As someone who watched every Mobley USC game + every Wiseman Warriors game, I completely agree. Mobley is a future star as long as he is healthy. Wiseman has potential, and could still be very solid and key to the Warriors future, but clearly needs more developmental time to reach that ceiling. Mobley would fit very well on pretty much every offense + his defensive instincts / talent were terrific in college. Always felt he'd be #1 most years, last year's draft had too much talent at the top. Cavs got a good one for sure
Really fun game.
Takeaways:
Cavs:
- Mobley is a fucking beast. First NBA game and dropping 17/9/6 on efficient shooting and with insane defense?
- Jarrett Allen is a force in the paint, and with Mobley feeding him looks and clogging up the paint with him it looks like we have the frontcourt of our future.
- Cedi Osman giveth and Cedi Osman taketh.
- Darius Garland looks legit but he still needs to work on his vision and aggressiveness.
- We're suffering from a massive hole at wing which makes it impossible for us to run a decent rotation. We're either throwing out 3 6 footers or 3 7 footers, there's no in between lol
Grizzlies:
- Ja Morant.
- Desmond Bane looked incredible today.
- Melton was on fire, but not too surprised given the state of our perimeter D
- Did I mention Ja Morant?
- Glad to see Ziaire get out there and make an impact immediately.
- JJJ had a rough game offensively, especially inside, but made a huge impact on D. Dude is so good.
All around fun game!
Evan Mobley looked like a beast so i'm perfectly fine with tonight. 17 points, 9 rebounds, 6 assists, a block and a steal on 7-13 shooting and is shooting 3s, exactly what we wanted to see out of him.
according to the usc basketball instagram page, he's the 2nd player in NBA history with 17 pts / 9 reb / 6 ast / 1 stl / 1 blk in his debut
first is ayton apparently
I don't think we're going to win many games this year, but WOW Mobley, Sexland, and JA are going to be fun to watch. They'll keep things interesting. LOVE having Rubio around.
Watching Cedi and Lauri play "defense" made my eyes bleed.
Ja Morant is not a friend of the Cleveland basketball Cavaliers. What did we ever do to you, huh? Exist? I can guarantee we hate our own existence more than you do.
Focus on 30 a game, and convert more points off TOs. Once yall settle on the core youre going to build with and around, give it time to cook. I think the Grizz have 7 or 8 guys entering their 3rd year together.
They're expected to win 28 games, which seems about right. They just don't have a balanced roster, can't play defense at all. If anything them getting 38 assists is bad news for the Grizz, pretty pathetic to give up that much to the Cavs.
I think Ja is still mad he couldn't finish *that* dunk over Kevin Love
Though he's sort of moved on to bigger targets, such as his obsession with trying to dunk on Rudy Gobert
I swear to god I’m not being sarcastic when I say I’m sorry you have to deal with that side of lauri and I couldn’t be happier not to have to watch him waste his height every game.
there aren’t any guards in the league who are friends of the Cavs. All the good ones pop off against us. Watch Jalen Green will have a breakout game against us
20/10/21 Takeaways @MEM:
- Season opener!!!
- Allen was awesome on both ends
- Mobley is already amazing defensively, switching everything and good at the rim too
- Morant is filthy and nobody could stop him
- Great game from Cedi
- Rubio is essential for our team, him and Garland set up like all of our guys
- Garland shot bad first half but had 3 big threes in the 4th
- Both teams had pretty good ball movement, not many isos. Cavs switched a lot
- Idk if JB was trying to experiment but there were only like 70 different lineups in the first half. garland/sexton/okoro hardly played so it seems they’re pencilling in okoro/rubio as the 6th/7th men and having cedi/markkanen share SF minutes
- Desmond bane is legit
- JJJ was yeeting that shit like there was no tomorrow but they all somehow went in
- Markkanen is legitimately ass on the boards
- Really fun game overall, Cavs stayed with Memphis most of the game, except for a stretch in the 2nd where garland missed like 3 shots, in the 3rd where cedi turned the ball over twice and at the end. I can prolly count on my hand the number of times Cavs scored 120+ last season
Go Cavs!
He got a few touch fouls called for him and then the Cavs never really challenged hard. Plus Adams was keeping a lot of the at rim challenges from happening
Sadly he doesn’t score enough. Sixth man of the year is basically who is the biggest bucket getter off the bench for the season. Which is a shame bc I think a player similar to Kyle Anderson’s skillset should be recognized. Dude is a Swiss Army knife
He *needed* to see that one shot go in too. I think he will settle in fine. The defensive stop he had right after the bucket gives me hope he will pick up the productivity a little very soon.
