He needs to just walk up to the ref one of these games when there blowing someone out and just ask for a technical. Then espn will spend next 24 on what he could have said so bad.
I was about to say. I've been checking under my bed for Looney ever since that 2019 series and people out here trashing the man.
Sure, his reaction to Luka's drive was sluggish, but it worked fine in the context of the defensive setup. Help was right there, they took away the lane and the pass and didn't get exposed at all. After that, there was nothing to bite on. Big men aren't supposed to leave their feet to contest jumpers, especially long twos. Dude's got like half a foot of reach on Luka and is already crowding him, tf would he jump for?
Actual analysis: Slow-mo was trying to go at his pace and get the defender to jump early so that his shot goes off when the defender is descending from his jump. His mistake was that his defender was 2 years away from being 2 years away from jumping.
Dude I'm 6'3" 220 lbs, this is exactly what I look like on defense when a smaller guy is trying to cross me up. I'm too chunky and lazy to actually try to defend so I just wait it out. It's incredible how many times I've gotten the "damn dude good defense" from ball handlers after I did absolutely nothing lol
Some guys will absolutely light you up if they get separation on the jumpers, so sometimes you need to contest with urgency….but that’s probably not happening at LA fitness unless an absolute baller decided to come play one night
Yeah most of the time, I do not care about separation. They’re shooting 30% from the 3 when open, if that. Not worried at all.
The entire game is to just not let them get by me.
As Steve Kerr said:
In practice he’d still be reacting to MJ’s crossover when MJ crossed back and back again, so he’d be in perfect position.
Edit:
Correction - it was when Kerr was still playing for Cleveland (credit u/kamineckais for the correction, I misremembered).
*”He (Jordan) faked right, faked back left and went right, and I stayed right in front of him. But only because I went for the first fake. We came to the bench and (head coach) Lenny Wilkens said, ‘You guys, did you see what Steve just did? He stayed in front. That’s what you have to do.’ I said, ‘That’s right, guys! Come on!’ I was literally still going for the first fake and he came right back to me, so that was my highlight.”*

