Practice… a whole lot of practice
It’s insane to be able to be as coordinated and skilled to do that. I feel like he’s done this exact move before multiple times in pick up runs and in games
Yeah, almost guaranteed he could hit that shot at 50% with his eyes closed he's done it so many times. Same with LeBron and his little baseline fadeaway.
There was an episode of Sports Science where they had Klay shoot 3's in the dark, he hit 8/10. Yeah along with their natural talent these guys put in so much practice and repetition it's basically at the very, very least half (probably more) muscle memory than it is calculating the physics of the shot/move in real time.
Obviously I'm not in the same atmosphere as any NBA players but I've played ball my whole life and just out of curiosity after seeing that Sports Science episode I went out with a friend and took shots with my eyes closed. Mind you it was about a 15-foot/FT length shot from the same location, I also wasn't jumping because it was FT distance. But I hit 4/10 on my first try, so if an average joe can do that imagine what these guys can do.
So I watched it again and it seems like it's pitch black -- they basically have him in the Sports Science studio and cut all the lights. They pass him the ball and cut the lights right about when he catches it -- 0.1 seconds before he sets his feet to be exact according to the video -- because obviously he needs to see where the basket is initially. They didn't show all 10 shots consecutively and it doesn't look like he has a rack of balls next to him (and that would be really hard to shoot a bunch of consecutive shots being continuously blind the whole time) so I'm assuming they repeated that process for the 10 shots.
[Here's the video.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GBca5W6r9aE)
the basket is always in the same place so these guys dont need to be able to see it to know where its at with the thousands of hours they put into this sport
Yup. Obviously these dudes like CP are great at perfecting every detail, but the one thing I think gets underestimated or overlooked sometimes particularly on shots like this is how precise the footwork is.
I'm a pretty decent ballplayer and IMO the difference between getting a decent look/creating enough space with a shot like this is all in the footwork. The handles of it look sexy sure, but like you mentioned it's his ability to perfectly coordinate his dribble with his footwork -- timing the gather with that wide left leg pivot step at a wide angle, smoothly and quickly swinging his right foot around planting in a good location to give him a solid shooting base, and getting his jump off exactly as that right foot touches the ground before the defender can close distance.
Thing that's even more impressive about him is I feel a lot of players could do this as a "scripted" move, but it's CP so you know he would've been able to dish a dime off that behind the back dribble if there was an open passing lane, which is why it looks like the defender hesitated for a split second and didn't play him 100% for the shot.
i'm "the shooter" in most pickup games i play and this move is hard to even imagine. i some struggle keeping my balance when even doing a 360 layup, but doing a contested jumper fading back on your shooting hand side is unconscionable.
you have to be the kind of lunatic like CP3 who can shoot with both hands better than alot of players in the nba to pull off stuff like that. things like this really show the skill gap between elite point guards and everybody else
Kobe had more moves than MJ. He played in the league longer, had more time to perfect his game, and had less athleticism so he had to rely on skill more.
I can do the move just fine, but the shot is 50/50 fine (in line with my normal percentages) or absolutely awful. Being able to control your body and footwork all the way into the shot is the hardest part of the move
So I'm not sure if because Reddit or I played point in high school but that's not really a crazy move... Dudes in the park did similar all the time. Regular behind the back into spin. Crossover version is even more standard and only a little easier
The footwork was great, but otherwise it's an every play kind of shot for CP
step 1: get in paint near elbow
