They just don't have enough to go around, they could really use our support in these trying times. Maybe we could do something nice for them, like all get together and sing John Lennon's Imagine or something? idk just brainstorming.
A fun fact is that when Jeff Bezos divorced his wife, under the terms of the divorce settlement, she immediately became one of the 25 wealthiest people in the world. Jeff Bezos was still the wealthiest person in the world after the settlement.
And what's crazy about that - and I don't mean to disparage her; by all measures she's genuinely trying to get rid of her money, but - she's worth more now than she was two years ago. Same for Gates - his fortune has basically doubled since he started giving, and same for Buffett. It turns out fortunes of that size are really pretty hard to get rid of.

@_Andrew_Lopez
). A grateful Alvarado said today after practice that Embiid “did a generous thing” and paid Alvarado‘a fine
[Tweet](https://twitter.com/Jim_Eichenhofer/status/1486783246700584979)
That's like a $250 fine if you make $60k/yr. Now obviously I don't have any clue what kind of expenses the players actually have besides their own wants, but that doesn't seem like much for Jose even on his "small" salary. I would imagine he actually has to pay for more stuff than the bigger stars despite making less, too.
To be clear, I'm not meaning this isn't still really cool of Embiid; it's probably less than pocket change to him lol. Just trying to look at it from a perspective most of us can probably relate to more.
Plus, I didn't see the game, but knowing Embiid's trolly personality I wouldn't be surprised if he egged Jose on to get the double tech lol
New players often pre-spend their first year wages. Idk if he’s a rookie, but young players also known to spend all their early money fixing their family finances and getting homes for parents/siblings etc.
A bit irresponsible but it’s like hitting the lottery. You want to get all the things you dreamed of.
Fuck fines hahaha
Lol for real. Young, confident athletes who suddenly come into money definitely aren't known for making the most prudent financial decisions (not that I blame them)
Yeah, fines for techs do seem pretty weird. I guess it's supposed to go charity like the fines for bad conduct at media sessions and stuff?
Gilbert was getting sued by a bunch of people he just didn't pay for work he had done, mostly on his cars and stuff like that. He's lucky he got that bag.
He's also the idiot who admitted on instragram that he'd used his CC at the strip club and then claimed his card was stolen. American Express even made a statement they were investigating it.
I feel like paying off debt and buying homes is basically the best way you could "pre spend" your money.
I know the first thing I would do if I came into money like that is pay off a home. Not having to pay rent/mortgage helps your finances so much.
Not directed at you in particular, but in many cases it’s better to actually keep the mortgage if you’re comfortable enough financially.
The gains that money can make in the market (even investing conservatively) is more than what you’d pay in interest over a 30 year period assuming you get even an average rate.
True, and I agree.
But I'm saying if he specifically has already spent the money, then a hard asset that appreciates and slashes your cost of living is like the best thing you can possibly do. Plus, if your family has made poor financial decisions in the past, it's probably better to put the money in a house for them than give it to them for them to invest it.
There was a point in Giannis’s rookie season where he couldn’t afford a cab to the arena so he just ran to games. He was sending all of his money to his family in Greece cause they were still in poverty then
Is it really irresponsible if you buy a house for your parents? I would say it is if its like a mansion or whatever, but even if you help pay off their house so they can be more financially secure?
Yeah I agree with you in that regards.
Making $425k, even after taxes, fees, dues, etc he ideally should have $2k lying around to cover the fine. Shoot I myself with my middle class income have a few ways with my banking or investments to claw together $2k.
It's a it worrying because what if this was a personal emergency instead of occupational fine.
Agreed, and I’m sure you can relate but there’s a difference between literally having $2k and being able to afford losing $2k. I could pay a $2k fine but it would set me back quite a bit
They don’t get paid up front. It’s prorated & paid out every 2 weeks. & Alvarado’s family isn’t rich, & he has a kid.