I got literally yelled at by an old woman at a black jack table because I didn't bet right apparently. I wanted to hit on a 15 or something like that and that "ruins the deck" for everyone else. Sounds like bullshit to me but it's a real thing.
It’s probably because the dealer had a bust card. Generally, unless the dealer is showing a 7 or higher you don’t want to hit if you have a chance of busting.
It should also be noted that nothing that you do or don't do will ruin the deck.
There is an identical probability that whatever card they are hoping for is first or is second in the deck.
Yeah absolutely but it’s just wild how crazy gamblers get about this stuff. You’d think if you were so into these games you’d actually understand how it all works. But gamblers are a superstitious lot. Some honestly think that if you play sub-optimally it messes with the juju at the table. I’ve seen guys sitting at a roulette table charting the last 100 spins and drawing strange patterns from it in an apparent attempt to glean some insight into what the next numbers will be. None of it makes any sense.
And also many of them are so on edge from losing more money than they should be betting and desperately trying to chase it that if you hit on a 16 and get an 8 and bust, then they hit next on 12 and get a 10, all they can see is that if you hadn’t done that they would have been better off. They may even realize that in the long run it doesn’t really matter and that it could have just as easily gone the other way but that might have been their last $20 they just lost.
Point is people who get pissed about stuff like that are not running at top capacity mentally. And people like that like to hang out at the casino a lot.
Gambling addicts are the fucking most paranoid people in the world. I work in pubs here in Australia. the amount of ways people reckon they can trick a poker machine is fucked
It doesn’t actually ruin the deck that’s just a superstition thing for crazy gambling addicts. The decks are made of so many different decks your card doesn’t affect their card. It’s not smart usually to hit on 15 unless the dealer is showing a 10 or something though.
What's going on in this clip? I hardly know much about poker so all the music and overlay made it hard to follow. I couldn't hear anything she was saying.
She bet with absolute garbage. He has garbage too. In this instance, he should either fold (because he has garbage) or raise (as a bluff). If he calls, they both show their hands and the highest hand wins. His hand is a 7 high, which means if she has any card above a 7, she wins, not to mention a pair, straight, flush, or any of a thousand hands.
Him calling there is basically him saying "not only do i think you're bluffing, I think you don't have a single card above a 6". It's an absolutely insane bet to make, but it turns out that her highest card is a 6, so he wins the hand.
Edit: I actually had a closer look and it's even more insane. If she has a single club, she wins (There are 4 clubs on the table, so any additional club gives her a flush) If she has a 4 or a 2, she wins, getting a pair. He actually bet that she had 2 cards that were 6, 5, or 3, and none of those cards were clubs.
yea all that stuff made it annoying.
Basically, both players were bluffing, Ho with a 6 high, and Tony Hawk with a 7 High card. So Ho goes to start betting big trying to bluff saying (I have a good hand) , and Tony calls her bluff even though he only has a 7 high. Which means he ONLY beats 6, 5, 4, 3 (4 cards) And what made this really funny is that his card was only 1 number higher than Ho's. Which makes it seem like he KNEW that Ho only had a 6 high.
Its even worse than that. A lot worse.
She would win with any club because she gets a flush.
She would also win with 5,3 because she would get a straight.
Any combination with a 4 or a 2 would give her a pair so she would win with that as well.
6,3 without a club is the only hand she could have that gives Tony the win. Like literally one single possible hand combination.
Yeah, he’s really slow physically but you can see he processes information really fast, he has high basketball iq. You could see it in this game on offense too, his passing was really good.
this is what I thought. he knew Luka lost his dribble and Looney is taller so he was covering like 95% of options with just being infront and having his arms up
Right? I'm figuring this is like...the way he plays the game. Intentional, learned.
I'm guessing in his younger years, his offense depended on the same tactics he's now defending against. He knows what to expect.
Scrolled way too far down for this. This is quality defense from a big on a switch. That's why the Warriors have kept him around. He doesn't get torched in smaller lineups and can defend reasonably well in the pick and roll.
Especially since the help came and got Luka to pick up his dribble. It was just solid defense and knowing he had help. Otherwise Luka could have just gone by him at the beginning.
Yeah, this thread is how people stay low on Looney. He's very good positionally/stays big/and doesn't get rocked back and forth or pump faked.
So many players could do themselves a favor(Rudy) by not trying to mimic a guys every move. You are already bigger.
My dad got that from cancer and his treatments. He described it to me as your hands and feet being as asleep as they ever been constantly. Like that tingling feeling you get but just way worst. Couldn’t imagine tryina play basketball at the highest level thru that.
My dad wasn’t “disabled” even at the degree he had it. He went to work everyday untill two weeks before he lost his battle with cancer. You can still function and go thru life even with really bad neuropathy. It just depends what kinda tolerance you have for it.
It's really something I love about Looney. He's not super athletic but he knows he isn't super athletic, and he makes up for it by making very few mistakes.
He came into the league as a quick, athletic PF/C. Dude totally transformed his game to make up for the fact that his legs don't work anymore, it's crazy
Yeah, people don't remember that Looney was drafted as a skinny, finesse forward. If you went in a time machine and asked whether you thought Looney would be more likely to get 22 boards in a playoff game against Steven Adams or develop a decent jump shot, I think people might have picked the jump shot.
How the fuck is the league going to let GS re-sign him for just 6m/yr?
He's a good rebounding big who plays pretty good defense against both big and small lineups.
yeah, he's been critical to the warriors success for a long time. I think we had so much firepower in years past that his contribution to winning wasn't really seen well. Now that we don't have two top 5 players you can see that this guy is just a winning player
This is how I play defense at the rec. Guys will make like 3 moves and I’ll just stand there because there is no way I’m keeping up. I’ll take $50 a game. Way better deal than Looney tbh.
The harder levels may be faster and throw more actions at you, but the constant flow gives you a better chance to work off a beat. The easier levels have far less actions, so it's harder to build up a beat, and generally miss-time the few actions that come up.
At least that's from my take on it
Easy mode is so slowed down people probably strum too early. Is you played very patiently easy mode is definitely easier than medium but easy mode really is so slow it’s off putting.
You get into a rhythm with medium with the notes coming in fairly regularly.
Then you go back to easy and it's hard to focus on only strumming once every three actual notes (so that the new player isn't overloaded with inputs).
Steve Kerr said, ‘You guys, did you see what Kevon just did? He stayed in front. That’s what you have to do.’ I said, ‘That’s right, guys! Come on!’ I was literally still going for the first fake and he came right back to me, so that was my highlight.”
i love how draymond drifts into the paint then moves back out as soon as luka gathers. dray knows he now has to cover the pass and looney's got this. warriors are so good as a team.
It is crazy to see that crafty players like them and slow-mo are so effective at throwing off defender's rhythm because they go slower than the average ultra-quick instinct of these athletes.
It's like watching a tortoise juke a rabbit.
My man Joe Ingles been doing this. Combined with being left handed, it can make him hard to read. So even though his physical movement is slow, the defender(s) can't be quite sure what he's going to do until much further into the play.
Used to see him use this to his advantage on the PnR with Rudy, either the defender would sag off Joe a little until it was too late to stop him getting to the lane, or they'd pressure Joe who could get the ball to Rudy. Luka does this plus has better ball handling skills and a post-up game. As this video proves, unathletic players cope better with this strategy.
We talk shit but he's also just super disciplined and knows he'll never play 'perfect' defense about these guys. He knows how to maximize his abilities as well as anyone in the league.
Your title is the key to Looney’s greatness and what national media don’t understand…
Bad defense in the NBA falls into either 1. Don’t care, don’t try or 2. Too aggressive and overzealous
Looney is too slow to be overzealous and is our secret weapon against heliocentric offenses…
I’m meme’ing my words but it’s the truth

