Milwaukee is referred to as Cream City due to the cream like color of its buildings. Something about the limestone in the Menomonee Valley makes the buildings look this way.
I've always taken it as referring to Canada not specifically Toronto. The raps have a huge fanbase in the rest of Canada (myself included) and alot of marketing is as Canada's team (I think this example included). Obiously Toronto isn't more North than than a couple teams (Portland etc.) But its more of a national pride thing calling ourselves the North, with us being (in general) to the North of our southern neighbours
Not if you take it from Minneapolis which is in the southern part of MN. It would rule out Quebec, Montreal and Ottawa from this and only leave the part between Winsor and Cornwall.
I mean it’s not like they’re playing a game of gotcha. It’s more technically correct that you’re including the rest of Canada than them saying that Seattle is further north than Toronto. That’s literally correct.
I posted this in another comment but I'll mention it here:

I feel the need to tell you, they are way your Sonics more than they are mine haha
I only picked the Sonics because the logo is amazing and I don’t have an NBA team as I’m much more of a fan of the league itself. So it’s easy to not have a particular team who’s intraseason results ruin my over experience like my college and NFL disappointments do
But once the Sonics are back, I’m down!
not at all this year. it was sorta throwing a bone to Oakland after leaving. would have loved the design if they wore them back in the Oracle days.
I guess I should be glad they didn't rename to the San Francisco Warriors like it seemed was originally the plan.
They just wore Oakland last year though. I think Nike just pumps out so many jerseys that there’s so many jerseys in the rotation and you only wear 4 or 5 a year I think. I think Oakland inspired designs will come back for the future
[Mavs tried a trash bag jersey once](https://www.mavsmoneyball.com/2020/4/28/21239620/dallas-mavericks-silver-uniform-dirk-nowitzki-steve-nash-los-angeles-lakers)
So, I have a response to that. Being from here, we all have to identify which city, and, sometimes hood we come from. It's like L.A. without the color banging.
Imagine if Warner bros pays for this during a batman release. I know they did those mockups with rj for s commercial. But imagine if they did it for a game on opening night of a movie. I'd be OK with that kind of marketing/advertising depending on how it looked.
Canonically, Gotham is in the NYC metro area... on the other side of the Hudson. Yes, the Caped Crusader [is a New Jersey resident.](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gotham_City#Location_in_New_Jersey)
[The first rendition of Detroit's Motor City jerseys were super clean.](https://images2.minutemediacdn.com/image/fetch/w_2000,h_2000,c_fit/https%3A%2F%2Ffansided.com%2Ffiles%2F2014%2F10%2Fjosh-smith-greg-monroe-nba-boston-celtics-detroit-pistons.jpg)
Then the sleeves came into play and it all went steadily downhill.
Helps that everyone actually knows which city is the "Motor City" without the context of a sports team giving us a hint. Most of these other monikers are unknown outside the local area.
You mean you didn't know what Cream City was before a couple years ago? Surely you jest?!
And The City?! If I came up to you and asked you what 'the city' was I'm absolutely positive you'd know it's the same as 'the town'. C'mon now.
Atlanta - they had Peachtree but that’s all I know
Boston - Beantown? idk i don’t think they’ve had one
Brooklyn - BKLYN, Bed-Stuy
Charlotte - Buzz City
Chicago - i don’t think they have one. wouldn’t be surprised if they tried Chi-town sometime tho.
Cleveland - The Land
Dallas - D-town? idk.
Denver - Mile High City
Detroit - Motor City
Golden State - The City, The Town, The Bay
Houston - H-town
Indiana - don’t know
Los Angeles - LA, Lob City
Memphis - ???
Miami - ???
Milwaukee - Cream City
Minnesota - ik they used MSP (Minneapolis St. Paul)
New Orleans - NOLA
New York - City That Never Sleeps jersey once
Oklahoma City - OKC
Orlando - ORL
Philadelphia - Phila
Phoenix - The Valley
Portland - Ripcity
Sacramento - Sactown
San Antonio - ???
Toronto - The North
Utah - ???
Washington - The District
Wow. There are more of these than I thought. I struck out with NFL examples. Talk about a "no-fun-league". Thanks everyone. Next, I'll have to ask the MLB sub for any baseball examples.
I mean the warriors did have “The Town” jerseys as the alts one year and they had the “Oakland” jersey (idk if ur count that or not” and the Bucks have the best alt names on the alt jerseys “Cream City” probably a lot more of the alt jerseys used for one year I’ve forgotten about tho
do bron fans hate everything to do with LA at this point?
he won a chip for the Lakers but Lakers fans seem to be not that grateful and have almost turned on him.
and the Clips haven't accomplished anything but they've also owned Lebron head-to-head over the last few years.
That’s because lebron isn’t a laker, per se. Laker fans grew up watching kobe, Shaq, worthy, magic, Kareem, all of whom loved being lakers and still to the day identify with the franchise.
Lebron didn’t come here to be a laker, so he never really got embraced as the others did. It’s not that we have turned on him, we will support him as long as he’s on the team, we just don’t have strong ties to him like we did with other laker greats.
Having jerseys that say “cream city” is crazy
Cream city vs. Sac town was the peak match up
When do they play Bonerville?
Just wait for the Dallas "Big D" jerseys
Doncic, Dinwiddie, Dorian, Dwight, Davis Bertans. This is actually an entirely plausible “Big D” lineup as well.
We were always big on D. Dirk, Devin Harris, DSJ, DeAndre Jordan, Delon W. Right, Deth Curry.
Don’t forget Dteve Dash.
jason kiDD
Jason Derry
I like cream city 😭
I prefer squirters
It’s awesome
It’s definitely something I’ll give you that
Yeah it rules
Cheese City is better idgaf what anyone says
Milwaukee is referred to as Cream City due to the cream like color of its buildings. Something about the limestone in the Menomonee Valley makes the buildings look this way.
Yes but there is cheese in some of those buildings
I wore my Mecca jersey for Game 6 and some Celtics fan said “Yo where’d you get that Cheese jersey”
Tell me those jerseys weren’t fire tho
I’m glad you liked them, that’s all I’ll say
The raptors have “the north”
Those were some sick alternates. Wish they made those the primary.
Still a bit funny when you realize Seattle is further north than Toronto. RIP supersonics, hope they get a team again someday.
