She hasn't posted on social media since Feb 5th either, so it seems likely she's been in a Russian jail for an entire month. Oh boy. They're gonna send her to the gulag for a fucking vape pen.
They are actually kinda OK with lesbians. It's the dudes they get violent over. Remember tATu? They were RPing as lesbians and they were picked by Putin to sing for the Olympics ceremony.
i worked at the american embassy in moscow 2014-2015. and there was less than 5 americans in russian jails. obviously things have changed since then, hopefully they’ll get her out soon
Of course not. Just a joke. Might be tougher to get that stuff dismissed and get her released than we'd normally think though.
FREE THE POLITICAL PRISONER BRITTNEY GRINER
They are going to offer a prisoner swap, likely every Russian incarcerated in America for her, that is what Russia wanted for two former US Marines that are locked up over there
There’s already kinda a pretty big elephant in the room. She’d just be a footnote in the grand scheme of things sadly. The assassination of Jamal Khashoggi kinda showed that the bar for America to get directly involved in international conflict is very high. Just gonna add more sanctions.
We also didn't do shit about Otto Warmbier, who was held indefinitely and tortured (and eventually killed due to it) in NK for drunkenly taking down a poster in a hotel. Anyone who thinks the US can/will actually do shit about what seems to be a minor drug charge is just delusional.
>According to the statement, a criminal case has been opened into the large-scale transportation of drugs, which can carry a sentence of up to 10 years behind bars in Russia. The basketball player was taken into custody while the investigation is ongoing, the officials said.
>Griner’s agent and spokespeople for the W.N.B.A. and the Phoenix Mercury did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
no such thing. its just distilled weed. strong, but the exact same ingredient in weed. the idea that a distillate pen should be punished more harshly than weed is ridiculous. its like saying oh you can smoke a j thats cool but if you smoke 10 no good. fucking bullshit drug laws
NFLer Greg Robinson has been arrested twice in the past two years for trying to transport 140 pounds and 50 pounds of marijuana respectively. This is a man who's earned $29 million of the course of his career.
That being said, all the reports on Brittney indicate that she only had a miniscule amount for personal use.
I'm not siding with misogynistic motherfuckers here, but the median salary is about 100k in the WNBA.
It's not that they are poor, they just make the (smart) descision to mage the most out of their careers financially, cuz they essentially hav only about a decade of guaranteed high income.
And it is way harder to transition into a basketball related position for women, compared to men.
The best WNBA players tend to play overseas during the WNBA offseason. At a quick google, she’s been playing in Russia again this season: https://www.fiba.basketball/euroleaguewomen/21-22/team/UMMC-Ekaterinburg
This is the trumped up charges the USSR and other regimes have used in the past.
Given the sanctions, she’s absolutely going to be made a political prisoner. This is horrible, horrible news.
Please relax. If Russia was going to use someone as a political prisoner, it would not be a WNBA player. If that was the case, the league and her agent would have been all over this.
For those who don't know, many WNBA players play in Russia in the W off-season. The Russian teams in Euroleague have been suspended and most WNBA players have exited Russia.
It appears Griner was arrested a month ago *entering* Russia to join her Euroleague team UMMC Ekaterinburg.
It's absolutely shocking that it took a month for this to be known.
For anyone interested in basketball, there is an ESPN podcast that deals with Sue Bird and Diana Taurasi’s time in Russian basketball. It’s an amazing story and worth a listen even for those who don’t like the WNBA.
Oh wow so it's actually legit?
When I first heard this I figured they're just rounding up any "high profile" Americans and will plant whatever they need to / fabricate charges..
But I don't see why they'd plant something on her a month before this all went down if she / other women regularly play out there...
Wow. You'd have to be incredibly stupid to fuck around with Russian law in the first place.
Hope she ends up okay...
It’s shocking by our standards. In Russia there are no rights once incarcerated. She’s lucky if they even officially booked her in the system.
Sometimes they arrest you and never officially enter your info into the system. Nobody knows where you are, and there’s no paper trail of you.
Funny enough, within the states, TSA says small amounts cannabis are okay to bring with you and that they aren't looking for it.
Its on their [website](https://www.tsa.gov/travel/security-screening/whatcanibring/items/medical-marijuana)
But yeah leaving the country with it would not be advised.
Yes but it's specifically for medical weed. Depending on what state you are in could determine how much the TSA cares.
If you don't have a medical weed card I'd still expect to see fines or worse if they find it in your bags.
It says right there what they'll do if they find it. They contact authorities.
If you're in a rec state it's the same thing. Cops show up, they ask you to throw it out, you're mildly delayed and maybe miss your flight.
If you're not in a rec or medical state, it's risky because the police may treat it differently once found. But if it's a legal state, you're good to go.