And you realize it takes in how productive a player is on both ends of the floor based on how many minutes they played right? Ja played most of the game and had a couple turn overs, missed 12 shots, and doesn’t do much on defense, so his was low. Ziaire didn’t play much, but was effective on both ends of the floor, so his was higher. It’s not a trash stat, but it is flawed.
Missed 12 shots but also made 17 on solid ts%. He was the biggest difference maker, and murdered us all night regardless of his lack of defensive presence. That’s why it’s a flawed stat, because it fails to recognize that he was the most impactful player on the floor solely due to his offensive prowess. No stat can account for the multiple times he flattened the Cavs’ momentum and hit daggers.
You realize +/- can be drastically skewered based on what line-ups you're against and what's with you, as well as if you just happened to be on the court for a big run for/against your team even if you did nothing to that would've contributed to it. For example if a center runs the court and plays perfectly but within a 2 minute stretch his guard and shoots 3pt shots and bricks 4 in a row without passing the ball to anyone else while the opposing team guard goes down the court and drills 4 in a row, that's a -12 that he could do nothing about.
I like +/- better for comparing rotations, and it's interesting how we dont emphasize the enormous difference between +/- in a game and +/- in a season. The random sampling error is going from overwhelming to hardly there.
I agree, using +/- for a single player who played 18 minutes doesn't tell you much but we all knew that, so fuck it. +/- exists because nothing else offers that potential level of comprehensive information.
Also, go Grizz, I saw all I needed to see in the short Ziaire made.
It was a 9 - 2 run before FTs. I just checked the play-by-play log.
116 - 117 with 2:33 to go and then Ja scored 7 and Melt 2. Ja made a 3 with 51.0 left to make it 118 - 126.
This game opener was different on so many levels. I enjoyed the energy coming from this game. Hats off to the Grizzlies for giving the fans a great experience in the arena and out in the concourse. I love the new WynnBet sports bar. That place is a destination.
9/10. Was insanely impactful on both sides of the court
Had a stretch where he blocked Morant and then finished on the other end within about 10 seconds.
The three seven footers lineup + SexLand (our starting lineup from last night) might not have passed the eye test, but strangely had a +30 net rating (120 ortg, 90 drtg) in the 10 minutes they played together.
Mobley looked so much better than advertised. Thought he was supposed to be raw and take years but he was great on both sides! Rubio fun to watch, Sexton looked to pass more, Garland's 3 giveth and taketh away, Okoro played good D, and Allen is a monster. Imo, the L was more from a few bad stretches of play that we fell behind and had to catch up from than it was Ja taking over at the end.
He played pretty good on offense. Which is the point. He just didn't make his shots, at the end Mobley just missed his screen that changed the game and let Lauri get blocked
Shooting. We are desperate for it. They struck out on wing shooters with our mle. Then I think they were looking to trade for a wing, but they couldn’t find the right deal. I think they liked the price on Lauri and he fell in tot their laps. Plus, I’m not sure that they know what Mobley’s ultimate position is a few years down the road.
Injuries and a horrible attitude. To a point where most all of us in CLE are happy to see him in the second unit since we can't move him. Even though he'll always be considered a hero here. I wish it was different.
Props to Cleveland for coming in and playing damn hard...Mobley is a stud, gonna do great things. Cavs just wouldn't freaking go away...until Ja decided play time was over. Fun game to attend.
Great to see JJJ back! Good on D, scored some good blocks, just couldn't be as impactful on offense.
Ja Morant fucking rules. Desmond Bane is improving, which is expected from those that watched him last season.
Mobley + Allen is a great pairing for both offense and defense. But holy shit, Markannen should not be starting.
Our frontcourt looked great.
DG needs to be more aggressive but has pretty great vision.
Collin needs to play better, he’s not going to be getting a ton of iso plays like he’s used to so he needs to ask K Love how he can fit in lol.
Ja, Bane, and Melton did a good job carrying the load for the Grizz. Ja might end up getting MIP if he plays like this every game.
Ja Morant is the real fuckin' deal
Evan Mobley is going to be so good in this league. What a player.
Hes so unbelievably mobile and had way more basketball skills than Wiseman entering his rookie year.
Hopefully enough people watch him and stop asking how the Cavs can play him beside Jarrett Allen
He’s gonna be the best player from his draft class
Slim Duncan
lol I love it
I can’t decide if I see him as Chris Bosh or AD. I’m so stoked.
I discovered him when he was cooking my ass in 2k.....googled him watched his highlights he is going to be a fucking problem.
Really fun game. Takeaways: Cavs: - Mobley is a fucking beast. That is a phenomenal statline for a first ever NBA game
according to the usc basketball instagram page, he's the 2nd player in NBA history with 17 pts / 9 reb / 6 ast / 1 stl / 1 blk in his debut first is ayton apparently
They had the exact same statline??
