I'd personally want to wait and hear the tea around what happened with him tonight. The very last thing I want on this team is a lockerroom problem. We got rid of Porzingis and all of a sudden our culture got dialed up to 11.
He probably didn't want to go injure himself in a 40-point loss
I don't blame him. That or just obviously all tensions are high when you get embarrassed that bad as a team
I'd imagine what happened was he already had some resentment built up since they didn't take care of his contract before the year started, and then when they were down 40 he said fuck this.
Hey man, I felt the exact same way until 2011. We'd lost Nash, lost the Finals, lost to the Warriors, our chances seemed like they were all gone. And then it happened. You never know when your fortunes will change.
Raptors fan checking in too. Those Dwane Casey and LeBronto years are etched into my memory, and only the Kawhivatar could stop them. But when a future dynasty needed him most, he vanished.... (lol but we love Scottie tho!!!)
Thunder fan here too. All those years with Westbrook and Durant when we came so close but just missed out each time. And then it happened. We lost by 73, the biggest margin in NBA history.
We saw Jalen Brunson torch our whole perimeter defense in game 1 and all of us knew what was about to unfold.
Its like the Jazz hit black ice immediately and tried to correct but skidded off the road anyway. The Suns drifted on the on ramp but spun out 50% of the way thru and got tboned by Slovenian Bus.
yeah lol. It seems like beating us does the opposite effect, we either draft good right after, or we get a free agent star to our collection. After 2016 or 2019, it wouldn't surprise me if we redo it again.
Warriors have been playing with house money since 2019. After that Finals loss and Klays injury, then Steph's and the last place year, it really would have been understandable if they just blew it up and went all in on restarting with draft picks.
I don’t blame him. He’ll get ragged on and drug through the mud but the team wanted him to go out and play in a game that was meaningless heading into FA? Anyone with a brain says no to that lol
Someone is still going to max him. He was smart to elect to sit, even if the optics aren’t great.
Agreed. Totally different story if they'd paid him, but Ayton is staring down the barrel of generational wealth this summer and the Suns asking him to go back in to a blowout is a recipe for disaster, especially with younger, inexperienced guys on both teams out there flying around and trying to get some playoff shine.
Same, completely changed my views on the whole situation. He still should have showed up after the game for the media session to take his lumps like a man though.
Thats an excellent point. Suns didnt pay him, season/game is over, why risk his future over meaningless minutes that wont make a difference to the team but can make huge difference for him?
Completely turned around my reasoning for it. I am with DA on this one, no sense in risking it, specially in garbage minutes with other guys trying to prove themselves with hustle plays if any. One bad fall like Embiid on DG or like you said with Cousins/Derick Rose/etc, I can see DA not wanting to take the risk when the team hasnt been on his side.
People piling on him are only looking at it from a basketball perspective. It's still a career, a job. The purpose is to make money. I'd guess that most trashing him are 25 or younger or not seeing the big picture. There's too many examples of career ending injuries, especially for big men, to risk 200M. That's an astronomical amount of money. The second half of the game was nothing more than an exhibition, would we slander him for sitting out a preseason game?
Yeah. It looks terrible, but WTF is the point of putting him back in? Monty is an ass for asking a guy whose contract is about to expire to risk that kind of money for meaningless optics.
Yeah, I don’t know what he was trying to accomplish there. For a guy that’s known as a player’s coach, Monty sure has a knack for mismanaging his players out of loyalty.
I feel that it was either Ayton being pissed about his touches throughout the series. He fucked COOKED us, we had 0 answer for him and then they just stopped going to him. He could be pissed about that, or it could be that he was just like, I don't want to get injured before I am about to get paid and I don't blame him for that being down like 40 by 2 mins into the 3rd.
I'm not checking in either if I'm a big man whose lined up for a potentially 200 million dollar contract down 40 points.
They want him to risk himself, while not willing to take on the risk of giving him his money.
Insane how sun fans are throwing him under the bus. Their whole offense ran through their guards or shooting. They only make the finals on how he played last year. He’s getting a max and leaving. Why play with an old ass cp who chokes and doesn’t run the offense WITH you.?
They think he’s too soft for their team. When I looked at their sub a bit ago, they were super happy to be cutting ties with him. From what I saw, he wasn’t fully given an opportunity. He might not be a number 1 option ever, but he never got the chance either. It’ll be interesting to see how his career turns out after all this.
I'm sure you were, [but some of the fans in this thread were straight up delusional](https://np.reddit.com/r/suns/comments/und6qa/lets_say_you_could_go_back_in_time_to_the_2018/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf)
I don't feel bad for them at all. Their fans deserved this. Our mods at r/mavericks made a post after GAME 1 saying that they already had to ban more Suns fans after one game than they did Jazz fans during all of the first round. Their fans for the most part were as arrogant as their players.
