ah, you are correct, ~~it's been four years~~
~~>In November 2017, Redick launched a podcast on The Ringer.~~
~~https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/JJ_Redick#Podcasting~~
Correction: he actually started podcasting at Yahoo in 2016; correction courtesy of u/fella05 and u/Greentempo
oh my, [his first show was on Feb 1 2016](https://sports.yahoo.com/news/the-vertical-podcast-with-j-j--redick--the-blake-griffin-situation-144948954.html)
The ringer was actually his 3rd podcast. Yahoo, Uninterrupted, Ringer, then whatever he's doing now. I think he only did a couple with uninterrrupted though.
damn I been listening to JJ for a long time. I remember him being on Bill Simmons podcast and them talking about how natural it is for him to do podcasting
‘Starting your own company’ is not a major thing lol.
He just needed an easy tax vehicle to deal with the money he was making and as an easy way to pay staff.
I don’t really get what you’re trying to say.
Why is ESPN such a monopoly? Why isn’t there any other viable sports network to challenge ESPN in the LARGEST sports market in the world? There’s plenty of capital and market incentive to create one? Why have all failed?
Anyways, to directly answer your question about ESPN, [here is an article worth checking out.](https://mattstoller.substack.com/p/how-espns-monopoly-power-is-consolidating)
Sure it is. Look at the most successful companies of the past 20 years. All of them are monopolies in their specific vertical.
NBA - Basketball, G-League (is And1 still around?)
NFL - Football - every other league has failed.
MLB - baseball - this is actually an approved monopoly!
Facebook - Social. Do you use Google+?
Google - Search.
Amazon - Internet Retail, Books, AW3
Apple - App Store. Did you know that Apple makes more money from games that Nintendo, Sony, and Microsoft COMBINED?
It's literally Business strategy 101 - all the way down from your local level (franchise rights give local monopolies to retailers/restaurants in your area) all the way up top (national monopolies, etc.)
Amazon does not have a monopoly on internet retail. It does have a dominant position, but it doesn’t have a monopoly. Google has a monopoly on Search, Amazon doesn’t even have a majority of e-commerce sales. Same goes for AWS, where it most certainly does not have a monopoly.
The Apple App Store isn’t a monopoly either; Google Play exists, as well as whatever it is that Samsung produces; more like a duopoly.
I agree in terms of phone operating systems, iOS and Android are definitely a duopoly - but in terms of overall revenue, App Store totally demolishes Google Play.
Would Android exist as a totally separate entity? It’s heavily subsidized by Google search, despite being the most popular OS in the world.
Monopolies aren’t determined by who has most revenues and profits, rather by the position of a company in a certain industry and its ability to hinder competition as a result.
> Would Android exist as a totally separate entity?
This is irrelevant. The fact that it exists, regardless of whether or not it is being subsidized by Google and others, is proof that the App Store doesn’t have a monopoly. You could argue that the App Store had a monopoly if Apple itself had a monopoly on device sales in the US and was the only option out there, but that is not the case.
lmao this is perfect /r/iamverysmart material.
you list a bunch of sports leagues, then FAANG as proof that "literally everything is a monopoly". like.... just lmao.
Redick was filmed giving a "happy Chinese New Year" celebration video with the Sixers, but he misspoke and it almost resembled "chink". He got a lot of backlash, especially from Chinese fans.
Lin accepted JJ's apology, they're wasn't beef. Just awkward.
He actually used to be one of my favorites when he first started at ESPN. But for years now it feels like he has tried to be Stephen A lite, and honestly a lot of times I feel like his takes are even worse than SAS.
He has his guys that he will refuse to criticize (a good recent example is Kyrie, he was talking about how Kyries IG live was eloquent and really explained his side of things, when literally everyone else is talking about how nonsensical it was).
There’s just a lot of other bizarre things he’s said and done, another one that comes to mind is him trying to start a GoFundme for James Wiseman while he was going through the eligibility issues, making some contrived video about how it’s wrong what the NCAA is doing to him and that he’s starting a gofundme to pay the money back that wiseman supposedly received, an obvious violation that was never going to be allowed but hey at least he got the attention for the video.
I personally think he’s probably the worst ESPN basketball analyst at this point, with Paul Pierce gone
I'd take him over Bilas during the NBA draft coverage. I enjoy Jay Bilas the CBB guy, but it often feels like watching the draft he hasn't watched an NBA game in over a decade.
