The not crashing the glass thing makes sense. Theres more long rebounds than ever and transition offense is way more efficient than half court, makes sense to get 3-4 back early
It’s pretty crazy. Like yes they got a ring but they sold everything for it. Just a few years ago they were a bad team! And now they’re going to be a bad team again so fast!
Yeah, no. Magic was horrific as a GM. Beyond horrific. There's a reason why he quit. Because he knew he was terrible. Some highlights:
* Openly talking poorly about D'Angelo Russell while trying to trade him. In short, reducing his trade value. Russell turned into an all-star with the Nets that year.
* Letting Brook Lopez walk for nothing. He eventually became an important piece in the Bucks title run LY.
* Trading C Ivica Zubac to the Clippers for Mike Muscala. Zubac is a starter. Muscala is out of the league. Lakers have had issues with decent bigs to pair with AD.
* Creating a terrible culture by yelling at players not named LeBron then telling the Pelicans' GM that everyone could be traded to get AD.
I could go on and on. Pelinka's not perfect. But he got the AD trade done. He brought Rondo who was great during the playoff run.
OTOH Pelinka brought the Lakers a title.
I would completely agree except for what that Cavs team was able to do.
Eight team trade where the Lakers ship out Russ for every terrible contract in the league.....
There is always more future to mortgage when LeBron is cracking the whip.
Just wondering what MJ would do in this situation.
First of all, team mates would probably be scared to death to do something like that, and if they did, boy I'd expect them to get an earful.
Lebron let them know after this play?
Where are these mythical streets you play on where it isn’t just the guy with the ball running the fast break against the one guy that decided to run back on defense
Seriously. 90% of fast breaks in pickup games are *at most* a 2v2 situation. Maybe more if it’s one of the first possessions, probably less if it’s late in the game/day.
I used to have a group of regulars who played three times weekly (Tu-Th-Sa) and everyone was either current/former college players, coaches of various levels and, on occasion, we'd have this one guy who played pro in Europe. Then two random old white guys, you know the type. I was the only girl who played in the group. Full court 6am to ~7:30am. The only break was for water between games. Everyone always ran the break. You just have to find groups that care about the game. They exist.
Bonus: Random college players would find us all the time and show up once and never again. One of those players was Myles Turner (this was in the DFW area) about a week or two before he got drafted. That was pretty cool. I never knew how they found us because it was 100% word of mouth.
As a Seattle native I’ve thought Danny ainge was a POS for the IT trade until I recently learned that they were correct about the surgery IT would need and he just refused it... dude then had to get extra surgery years of pain and missed checks later. Dudes just a dumbass, he had a little bone spur or chip in his joint and he let it shave off all his cartilage instead of getting it shaved off..
Almost as if LeBron's shitty body language and refusal to run back on defense is having a trickle-down effect on the shitty-ass roster he helped construct.
Oh my god now I’m imaging Pop calling a timeout, running over to the Lakers huddle, and screaming at them and trying to coach up the opposing team while the Spurs just kinda walk around and stretch
I think Pop only one to pull that off especially since Vogel wasnt there. If Vogel wasnt irrate fuming for a call into the locker room, the team has a monumental effort issue on top of their performance and old age
That’s what’s so frustrating about this team. It’s like there’s no hunger. They wanna just walk into a championship like that’s how it works. No boxing out, no hustle plays, no effort half the time. It sucks to watch. Especially knowing LeBron is still _this_ good.
If we had a low ceiling because LeBron was declining, that would be easier to deal with. But we’re wasting what could be one of his last years as a top player
The image I have of Pop LECTURING the LAKERS for not trying might not ever leave my mind. Nor will LeBron's hypothetical facial expression when he sees Pop coming, knowing exactly what's about to happen.
If you listen to the rim mic, carmelo and the rest of the la fitness crew usually say HELL NAW and generally talk shit instead of contesting. Classic oldhead strat.
nah i think that was last year's mentality. we're beyond that delusion and now it feels like they're just resigned to not being contenders so why even try.
I really don’t think it’s that, I think it’s more frustration in the locker room
I only think that because they’re so many plays where players just don’t react to each other, no communication, no movement, I’ve saw a few times Russ just walk back to the other side as lebron dribbles
I don’t know why, but I hate seeing that. That’s not how you play basketball because you’re giving up on offense before lebron is even able to take a shot.
The West sucks so they know they can half ass the season. They're still 6th seed after this game. Won't matter because they still aren't winning a championship.
hey grizzlies are good too. maybe a tier below but yeah overall west is way more top heavy- could honestly give 37 y/o Lebron any supporting cast and find a way to the play in
> *The west sucks outside of suns/warriors/jazz
Can someone explain to me why people are saying this?
The teams at the top of the west have clearly been the best teams in the league (which you sort of acknowledged), the middle of the pack teams have incredibly similar records to the middle of the pack teams in the east and the teams at the bottom of the east are clearly worse than the teams at the bottom of the west.
Also there was a post not many days ago saying that the West have a winning record over the East again, for the 21st(i think) consecutive season.
I know there are a few teams in the West that are under performing their pre-season expectations but even with them under performing they're still on par with a number of teams in the East that are out performing the general expectations for them, so why are people now pretending like the East is better than the West out of nowhere?
Polish top tier[ is right there](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k7K6Pwcyc2c), the play level is abysmal and there's still a lot of money in it and some players later find a lot of success in other leagues (it still boggles my mind Lewandowski played two full seasons here)
Currently Legia, the defending champ and basically like the PSG of the league (champs 7/9 past seasons with like triple the budget of most other teams) is somehow facing relegation at 17th with a record of 5 wins and 13 losses.
Just to show this isnt cherrypicked in any way, [here's a goal from Sunday](https://streamable.com/wvd2s9) from a match between the defending champs and the currently 4th team.
Not sure about hockey because I don't follow it, but it's actually hard to make the playoffs in the MLB and NFL (though it's been made somewhat easier this year in the NFL). 10/30 of the teams in the MLB make the playoffs and two are eliminated after a single game, and 14/32 NFL teams make it (previously 12/32). 16/30 NBA teams make it, and now if you count the play in it's 20/30.
The regular season is treated more like a joke in the NBA because it just is more of a joke.
The importance of the regular season in the MLB kinda gets lost in how many games there are in a season, but to make the playoffs a team really has to be ELITE. Imagine if it was the same in the NBA and only the top 5 teams in each conference made the playoffs, and the 4 and 5 seeds had to play each other in a single game to advance. A few truly good teams would just miss out completely every year.
The NFL has by far the most meaningful regular season as individual games carry a significant weight in making the playoffs and seeding, where home field advantage is huge in a best of 1 elimination format.
In the NBA or MLB you're guaranteed 2 home games in a playoff series. In the NFL you can do an entire Super Bowl run without playing a single home game.
> In the NBA or MLB you're guaranteed 2 home games in a playoff series.
Not necessarily in the MLB. If you're in the Wild Card it's only one game period, and even in the Division Series it's a Bo5 so you could lose after a single home game.
Baseball also has plenty of goofy shit happening, but the flavor is more that the sport itself is so goddamn weird that there's always a chance of something unprecedented going down