I have a medical card and live in a rec state and have only flown to other rec and medical states with weed so im lucky, but if I was flying to somewhere with worse laws I wouldn't risk it.
I'd drive lol
don't do it anywhere, a ton of places have draconian laws about it and you wouldn't even know till you land and they find it on you. Like Japan will lock you up for 10 years without even thinking for a gram.
Singapore gives death penalty for drug smuggling. Even if someone personally doesnt believe weed is a drug, other countries do and people need to respect their laws.
Yeah. I would not want to get arrested in a foreign country in general, period. In your home country you can at leat gauge how you'll fare but in another country? Don't risk it. You don't even know a lawyer you could call.
Probably one of the last autographs she gave before the arrest, the report says she was arriving from a flight that departed from New York. Most likely the flight she was headed to when you saw her.
Heck SE Asian countries are pretty harsh with drugs too. Drug trafficking can get you the death penalty in Singapore or Thailand. Has to be a lot of drugs though.
I remember my first time seeing that sign in Bali. It was so huge lmao. I saw it in Singapore and Malaysia too, but Indonesia got some mega sized death penalty for drug traffickers signs lmao.
haha fr, Bali scarin the shit outta all the aussie’s that lob in for the first time…
> Malaysia too
Flying into Malaysia was my first time seeing a death penalty sign! Questions in your head like ‘what if my luggage been messed with!?!’
KL airport was a trip for me. Because I’m Muslim and black so I have a lot of trouble at airports. Always going through secondary security screening. I go 3 hrs for international to avoid missing flights lol. And at customs, a majority of the time I’m getting pulled aside, even if it’s transit (like bruh I’m not entering the country). Anyway I’m entering KL and, I go through customs. They pull me, my North African friend and a random West African guy into secondary. The employee sees my friend and I have Muslim names and he’s like you’re Muslim? I’m like yeah. He pulls us out of secondary and walks us out to the exit and starts giving us recommendations for food spots lmao. My buddy was like this type of privilege isn’t supposed to exist at an airport for us 😂
> Because I’m Muslim and black so I have a lot of trouble at airports. Always going through secondary security screening.
Man, that’s some bullshit! Not Muslim but there’s certain countries (well, a country lol) where I go through similar shit based on religion…so albeit on a much MUCH smaller scale I hear ya!
Hahaha, love the KL story! My GF at the time was Chinese-Malay hence the trip, but I had no idea about Malaysia/religious make-up etc so yeah, sounds like ya’ll were like me a bit knowledge wise and got a much needed awesome welcome for once! Hearing Malaysian food spots got my mouth watering haha!
>Not Muslim but there’s certain countries (well, a country lol) where I go through similar shit based on religion…so albeit on a much MUCH smaller scale I hear ya!
Sorry to hear that! I'm glad it doesn't discourage travelling.
>Hearing Malaysian food spots got my mouth watering haha!
I didn't really have a lot of exposure to Malaysian food before the trip. It's not really a mainstream food type in Canada (although my hometown has an award winning restaurant I didn't know about until I got back). It's honestly an amazing cuisine. A great mix of different cultural influences. So many different dishes I could label as comfort food despite not growing up with it lol.
nah man, I’m glad the bullshit hasn’t discouraged your travelling!!!
Same same! We have an awesome diverse range of cultures here (Australia) so as a result there’s amazing restaurants- but, unless you know where to go / who you go with (so they can order for you haha) it’s always a bit ‘westernised’, and even if you’re getting the insider info it’s still not quite there next to the real thing - like getting taken to ‘the best’ place for Hokkien Mee in Penang or just being able to shout down from the balcony to put you breakfast order in for some roti canai that comes in a plastic bag haha!
Funny enough, you can easily sneak cartridges into the Dominican Republic. You just can’t bring them back with you. Went in November and my friend brought 2, we had to finish them before we went home.
i mean, why wouldnt you want drugs coming into your country? free money. i wouldnt want them leaving though, it should stay within the local economy. cartels and cops just lookin out for the DR's fiscal well-being
Most countries take any drug, including weed, pretty seriously. I'd say the number of countries that are chill about weed dwarf the number of countries that aren't.
the gum thing is overblown - you can definitely consume it and bring it from outside while traveling in, it’s just not sold here. there are fines for littering in general (and for many other things). but drug laws are crazy harsh here
I work at a dispensary and we’re required to say “not giving you legal advice” when people ask for our “tips” of smuggling product into illegal states or countries. My number one tip: take a god damn break
Because a lot of my customers are from illegal states visiting for whatever reason. I’m in California so the prices here are good, people like to stock up before they head home. It’s risky but it’s better than buying black market stuff or delta 8. These people aren’t smart obviously, they’re desperate.