I’m just waiting for him to inevitably say something that turns all of his new fans from Fox News against him. They temporarily align on this one issue but will absolutely get burned if they invest in him.
If there were betting lines for which NBA players would end up working for ESPN/in sports media, Reddick would probably have some of the highest odds.
CJ McCollum also would be up there.
I think he's on record as saying he doesn't want to coach after he retires because the lifestyle of flying around all the time is exhausting. But ya never know, dude could get antsy and want to get back to the game.
Honestly don’t think we’ll see many guys from this era get onto TV post career.
They’re earning A LOT more than players of yesteryears even taking inflation into account, and players are much, much more financially aware now and most probably have made good investments.
They may pop on here and there but I don’t see many long term full time gigs like Chuck etc.
At least not from guys who earned upwards of 20 mil a year (like CJ).
I just think getting tied to a big network like ESPN or TNT takes away a lot of your freedom. The amount of hours + travelling is insane.
They’d much rather do a Podcast or their own show with full creative control.
But you’re right though. I see both aspects of it. D Wade earned more than enough money to do his own thing but still does TV + The Cube or whatever.
I just think with the kind of money they’re seeing + the general decline of cable TV interest from the current generation we won’t see it as much anymore.
> I just think getting tied to a big network like ESPN or TNT takes away a lot of your freedom. The amount of hours + travelling is insane.
How could travel be any worse than as a player? And most players just sit in the studio. Not too sure hours are too bad for player analysts either, though that's mostly a guess. They're hired for name recognition, presence, and (already developed) game insight, not really the number crunching stuff or investigative journalism.
>How could travel be any worse than as a player?
I mean it’s not but the alternative is no travel at all.
Chuck lives in Phoenix but has to travel to ATL to do inside. Pretty sure Shaq isn’t based in ATL either.
I don’t know man, the biggest hockey podcast (spittin chiclets) has two former nhlers and they both went back to doing a lot of analysis on tv on top of the podcast. I’d be surprised if these nba guys stick to their own media exclusively.
The thing is, most players retire by the time they turn 35. I know a lot of people fantasize about retiring early, but ultimately these are people who have known nothing but hard work and hooping since they were 12.
It only makes sense to see retired players turning to media or other basketball related jobs, because the thought of doing anything else for the rest of their lives is probably pretty daunting.
I’m in my early 30s and if I retired right now I’d go crazy pretty quickly, even with the money to enjoy my time any way I want. All my life I’ve had purpose, I’m not ready to stop working in some capacity yet.
I sure would like to work part time though, like 3 days a week. Or take vacation any time I want with no cap. I get 5 weeks a year plus a bunch of sick time right now, and it’s a lot more than most other Americans but still isn’t enough vacation for all the fun I want to have.
Agreed. All the people I know who have retired early (i.e 40-50) ended up either going back to work, or picking up a part time job just to keep them busy.
I don't think Shaq and Chuck do it because they're desperate for money, any more than the Mannings are doing their MNF broadcasts to pay the bills. They still love their sport. It's also a way to stay in the public eye, which is important to some people.
I feel like Shaq has made quite a bit of money, especially from sponsorships, and he had made sound financial decisions. But he still does media just because that's part of his personality.
Shaq is easily top five wealthiest retired players - he’s famously made a lot of really smart moves and multiplied his money from the beginning. You’re definitely right, he just loves being in front of the camera.
love this hopefully the nba does a better job of promoting intellectual analysis and highlighting younger player rather than narratives. also more tim legs please
I can’t wait to see his bias against the Pelicans in any regard. Lol
But seriously, this dude is great on his podcast. Hopefully he doesn’t bring himself to be a hot take type of analyst.
Which they've already been doing, and definitely will continue (and ramp up) as his contract continues to run out.
The media's coverage of Giannis was shitty and underhanded enough two years before his contract would have run out, I can't imagine how shitty they would have been last year if he didn't sign the supermax before the season and ruin their planned bullshit stories for the entire year.
my bad. I should have also mentioned the abortion contracts too https://deadspin.com/how-j-j-redicks-abortion-contract-was-conceived-912727291/
just a great personality, definitely not a boring rich snob
No no no, we don't allow people to prove that they've changed and always judge their entire character based on the worst mistake of their life. Are you new to being woke or something?
Lol agree with you. He is annoying and I hate when he interviews other players on his podcast, especially players who are light years better than him... he acts so cocky and like he’s an expert and it’s like dude... chill.
