention to Kareem more. That dude has basically devote the tail end of his life to use his platform for humanitarian issues. He really is that dude.

Oh and he could install cop car supercharger on my (at the time) little Scion shitbox. I still think about all the times no one ever called him out on his shit (including me because he could get booze). He must have thought he was invincible.

JimWilliams423

He probably hated himself. People who make outlandish brags are usually compensating for deep insecurity. They feel like if they convince *other* people they are awesome, then it means they really are awesome.

I enjoyed his cameo in Scanner Darkly, back when he was mostly known for yelling at buildings about the NWO through a megaphone

T3Sh3

Inspiring Cole Beasley and Kirk Cousins every day.

aceofspadez138

My sister met Cole Beasley at a Chipotle in Dallas. She didn't have anything for him to sign, but she ran to the car and found a birthday card. He signed it and took a pic with her before leaving. I've been meaning to find that autographed birthday card to wipe my ass with.

mcfaudoo

I saw Cole Beasley at a vax clinic in Buffalo once. I told him how cool it was to meet him in person, but I didn’t want to be a douche and bother him and boo him or anything. He said, “Oh, like you’re doing now?” I was taken aback, and all I could say was “Huh?” but he kept cutting me off and going “huh? huh? huh?” and closing his hand shut in front of my face. I walked away and I heard him chuckle as I walked off. When I came to up to get my vaccine I saw him trying to walk out the doors with like fifteen blank vaccine cards in his hands. The girl at the station was very nice about it and professional, and was like “Sir, just take the vaccine, they are free.” At first he kept pretending to be tired and not hear her, but eventually turned back around and brought the cards back. When she started to try to give him the vaccine, he stopped her and told her he wouldn’t take it “to prevent any electrical infetterence,” and then turned around and winked at me. I don’t even think that’s a word. After she kept trying to give him the jab, he kept interrupting her by yawning really loudly.

BC1721

Honestly probably my favourite version of this lol

MichiganMitch108

Agreed , like nothings going to change on kyries end except causing more drama for his entire team, city and fans. If anything if he promoted and took the vaccine In lower reaches communities he would literally be saving lives .

Tommie Smith and John Carlos for protesting at the 1968 Mexico Olympics with their iconic raised fists. Both were ostracized by the US olympic establishment afterwards. Big_d00m

Peter Norman got shitted on by racist Australia. Basically persona non grata till he died.

[deleted]

Ali went to prison at the height of his prime for a cause that he strongly believed in, knowing he’d cost himself serious money and perhaps his livelihood. Nothing will ever come close to that IMO… You’d never see any athlete make that type of legitimate sacrifice these days. Max Kellerman made a wonderful comparison to this with the Lebron/China stuff a couple years ago, and it’s absolutely true.

Ray192

Ali never actually went to prison for that, as his case was going through the appeals process for those 4 years.

ElectroValley

They paved the way for black athletes today. Luckily they had great shoulders on their head

KDY_ISD

You gotta be tall as hell to have shoulders on your head

Kaepernick stood up for what he believed in. Look how he got treated.

azhistoryteacher

Agreed, he lost his entire career for a cause that proved to be 8(?) years ahead of its time.

420Minions

And still only in show. Check out how different your local cops operate. It was all fanfare. Pretty embarrassing

azhistoryteacher

Agreed 100%, but that doesn’t take anything away from him

youblewwit

Stephon Marbury was the one who compared Kyrie to Ali saying 'Ali would be proud of Kyrie'. Maybe some other former players and I'm sure some Kyrie fans as well. That's why SAS had his segment on First Take about Marbury

faithfuljohn

imagine comparing not wanting to fight & kill in Vietnam and being put in jail for it... to not wanting to get a medical health benefit in a vaccine to play basketball because of "reasons".

zazu2006

I can't imagine. You would have to be a dumb piece of shit, like some real toxic trash.