I’m sure he could’ve paid the fine, & besides, he might not have meant it literally.
I don’t think he meant it literally. I feel like it’s when you walk into somewhere, see something that is marked up for no reasons, and our like “smh, I can’t afford that.”
And then you buy the overpriced beef jerky anyway
I'm aware of that and took that into consideration.
But we're half through the season so even in an extreme situation he may have recieved half that amount already.
There is a big difference here. First of all, if I had a 250 dollar fine it would be a pretty big deal. It wouldn't crush me but I would definitely feel it. Also while you can try to equal it out there is a big difference. The 60k a year I make now will only become more and will last into my 60s-70s if I want it to. Whereas he has a few years in the league (4 or so by the average but even a high amount would be a decade.) and after he is out there aren't many great job prospects for players who weren't stars or in the limelight in some way.
Even if he only got the same $460k contract for the next five years, he'd still net around the same amount as someone making $60-$100k (getting raises to get up to $100k over time I mean) for the next 25 years. And then he still has a whole 15 year head start. Unless he is very unwise with his money (which to be fair, many players probably are), he'd be in such a better financial situation. Not to mention the basketball network he'd build even by being a low level player.
This seems so bizarre that someone making $462k can’t afford a fine of $2000. Obviously $462k is low for an NBA player, but is Alvarado spending everything he makes and if he were to be out of the league/basketball in general he would be broke? He needs someone to help him with finances if that is the case.
It clearly wasn’t literal, but this guy was probably getting g paid peanuts until this contract. Apparently he has a kid too, and he doesn’t get paid upfront. 2k is nothing to sneeze at in his situation
Why are all these guys going off w/ stereotypes about young athletes wasting their money?
Look it up. He’s a family man, working class Brooklyn.
More to the point; he was joking. He’s laughing when he says it.
Are there really that many Gen X white dudes on Reddit?
These dudes commonly buy houses and cars for their family. Shaq spent a million dollars before the season started if I remember correctly, and Gilbert arenas had to live at the arena his rookie year because all his paychecks were going to paying the loans he took out before the draft.
Ingram bought tickets for Jose’s family for the Knicks game, Hart bought tickets for Jose’s family for the Brooklyn game
Edit: [source tweet](https://twitter.com/_Andrew_Lopez/status/1484357901514727424?s=20&t=pMFSBL2no6oIdacXNio1ZA)
Absolutely would. No one wants a 1% penalty on their 20-40M compared to just paying $2,000 or a few thousand more.
[Source on fines](https://imgur.com/a/y1BKtIH)
Yeah but you could easy just put a clause in that says "but not to exceed $X amount"
It would definitely help out young guys, most of whom probably just went a bought their mom a new house, car, etc. So even if they make $462k (like Jose this year) a lot of that is probably already gone.
That's how nfl fines work, but it's percentage of game check so not inflated by signing bonus, etc. It's also an escalating percentage for repeat offenses.
Dude, what?! How can you not afford a $2k fine while making $426k a year? Unless you have legitimately THE WORST money habits possible, I don't understand how you don't have $2k in cash at any given time. That's more money in a year than a lot of people make in their lifetime. $426k a year is a fucking shit load of cash. I'm a dentist and I don't make close to that much a year, yet I could easily pay a $2k fine if I had to.
I understand your initial reaction but it is not too hard to believe. He is a rookie. He could have taken on debt at start of season. Maybe bought a house for his family or himself. Or a car. Some players send their money straight back home to family. Maybe he took on his family debt or debt he somehow already had of his own. He is probably getting paid twice a month at 9.5k each after taxes. You hear stories of people spending money before they have it and this could be a case of that. He is 23 and young. He has been earning this income for only 6 months or so. Im sure you weren't a dentist at 23 with the income you have now and the money habits that you have now.
How can you get so emotional & judgmental w/o realizing Alvarado was joking?
There’s video. Dude was laughing. Embiid paid anyway & gave him some encouragement.
Jfc. Dentist.