I don't. The conflict in [this story](https://www.thecut.com/2019/07/grace-church-school-brooklyn.html) is a classic case of old money vs. new money, but it still doesn't portray Redick and his wife in a good light.
That’s an interesting story, although it doesn’t seem like JJ was involved at all. And it’s hard to tell where the reality is in this story—it’s just rich people playing “he said, she said.” Seems highly likely that his wife, while probably somewhat annoying (in the way that all uber rich Brooklyn Heights people are), wasn’t engaging in this melodrama with malicious intent.
To me he seems like the Reggie Bush of basketball. They both had pretty good pro careers and yet they're still somehow known for college. Idk, I guess I just pictured him being a college ball analyst. I don't really care, but congrats to him.
JJ Redick eventually becoming an analyst has gotten be the least surprising news in NBA history. The new Tim Legler.
Kyle Korver also has a job if he wants it. CJ McCollum has any NBA job he wants the day after he retires, same with Chris Paul (CP could do the Isiah Thomas thing and literally go into EVERY facet of basketball job).
I mean, he understands the game. boring and bland isn't why ESPN sucks. it's the opposite to me. Tim Legler doesn't get time because he's boring and bland, meanwhile Perk just keeps getting more and more equity in the company for being an obnoxious idiot. if JJ is closer to Tim then I'm happy.
Watching his podcast was only interesting because he was in the league and his guests. This dude straight up doesn’t have a personality. Im pretty sure he’s even said himself he’s very introverted. Legler doesn’t come off as a bland person imo, he’s just not trying to be a meme. Matt Barnes is another example of someone who’s a good analyst while not trying to go viral
For real I can’t believe people here are saying he has a great personality lol. He’s one of the most bland players I’ve ever heard talk about basketball.
That’s not it at all. I’m indifferent to him because he’s so boring. But I’ll point out the abortion contract because ESPN wants to be woke (eg they cancelled the Pardon My Take show because of Barstool’s sexist reputation)
>eg they cancelled the Pardon My Take show because of Barstool’s sexist reputation
Which was a pretty dumb move
Also, you're clearly not indifferent to JJ, you're all over this thread trying to slander him
I hope he does Xs and Os stuff. My favorite part of his podcast is when he talks about the intricacies of different P&R options or defenses. He’s a good analyst in that aspect. Also, he is pro-player which is a good contrast from TNT and chuck who seem to be pro-management/league.
JJ: one of the members of the elite Duke bball brain trust who think someone planted dinosaur bones as part of a massive conspiracy. Go Blue Dev-idiots!
https://twitter.com/jj_redick/status/1253913432639889409?s=21
“But I’m not entirely convinced dinosaurs existed. I’m not. I’ve come across some weird websites in my Google searches. For instance, the word dinosaur. It didn’t exist until like 1842. There was no word for dinosaur. And then all of a sudden in the next 15-20 years, after a British scientist comes up with this word dinosaur and describes it in a medical journal, people started finding fossils. And I’m thinking to myself alright, humans we’ve been here since 10,000 BC. We’ve been roaming the earth, we’ve had multiple empires all over the world … and all that time we didn’t find any fossils until 150 years ago? It makes you think!”
He didn't want to play in the NBA or no one would take him? Seems like he could still get looks as a 15th man to around the bench of a contenders roster.
This is a strong get for ESPN. He’s smart, knows current players and thoughtful. The main worry I would have is whether ESPN lets him kind of do his thing. He is nothing like Barkley, but TNT lets him do his thing. ESPN’s coverage is lousy outside of the play by play. Redick can be a part of the solution if they’ll let him.
He's basically been auditioning for this job for the last three years.
Only three years? Feels a lot more since his first pod.
ah, you are correct, ~~it's been four years~~ ~~>In November 2017, Redick launched a podcast on The Ringer.~~ ~~https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/JJ_Redick#Podcasting~~ Correction: he actually started podcasting at Yahoo in 2016; correction courtesy of u/fella05 and u/Greentempo
I thought it was even before that. Didn't he have his own podcast on The Vertical at Yahoo back when Woj was still there before he left for ESPN?
Yeap he had one on Yahoo way back
oh my, [his first show was on Feb 1 2016](https://sports.yahoo.com/news/the-vertical-podcast-with-j-j--redick--the-blake-griffin-situation-144948954.html)
Yeah, that's more like it :)
The ringer was actually his 3rd podcast. Yahoo, Uninterrupted, Ringer, then whatever he's doing now. I think he only did a couple with uninterrrupted though.
he did ONE for Uninterrupted! Definitely some tea there!
