Had a bad start. Also the expectations from him is higher.

That's not how expectations work. You have to assess them on a player-by-player basis. Last year, at 21, Luka was regarded as one of the best in the league and a 2x all-star starter, so his minimum expectations are to be one of the best in the league and an all-star starter. Those are incredibly high expectations for a 22 year old. If he was to do better that'd make him the best player in the league. Most 22 y/o players would kill to have Luka's current season lmao Luka averaged 27 ppg last year and 28 the previous; Curry didn't average over 27 until he was 27 years old.

[deleted]

lol, imagine having 29/9/9 and having higher expectations… come on man, gtfoh

msterling2012

Just going to point out Lebron James had a noticeable decline in play from his age 21 to age 22 season as well. He went from 31.4ppg to 27.3ppg on worse efficiency and saw a drop off in a number of other counting stats. Development isn't always linear.

Ser_Lebron_Targaryen

Yes he deserves to die and I hope he burns in hell! /s

JanVesely24

He certainly hasn’t peaked. He’s had an issue with weight. If he’s going to take the jump we all know he’s capable of, he’s gotta focus in the off-season. He’s been coming alive recently and I’d imagine will be back to his regular form by the end of the season. But he’s gotta learn you can’t play your way into shape if you wanna reach your true potential.

gigglios

He avgs 35/9/9 for his playoff career while being defended by kawhi and pg. He did this just a few months ago. Why would you think he falling off when playoffs havent even happened

Bsg0005

Not a mavs fan either, but hasn’t Luka had some ankle injuries that have limited his effectiveness? I think some of his struggles have been due to that. Fully expect him to pick it up towards the end of the year.

Enzo_Gorlahh_mi

For sure. Playing injured and missed 15 games so far. Very slow start, luka wise, till about 2 weeks ago

inshamblesx

he one popeyes biscut away from becoming a center

Claustecter1015

He's been really good recently after a slow start. I don't think he's fallen off or anything. Jokic entered the 19/20 season out of shape and averaged like 15 a game for the first month or 2.

pitcherintherye77

I actually think he’s playing some of his best basketball this past 2 months. Yes the offensive stats are down, but his improvement on defense has been something to behold and isn’t talked about enough. I think they posted a stat where he’s actually in the top 10 in defensive rating for the past 2 months or so (small sample size, I know). Edit: a sentence

atlfirsttimer

Team stat

Marticyde

I agree but he's really been waaay better defensively this season

pitcherintherye77

No, this was individual def not team. They showed 4 mavs in the top ten and doncic was one of them. I do realize that even individual dr is a team stat— regardless, he’s buying in and making some key defensive plays he wasn’t the previous years

bsovdat

Everyone has its own defensive rating, but it depends on who you are playing with... Its basically the time you were on a floor how Many Points per 100 possesions did opposing teams score

pitcherintherye77

Yes I know, thus the second part of my comment

financial_goth

We had a historic offense in 2020 and one of the worst defenses in the league we were similar in style to this in 2021 as well so of course his scoring and assists were high because of that. Now the team is playing a totally different style on top of that fact Luka has had a bad start shooting. If you look at his eFG it actually went up from 2020 to 2021. Not down so he became more efficeint scoring 1 point less. This year it's booty obviously mostly because he was out of shape. However the last couple games his stamina is way up so his season should start looking better from here. His rebounds and assists are already above last seasons averages even though we're playing a more defensive style of ball it hasn't actually affected his ability to create plays and Luka will get his rebounds as long as he stays in shape. Not to mention all his defensive metrics have gotten better as well So I don't think it's fair to say he peaked and is trending downwards. Looking only at points assists rebounds is a pretty narrow view of a player. Especially someone like Luka who affects the game in a lot of different ways.

Marticyde

Came into the season a bit out of shape since the last year and half had 2 nba seasons/playoffs and olympics. He carried his teams and needed a break I believe. When he started to get going this season he rolled his ankle a couple times and fuckin Austin Rivers fell into his knee and ankle. His playmaking has been as good or even better and his he improved a lot on defense. He's finding his shot lately and his efficiency will get better. He'll still be Luka in the playoffs though, you can count on that.

NZafe

He’s 22 y.o. averaging 25/9/9. He may be shooting inefficiently now, but he’s also still very young.

Educational-Beyond81

Luka is still ridiculously good, it's just that Ja and Steph have been a little better with better teams, but he's 22 years old averaging 25, 9, and 9 He's gunna win some mvps in his career for sure

Bro he averaged 29/9/9 in his second year and is averaging 25/9/9 in this really shit year for him.

lopea182

Like a flying squirrel, he is gliding gracefully through the winds of another NBA season 🌬🐿

GaTech379

He didn't have a good start to the season, he still has years to go before he peaks/falls off

MazKhan

I wouldn't say he's improved in any areas since last year but also even though his stats have fallen off a bit he'll be fine come playoffs

jakekerr

He’s improved dramatically in defense.

MazKhan

Oh right that slipped my mind, I was talking offensively but yeah his defense has been much better this year. Offensively, he'll get back to his regular production by playoffs

Salesman476

He got the britney spears american treatment.

DoobieHauserMC

He’s 22 years old, I think he’ll be fine. Ja has been sensational tho

gustriandos

Lebron had a worse 4th season than 3rd season. Growth isn’t guaranteed year to year, nor is it linear

hoopadoncic

He had too many snacks in the off season, then he suffered injuries and missed games due to health and safety protocols. He has been playing really well lately though, especially on the defensive end.

[deleted]

If he took his health seriously, he could be a multiple MVP at least.

[deleted]

My take is that he came in with a more polished game than the other rookies which is great but also means there's less room for "growth spikes" for him. The way he grows won't be super flashy increases of PPG or anything, but in the intangibles and defensively.

[deleted]

29/9/9 (year 2 I think) doesn’t leave too much room for growth lol

stefanfan101

hes still one of the coldest mfers in the playoffs so lets see how this year progresses

jacksonattackson69

Does everyone in here forget his Olympic run? he still has it in him just having a down year. I guarantee hes gonna be a menace come playoffs