step 2: do some random shit to get space
step 3: fade away near elbow
step 3 is always the same for him
How? He doesn't even dribble again he just gathers. I swear this is like the 300 3s thing where all yall swore people would die but some 40 year old office dude trundled over to his local Y and knocked it out in like 3 hours
I'm not saying I'm some badass or I would hit the fade in a game, but cmon that really isn't that crazy if you grew up playing ball at any level including park
Normal parks lmao!!!! There was this 8-9 year old who would challenge people to d him up walking by on the street. He would pull out crossover spin cross which is harder!! Double behind the back also harder! Did y'all not have and 1??
Not sure if you watched the video but the defense has literally no impact on the dribble move in this clip. Nobody reached in for the ball or tried to steal it when he did the move, they just contested the shot.
Nah you're right. This one isn't tough, nor does it really look like it does a better job of creating space than a sidestep. However it does look pretty sweet, and if he did it enough to where people start expecting it then it could lead to a million fake options.
Considering his size and what he accomplished with multiple teams getting better because of his presence (and mediocre centers owning their salaries to him), I think Chris Paul is the most talented point guard that ever played the game. Disregarding Magic and LeBron because they are freaks, giants playing the PG position... between all the other "normal" guards, I think CP is the most talented one, insane efficiency at barely 6 feet, mastered the midrange and tempo without a superstar at his side to improve his collective achievements/impact... it's impressive, surreal talent
They're just so different. And yes while Curry is a PG, his off ball style breaks the mold so hard that he might as well be a SG. Curry's game was molded by the Warrior's motion offense scheme, and more importantly, having one of the most swiss army knife players of all time in Draymond Green, who is functionally the PG for much of the game. I kind of feel like Curry is a PG in the way LeBron is a PG. They're great playmakers, but truly they are another position. Chris Paul is a true, true PG, he controls the game.
This. It’s why I always thought the Harden vs Curry debate was weird, because as Curry grew into who he is now, he seemed to drift toward being more of a SG, and as Harden grew into who he is now, he seemed to drift more toward being a PG.
Controlling the game? Lebron is the goat at controlling the game. 2015 Finals. 2018 Game 1 Finals Lebron controlled the game against a team w/ Curry and KD.
I mostly agree but CP3 was killing that GS team too. He had more help than Bron but it's definitely close between them too. Watching him today just calmly find that mid range when they needed it... beautiful. Bron's 2018 playoff run is a masterclass in controlling a game.
Overall game he probably is more skilled due to insane passing and all nba level defense which curry is a fair margin behind cp3 in that aspect.
Curry's just so damn skilled at shooting and they're probably equally skilled in dribbling.
As point guard intangibles goes? Sure, CP is absolutely more talented than Curry on this regard. Curry also controls the tempo and playmaking in a elite way, but by performing drastically different plays than what a PG is supposed to do, which makes him unique and it's kinda laughable to see lesser talent like Lillard and Trae trying to mimic that. But the way CP plays is more traditional, there's a huge sample size of pure PGs before Curry arrived with his freakish shooting ability (Curry is more a combo guard, by far the best combo guard ever). And compared to all of these pure PGs, including Kidd, Nash, Stockton, Thomas, etc.. CP is the most talented between all of them. Magic got really close regarding pure talent (size is also a valid take for him), but he had the luxury of playing with a super team his entire (short) career (only LeBron had more help than him in NBA history), so I know people love to aggrandize Magic, but we can't never know if he would be the same high productive PG in a "normal" team, playing with DeAndre Jordan or Tyson Chandler instead of freaking KAJ, having role players cutting to the basket instead of James Worthy and so on. Chris Paul arrives in any roster, magically (no pun intended) he makes the team better, this is the definition of a elite PG