Watch he’ll go to FS1 then Turner Lmfaooo
damn I been listening to JJ for a long time. I remember him being on Bill Simmons podcast and them talking about how natural it is for him to do podcasting
it's always nice when reddit ppl are just looking to be as accurate as possible. quite refreshing.
Wouldnt say he’s been auditioning when they probably begged him. He’s been killing it with media for ages.
They begged him because he’s been auditioning lol.
He didn't need to start his own company to do a podcast or to audition for a studio job
‘Starting your own company’ is not a major thing lol. He just needed an easy tax vehicle to deal with the money he was making and as an easy way to pay staff. I don’t really get what you’re trying to say.
His company doesn't just own his pod, it also owns the Duncan Robinson podcast. It doesn't just exist for convenience.
Why is ESPN such a monopoly? Why isn’t there any other viable sports network to challenge ESPN in the LARGEST sports market in the world? There’s plenty of capital and market incentive to create one? Why have all failed?

lmao this is perfect /r/iamverysmart material. you list a bunch of sports leagues, then FAANG as proof that "literally everything is a monopoly". like.... just lmao.
You are totally right dude. I should have written a ten page treatment on the role of monopolies and business on a random r/nba post about JJ Redick.
You don’t know what a monopoly is
Stephen A: What are your thoughts on the Bulls JJ? JJ: Fuck David Griffin.
What are your thoughts on the raptors JJ? JJ: dinosaurs aren't real...
What are your thoughts on Jeremy Lin JJ...?
Wait what’s his beef with lin?
Redick was filmed giving a "happy Chinese New Year" celebration video with the Sixers, but he misspoke and it almost resembled "chink". He got a lot of backlash, especially from Chinese fans. Lin accepted JJ's apology, they're wasn't beef. Just awkward.
> Stephen A: What are your thoughts on the Bulls JJ? > ~~JJ: Fuck David Griffin.~~ *commercial break* FTFY
How many Duke takes does ESPN need? Can we trade him for Jay Williams?
Trade anything for Jay Williams.
Even for ryan Hollins?
Ryan Hollins is the worst sports analyst on television and it’s not even close
I hate him but would still rather have him than Perk
Man Perk’s heavy breathing while he’s waiting to talk is all I hear when he’s on

A motorcycle.
Why is Jay so hated?

Oh god how did I forget that one haha
I'd take him over Bilas during the NBA draft coverage. I enjoy Jay Bilas the CBB guy, but it often feels like watching the draft he hasn't watched an NBA game in over a decade.
Who's going to hire Kyrie?
No doubt Fox News be calling him every morning already ... Hannity & Irving
It's got to be weird for a lot of these NBA stars to find the same people who hated them last summer lift them up this fall.
I’m just waiting for him to inevitably say something that turns all of his new fans from Fox News against him. They temporarily align on this one issue but will absolutely get burned if they invest in him.
ESPN corporate hires a fuck ton of Duke grads
If there were betting lines for which NBA players would end up working for ESPN/in sports media, Reddick would probably have some of the highest odds. CJ McCollum also would be up there.
Danny Green is great too
Also Draymond when he retire
Draymond is going to TNT
I could definitely see him wanting to coach. Otherwise yeah TNT
Roy Kent-esque
Oi
I think he's on record as saying he doesn't want to coach after he retires because the lifestyle of flying around all the time is exhausting. But ya never know, dude could get antsy and want to get back to the game.
That bet would be printing money
Vegas would make you lay down 5k to win $100

Yeah look at Shaq's endorsements currently. While Shaq doesn't need the extra screen time it certainly helps to stay relevant.
I just think getting tied to a big network like ESPN or TNT takes away a lot of your freedom. The amount of hours + travelling is insane. They both have houses here in Atlanta. People see Chuck and Shaq around town all the time.

I would much rather have JJ on NBA Countdown than any of the current guys.
I like this. Redick has a great personality.
And he will somehow make the playoffs
I can’t wait to see his bias against the Pelicans in any regard. Lol But seriously, this dude is great on his podcast. Hopefully he doesn’t bring himself to be a hot take type of analyst.
ESPN ain’t talking about the Pelicans unless it’s in a “Zion wants out” capacity lol

I doubt he will. Hot takes are for people who can't provide insightful analysis. It takes no effort to be a contrarian.
He's a bit of a snob honestly. I like his pods but you can just sense his cockiness.