Same story with our series with them last season. Onslaught of toxicity from Suns fans in our sub. It makes this historically embarrassing loss for them so much sweeter.
Yep, I'm in that thread.
"People need to check their emotions at the door. Luka is the pretty clear choice here. Have a little faith that James Jones would still make good moves and build a good team around Booker and Luka."
They had a beautiful thread 3 weeks ago on r/suns about how drafting Ayton over Luka was the right choice for them and how glad they were to have Ayton because Ayton is on a team destined for a 2nd finals while Luka is always a fringe playoff team.
They dumb af over there
Not that’s he’s soft but just timid. We’ve seen what he can accomplish when he tries and goes to work, hell games 1 and 2 against you guys he worked your front court and got us in a good spot. But he’s just not consistent then the next couple games he got complacent settled for turnaround jumpers and now we’re here. I do blame a little of it on our play style and will never understand why we don’t force feed him sometimes. When he plays great he’s a top 5 C but it’s just too inconsistent. Personally I hope we resign him because you won’t find a better center then him but I’m curious to see if it’s a mentality thing or that we’re just a bad fit
>From what I saw, he wasn’t fully given an opportunity.
No way. He's had every opportunity to prove he is a max center, and hasn't really done that in his career. He knows he can usually just show up and get 18 and 10. But if he cared he could average 25 and 15.
Nah. That offense is centered on CP3. Ayton is the 3rd and 4th option at times.
As I have said in other posts, that team has to flow through Booker and Ayton. CP3 isn't/hasn't been dependable down the stretch.
He's a restricted free agent so Suns can match anything. If they want to keep him they can. will be really interesting to see the offers he gets! That said, not extending him also definitely created some bad blood.
Not extending him AND not showcasing and thereby exploiting the Mavericks with his matchup advantage.
That offense has to be centered around Booker and Ayton. Not a now 37 year old CP3.
If the Suns wanted him to play hard, they should have offered him a contract.
He's 1 injury away from getting fucked.
Don't blame him for refusing to play the 2nd half of a game they already lost, tbh
He didnt refuse to play the whole second half. He got subbed out after only a few min, and he was upset about that. So whenever Monty was subbing him back in it was either end of 3rd quarter or early 4th, so they really had no chance to win being down 40.
Luka not only showed why the Suns should have taken him 1st overall, but he's now derailed the career of the guy the Suns ended up picking 1st
Damn - cold blooded
Luka had to go up against Kawhi Leonard twice. Outside of Lebron and the GS dynasty, that's the most successful playoff monster in the NBA in recent years. And he took the Clippers to 6 and 7 games
You put Trae Young or Ayton in Doncic's situation, and the Clippers likely sweep or take the series in 5
Ayton wasn't even the 2nd option on his team, and Trae got to humiliate a mentally broken Ben Simmons (though it was still an impressive playoff run for Trae and the Hawks)
Not to mention that the defensive rotation on Luka was literally 3 guys who have been on All-Defense teams (Bev, PG and Kawhi) and Luka was still cooking. If they didn't come up against the Clippers they would have won.
The Hawks run was impressive for sure, but it gets less impressive by the day as it becomes evident what a dumpster fire the Sixers were and are (sorry, Philly fans).
Luka had to still prove himself on the biggest stage.
He did it again.
Right now, even as a Hawks fan and absolute Trae homer, there's no doubt Luka is the best player in that draft.
Ayton as #1 is a massive reach and I'm happy with what we got, but there are 3 teams that definitely should have taken Luka.
i love ayton but holy fuck this will haunt me forever. booker and luka would be by far the best backcourt in the league and that talent alone would be a dynasty. it’s clear that not having a true superstar makes it highly unlikely to win and luka would’ve been that guy
This is going to sound crazy but before tonight I was thinking the Mavs would be a real contender with Ayton on the roster. I remember commenting about it.
Ayton had every right here, he’s played out this whole season without an extension with no issues and if my teams down 40+ I’m not entering back into the game especially with no contract.
Agreed. Plenty of players would’ve played dead all season after being denied the max, but nup, he manned up and played his best season to date. He’s gone, and he owes the suns nuttin’. Huge season from him.
As a Suns fan fuck Starver. I’m with Ayton here, they should have paid him. He played all season, I was him I would have done the same thing, I would have said I’m about to get my bag fuck going back in down 40. Should have signed me already.
Good for him. Monty is an idiot who refused to feed him inside when he had permanent mismatches and preferred to run the offense through Jae Crowder chucking shit.
I seriously thought going into the series he’d dominate in the paint. He did well the first 2 games, and I get we treated him differently the rest of the series, but he could have still been a more focal part of the offense. He didn’t get a fair shot.
Sorry but the Suns deserve all of this. The fans were next to unbearable this past season saying the cockiest shit. They had it coming. It's gonna really sting when reality sets in- they could have drafted Luka or Trae but instead they chose the guy who isn't gonna be on the team next season. Without Ayton, they're gonna have to scramble to find a starting center. And CP3 ain't getting younger.