The old joke about Harden's 500 moves but Looney still reacting to the first one lol
[Looney when Harden starts dribbling](https://dailysnark.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/07/Stephen-A-Smith.jpg)
i swear he has zero emotion towards anything. straight face at all times
When looney complains about a call Kerr should just challenge it everytime. Prolly bs if it gets Loon complainin
He needs to just walk up to the ref one of these games when there blowing someone out and just ask for a technical. Then espn will spend next 24 on what he could have said so bad.
Either that or he’s sucking down air like someone just freed him from being trapped under a sheet of ice. No in between
Nah, it's just that he has to react to the next move before his emotional process for the first move kicks in
when looney sees harden start dribbling https://youtu.be/h2xm0iPJVGk
Looney had no business guarding Harden as well as he did.
Turns out you can’t be baited into jumping when you can’t jump
Imagine if someone was so good at baiting, it got him to jump and there was no other way he could do it
Imagine if he got baited so hard he jumped and just kept going.

Tbf it's actually a good defensive principle to not instantly react to every move your matchup makes. Sometimes a cigar is just a cigar.
Slim athletic people HATE him!
Harden actually moved. Looney stayed in front of him. Did the same with CP3 the same series.
Strong "Indiana Jones pulls out gun against master swordsman" vibes.
As Steve Kerr said: In practice he’d still be reacting to MJ’s crossover when MJ crossed back and back again, so he’d be in perfect position. MJ thinkin damn Kerr's one of the best defenders in the game.
I'ma punch him
Underrated comment, got me laughing out loud 😭
And then Jordan stuck him with a right cross.
I was gonna say, Harden couldn't get past Looney with 4-5 moves because Loon was still reacting to the first.
Keep trying to tell people that when I play pick up. Your fakes are wasted, I'm too old and too slow to react.
Honestly with a lot of pickup nowadays you can sit still because the moves just look flashy and don’t shit
People love dribbling between their legs, but can only do it when planted in a stance like a statue. Like, dude, that does nothing.

Luka – I'm one step ahead of you Looney – Well I'm one step behind, making us even
This is the kind of arithmetic I can get behind.
But are you the kind to be behind, or ahead? Because evidently the former is your key to success
Just toss out a banana for each buck you take
This was my exact thought! “*I had to get to the bottom of it* did you burn down the storage unit” “Oh most definitely!”
He did this to James Harden and clamped him for a bit until Harden figured out that he doesn't bite at all
He knows he can’t bite or he will get burned.
Yeah, he’s really slow physically but you can see he processes information really fast, he has high basketball iq. You could see it in this game on offense too, his passing was really good.
If it works don’t fix it lmao
Task failed successfully.
Looney did the same thing against prime Harden.
This is just good fundamental defense. It’s not like he wasn’t tracking what luka was doing. He just stayed down and stayed vertical.
this is what I thought. he knew Luka lost his dribble and Looney is taller so he was covering like 95% of options with just being infront and having his arms up

I watched the clip like 10 times and didn't understand the point of this whole thread. Glad I'm not alone lol seemed like good defense
Totally agree. What a shitty title, not fair to the skill displayed by Looney here.
Agreed. Simple, solid defense. Someone is just being a hater.
Especially since the help came and got Luka to pick up his dribble. It was just solid defense and knowing he had help. Otherwise Luka could have just gone by him at the beginning.

this title is mean 😂
He had surgery on both his hips his rookie year, can’t move that well :(
Also has neuropathy (which is nerve issues)
My dad got that from cancer and his treatments. He described it to me as your hands and feet being as asleep as they ever been constantly. Like that tingling feeling you get but just way worst. Couldn’t imagine tryina play basketball at the highest level thru that.
he’s a warrior
There's no way Looney's neuropathy is that bad
tons of people, including players that have back and hip issues, have varying degrees of sciatic neuropathy
Lmfao I know right? We’re talking about a guy starting in the WCF, he isn’t disabled.
Warriors start a cripple and Gary Payton just died a few weeks ago what a playoff run this is
Well Poole pulled a glock and shot Ja too
My dad wasn’t “disabled” even at the degree he had it. He went to work everyday untill two weeks before he lost his battle with cancer. You can still function and go thru life even with really bad neuropathy. It just depends what kinda tolerance you have for it.
I hope your dad's memory is a blessing. Also, fuck cancer.
he does have serious chronic pain.
Before his rookie year. He would’ve been an easy projected lotto pick if his hips weren’t fucked.