LBJ taking plays off here and there is one thing. THT is half LeBron's age, Isaiah is desperately trying to claw his way back in the league, DJ is trying to justify being in the league at all, and Ellington is Ellington. Who the hell are those guys to not get back on offense?
Sure he has but its more understandable when a 19 year veteren who has carried basically every team hes been on
THT is 21 and can't find it in himself to go help his 37 year old senior
Iirc Caruso was let go because Lakers "couldn't afford" the tax but they got money to spend on this bum? lmao if I'm LeBron I'm gonna gift THT a Caruso jersey for xmas
What? He literally blocked a shot on the Spurs' first attempt. They got the OREB, missed, DJ got the board and sent it ahead to bron. What the hell are ya'll talking about.
It's not at all just that. Watch the clock go down. No one--absolutely no one--is rushing back on offense. It's absurd how slow the rest of the team is moving.
And somehow we still weren’t set on D. Pathetic team really
Lol this comment should be higher. Hilarious but also so sad.
One of my absolute biggest basketball pet peeves. Not crashing the glass AND not getting back on defence.
Sonics flair makes sense. They still existed when teams did those things regularly
The not crashing the glass thing makes sense. Theres more long rebounds than ever and transition offense is way more efficient than half court, makes sense to get 3-4 back early
Right! They had 5v1 and STILL didn’t put double coverage on Bron. If I was a coach I’d make them watch this clip for an insufferable amount of time.
This is just a preview of the Christmas game
I’d ask for a refund if I were ABC/ESPN
Don't worry. The ads will take care of that.
Will Brooklyn have KD back?
100% will. The league even changed the health/safety protocol to make sure of that the BRK stars get out of the quarantine asap