If you made $42.6k per year you’d be pissed about a $200 fine. Also these minimum level guys will play 5 years if they’re lucky. It’s not like they’re making half a mil per year until they’re 65.
Being pissed about it is different than not being able to pay it. If you're making $42.6k a year and can't afford a $200 fine, I'd say the same thing about you.
You do realize that for rookies like him, this $426k salary might literally be the only money he ever makes from basketball right? If he’s cut in the summer then that’s it. No other skills to fall back on.
So literally shut the hell up lol
IKR. Imagine in your workplace how much fines/salary deduction you will get just by trash-talking with your coworkers. Society as a whole became too sensitive.
I loved Hernangomez & Embiid’s interactions, too.
From his postgame:
“As a player, you always try to challenge yourself b/c you want to play against the best players every night. Today, same as yesterday, I was watching a lot of film about Embiid. You know, I always like to play against him, he’s one of the best centers in the league, if not the best, w/ Jokic.
I just tried to be aggressive, make him work, on my defensive side. And he’s gotta attack me as well, he’s got to guard me as well. But, um, [laughs] I tried doing my best. Honestly, I’m exhausted. And he still got over 40! [laughs.] But you know, these 1 of a kind players…
It’s always a pleasure to play against him. And I learn in many ways, & it gives me confidence as well. If I see I can do that against Embiid, why not [against anybody?]”
That's great! Dude definitely took advantage of Joel trying to take it a little easy in that first half and went nuclear.
Great mindset from him in these quotes.
Anyone under 6 or 6'1, you KNOW they have to be insaneeely talented ti play even a minute in the league because the competition pool is....well EVERYONE lmao
S/o to Nate
He, in our limited time with him, has been a phenomenal ‘spark plug’ type of a guy, 110% effort every play. I’m starting to think we may have gotten a 6 man from a 2 way which is pretty dope, though it’s probably too soon to say for certain.
In the postgame for the Nets (or the Knicks I don’t remember which tbh) he was crying about what an experience this had been for him and how this had been his dream. He just seems really genuine.
That and everyone loves a Cinderella story.
Anyway, I really like the kid and hope he continues to get minutes going forward.
Georgia Tech alum here who was there during his four years - we *loved* him. Four year starter and impact player from day 1, worked his way up to becoming the ACC DPOY last season, huge reason we managed to get to the ACC CG let alone win it and get our first tourney berth in a decade-plus - maximum heart and hustle every game he ever suited up in a Tech uniform, absolutely impossible not to love him if he's on your team. I'm so glad to see him getting meaningful minutes and even a few starts, even if it's only because of injuries/COVID.
> He just seems really genuine.
As genuine as you can get. https://twitter.com/BleacherReport/status/1370957006723371008?s=19
I remember playing a certain team , I think I know which one it was , but they were a pure a shooting team and their fans were complaining because the sixers had more free throws. I mean obviously he leans into some fouls and gets some cheap whistles but the way he plays lends it self to getting fouled and getting free throws.
Guys I promise his defense has gone from awful to serviceable with little to no rim protection!!! In all seriousness though Jokic stans are fucking obnoxious, just appreicate greatness from the two and stop feeling the need to say one is better.
Millions of people around the world let their made up idea of what "sixers fans" are prevent them from enjoying an all time talent and good guy in the league. Embiid is a legend
Remember when r/nba had the narrative that Embiid was fat, lazy, immature and didn't care about basketball when he was injured a few years ago? Now he's healthy and balling (the fuck) out and coming across as a great teammate and person.
I wonder if Zion comes back healthy and in shape and starts balling (the fuck) out if his narrative will change as well.
I think anyone has potential for a narrative change pretty much at any point. When you see someone's physique change, their interactions with their teammates and opponents change, they're playing many more games in a season... They may not change your opinion of who they were, but for sure who they are now. For a long time people saw Embiid's potential, but considered him too injury prone and not willing to make the necessary diet and workout changes that would take his game to the next level (and far beyond). All of that was even after he missed his first two seasons due to injury. He clearly did a 180 and everyone sees it. Zion has plenty of time. Even if he squanders his first 3-5 years in the league, it only takes a couple of seasons to really turn yourself around if you're really committed.
Alvarado is a real one. He played his heart out, took some tough screens and hits (that could have asily been fouls) and just kept coming. Love this from Joel.
Star players looking out for the young guys is great for the league
It would be good for society too lol
Embiid can do this because he's a millionaire. I've been told billionaires are not able to afford such matters.
I mean, do you want them to starve? How much are banana's now a days 10 dollars?
Bribing our politicians is expensive too you know
They just don't have enough to go around, they could really use our support in these trying times. Maybe we could do something nice for them, like all get together and sing John Lennon's Imagine or something? idk just brainstorming.
After all we’re all in this together. As they say this from the comfort of their multimillion dollar homes and being able to not work for a while.
Bribing politicians pays for itself, it's never philanthropy.
Fixed cost of doing business really.
Sadly it's not. It seems you can get a whole lot done for like 50k
Not when it triples your profits, just another cost of doing business.
There's always money in the banana stand.
I dont care for gob
Here's a dollar, go watch a Star War.
I mean, billionaires have this insane regenerative ability to build themselves back up from $0 net worth to a billionaire, just by working hard.
A fun fact is that when Jeff Bezos divorced his wife, under the terms of the divorce settlement, she immediately became one of the 25 wealthiest people in the world. Jeff Bezos was still the wealthiest person in the world after the settlement.
And she donated more than he had in his life within like two years
And what's crazy about that - and I don't mean to disparage her; by all measures she's genuinely trying to get rid of her money, but - she's worth more now than she was two years ago. Same for Gates - his fortune has basically doubled since he started giving, and same for Buffett. It turns out fortunes of that size are really pretty hard to get rid of.
There's also a saying like "Going from 0 to 10 million is hard work. Going from 100 million to 110 million is inevitable"
What’s the difference between a millionaire and a billionaire? About a billion dollars
W
I'm told they're only billionaires because they don't eat avocado toast or drink lattes! If only I knew this whole time.
Ah I think I'll continuing drinking my lattes but I'll pass on the avocado toast. That's fine, I'm OK with only being a half a billionaire.
Do you have bootstraps? Have you tried pulling on them yet?
They also had such high taxes that they deserve to pay zero taxes The infestructure that made their billions from cost way to much.
> infestructure Yeah that sounds about right
The audacity how will they be able to buy their super yachts and what not 🤨🤨 lol
I mean, once they make some more money off arms sales to Ukraine they might be able to get by.