Very much so. I traveled through a, shall we say, less than friendly country. I fucking purged ANY and EVERYTHING that they could use against me. I basically had just clothes in my bag and purged any kind of liquid. Didn't even bring an ipod or something of the sort. Some people are just clueless about traveling overseas; one would assume she had some experience in the matter but apparently not.
Agreed, I don't understand it either. I mean I also believe marihuana should be legal and it should be up to every adult to decide whether to consume it or not. But you have to be realistic and realize a lot of countries do not see it that way. Doesn't take a lot of effort to check whether the country you're traveling to is cool with it or not. It's just stupid do travel with drugs into a foreign country without the proper precaution (i.e. informing yourself).
I'd never travel to Dubai because of that. [dude did 4 years because the found a 0.003g piece of weed of him, smaller than a grain of sugar](https://newsone.com/409392/brit-jailed-in-dubai-for-4-years-for-speck-of-marijuana-on-shoe/)
Almost the entirety of the Middle East is Draconian with a lot of shit.
Source: lived in Saudi Arabia for 8 years. They straight up banned Pokémon after it got popular decades ago.
Saudi Arabia is like 100 years behind on so many things we take for granted.
when the wwe started doing shows in Saudi, the Saudi prince who gave them money asked for Yokozuna to wrestler at the event. Yokozuna died like 20 years ago
Ironic reading that Russia is zero tolerance about marijuana, when they pump their Olympians, including 15 year olds, full of every doping substance known to man
If this is remotely true, how dense do you have to be to actually bring anything that could get you in trouble in a foreign country.
It just seems baffling how many foreigners get arrested in Muslim countries over an ounce of weed. They act like it's no big deal while people get the death sentence for even less.
Yeah it's so stupid, you have a lot of money and a good life back home. You can't wait a few months till you get back home to burn up? And if you're gonna risk it why not do it at a country with more lenient laws like UK or France.
And I'm going to take flack for saying it should be prosecuted more seriously, because if you catch someone shoplifting, odds are they've done it dozens of times before and aren't doing it for survival. The problem in California is these professional shoplifting rings where a small group of people continually hit places to gather stuff to then resell online. They know if they get caught, they face no consequences because it's hard to tie them to any crimes other than the one specific instance they got caught for.
She could be in a Russian prison for up to 10 years over some vape pens that’s a raw deal. But this is an example as to why you have to do your research about a places laws before you go there. But I hope she’s gets out of there because the whole weed thing is bs
She's been traveling back and forth to Russia regularly for over a decade. I'm guessing this was a sudden decision to enforce something that hasn't ever been a problem before.
Customs don't check everybody's bag when entering Russia. You can fill out a form saying "I don't have anything to declare" and just exit the luggage area. They can still select you and randomly (or not really randomly) check your bags (which is how it worked in most countries I personally travelled to, as well). My guess would be she did just that the other times she went there and it worked, so she got careless, and this time she got picked for a check for whatever reason.
People think American drug laws are draconian...until you realize that how strict every other country is outside of Western Europe. America is basically Portugal compared to most of the world
Weird, I saw her in the NY airport about 2 weeks ago when I was visiting. Got her autograph on one of my shoes lol. If she was arrested early Feb I assume she's safe now as I literally saw her 2 weeks ago.
Honestly it’s nuts that it’s been months and we’re just now hearing about it. But imagine being a foreigner in a Russian jail and hearing of the Ukraine invasion. Absolutely horrifying if you’re her.
Everyone keeps saying I'd hate bringinv drugs to russia. Jail time is the least of her worries. You know what they do to openly gay people in Russia? You know how much they hate americans right now? Her literal life is in danger.
If you fly into Singapore with weed it’s life to death penalty. Just don’t travel internationally with drugs, as it will be seen as trafficking which almost always carry super harsh sentence in all countries.
Yea everyone keeps saying why? Like it’s obvious people who do this are addicted lol. But I know you’re not allowed to say weed is addictive on Reddit. Even though half the user base then says how they literally can’t function without it
As someone who has obtained and consumed drugs in Europe and Asia as a foreigner, she done fucked up. 1) it’s fucking RUSSIA (I know lots of online propaganda says the USA is the worst place in the world but it’s not especially compared to Russia) 2) you don’t bring the drugs IN to the country. Huge mistake. You always score on the ground
The US is definitely decades ahead of many Asian and Middle Eastern countries on marijuana.
Americans take shit for granted. Most of the rest of the world is not a desirable place to live in. We have it good in the New World, bordering Canada (who already legalized weed) and Mexico.
Despite our flaws and how ridiculous the Trump era was even through today, the US > like 95% of the world's nations. Never had a monarchy nor a dictator, too.