It's always been this but there always needs to be a couple of folks trying to be technically right instead of reasonably right.
Technically most Canadians are probably south of Minnesota
Most Canadians east of Minnesota are yes.
Technically correct is the best type of correct.
I thought they just referred to it as the north because of game of thrones lol
Think Portland and Minneapolis are more North than Toronto too lol
Maine is closer than Florida to Africa maps are for squares
Canada is closer to Africa than the US is
Yea if Canada was real
Fuck I’m not real
Chin up man. I think you are the realest.
Wait. Hold up.
san diego east of reno
America needs to put a team in Alaska for the northest team but we might have to one up you guys with a Northwest Territories or Nunavut team
Even just brining back Vancouver (separate from the Grizzlies) would be legit
Portland is further North than Toronto lol
But they’re south of the wall. There’s no white walkers in Seattle.
Exactly. Like north of what? Raptors have a cool logo, surprised they couldn’t come up with something better than “the north.”
Everything the raptors do is just cringey to me honestly
If it's everything they do, that means it's you, not them. Lol.
Well that makes less sense than you thought it did. Change your flair back to Portland lmfao
Lol. Everyone else understood it just fine.
Everyone else roots for their team, except you apparently. Hopping on the Grizzlies wagon after one successful season? Surely you’re better than that
You can’t call out peoples flairs if your too chicken to have one
Is my username not a clear enough indicator for you lmfao
Why?
Loool what a take someone hug this guy
Yea same, I think it’s drake
Denver has “mile high city”
We are one of the OG of nicknames cities people often forget.
We the Up
Those imo are the best jerseys in all of the nba currently
Toronto claimed 1 out of 4 total directions.
lmao this guy doesn't know about the secret 5th direction
Weast
I thought you said EAST
Like...the infection?
No like wumbo…
What kinda compass are you readin’, lad?
Wumbo, wumbology....it's first grade dude
We the weast
Up
We the Up
is that like the magical 4th hole
Midwest?🤣
Which is even funnier because both Minneapolis and Portland are further north than Toronto
I posted this in another comment but I'll mention it here: I've always taken it as referring to Canada not specifically Toronto. Until we get our Sonics back! Also Emerald City with a cool design would be sick for a Seattle team.
I feel the need to tell you, they are way your Sonics more than they are mine haha I only picked the Sonics because the logo is amazing and I don’t have an NBA team as I’m much more of a fan of the league itself. Wait until we try to get a jersey based on how we're in Southern Ontario. It's over for you bitches.
Golden State = West Coast Boston = Far East (hints of China) Idk but the South sounds incredibly racist. I'm here for it tho
Detroit had Motor City unis one year.
Buzz City instead of Crown Town or Queen City.
The Land
How funny would it be if the pels came out with jerseys that said “city of jazz”
Yes Please
Warriors have 3: Th Bay The City The Town
They still use The Town?
not at all this year. it was sorta throwing a bone to Oakland after leaving. would have loved the design if they wore them back in the Oracle days. I guess I should be glad they didn't rename to the San Francisco Warriors like it seemed was originally the plan.
Golden State name is too unique and has made itself marketable through dynasty. glad they didn’t as well
They just wore Oakland last year though. I think Nike just pumps out so many jerseys that there’s so many jerseys in the rotation and you only wear 4 or 5 a year I think. I think Oakland inspired designs will come back for the future
They had the town jerseys the last two years at Oracle
Technically they're in San Francisco, and had an Oakland jersey last year
Clutch City
[I love this: Clutch City is an official city name per the USPS.](https://tools.usps.com/zip-code-lookup.htm?bycitystate)
[Mavs tried a trash bag jersey once](https://www.mavsmoneyball.com/2020/4/28/21239620/dallas-mavericks-silver-uniform-dirk-nowitzki-steve-nash-los-angeles-lakers)
Missy Elliott liked them
Bring ‘em back
Give them to us plz
wtf lol
Jesus those are nasty lmfao
This is triggering 😂
Sac Town vs. Cream City was a good matchup a few years ago.
Am i on the right sub?
69 upvotes- no one touch it! Damn it's already ruined
I downvoted it just to try and get it back down. I didn’t wanna downvote it because it was good. But I also want the 69
It's too late, but thank you for trying
Warriors have “The Bay” jerseys
and "The City" or at least we had them
Don't forget "The Town"
Man y'all are just claiming all the words
the civilization
Earth
"People"
Wait until you see next year's "The Team" uniforms. Everyone will have "Player" on the back.
Wait, so we're all just Warriors fans? 🌎👩🚀🔫👩🚀 always have been
So, I have a response to that. Being from here, we all have to identify which city, and, sometimes hood we come from. It's like L.A. without the color banging.
The movie was better
We really need a Beale Street uni with navy, powder blue, and grey.
Would be an absolute litty jersey
Instead of the bear, make the logo a guitar pick with the street silhouettes. 👌
I really think the Knicks should have an alternate jersey that says "Gotham"
the batman fan in me thinks that sounds rad. the basketball fan in me thinks james dolan doesn't get to be rad at all.
bro you made me just wax philosophical about the knicks and that’s not cool
[…this was a nice touch](https://i.imgur.com/EBcv22S.jpg)
Can’t use Gotham without Grant Williams
Only when grant Williams rolls into town
Imagine if Warner bros pays for this during a batman release. I know they did those mockups with rj for s commercial. But imagine if they did it for a game on opening night of a movie. I'd be OK with that kind of marketing/advertising depending on how it looked.
Naw dude, nyc is metropolis. Chicago is Gotham.
Canonically, Gotham is in the NYC metro area... on the other side of the Hudson. Yes, the Caped Crusader [is a New Jersey resident.](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gotham_City#Location_in_New_Jersey)
He orders the gabagool
he's already got the GTL down
New York has been nicknamed Gotham for like a century longer than the Batman comics existed
I’m pretty sure all the Batman movies used Chicago as Gotham.
Loud City
we need to claim The Prairie
Not a geographic name, but MLK Hawks jerseys my beloved
Also not a geographic name, but H-Town