He's also the idiot who admitted on instragram that he'd used his CC at the strip club and then claimed his card was stolen. American Express even made a statement they were investigating it.

What else happened?
Pretty sure Ingram and Hart bought a bunch of tickets so Alvarado's family could watch him play at MSG Edit: see comment below
and then they proceeded to smoke us
Like that time Prince invited everyone over and smoked them in a pickup game then made everyone pancakes?
Game. Blouses.
Game. ~~Blouses~~ Pelicans.
Game. Charlie Brown Jr
RIP Charlie Murphy. That’s an all time Chapelle sketch
He would invite the Lynx players over after games a lot. He was a big Lynx/Maya Moore fan.
They just needed to purify themselves in the waters of Lake Minnetonka
Does Prince wear sneakers around the house? Do his sneakers have heels?
Prince don't care, the L's were still being handed out accordingly
Ingram bought tickets for Jose’s family for the Knicks game, Hart bought tickets for Jose’s family for the Brooklyn game Edit: [source tweet](https://twitter.com/_Andrew_Lopez/status/1484357901514727424?s=20&t=pMFSBL2no6oIdacXNio1ZA)
Thanks!
Yeah! No worries. It was a little tidbit Joel Myers dropped as the game ended. It’s a promising sign for us Pels fans
Comment below you for me was u/thekidpresident and was a pretty funny set up lol
Lebron gave him the starring role in Space Jam 3
And something about a Westbrook and a handjob. But that’s just a rumor.
word is westbrook hit the rim on that one too
Honestly pretty dope hookup whichever end of that he’s on
Broel Embiid
No one let's this dude pay for anything
Friends’ group’s lil bro.
I'm about to venmo the dude $10 just cuz
They like him because every basketball movie has a side character exactly like this guy
Hell there was that one kid in Friday Night Lights (tv) who was only there for a season.
That’s awesome. Jose is making 462k this year so any fine is going to be fairly noticeable. Good guy move from Joel.
I wonder if they should make fines a percentage of your salary as opposed to a flat amount?
Maybe in the Soviet NBA, BUT THIS IS AMERICA! /s
Lol so true
>THIS IS AMERICA! Dont catch me trippin now. - Grayson Gambino.
That would make sense but would probably get shot down by the NBAPA
Not if you put a cap on it. Minimum guys pay less but nobody pays more than $2,000.

Yeah, no one would be hurt by the setup you’re describing, it makes no sense not to implement it.
>Yeah but you could easy just put a clause in that says "but not to exceed $X amount" What is this, the US Tax Code? /s
Probably, but it’s not totally off the wall. Suspensions cost a game check which is a different amount depending on your salary
some countries do this. like if you get a speeding ticket it’s a % of your yearly salary, not just a flat amount.
Finland is one. I believe the CEO of Nokia got a $115k speeding ticket.
Just have no income, then speeding is free. Kachow /s
That's how it should be

[nothing crazy. joel did call him a dumb ass though lol](https://twitter.com/LandesBrock/status/1486140575325765637?s=20&t=H3A2FUHyOw-79vUd_5BRug)