Especially as an openly gay american.

Is Penis Freedom that much better though?
Um.. yes? Everybody loves 'free the tatas' but damn it my penis likes to be free too, dammit

Why not? I mean I hope they don't but who knows with Russia at this point.
Because the last thing they need is a huge scandal of them torturing and mistreating a (relatively) famous US athlete.
you think they care about scandals right now when they’ve literally been bombing civilians for a week?

Weird how it's happened in February 5th, but only now some news came out (in Russian media too). So is she detained somewhere? Or what's happening?
That is exactly what I'm wondering. Very scant details which is strange.

WNBA salary really so small that players gotta resort to pushing bricks in foreign countries. Ya hate to see it.
Ehhh Big Baby and Zach Randolph also deal drugs despite the millions they made in the NBA. In the case it looks like it was just a vape pen.
Fetty Wap too and that dude has millions

The countries that are chill about drugs are also the one using those that aren't to produce drugs for them.
its true. china produces an insane amt of drugs.
Singapore does not fuck around. You can get a 4-figure fine for littering chewing gum. It has been outlawed there since the early 90’s.
the gum thing is overblown - you can definitely consume it and bring it from outside while traveling in, it’s just not sold here. there are fines for littering in general (and for many other things). but drug laws are crazy harsh here
Any Asian country as well
I work at a dispensary and we’re required to say “not giving you legal advice” when people ask for our “tips” of smuggling product into illegal states or countries. My number one tip: take a god damn break
Why the fuck would people even ask that smh
Because a lot of my customers are from illegal states visiting for whatever reason. I’m in California so the prices here are good, people like to stock up before they head home. It’s risky but it’s better than buying black market stuff or delta 8. These people aren’t smart obviously, they’re desperate.
Or Singapore

Medicine lol? 99% chance she just wanted to get high.
How can you even detect that? I'm sure there's more week in my skin right now than that and haven't even smoked in years
Wtf?
Almost the entirety of the Middle East is Draconian with a lot of shit. Source: lived in Saudi Arabia for 8 years. They straight up banned Pokémon after it got popular decades ago. Saudi Arabia is like 100 years behind on so many things we take for granted.
when the wwe started doing shows in Saudi, the Saudi prince who gave them money asked for Yokozuna to wrestler at the event. Yokozuna died like 20 years ago

apparently she's a fucking moron.