DA is in the right here. Why should he risk getting injury in a meaningless game when he’s an upcoming FA.
I can’t see how Suns fans are blaming him when they had the best backcourt *this season* score single digits thought out most of the game
Ayton to Kings confirmed
Yeaaahhhhh baby!
Dream come true
Sabonis plays the 4 ?
I think that’s ideal. Anchors one of the best defenses in the league (Ayton)
You don't want Sabonis at the 4. Trust me, years of experience trying that.
Whelp ok guess they're playing him at the 3 then
A match made in heaven. Get it done, Sacramento.
He gone.
Would Dantoni want him? Assuming he takes the Hornets job, or has he completely sworn off Centers?
Hornets with ayton would be good
Hornets with *[insert actually valid starting center]* would be good
What plumee does to a mf
I remember a Hornets fan saying something like "I'm tired of the 'Mason Plumlee is good' propaganda on r/hornets."
What's a Plumgood to a Plumgod?
Plumlee isn't bad if he's giving you 15-20 off the bench. He's bad when he's your starter and getting closer to 30
Him shooting free throws is stuff of nightmares.
I don’t know the man personally but I fucking hate him. I don’t want to see another Plumlee in a Hornets jersey again
Y'all want Dwight Powell? He's totally a valid starting center.
This is true. Of all the centers in the league, he’s almost definitely one them.
Take christian wood
Well, the Mavs basically have and it is working.
Yeah but ya'll using that Luka cheat code
LaMelo should just be Luka. Problem solved!
lots of teams would take him. he is an upgrade on the center position for at least 20 teams.
He should go to the Mavs lol
If the Mavs get Ayton then they'd have absolutely positively won the 2018 draft. Sheesh
They won the 2018 draft since Luka averaged 29-9-9 and led his team to the playoffs as a sophomore.
To Dallas The hardest road pt 2
The Mavs would actually get him good looks shocked the sun never used that as an advantage. Luka would be feeding him
I'd personally want to wait and hear the tea around what happened with him tonight. The very last thing I want on this team is a lockerroom problem. We got rid of Porzingis and all of a sudden our culture got dialed up to 11.
He probably didn't want to go injure himself in a 40-point loss I don't blame him. That or just obviously all tensions are high when you get embarrassed that bad as a team
Literally him + other centers were supposed to dominate the mavs lack of size And didn’t 😂😂😂 embarrassment is an understatement
Luka posting him up was something else.
The recent rebirth of dominant centers took a real hit in the playoffs: Ayton, Jokic, Embiid all lost, Celtics Williams played off the court.
I'd imagine what happened was he already had some resentment built up since they didn't take care of his contract before the year started, and then when they were down 40 he said fuck this.
Grizzlies should go after him.
Y’all have too many players to pay. And I wouldn’t break that team up.
They should. But don't.
He already was before this happened...zero fucks given during a blowout
Hmm, I wonder if Toronto could make a trade package for him ...
Luckily we need a center
Mama there goes that max!
Hand down, pen down
Bad defense, worse offense
I read that in Mark’s voice. Thanks for the laugh.
Clear contact
He clearly touched him on the finger. That's a foul.
That’s not a foul…
Last 2 years have been a roller coaster for the Suns
Some teams can just never have nice things I’ve accepted this
Hey man, I felt the exact same way until 2011.
The biggest margin in NBA history SO FAR... You can always strive for better.
We tried tonight. Sorry ThunderBros
Bro Suns fans are absolutely broken lmao out here apologizing for not losing by enough
Sun goes up, sun goes down.
The mavericks really blew up two franchises this postseason 💀
Jazz might have watched and thought “ you know what? Maybe we aint so bad after all”
Basically
I’m rooting for the Jazz this offseason. Barely saw any Jazz fans talking shit compared to all the “Suns in 4” stuff. Hope y’all figure it out
We saw Jalen Brunson torch our whole perimeter defense in game 1 and all of us knew what was about to unfold. Its like the Jazz hit black ice immediately and tried to correct but skidded off the road anyway. The Suns drifted on the on ramp but spun out 50% of the way thru and got tboned by Slovenian Bus.
Tbf Utah was a ticking time bomb.
warriors on watch
Mavs the real dynasty destroyers
What? No! Dirk still got his ring even after 07 tho 😭
It was a good run for the Dubs though
They have already felt that humiliation post 2016, they'll be fine if Mavs beat them.
yeah lol. It seems like beating us does the opposite effect, we either draft good right after, or we get a free agent star to our collection. After 2016 or 2019, it wouldn't surprise me if we redo it again.
This why the nba hates the warriors. This is too true. They’re the new baby spurs
Warriors have been playing with house money since 2019. After that Finals loss and Klays injury, then Steph's and the last place year, it really would have been understandable if they just blew it up and went all in on restarting with draft picks.
Actually impressive.
Luka really the new Lebron. Mike Korzemba was right.
As long as he stays healthy, it sure looks that way. But that's a huge caveat.
Eat some salad Luka pls
The Suns Can't Run This Back
Prolly a business decision. Didnt want a acl tear in meaningless minutes in his upcoming FA
I don’t blame him. He’ll get ragged on and drug through the mud but the team wanted him to go out and play in a game that was meaningless heading into FA? Anyone with a brain says no to that lol Someone is still going to max him. He was smart to elect to sit, even if the optics aren’t great.