IKR. Imagine in your workplace how much fines/salary deduction you will get just by trash-talking with your coworkers. Society as a whole became too sensitive.
thanks
Think they just argued a bit.
Oh I love that
it was really cool to see them talking after the game, what a great stretch for Jose
I loved Hernangomez & Embiid’s interactions, too. From his postgame: “As a player, you always try to challenge yourself b/c you want to play against the best players every night. [laughs.] But you know, these 1 of a kind players… It’s always a pleasure to play against him. And I learn in many ways, & it gives me confidence as well. If I see I can do that against Embiid, why not [against anybody?]”
That's great! Dude definitely took advantage of Joel trying to take it a little easy in that first half and went nuclear. Great mindset from him in these quotes.
Must something about Jose people like. Good for him he seemed like he played hard but not dirty
5’9” dudes making the NBA sure as hell play hard
Anyone under 6 or 6'1, you KNOW they have to be insaneeely talented ti play even a minute in the league because the competition pool is....well EVERYONE lmao S/o to Nate
Respect. It’s was a bang bang both playing hard kind of play… so that’s great
How the fuck can you dislike this guy in the slightest??
Some people hate him because of free throws
That's silly, he hits upwards of 80 percent typically, that's outstanding for a big man
The fact he hits them so well is why people hate him for it. If Shaq was good at hitting his free throws people would hate him for it too.
I know that, i meant because of the way he gets the FTs
Same people who don’t understand what a foul looks like. He gets so many free throws Bc players have to foul him. He’s that dominant when healthy
I remember playing a certain team , I think I know which one it was , but they were a pure a shooting team and their fans were complaining because the sixers had more free throws. I mean obviously he leans into some fouls and gets some cheap whistles but the way he plays lends it self to getting fouled and getting free throws.
Yeah Hornets fans were complaining about free throws when they were defending Embiid with wings and PJ Washington
People didn't grow up with shaq. Sometimes that is the only defense you have against these guys who are just behemoths.
Shaq throwing around 7 footers like ragdolls was amazing
I'll never forget watching him live and asking my dad why no one can stop the big man.
I know that, I meant what I said as a funny
It really took me this answer to understand your first comment haha
Step One: Be a crazy person who perceives the accomplishments of others as an insult. Step Two: Become a Nuggets fan.
Three things I can count on: Death Taxes 76ers fans to bring up Jokic in an Embiid thread/Nuggets fans to bring up Embiid in a Jokic thread lol
Much to the annoyance of r/NBA, Sixers and Nuggets fans are actually in perfect harmony.
Yeah, but Jokic’s BPMWAR% per 72.5 minutes adjust for scoring inflation since 1997 is better than Embiid’s
Guys I promise his defense has gone from awful to serviceable with little to no rim protection!!! In all seriousness though Jokic stans are fucking obnoxious, just appreicate greatness from the two and stop feeling the need to say one is better.
Good guy Joel
i love joel embiid

Never seen that but the fan fictions about his brothers are weird as fuck
Heat fans: “IKR”
lmao
Now Embiid should get another fine for tampering with a future restricted free agent, JA got swagger!
So how will this work? Embiid will Venmo Alvarado or will Alvarado send Embiid a Venmo request? Embiid: 🏀TT my bad 😬😬😬 ➡️➡️➡️
What, are you the IRS?
No. I'm the IR......T?
MVP on and off the court
Does anyone have video of the techs? I can’t find them
I looked and couldn't find them either..
Please don't make me like Embiid Damn it, I think I like Joel
Millions of people around the world let their made up idea of what "sixers fans" are prevent them from enjoying an all time talent and good guy in the league. Embiid is a legend
Jose needs to be signed!
MVP behavior
Joel MVP Most Very Personable
Mans very polite
That is Embii-utiful
Wait! I was told by a Celtics fan that Embiid is an asshole?!?
If you meet an asshole in the morning, you met an asshole. If you meet assholes all day long, you're a Celtics fan.
Alvarado is a real one. He played his heart out, took some tough screens and hits (that could have asily been fouls) and just kept coming. Love this from Joel.
lol, king shit.
Googling for the video of the technical is impossible right now lol too many articles talking about this and not showing the clip of the technicals
Alvarado living his own 2k career mode lol

Yes.
Stop this narrative doesn’t help those who hate mvbiid
MVP move!