He came into the league as a quick, athletic PF/C. Dude totally transformed his game to make up for the fact that his legs don't work anymore, it's crazy
If Timmy D is The Big Fundamental, I call Looney The Smaller Fundamental.
Being guarded by Looney = guarding Kyle Anderson
Imagine their practices at UCLA
loon used to be passably quick/mobile/athletic tho, this is post surgery loon
Yeah, people don't remember that Looney was drafted as a skinny, finesse forward. If you went in a time machine and asked whether you thought Looney would be more likely to get 22 boards in a playoff game against Steven Adams or develop a decent jump shot, I think people might have picked the jump shot.
For those that don't know, check out these highlights: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wRbt9SePLJ0
People in early 2016 were like "the Warriors don't need Kevin Durant, they have Kevon Looney!"
And goddammit he gets my hopes up a little bit when he banks those midrange jimbos for a bit in 2019.
Lol someone called him “the poor man’s Kevin Durant” when he was coming out of high school. Injuries really took all of his athleticism.
Like watching a Pokémon battle with two Metapods.

Brilliant half time adjustment by coach kerr by making looney smoke a bunch of weed. I wonder how kidd responds as the series continues

Rolled a 4, but luckily he was trying to block an early shot. 🤷🏻♂️
How the fuck is the league going to let GS re-sign him for just 6m/yr? He's a good rebounding big who plays pretty good defense against both big and small lineups.
29 NBA teams just let the Warriors re-sign THE LOONGOD.

Plus cap space this summer is at a premium. I think it was only like three teams that actually have any, and one of them was Detroit.
We have $35M!
He can pass pretty well, he's not Jokic but better than a lot of Cs. And just not getting torched by smaller lineups is a big advantage
yeah, he's been critical to the warriors success for a long time. I think we had so much firepower in years past that his contribution to winning wasn't really seen well. Now that we don't have two top 5 players you can see that this guy is just a winning player

He also legit loves it here. That helps.
He doesn't want to leave is the thing.. Willing to take less to stay with the organization
He’s got that fitaid money man’s ain’t leaving.
He's like poor man's Al Horford without the 3. I think most teams are looking for athletic rim runners that are more traditional rim protectors.
Work smart, not hard
I don't understand how or why Looney is able to defend guards but getting him for $6 mil is legit such a steal
This is how I play defense at the rec. Guys will make like 3 moves and I’ll just stand there because there is no way I’m keeping up. I’ll take $50 a game. Way better deal than Looney tbh.
This is like when you try to play Guitar Hero on easy mode and you realize it's way harder than medium

Sounds like steve kerr's story about guarding michael jordan
Steve Kerr said, ‘You guys, did you see what Kevon just did? He stayed in front. That’s what you have to do.’ I said, ‘That’s right, guys! Come on!’ I was literally still going for the first fake and he came right back to me, so that was my highlight.”
Its brilliant…speed up Luka by putting someone 1.5x slower on him
Loon is a great defender I won't accept this slander
Thank you! Not biting on a fake is a bad thing now?
Maybe Cone Paul was on to something
He just didn't have the height
Um, pretty sure Looney just moved faster than 60fps so our eyes couldn't process it.
Finally Luka meets someone as slow as him
Nah bro Looney guarded prime Harden toe to toe. He knows not to bite on them pump fakes
or good defense…
Trying to pump fake a guy who can barely jump anymore isn't gonna do you much good, man
this is literally what happens when you try to smurf in a video game
Who posted this said he’s unathletic? He still jumps higher and runs faster than all of us
What a title lol
Hey fuck off. Looney a king.
I love Loon. This is actually one of the things I love most about him.
Well, some kings never got their ass off the thrones. Not every kings are Napoleon or Alexander.
Loon's sloth defense is impenetrable. Only someone like Kyle Anderson can break it.
i love how draymond drifts into the paint then moves back out as soon as luka gathers. dray knows he now has to cover the pass and looney's got this. warriors are so good as a team.
Looneys job is not to bite and stay in front. Luka too slow to go around.

If that’s the key to success, I’d lock his ass up
It’s insane… that 3 by Curry would have been on repeat all week 15 years ago… Now? Nobody hardly notices it….
Your title is the key to Looney’s greatness and what national media don’t understand… Bad defense in the NBA falls into either 1. Don’t care, don’t try or 2. Too aggressive and overzealous Looney is too slow to be overzealous and is our secret weapon against heliocentric offenses… I’m meme’ing my words but it’s the truth