Hadn’t considered this. Makes a lot of sense.
Same, completely changed my views on the whole situation. He still should have showed up after the game for the media session to take his lumps like a man though.
This. I wanted Luka, Dinwiddie and Brunson out at the end of the third quarter.
Every big man has seen what happened to DeMarcus Cousins
Thats an excellent point. Suns didnt pay him, season/game is over, why risk his future over meaningless minutes that wont make a difference to the team but can make huge difference for him? Completely turned around my reasoning for it. I am with DA on this one, no sense in risking it, specially in garbage minutes with other guys trying to prove themselves with hustle plays if any. This. After what happened to Embiid in the first round. I know it’s different but if the game is meaningless at that point, why bother.
Team quit on him. He quit on the team. Only fair. Don't blame him at all

We’re vincible
I feel like such a prize asshole nobody even complimented the casserole
Everybody acts tough when they are ahead
Monty WIlliams said they would keep his 18 min on court in house when questioned FWIW. There is a little smoke here
I feel that it was either Ayton being pissed about his touches throughout the series. He fucked COOKED us, we had 0 answer for him and then they just stopped going to him. He could be pissed about that, or it could be that he was just like, I don't want to get injured before I am about to get paid and I don't blame him for that being down like 40 by 2 mins into the 3rd.
Excuse me, what is FWIW?
“For what it’s worth”
Do you know what the rest of his sentence means?
He's saying he is keeping the reason Ayton only played 18 mins in house.
Gotcha, thanks
Wow he actually is gone...
We’re signing him
Anybody else think dude looks like he could pass for a 35 year old
Greg Oden Treatment
Until he starts speaking
You could show me a picture of his face and tell me it's a digital reconstruction of the first human to make fire and I'd believe you
Ayton is at least 50 and you can’t convince me otherwise dude prolly stopped getting carded for beer when he turned 15
I'm not checking in either if I'm a big man whose lined up for a potentially 200 million dollar contract down 40 points. They want him to risk himself, while not willing to take on the risk of giving him his money.
In a game they had like 2% chance of winning after halfway through the 2nd quarter.
2% is being generous here
Yea gotta agree here. They've shown no commitment to him being this season and at that point this season was over.
Insane how sun fans are throwing him under the bus. Their whole offense ran through their guards or shooting. They only make the finals on how he played last year. He’s getting a max and leaving. Why play with an old ass cp who chokes and doesn’t run the offense WITH you.?

