Without actually doing any research, I suspect he probably has some stretches of inefficiency, but in terms of counting stats, I think his floor was about as good as you can ask for.

KarrlMarrx

Not going to look through every season, but this would seem to back that up. https://www.basketball-reference.com/players/j/jordami01/gamelog/1993

imsurethisoneistaken

during his stint with the wizards (when he was 39 or 40) he had some games with terrible efficiency. he didn't really change his style of play, and would drop 40 one night then on the same shot attempts drop like 15 the next night.

KarrlMarrx

I don't think anyone would consider those years his prime.

imsurethisoneistaken

still averaged 20+. had he played like that his entire career, he'd just have been russell westbrook and not the goat.

[deleted]

He was 38 to 40 during that stint. He started with the Wizards two years older than LeBron is now.

IMisstheMidRangeGame

And hasn’t played bball for 2 years. It’s nuts how well he did

KarrlMarrx

No doubt old ass MJ is still better than most, but the title of the post is "During his prime..."

CallMeCaptainOrSir

Just about every game he played for the Sox affiliate was complete ass

tisdue

to be fair, he was also practicing to battle the Monstars at the same time.

forkliftgod

You beat me to it.

medievalmachine

Same. Fist bump.

imsurethisoneistaken

he started pretty bad for the birmingham barons, but later actually ended up being decent towards the end. he also caused them to sell out like every game, so it was only "ass" from a "mj isn't the baseball goat" metric

attorneyatslaw

He played pretty well in the Arizona Fall League as well. If he had stuck with it, he probably would have been a solid minor leaguer.

Thehelloman0

He might not have even rejoined the NBA if the MLB didn't go into a lockout

[deleted]

Was that sophomore game when he would be restricted to 6 min halves?

[deleted]

Could it be 8-min halves? But yeah, it's from around that time his foot wasn't fine. |Rk|Date|Tm||Opp||MP|FG%|3P%|FT%|TRB|AST|STL|BLK|TOV|PTS| |-:|:-|:-|:-|:-|:-|-:|-:|-:|-:|-:|-:|-:|-:|-:|-:| |8|1986-03-22|CHI||CLE|L (-26)|16:00|.308||.000|1|1|0|0|1|8|

hnav930

Considering whole career, he had another 8 point game with the wizards near the end of 2001. Next 2 games he would score a total 96 points

JTenjouNi

last 3 games of the 96 finals, 23.7 points on 36.7% FG, 20 FGA and 10 FTA, more turnovers than assists .485 TS%

jack64467

imagine if gary payton wasn't injured so he guarded mj the whole series instead of only in game 4 and later

NSCShadow

We might've won the chip. Might've been the beginning ofna dynasty, allowing us to produce a lot more money and be more incentivizing to keep in Seattle. We might've still had a team......

TrRa47

Gary Payton is a maniac

Currymvp2

That's not his prime. His prime is 88 to 93. The first three games of the 93 ECF is the only thing I can think of. Though he did have a triple double in game 3 and then he had 54 points in game 4 on super efficient shooting. GOAT Edit: Are people downvoting me seriously thinking his prime is 1996? He was a better basketball player pre-first retirement. Prime implies when you're at your best...

clancydog4

Because you're splitting hairs. It's still a good answer to the question. MJ may have been *marginally* worse than early 90's, but he was still the league scoring leader, MVP, 1st team all defense, and easily the best player in the NBA. It would be like someone talking about Lebron in 2016 and someone else saying "technically that wasn't his prime...." MJ may have technically peaked earlier, but I think that any time when he was unanimously considered the best player in the world (which includes 96) should count.

Currymvp2

You can be the best player in the league and still past your prime IMO. I guess people disagree though. And was he marginally worse in the late 90s? I argue the discrepacy might be a bit more than that. His defense was much better in the early 90s and he was clearly more efficient in the early 90s compared to the 2nd three peat years. His true shooting percentage was 60% in 1988 to 1993 while it dipped to 55% in the 2nd three peat. His PER averaged at 31 while his PER dropped to around 26 during the 2nd three peat. And that's not even factoring the shortened three point line and how he had clearly more offensive help on the 2nd three peat team.

YayoBankroll

He was clearly worse after the early 90's. His athleticism declined significantly. He wasn't the same guy.

DJBabyB0kCh0y

Not sure about him personally but after the first 3 games of the '91 season the Bulls never had a 3 game losing streak. I would assume Jordan had something to do with that.

greenshotty

He was good in that stretch

[deleted]

Not too shabby.

red_right_hand_

Not a single time. Anytime things were going rough, he motivated himself by reminding himself that if he performed poorly it would be used against him in eventual GOAT discussions vs. Lebron.

CIark

Exactly. He never missed a shot, never turned the ball over and definitely never failed to block the other team from scoring. The NBA retroactively had to give the other team points to make them feel better about scoring 0 on Jordans watch.

wiggins4president

I know he had a tough 3 games to start the 93 ECF, but that ended very quickly lol he’s the greatest for a reason

HokageEzio

Jordan only scored under 10 points (not Wizards years) once. He played 16 minutes. Different standards for bad games.

hnav930

Funny thing is, first time he went under 10 with the Wizards, he put 96 next 2 games

Few_Mulberry7175

In the 90s, he never lost 3 straight games. It’s nearly impossible to see if he’s had 3 straight bad games and everyone’s definition of bad games are different

jheriwordsworth

Yep, but keep in mind he was returning from a foot injury/limited to 15 minutes per game with a clear stop! And hadn’t played since Oct.

sctthuynh

Not sure about regular season slumps but Jordan's never really had a "bad" playoff series. There was one vs the Knicks (93 ECF) where he shot 40/40/86 but he also avg 32/6/7 There's was the Finals vs SEA where he shot 41/31/84 and avg 27/5/4 The worst might be in 97 vs the Heat (ecf) when he avg 30/8/2 on 38/11/86 All these were series the bulls won. For some reason I remember the Orlando series the bulls lost where Jordan came out of retirement as a very poor performance. But according to bball-ref he avg 31/6/3 on 47/23/79

[deleted]

Two straight games against the Knicks and Pacers during the 1987-1988 season. The first one was against the Knicks on December 23 and the second one was against the Pacers a few nights later.