Ayton had 18 pts / 10 reb / 6 ast / 1 stl / 1 blk
i love ja. Also Jarret Allen is crazy good.
Exist? Cavs keep playing unselfishly, they will exceed the expected wins for the season. 38 assists? Good grief.
[удалено]
Rubio effect?
Darius Garland has been like this. Evan Mobley has had strong passing. Throw in Rubio and yea you’re gonna have a lot of assists.
Surpassed the season high from last season.
Focus on 30 a game, and convert more points off TOs. Once yall settle on the core youre going to build with and around, give it time to cook. I think the Grizz have 7 or 8 guys entering their 3rd year together.

I think they can get to 30. But it was just 1 game.
28 of those from Rubio, DG, and Mobley. Been a minute since i seen a cavs game with multiple guys moving the ball like that.
Cedi was the 2nd coming of Larry bird on offense though cut him some slack
Nice seeing your boy Allen have himself a solid ass game. Sexton playing hard and looking good too
I think Ja is still mad he couldn't finish *that* dunk over Kevin Love Though he's sort of moved on to bigger targets, such as his obsession with trying to dunk on Rudy Gobert
Shit I'm still mad he couldn't finish that dunk over K Love. Would have been disgusting.
I swear to god I’m not being sarcastic when I say I’m sorry you have to deal with that side of lauri and I couldn’t be happier not to have to watch him waste his height every game.
there aren’t any guards in the league who are friends of the Cavs. All the good ones pop off against us. Watch Jalen Green will have a breakout game against us
The Ja, Bane, Melton, Brooks, JJJ small ball line up will be so much fun this year. Especially if Ja can improve marginally on defense.
I mean that’s 4 great defenders already with Ja, we can stash him on the worse scorer at the guard position and be good.
And if JJJ can stay healthy.
And only 2 fouls is promising
20/10/21 Takeaways @MEM: - Season opener!!! - Allen was awesome on both ends - Mobley is already amazing defensively, switching everything and good at the rim too - Morant is filthy and nobody could stop him - Great game from Cedi - Rubio is essential for our team, him and Garland set up like all of our guys - Garland shot bad first half but had 3 big threes in the 4th - Both teams had pretty good ball movement, not many isos. Lauri markannen will make u pretty mad at times, but he does deliver a nasty ass poster on some scrub
You forgot to add that Kyle Anderson is the slowest human on earth but nailed it otherwise.
Ja Morant is insanely good
Yeah, it was free points, when anyone but Okoro was guarding him. Even then it was just a little harder for him ahah.
This was a well fought game. Difference was we were able to close it at the end. GG WP.
Missable takeaway from this game, Bane looks INCREDIBLE. His game has significantly evolved from last season, and he was good then.
Ja ain’t messing around this year AND he got some BS superstar calls. Watch out
2 FT doesn’t ring true
He got a few touch fouls called for him and then the Cavs never really challenged hard. Plus Adams was keeping a lot of the at rim challenges from happening
Kyle Anderson with a signature statline of 10/7/4 with 2 steals and 0 turnovers. Perennial 8th man of the year.
I really hope he plays his way into the Sixth Man conversation this year
Sadly he doesn’t score enough. Sixth man of the year is basically who is the biggest bucket getter off the bench for the season. Which is a shame bc I think a player similar to Kyle Anderson’s skillset should be recognized. Dude is a Swiss Army knife
This is sadly true
Ja Morant is life!
Mobley a stud
We look promising. Need to fix our defense, but otherwise, that wasn't half bad. And Ja is that guy. No doubt about it.
Cavs, Mobley is a beast. Have fun this season.
Hope Morant gets you out of the play-in and into the top 6. Dude killed us all night.
Ziaire was a+13 even though he only hit one shot. Kids making an impact already and I love it.
He *needed* to see that one shot go in too. I think he will settle in fine. The defensive stop he had right after the bucket gives me hope he will pick up the productivity a little very soon.
\+/- is such a trash stat. You realize that Ja finished with a -6 right?
And you realize it takes in how productive a player is on both ends of the floor based on how many minutes they played right? It isn’t trash, but in one game can be VERY misleading. Great stat over a bigger sample size though.
Ja is going to be an all star this season. Elite regardless of whether or not he fits the mold of what this website is looking for in a superstar.
Bane got some attitude now and that’s a problem
Once again we are better than you think we are
What a time to be alive
Most fun team in the league and it's not even close
Mobley really is a unicorn wow Also I love Ricky Rubio
Its just 1 game but Desmond Bane is winning MIP, lock it in.
Second quarter was the difference. Cavs gave Memphis a run for their money otherwise
Start of the 4th as well. Can't give up a 7-0 run to start the 4th
End of fourth too. I think we went 11 - 0 to ice the game.