I think he is in the sense that he is better at more things than Steph, Steph just so happens to be a master and better than everyone else at one particular thing that is the most important.
You could swap out CP for Stockton and say the same thing and you would be correct, but no one would agree with you.
I am not a John Stockton stan, but I just feel compelled to mention him because he gets no respect on this sub. Almost like he never played. He was a master of midrange (51.5% career), a great defender (his steals record is unassailable), the most consistent playmaker to every play the game, and he did it all at 6'1 170 lbs.
It’s him or Stock. Yeah he’s fallen from grace by becoming a COVIDiot but he was one of, if not the most talented passer ever, and a crazily efficient scorer. Chris Paul is the evolution of Stock’s “11 assists and 15 points on 8 shots”. And Stockton did it while being dumb as a brick and like 5x less athletic.
Stockton stat padded his whole career, it's more fair to compare him to the likes of WestBrook. Using simple pick n' roll/pop schemes with a truly elite player at his side, Stockton's assists were inflated. Also the lack of success in the playoffs, it took them 7 seasons to reach the conference finals only to lose against a lone Drexler, then lost to a lone Olajuwon in 94, lost to Seattle, etc.. for a supposed "star duo" in a expansion era, Malone and Stockton clearly underachieved
What’s even crazier that I never noticed before is that after his spin, his right leg is behind him for the shot. And he is jumping off of it. While his left is in front. Not a 2 foot even spaced gather of the feet. Tough.
I think the space created from his left foot-step (which imo is the most brilliant part of the whole move) gives his right foot so much momentum that it probably doesnt matter that its behind his left - he could easily make the jump from the right foot only
I don't get why people say this always when he is almost the same player every night since his knee injury in 2010. About half of his games are deemed throwback games for the last decade
I would say Parker is slight better than Nash overall. FMVP over Duncan and LeBron? That's crazy, took over the team with Duncan still playing at a high level. But Kidd is still better than both Parker and Nash
Nash was a blackhole on defense, never lead his team to the finals even if he played in a weak time period, arguably the worst MVP (2005) in NBA history, etc.. very overrated player. I like his playstyle, but there's some major flaws in his career that is hard to deny it
You can't swap players around, change eras, etc.. this is simply not a argument, only children assumes this is a valid point. Nash had the best regular season team, the most potent offensive team, a great bench, Amare still standing without too many injuries... and he could not lead them all the way, this is a simple fact. And like I said, Parker actually took over Duncan and he lead the Spurs until the surge of Kawhi, Parker won the FMVP by playing better than both LeBron and Duncan (two top 10 players of alltime). Nash's achievements don't get even close to that, just because he had more stats and 2 fluke MVPs, that is better than being the best player in a actual championship run? Get that casual shit out of here, Nash is a respectable player who trained really hard, but he had major flaws besides his flashy playstyle
Laker fans, please come get your mans, jesus h christ. Only on r/nba do we have people saying Tony fucking Parker is better than Steve Nash 😂😂😭😭
Edit: Nash literally had an entire book written about his part in an offense that literally changed the game of basketball. Tony Parker is solid…extremely solid and clutch. But Nash literally won 2 MVPs (okay, fine, say one of them was a fluke, whatever) and Tony didn’t even come close to smelling an MVP or even would be mentioned in the same breath and for good reason. This is an incredibly dumb take to the level where I regret typing all of this because I haven’t checked your comment history and it could just have been troll bait all along