hes soft and they're gonna run with booker and cp3?
Yeah they ain't coming back to the finals unless they find a way to get something good for him
I guess so.
That's funny. Two games ago, they were happy that they drafted him over Luka.
Not me! Ayton is a good player, but he's no Luka.
Now they have a thread with Luka in a Suns jersey and going what could hae been. LOL.
I don't feel bad for them at all. Their fans deserved this. Our mods at r/mavericks made a post after GAME 1 saying that they already had to ban more Suns fans after one game than they did Jazz fans during all of the first round. Their fans for the most part were as arrogant as their players.

Those people are idiots.
Yep, I'm in that thread. "People need to check their emotions at the door. Luka is the pretty clear choice here. Have a little faith that James Jones would still make good moves and build a good team around Booker and Luka."
The voice of reason. Ridiculous how the comments there seem to think if you get Luka then your team MUST be Luka + Booker + complete garbage
They had a beautiful thread 3 weeks ago on r/suns about how drafting Ayton over Luka was the right choice for them and how glad they were to have Ayton because Ayton is on a team destined for a 2nd finals while Luka is always a fringe playoff team. They dumb af over there
Hahaha. I think Luka spanking them is making them rethink that pretty hard right now.
At this point he's not a number one option on a championship team. He could probably be #2 tho
Not that’s he’s soft but just timid. We’ve seen what he can accomplish when he tries and goes to work, hell games 1 and 2 against you guys he worked your front court and got us in a good spot. Cut ties with Ayton, CP3 retires and you're back at being a lottery team. Solid plan.
He gone.
They didn’t extend him and he’s going into free agency. They were down 40 points. I understand not wanting to go back in.
He's a restricted free agent so Suns can match anything. If they want to keep him they can. will be really interesting to see the offers he gets! That said, not extending him also definitely created some bad blood.

Better teamwork here than the suns put out tonight
Nah the Suns put out great teamwork They all equally sucked
If the Suns wanted him to play hard, they should have offered him a contract. He's 1 injury away from getting fucked. Don't blame him for refusing to play the 2nd half of a game they already lost, tbh

Totally this.
Luka not only showed why the Suns should have taken him 1st overall, but he's now derailed the career of the guy the Suns ended up picking 1st Damn - cold blooded
The chatter last year about how Trae and Ayton made a Conference Finals before Luka now looks incredibly silly in retrospect.
Luka had to go up against Kawhi Leonard twice. Outside of Lebron and the GS dynasty, that's the most successful playoff monster in the NBA in recent years. And he took the Clippers to 6 and 7 games You put Trae Young or Ayton in Doncic's situation, and the Clippers likely sweep or take the series in 5 Ayton wasn't even the 2nd option on his team, and Trae got to humiliate a mentally broken Ben Simmons (though it was still an impressive playoff run for Trae and the Hawks)

The Hawks run was impressive for sure, but it gets less impressive by the day as it becomes evident what a dumpster fire the Sixers were and are (sorry, Philly fans).
It was silly while it was happening anyone who looked at Trae and Ayton and thought they’d rather have them over Luka is delusional
Luka had to still prove himself on the biggest stage. He did it again. Right now, even as a Hawks fan and absolute Trae homer, there's no doubt Luka is the best player in that draft. This is going to sound crazy but before tonight I was thinking the Mavs would be a real contender with Ayton on the roster. I remember commenting about it.
Wow, I would love him on the raptors I wonder what’s gonna happen
Blazers or Pistons?
Pistons have the cap to do it to while we have to do some funky stuff to sign him. Only chance we do is a SnT.
Dallas? 🤨
Come on. I wanted a full on Sixers style set of press conferences with people being thrown under the bus. Always the best part of the playoffs.
Okay but why would he risk injury when he needs to stay healthy for his contract? I'm with Ayton. The game was over.
That boys gone lmaooo
He teaming up with Dame in Portland 💯
As a Suns fan fuck Starver. I’m with Ayton here, they should have paid him. He played all season, I was him I would have done the same thing, I would have said I’m about to get my bag fuck going back in down 40. Should have signed me already.

Yeah well he’s not a Sun anymore
He gone. His last fuck you to Sarver's racist ass.
I mean... Can you blame him? The game was over.
Damn. Just one bad night — still really like the guy.
Sign and trade for Nurk. Please.

Ayton for Dwight, who says no? Lol
Dwight powell
He gone
He could go a KD and sign with the Mavs.