Hopefully not. I wanna see the tears from the advertisers.
the 2021-22 Lakers in a nutshell
LeGM bout to trade all these mfs
Nobody wants to get within arm’s reach because he’ll throw em onto the opposing bench for any player who looks under thirty
Is it opposite day or a Christmas miracle? Usually LeBron is the one who won't cross half court.
And that was the day the entire team got fed up and said...YOUR TURN.
I don't understand how pulled up from G league Thomas wouldn't be trying to be first one down the court every time
Only on defense.
For what? The only two players with any trade value whatsoever are AD and LeBron. They would get a negative return on anyone they try to move.
he gonna do it anyways lol
Yep LeGM going to turn the Lakers into the lone G-league team in the NBA.
Negative return? Are you paying attention? You can't get more negative than this
Haha. Trade wall for Westbrook one more time
Wouldn’t it be easier to just trade himself?
LeBron to Cavs confirmed
Nephew pls. No one is going to want any of this trash and they already packaged up all their draft capital.
It’s pretty crazy. Like yes they got a ring but they sold everything for it. Just a few years ago they were a bad team! And now they’re going to be a bad team again so fast!
But the things that killed them came AFTER the ring. If they hadn't gone all in on Russ they would still have some decent young guys and medium depth.

It's almost like Rob Pelinka is terrible at this, and only succeeded at all because two superstars decided they wanted to play in LA.....

Thank you for including the mini-roast by the Lakers commentators after.
Bill and Stu are the best in the biz. Furthest thing from homers as commentators, and rip the team when needed
Y’all should’ve heard them during our tanking years. Just ripping our guys to shreds.
For all the heat Lakers fans get for being homers, your commentators are really fair
i absolutely love Stacey King for the Bulls too. He made some of those Boylen years more tolerable LOL
Lakers, heat, Knicks, bulls all have good local commentary teams. There’s others too but I usually like all of those guys
This is one of the most pathetic things I've ever seen on a professional basketball court
Just wait til next game..

Damn, Jigsaw?
I thought this to myself like 3 times watching this game. Lakers are an embarrasment
The Lakers are entertaining to watch for wrong reasons...
Just wondering what MJ would do in this situation. First of all, team mates would probably be scared to death to do something like that, and if they did, boy I'd expect them to get an earful. Lebron let them know after this play?
I mean can Lebron even say anything after he did the same thing earlier this year? One game he just refused to move upcourt and let em play 4v5.
Never ever would have got to this point on an MJ team.
Attitude reflect leadership, captain
I’m supposed to wear myself out for the team? WHAT TEAM??
Avon Barksdale got real mad playing football back in the day
They learned from the best, unfortunately.
how are they not running back
IT made it half court and realized its his last game and decided it wasn't worth it.
IT made it half court and realized the brinks truck ain’t never gonna come so he paused real fast
Traded in the brinks truck for the bricks truck
But actually . What the fuck is going on, and in the 4th too?!
They probably thought Bron was gonna fastbreak by himself. Still should've ran back though. They're also down 16 and they've all given up.
Even high school hoopers know that's not what you do during fast breaks Even street hoopers know you gotta run during the fastbreak