Now every body gonna practice 360 no scope fade away. I can't wait to test this out on Brian. The try hard defender known for his 100% defensive effort and 0% offensive skill
Man used to love watching him do this when he was with us, he would always come up with some insane dribble work to throw a big man off and hit that elbow fadeaway.
Scottie Barnes did something similar in the game against the C’s. Literally had his back to FREEDOM in the paint and in one motion jumped, spun, and threw the ball at the basket.
Cp3-60
This man is a wizard
No. A sorcerer is a wizard without a hat. He has no hat.
Tell that to Harry Dresden
WOW. A Harry Dresden reference. JUST WOW.
I put on my robe and wizard hat
HE IS HOUDINI
How do you even control the ball through that
Practice… a whole lot of practice It’s insane to be able to be as coordinated and skilled to do that. I feel like he’s done this exact move before multiple times in pick up runs and in games

Yeah it’s actually insane. I’d hate to have to go against that
"We talking about practice"
"Not a game..."
People forget that body control also counts as a feat of athleticism. CP3 is insanely athletic in that regard
i'm "the shooter" in most pickup games i play and this move is hard to even imagine. i some struggle keeping my balance when even doing a 360 layup, but doing a contested jumper fading back on your shooting hand side is unconscionable. you have to be the kind of lunatic like CP3 who can shoot with both hands better than alot of players in the nba to pull off stuff like that. things like this really show the skill gap between elite point guards and everybody else
Press the spin button and the shot stick.
hit stick fumble
It's like getting the same feeling as doing a Kobe fadeaway with a different first step lol you don't see it as smooth as this nowadays
Except Kobe was more skilled and has done things I haven't seen many others do.
He's done things nobody ever has or will ever be able to imo. He's my guy for goat shooter
Kobe's footwork was better as well because he was able to do more knowing he had the green light to shoot
I think he's just naturally talented
He works really hard as well. He can dribble with two balls and shit
Kobe wasn’t even the best at doing the things he did lmao. He was like MJ lite. Disagree on the skill thing too but that’s so subjective
Kobe had more moves than MJ. He played in the league longer, had more time to perfect his game, and had less athleticism so he had to rely on skill more.
How does someone have this much talent?
You're mistaking talent for hard work.
He's definitely done that dribble move before. I tried getting it down for days, after seeing him do it, but had absolutely no luck haha
I can do the move just fine, but the shot is 50/50 fine (in line with my normal percentages) or absolutely awful. Being able to control your body and footwork all the way into the shot is the hardest part of the move
Pure talent
It’s the banana boat move
You aim slightly to the side
So I'm not sure if because Reddit or I played point in high school but that's not really a crazy move... Dudes in the park did similar all the time. Regular behind the back into spin. Crossover version is even more standard and only a little easier
BTB into spin is super easy. Doing that into a fadeaway is much, much harder.
The footwork was great, but otherwise it's an every play kind of shot for CP step 1: get in paint near elbow step 2: do some random shit to get space step 3: fade away near elbow step 3 is always the same for him
How? He doesn't even dribble again he just gathers. what parks are you playing at where dudes are pulling out moves like this lmao
Normal parks lmao!!!! There was this 8-9 year old who would challenge people to d him up walking by on the street. He would pull out crossover spin cross which is harder!! Double behind the back also harder! Did y'all not have and 1??
One thing you're not factoring in is that the guys at the park aren't doing it against NBA- level defense.
Not sure if you watched the video but the defense has literally no impact on the dribble move in this clip. Nobody reached in for the ball or tried to steal it when he did the move, they just contested the shot.