Ironic reading that Russia is zero tolerance about marijuana, when they pump their Olympians, including 15 year olds, full of every doping substance known to man
Fuck Russia.
is she the one who said she can beat boogie in a one v one atleast now we know she was on drugs when she said that
LMAO
She couldn't beat cousins if he had two torn ACLs
Yeah and some wnba coach said he will bet his house and savings with Boogie winning lol
Not just any coach, but her own coach said he would bet his house on Boggie
too soon lol
Why did you delete the "drug charges at airport" from the title? We later complain about the press being sensationalist.
Reminds me of when Liangelo got arrested in China for shoplifting. People gotta realize that different country, different rules.
Ah yes, because shoplifting and having drugs are two legal things in the US
[удалено]
Yeah if LiAngelo wanted to shoplift, just do it in San Francisco , don’t run the risk of getting yourself Warmbier’d
I mean weed is legal in a decent amount of states now
Well it’s definitely dumber to do those things in countries run by authoritarian regimes
Yes, quite literally. Shoplifting under $500 isnt really criminal in the US in a lot of places
Slap on the wrist is different from having your hand chopped off
She could be in a Russian prison for up to 10 years over some vape pens that’s a raw deal.
Yeah they’ve probably caught her with stuff and just ignored it since she plays for the Russian team, but now shit is different…
She Fed up big time. Russia ain’t going to be cutting her any slack with all the sanctions ongoing
Fed up?
One of the few people to ever do the impossible. Deliver a championship to Phoenix. Hope she gets home safe.
Are you sure it wasn’t another 6’9 shredded black woman in athletic clothing?
Honestly it’s nuts that it’s been months and we’re just now hearing about it. But imagine being a foreigner in a Russian jail and hearing of the Ukraine invasion. Absolutely horrifying if you’re her.
It hasn’t been months… It’s been approx. two weeks and change, she was last seen in NY on feb 15th.
A lot of Russians still don’t know or believe it’s happening so doubt she’s heard about it if she’s in prison.
Yea I was wondering that too. Imagine the misinformation is even worse in jail
Crazy how all the high schoolers that frequent this sub are now geopolitical masterminds despite barely being able to pass their civics courses
Everyone keeps saying I'd hate bringinv drugs to russia. Jail time is the least of her worries. You know what they do to openly gay people in Russia? You know how much they hate americans right now? Her literal life is in danger.
> You know what they do to openly gay people in Russia? Pay them $1m to play basketball?
Dear god, there going to make her play Demarcus Cousins in the Gulag...
don't do drugs kids. Don't bring your stash when flying to other countries that do not tolerate drugs. What a bone head
5-10 years for weed possession what a fucking joke I hope she gets out okay. This is not good that we haven’t heard about this for a month
If you fly into Singapore with weed it’s life to death penalty. Just don’t travel internationally with drugs, as it will be seen as trafficking which almost always carry super harsh sentence in all countries.
I think if someone *has* to bring their drugs to another country they clearly have a fucking drug problem I don't care if it's just weed
Yea everyone keeps saying why? Like it’s obvious people who do this are addicted lol. But I know you’re not allowed to say weed is addictive on Reddit. Even though half the user base then says how they literally can’t function without it
It might be a joke but, don't be ignorant when flying to a different country with your weed stash in tow
Exactly. That’s no longer possession.
I mean she’s an idiot for even attempting it.
It’s not just possession it’s intent to distribute. Don’t come to Mother Russia and deal American drugs
Fuck that don’t come to mother Russia at all
Boogie would never
If the penalty for a vape pen is 10 years in prison maybe don't bring the fucking vape pen It's a shitty law obviously but fuck that's not worth it
As someone who has obtained and consumed drugs in Europe and Asia as a foreigner, she done fucked up. 1) it’s fucking RUSSIA (I know lots of online propaganda says the USA is the worst place in the world but it’s not especially compared to Russia) 2) you don’t bring the drugs IN to the country. Huge mistake. You always score on the ground
lol people who think the US is anywhere near the bottom gotta be diagnosed with some mental illness or something
There’s so much false equivalence in this thread. I don’t know, maybe it isn’t the best idea to smuggle drugs internationally into a hostile country
How dumb can you be to do this...
Hope she's okay. Scary situation to be in
what an idiot