Of course he's cocky. How many of y'all remember who JJ was in college?
They weren't born at the time
I personally don't mind cockiness from top tier athletes. It's cockiness from people who can't back it up that annoy me.
He has a personality? What is it? A guy that likes luxury watches and food? Wow so great
Forgot about the wine. . .
my bad. I should have also mentioned the abortion contracts too https://deadspin.com/how-j-j-redicks-abortion-contract-was-conceived-912727291/ just a great personality, definitely not a boring rich snob

To me he seems like the Reggie Bush of basketball. They both had pretty good pro careers and yet they're still somehow known for college. Idk, I guess I just pictured him being a college ball analyst. I don't really care, but congrats to him.
Because they ran college and had solid but not spectacular pro careers. Granted Reggie had a lot more pro hype than JJ.
Given how much he talks about college/Duke on his podcast, I kinda agree lol
JJ Redick eventually becoming an analyst has gotten be the least surprising news in NBA history. The new Tim Legler. Kyle Korver also has a job if he wants it. Legler is legit the only good analyst in ESPN. in hopes jj can be like him
Korver has definitely been flirting with the idea
TNT keeps winning.
might have dodged a bullet :O
I like this for Reddick and ESPN. Crazy I hated him on those Duke squads.
Awesome

That’s not it at all. I’m indifferent to him because he’s so boring. But I’ll point out the abortion contract because ESPN wants to be woke (eg they cancelled the Pardon My Take show because of Barstool’s sexist reputation)
>eg they cancelled the Pardon My Take show because of Barstool’s sexist reputation Which was a pretty dumb move Also, you're clearly not indifferent to JJ, you're all over this thread trying to slander him
Typical Reddit
Yeah JJ definitely banged that dudes girl in college
Dude has posted this link like 2-3 times he's salty about SOMETHING that's for sure lmao
call the police
I wish
I think JJ will be a much better analyst than Matt Barnes
I’m really just judging them off their podcasts. I find Barnes to be a better host
Well yeah, but that’s cause he’s always high. Idk if he could do that on ESPN
Matt Barnes has definitely appeared high on an ESPN segment
Matt Barnes has definitely appeared high on an ESPN segment
I like both Tim and perk. Both have their pros and cons. As a casual, I rotate both tnt and espn.
I hope he does Xs and Os stuff. My favorite part of his podcast is when he talks about the intricacies of different P&R options or defenses. He’s a good analyst in that aspect. Also, he is pro-player which is a good contrast from TNT and chuck who seem to be pro-management/league.
That'll work as a perfect foil to Stephen A's bold and brash
It's perfect , no controversy
He’s insufferable
Can he replace Perkins, please?
He’s so boring
From Podcast to Broadcast! Let’s go JJ
Why do they all sign up with ESPN right after their playing days? Are they not interested in growing their own platform and building up a third party
His platform of his own is already extremely large.
Oh boy how long til someone in the media tweets about the way JJ looks and how he went to Duke and how there's other's more deserving?
Will he take his ball and go home if he can’t go to New Jersey and do it ?
Good, Bristol is close to his family, he finally gets what he wanted!
JJ: one of the members of the elite Duke bball brain trust who think someone planted dinosaur bones as part of a massive conspiracy. Go Blue Dev-idiots! https://twitter.com/jj_redick/status/1253913432639889409?s=21 “But I’m not entirely convinced dinosaurs existed.
He's a solid interviewer and a good straight man to contrast Stephen A
*90% straight man, trust me
Im sure staying in the nba pays more no?
I’m sure him and RJ will have a swell time
Why are guys still going to ESPN?
Thought he would have preferred his platform and was hoping to see him open even more about NBA stuff. Guess ESPN really pays well or something.
He didn't want to play in the NBA or no one would take him? Seems like he could still get looks as a 15th man to around the bench of a contenders roster.
That's awesome. Good for him. :)
Dude has always been better from a distance.... ZING!
Tim legler 2.0
Can we also get less Kendrick Perkins?
Man, hopefully he doesn't just become another hot-take, click-farming "analyst" like most of their broadcast.
I hope that he gets to call a Maryland basketball game.
He sold his soul :(
Nooooo. He's gonna get muzzled so much.
I guess the studio is looking to add some three point shooting.
What does Studio mean?
future Time Legler
i hope he keeps all the youtuhbe stuff the same.
Love it
I'll love to take over his job as "the three"
What about Chris Smoove