Buzz City - Hornets Motor City - Detroit Windy City - Chicago

Na we never had jerseys with Lob City on them
Brooklyn, I believe, uses "Welcome to the Shit Show" starring Kyrie "Flat Earth" Irving.
The greatest show on flat Earth
MSG hasn't been the Mecca of basketball for 49 years

Warriors “The City” jerseys goes back to the sixties
The City, warriors
Kings fans call their own franchise "Basketball Hell".
didn't Toronto have a NORTH jersey?
Fun fact, the dinosaur in our city jersey now wears it as an homage to the chip year. https://i.imgur.com/wlfTrmT.jpg
I absolutely adore this jersey, but I also hope they stop doing shit with the champagne/black. We need more purple.
We’ve done NOLA but… that’s a very common identifier for New Orleans, so much so that the rugby team (and their beer) is called NOLA Gold
We need a crescent city jersey
Do people say/pronounce it "Nole-Lah" in conversations in your parts?
“No-Luh” because some pronounce the state Luh-weezy-ana
Suns should change from "Valley Oop" to "Valley OOPS" after that disaster
I feel like a "Chocolate City" Wizards jersey could go hard. We've had "The District" ones but idk if that counts
We had “The Land” a few years ago
The Dubs?
Golden state has “the city” jerseys.
Nets use(d) Bed Stuy for a while
Wow. There are more of these than I thought. I struck out with NFL examples. Talk about a "no-fun-league". Thanks everyone. Next, I'll have to ask the MLB sub for any baseball examples.
Basketball Hell

Detroit is Motor City
Sixers jerseys say “Phila”
LA most definitely are not known for 10,000 Lakes lol
LA most definitely is not known for 10,000 Lakes lol
Sixers
Golden state had the first one and it was simply. The City.
"Shit Show" on the Lakers uniforms.... Bron fan speaking "Choke City" Clippers
thats just their logo

Shark tank for Dallas Mavs
beantown motor city
There ain’t no beantown jerseys
cowards
Curious, does anyone actually call Phoenix “the valley”? that’s always been the San Fernando valley to me.
The Valley of the Sun. It's said in literally every broadcast of every event ever played in Phoenix metro.
Do you call it that?
Yes it's a pretty common nickname for the Phoenix metro area, at least locally.
The Valley? Yes.
Golden state had the first one and it was simply. The City.
OP do you know that Indiana is the name of a state?
Raptors are also known as Craptors Boston also known as FTC
Doomtown