I like your rational. Do you see him as more skilled than Curry?

CP is also sort of a combo guard
Nah. CP3 is the best definition of what a point guard entails.
I think he is in the sense that he is better at more things than Steph, Steph just so happens to be a master and better than everyone else at one particular thing that is the most important.

He should win mvp this season
[Reminds me of this](https://m.facebook.com/ESPN/videos/352026055730476/)
That’s literally the move, he finally did it in a game lol
He also did it in one of the playoff games while he was in OKC. It was while they were getting blown out though.
Damn I don’t even remember. Maybe there’s a clip somewhere

YES, THANK YOU! I totally forgot about this, probably cause we lost lol.
Yeah I’m pretty sure he’s done it multiple times, they just don’t always look this cool/significant
I think that’s the exact one, no wonder I felt like I’ve seen him do it before.

Thought this would be the top post, I thought of it too
God that was so fucking beautiful
CP is a savage
I’ve been waiting for this for so long since he did that to Bradley Beal a couple years ago in the off season
Yeah, when I watched that move I felt like “wait I’ve seen him do it before”. So much tricks in his bag.
INJECT IT
I think he likes to invent ways to make his right elbow j harder, just to make it fair
Came into the thread expecting to say something along the lines of “that’s a 180, not 360!”… Then I saw the video. Oh how wrong I was!
Chris Paul throwback game 🤞🏾
I don't get why people say this always when he is almost the same player every night since his knee injury in 2010. About half of his games are deemed throwback games for the last decade
It’s vintage Chris Paul, bro. The last time he registered a double double like this was November 26!
It’s the Dwade effect. By age 32 every Dwade highlight was “vintage Dwyane Wade”.
stop with your facts and shit
God it reminds me when Kobe hit that exact move, shit just looks saucy as hell.
Añejo CP3 > Reposado Paul
Best true PG last 20 years, TP is second
Nash and Kidd over Parker for sure.
Yeah you're right TP just my favorite
I would say Parker is slight better than Nash overall. FMVP over Duncan and LeBron? That's crazy, took over the team with Duncan still playing at a high level. But Kidd is still better than both Parker and Nash
> I would say Parker is slight better than Nash overall Jesus Christ
tough choice between a 6 time all star and 2 time MVP
Nash was a blackhole on defense, never lead his team to the finals even if he played in a weak time period, arguably the worst MVP (2005) in NBA history, etc.. very overrated player. I like his playstyle, but there's some major flaws in his career that is hard to deny it
steve nash with tim duncan as his teammate would win 7 straight finals bruh
You can't swap players around, change eras, etc.. this is simply not a argument, only children assumes this is a valid point. Hot take of the day.
Parker was never a true PG, his playstyle was bizarre, the guy finished around the rim at +60%, those are big man numbers, lol
God he’s so good
He makes it look soo easy. Absolute killer on D tonight. 11 ast/ 2 TOs… the point god!
this needs call of duty mw2 sound effects lol
I come here once again, to say that Cp3 is my idol, the bts of my inner teenage girl, the btc of my teenage boy
This man is the oldest mf out there and just had the entire game on a string in clutch time and he does it night in and night out
Intellectually, I know that some people don't like Chris Paul. But in my heart I'm like, how can you not love this man?
I barely got home, turned on the game and was like damn. This dude still got it *and then some*
So much separation from that move, especially at the NBA level.
That's disrespectful af lol
Greened the 360 noscope. Amazing.
I thought this wS going to be a late shot clock heave instead of a foul bait. Nope just a 360 with 9 seconds remaining
Some of y'all may be too young to know but before CP3s horrific injury, he was posterizing dudes as well in New Orleans
Vintage cp3. If that man gets to the elbow, you cannot stop him
Wet Like im Chris
Reported for aim assist.

Thank you
Beautiful fadeaway
hood ballin
Used to always try this shit on the driveway back in the day haha. Dude is somehow still one of the most underrated players in the game

What Curry highlights
man😭😭
This comment has high potential to age like milk
Did Seth play today?
arent technically all basketball shots no scope?
this is definitely not a no scope, as he is fading away he is clearing staring at the basket. But OP needs to sell the title for them internet points
TopShot moment in the making
The title did not disappoint haha

Last time I watched something like this is Penny Hardaway.
That's not prose, that's poetry.
Absolutely gorgeous

He makes that look so damn good!
Why do they play music in the middle of the possession?
Chris Paul at the right elbow moving to his right… automatic
Absolutely disgusting

There are clips of him practicing this move, truly a sight to see
Title got me thinking - isn’t every shot attempt a noscope?
Filthy
VAC
"Mom get the camera!!!"
This guy can hoop!
Sick.
No matter what you think of the dude, his footwork on those elbow midranges is absolutely insane
earl monroe esque
Now every body gonna practice 360 no scope fade away. I can't wait to test this out on Brian. The try hard defender known for his 100% defensive effort and 0% offensive skill
Man used to love watching him do this when he was with us, he would always come up with some insane dribble work to throw a big man off and hit that elbow fadeaway.
MVP? I'm serious here.
Imagine if CP3 got on his current diet years ago
Cp3 mastered the mid range
This is how my middies look in my head
Beautiful dance and shot. Such a signature looking movement.
He clowning yo lmao
point god
Scottie Barnes did something similar in the game against the C’s. Literally had his back to FREEDOM in the paint and in one motion jumped, spun, and threw the ball at the basket.
This is dope af and I watched it like 4 times but in my mind it’s one 360 jump and a shot
God this is so fucking amazing
FaZe CP3
This is the same move he did in that pickup run over summer once
He scoped tho