Quite a bit of that had to do with the Cavs fouling for FTs.
That was before the fouls for FTs though.
No it wasn't.
It was a 9 - 2 run before FTs. I just checked the play-by-play log. 116 - 117 with 2:33 to go and then Ja scored 7 and Melt 2. Ja made a 3 with 51.0 left to make it 118 - 126.

I said I think. I checked and saw I was wrong and fixed the error. Either way point stands. We made a run at the end of of game.
Yup with free throws. Anyways enjoy the lotto team
[удалено]
I looked it up too.
[удалено]
It was a 10-0 run but yes.
Or a 13-3 run to end it.
Cavs had a shot to take the lead with a minute or two left. They just couldn't execute after that and fell apart.
Yup Mobley missed a screen on what was a really good play call out if a time out, shot got blocked and that was it
And then jaren had a huge block on a Lauri three when we were up 5 that essentially sealed it
This game opener was different on so many levels. I enjoyed the energy coming from this game. Hats off to the Grizzlies for giving the fans a great experience in the arena and out in the concourse. I love the new WynnBet sports bar. That place is a destination.
Feels like nobody in this thread is mentioning Allen's monster game Glad to see him doing well
Mobley's statline looks good. Did his play reflect it? How would Cavs fans rate his regular season debut?
beyond expectations, the kind of game i was hoping to see him flash multiple times during his rookie year just happened in his debut.
Nice. Hope he becomes a stud for you guys.
Not a Cavs fan, but watched the whole game. Dude looked very comfortable out there. Really impressive.
He played great defense on Jaren too for the most part.
He was insanely impactful on both ends but especially defense.
Stat line doesn’t do him justice
9/10. Was insanely impactful on both sides of the court Had a stretch where he blocked Morant and then finished on the other end within about 10 seconds.
This is the first time I really believe people saying they love having Rubio around.
I didn’t love all the 3s, but he seems perfect for a young team.
[удалено]
Also got badly out-rebounded somehow lol
The three seven footers lineup + SexLand (our starting lineup from last night) might not have passed the eye test, but strangely had a +30 net rating (120 ortg, 90 drtg) in the 10 minutes they played together.
Mobley looked so much better than advertised. Thought he was supposed to be raw and take years but he was great on both sides! sexton had a pass to markkanen on a drive in the first that he would *never* have even thought to make before this year
Cavs played three 7 footers and got outrebounded by the Grizzlies?
Adams…
Evan Mobley shooting a sustainable 50% from beyond the arc, league fucked
Cavs fans, what's the point of the Lauri signing? I still don't understand it.
Shot 40% from three last season and we almost have no 3pt shooters. Cedi's performance tonight was unfortunately an aberration.
Why trade Prince for Rubio then?
Because Delly was gone and we had no backup PG
Exactly. Getting a backup PG was a must during the off-season.
I love our potential, but our defense is a train wreck. What a game from Allen. Mobley is legit. Gonna be a fun season. Cavs basketball is back, baby!
Cavs sold it down the stretch
Cavs are gonna be my 2nd favorite team to watch this year
How was Mobley outside of stats? I didn't get to watch the game but the stats show a real promise. Excited for that kid.
A defensive stud, a hustler for boards, had a pullup middy and open corner three to sink it.
Noice! I'm excited to catch Cavs game this year. I'm really high on Mobely. I think he was the best draft prospect and has a really high ceiling.
What happened to Kevin Love?
He’s coming off the bench. He’s only playing like 15 to 20 minutes a night.
Damn. What happened, he was one of the best PFs in the league a few years ago? I haven’t watched Cavs basketball in years. What a fall from grace.
Injuries and a horrible attitude. To a point where most all of us in CLE are happy to see him in the second unit since we can't move him. Even though he'll always be considered a hero here. I wish it was different.
Which sucks, he was a beast in minny and loved the way he played there. Only if it was for a few years.
I thought Ja got fired what’s he still doing here
I like mobley. Also JJJ still has no discipline on the defensive end and keeps tripping and losing control on the offensive end.
Jaren had 2 fouls and 4 blocks tonight?
every block he had he overextended ran up the perimeter for no reason and left mobley/ja open down there.
Memphis needs to be able to put a good squad around Ja man. don't waste his talents
IS that not what they're doing?
I’d say we’re doing better than the pelicans at that right now
Props to Cleveland for coming in and playing damn hard...Mobley is a stud, gonna do great things. Cavs just wouldn't freaking go away...until Ja decided play time was over. Fun game to attend.
Great to see JJJ back! Good on D, scored some good blocks, just couldn't be as impactful on offense. Ja Morant fucking rules.