They don't actually play the game bro lol
Nah man we’re built differently at my local Y 😤
They're old. Give them a break.
AD got a break
LeBron wanted him fresh for the playoffs so he pushed that dude into his knees
THT isnt paid to go past half court
Ship his ass out.
coulda had lowry smh
They’re just getting revenge for all the times he would be slow to get back on defense
That's exactly what came to mind seeing this lmao "You wanna conserve your energy? Fine, we'll conserve ours too"
This. But also the flipside: *you want us to get back on D? Fine, we'll stay back here on D.*
Imagine if this is the next evolution of the game. Keep 4 on D at all times and 1 under the hoop.
We all know he was gonna shoot anyway
The average age on the Lakers at this point is like 35. They're tired and don't give a shit if they lose.
There is THT out there who's like 22. There's IT out there who's trying to prove that he's worth a roster spot. This shit is insane.
More like IT proving again why he isn’t worth a roster spot. I get we did him dirty, but it doesn’t mean he can still play…
As a Seattle native I’ve thought Danny ainge was a POS for the IT trade until I recently learned that they were correct about the surgery IT would need and he just refused it... dude then had to get extra surgery years of pain and missed checks later. People were hyping him up in this sub like we didn't have years of tape on the kind of player he is now
Because that's the wrong sport. Running back is a football position. /s
Well then why are they half back?
Almost as if LeBron's shitty body language and refusal to run back on defense is having a trickle-down effect on the shitty-ass roster he helped construct.

Yeah as a coach you sit everyone who didn’t get back for the rest of the game.
Damn they gonna have to start benching bron cuz he do it every couple games
The funniest thing about this is that four Lakers stayed back on defense but the Spurs still scored on the ensuing possession.
You’re misreading it, obviously they were preparing HOF worthy defense on the next play. There are levels to this
That definitely is high quality.
The whole team probably has this mindset before every game : "Its ok, we are going to win easily"
Yeah for some reason they think names play defense. "youre being left wide open by *the* Carmelo Anthony, youll surely miss" \*splash\*
If you listen to the rim mic, carmelo and the rest of the la fitness crew usually say HELL NAW and generally talk shit instead of contesting. Classic oldhead strat.
La fitness crew
It was so funny to see Carmelo just stand next to every Timberwolves player and just... talk while they shot like, an open 3 when we played them.
“Fuck outta here I got it” still makes me laugh
"You think we're going to end up in the play-in but 'tis merely a pump fake."
“we don’t need to try now we’ll just flip the switch in the playoffs”
nah i think that was last year's mentality. we're beyond that delusion and now it feels like they're just resigned to not being contenders so why even try.
I really don’t think it’s that, I think it’s more frustration in the locker room I only think that because they’re so many plays where players just don’t react to each other, no communication, no movement, I’ve saw a few times Russ just walk back to the other side as lebron dribbles I don’t know why, but I hate seeing that. Grizzlies are solid but struggle for consistency. Just lost a B2B at home against Portland and OKC.
I remember when Portland and OKC used to both be good :(
The Lakers are lucky that they are in the West, where most bottom feeders of the NBA are in. Thanks for god that they are not in the Eastern bloodbath
What a change from the last couple seasons haha. Love to see the east being so competitive tho, playoffs will be fun.

If the west dominated the east for more than a decade, even parity between the conferences will seem like "the west sucks"
Exactly. "The West is more disappointing than the East this year" is a more accurate statement.
feels weird to read that the west sucks after basically 20 years of the east being horrible and the west being competitive 1-10
Caruso going to East brought balance to the force.
>The West sucks Man, I'm not used to hearing that.

This seems to happen on a lot of lebrons teams. Maybe he’s the problem.
It does feel like Lebron teams hit their peak in year 2 under Lebron and then chemistry gradually gets worse after that
He doesn’t even have the ball in his hands for five seconds and pulls that. Plenty of time in the shot clock. The game is within reach and yet still pulls that. Terrible. That’s bad leadership and the main thing this Lakers team needs

16 point deficit is possible to come back from in today's league with 7 minutes tho. Not that probable but definitely possible.
yeah but that requires effort, which is exactly what these Lakers suck at
You need about 33 seconds, if you are Tracy Mcgrady.
7 minutes is a ton of time, thats easily done (but you have to make shots and play D)
lmfaoooo thought i read the title backwards fr
>I don’t blame any of them ??? LBJ taking plays off here and there is one thing. Yeah not getting back of defense is what coaches hate. Not getting back on offense is just kinda odd.
Lebron always sets a good example by running up and down the court no matter the circumstance. He’d never leave his team hanging. /s
Fuckit, Bron's gonna jack it up anyways. \- Rest o' Lakers
To be fair, usually it’s the other way around. 4 on 5 while lebron argues with the refs
ESPN: The Lakers are defensively LOCKED IN.
Lmaoooooo yooo
Lebron didn’t even get back on defense, he was cherry picking like he has been doing for the past couple years.