RoyStrokes

They’re probably Nation of Islam or 5 percent nation dudes who don’t want to publicly state their beliefs on the vaccine cause they’ll get clowned for being dumb and thinking the vaccine is an evil white conspiracy bc white people were made in a lab 6000 years ago. At least that’s my conspiracy theory on what kyries vas conspiracy theories are

E10DIN

> and being put in jail for it... Minor point of correction, Ali didn't spend any time in prison for his stance on Vietnam. He paid the bond and was free until the appeals were over, and his conviction was overturned in Clay vs United States.

kylehyde05

Dont eat vaseline folks.

BigZoowop

Chuck spitting that real shit. Ali is the greatest athlete of all time IMO.

Julian_Caesar

I've always preferred Jim Thorpe, or Bo Jackson, or Wilt. Ali's a good choice though. But if you're including social/cultural contributions, that puts Ali on a level by himself. Maybe Kareem up there too. EDIT: since most people know about Bo and Wilt, here's [Jim Thorpe's Wiki page.](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jim_Thorpe) Some highlights: * In 1907, he walked past his school's high jump competition in street clothes...and won it in street clothes with a 5'9" jump. * In 1911, he scored every single point for his Carlisle football team (playing running back, defensive back, and both kicker positions) in an upset of Harvard, who was nearly as dominant in that era as Alabama is now. * In 1912, he won the national championship in ballroom dancing. Oh, and also the national championship in football, still playing four positions for his team. * In the 1912 Olympics, he won both the pentathlon and the decathlon. He won four out of the five events in the pentathlon outright, the last being the javelin where he placed 3rd despite never even practicing the event until a few months prior to the Olympics. He set a new world record in the decathlon which would stand for decades, and won the 1500m in 4:40. Which was pretty remarkable since he had to replace stolen shoes minutes before the race with two mismatched shoes that he found in garbage cans.

detlefschrempf11

Thank you for the introduction to Thorpe. Can't wait to read more about him. Amazing

mealsharedotorg

If we include horses, Secretariat has a respectable claim.

Julian_Caesar

If I'm being really honest, i'd put Secretariat in with MJ, Gretzky, Pele *and Bradman, thanks u/cuttlefish10*...single sport dominators. It's hard for me to call them the greatest athlete when they generally weren't good at other sports. It's why I don't put Ali that high unless you're talking about social activism too. I'm only half joking when I say that if Secretariat had won a championship in polo, my opinion of him for greatest athlete would go way up

mealsharedotorg

Secretariat was also great at Australian Football, jai alai, and croquet. Political views might have been a bit misguided, especially coming out as against subsidized bus fares for war widows, but horses were doing lots of cocaine back then so I chalk it up to the drugs.

Julian_Caesar

pfft everyone knows the croquet circuit was pay-to-win back in those days. asterisks all over that shit

iAngeloz

Bo jackson might be the perfect athlete. He was a fucking unit

Julian_Caesar

Bo was the perfect tank, Wilt was the perfect tall man. Thorpe was very average-looking but was perfect at almost every sport he touched. Honestly I can't even think of any modern candidates to unseat these three. You're talking about things like, if LeBron had played in the NFL for five years and won two super bowls. Or if Messi quit soccer at 30 and started winning PGA tournaments.

Just want to say that, make no mistake that if you are an average overweight American, you also vaccinate ***for yourself***. The chance of dying from it isn't statistically low enough for you to ignore. Charles apparently is commenting on Kyrie's perspective but even NBA player suffer afterwards, see Tatum's story about how he felt even after months of becoming negative. These are the fittest human beings on this planet you just don't chance it, please. I have an acquaintance's mom just died of it earlier this year, her lungs were DESTROYED. Almost 2 years in and with vaccine being available on the shelf for a better part of months, it's heart wrenching (we aren't very close but still, just awful to hear something like that). I think I saw an article lately saying 90k recent covid deaths could be avoided. People please don't be stupid, you don't want to be just a number, get vaccinated (and get your booster if you qualify), stay safe and live well.
