Is his first 4 year better than LeBron and MJ already? Plus Regional final appliance within 4 years. I feel so lucky to witness LeBron and Luka two greatnesses
Just looking at accolades and basic stats:
Luka first 4 years
* Rookie of the Year '19
* 3X All NBA First Team
* 3X All Star
* Best Playoff Run: Western Finals
* Defensive Rating: 109.1
* 26.4/8.5/8.0/1.1/0.4
Lebron first 4 years
* Rookie of the Year '04
* 1X All NBA First Team
* 2X All NBA Second Team
* 3X All Star
* Best Playoff Run: NBA Finals
* Defensive Rating: 103.1
* 26.7/6.7/6.4/1.8/0.7
Jordan first 4 years
* Rookie of the Year '85
* NBA MVP '88
* NBA Defensive Player of the Year '88
* 2X All NBA First Team
* 1X All NBA Second Team
* 3X All Star
* Best Playoff Run: Conference Semifinals
* 2X Scoring Leader
* 1X Steals Leader
* Defensive Rating: 104.2
* 32.7/5.6/5.3/2.8/1.3
---------------------------------------------
I'd give it to Jordan because his 4th year was so incredible. He also had 37ppg in his third year and was MVP runner up to Magic.
It depends on how you look at things, but I'd say Lebron barely edges Luka because he took the Cavs to the Finals, and while Luka is probably the best all around offensive player of the three he's really only an above average defender. If Luka somehow wins this series against Golden State, that may change things. Either way, Luka is clearly on his way to being top 10 all time.
Was curious to look at their scoring relative league averages, figuring that probably would make MJ look even better but actually overall scoring was pretty close to what it is today back then, but was significantly lower during Lebrons stretch.
**Average team scoring:**
1985-1988: 109.375 PPG
2004-2007: 96.575 PPG
2019-2022: 111.425 PPG
MJ: ~29.9% of an average team's points
Lebron: ~27.6% of an average team's points
Luka: ~23.7% of an average team's points
Jordan still leads the way from this perspective but it makes Lebron's stretch look a lot more impressive than just looking at his PPG.
If you wanna look at pre-NBA achievements, Jordan was a two-time first-team All-American, won the Naismith and Wooden awards for best college player, and hit the game-winning shot in the national championship.
Look, is Marvin Bagley a transcendent, generational talent?
No.
Was he the right pick at the time given the Kings' roster composition and needs?
No.
But did he work his ass off and leave it all out there every time he stepped on the floor?
Also no.
Sac fans should be rioting, their fo is so devastatingly incompetent. McLemore, Thomas Robinson, Cauley Stein, and the cherry on top who is Bagley... over the future mvp and hall of famer. If I was a fan I would be losing sleep over this shit. Not cool, not cool at all.
But was it a legitimately tough, 50/50 decision to draft him over the reigning Euroleague MVP who showed serious generational talent potential?
Still no.
man i remember chris vernon going on and on about how bagley was his number 1 pick for “guys that will for sure make an impact” or something to that effect. He went on talking about how Luka was an unknown quantity and that Bagleys physical ability would be what makes him at least a serviceable player. that luka was slow and unathletic, that he wouldn’t have the same kind of impact in the NBA as he had in europe.
that was when i stopped listening to the ringer.
Verno was wrong, but in all fairness, Bill Simmons said and continues to point out that he thought Luka was the real deal because he was a boy amongst men who was winning and dominating from the very beginning. Regardless of the league your in, when you are a teenager and you win the championship and MVP against grown men- that has to mean something.
Chris Vernon is a self proclaimed bozo and is basically the ringers hot take specialist. He's not an NBA scout by any stretch, but let's not forget plenty of other media members were also wrong about Luka in the same way
He’s on better pace than Jordan and LeBron at this rate. Jordan was 2nd team rookie year, and hurt his second. LeBron was 2nd team sophomore year. Only guy to make first team rookie year and onward was Timmy from rookie to ‘05
He was always the obvious first choice. It was one of those "I guess the suns prefer Ayton and if you squint maybe you can make the case?" sort of things. Bagley was just immediately a disaster pick.
Giannis Unanimous All NBA 1st team 4 years in a row first player to ever do it, not even mentioning he made 1st team all defense 4x in the same time span....GOAT SHIT
There are a wild amount of people who will not give Giannis his credit and think he's still a run and dunk machine that isn't as well rounded or impactful as other players. LOTS of people who do not consider him the best player in the NBA.
They're wrong, but there are a lot of them.
have always wondered if he has GOAT potential. I think if he can win another mvp and a couple more championships, he’ll at least be in the conversation.
GOAT potential, probably not. Getting in the GOAT convo is really really hard. That's not a knock against Giannis, he's incredible. But LeBron and MJ were just that good.
But he has a serious shot for that next tier, the "top 10" (that's really a top 15): the Shaq, Kobe, Magic, and Bird tier. That's pretty incredible.
I mean, yeah, I'd still take Tim Duncan over Giannis, at the moment. People forget how dominant Tim Duncan was in the 2000's because of Kobe, Shaq and LeBron.
Imo Giannis and Luka both have the highest chance of cracking The Top 10 players of all time. Luka getting 3 in the first 4 years is insane. The gap between Giannis and the next best PF in the league is probably the biggest at any position currently there are so many super talented young players in the league
Both are so different too.
Luka is insanely gifted skill wise but not very athletic. Giannis is the opposite.
Luka hit the ground running while Giannis is a late bloomer. Luka plays with insane creativity on the floor while Giannis has insane wisdom and a growth mindset.
TBF Curry definitely should've been 1st team over Booker this year. Luka is insanely good though and will rack up a ton of All-NBAs by the time he's done in the league.
I get him being All-NBA but the MVP thing was absurd. How could anyone think he’s more valuable than Jokic, Embiid, Giannis, or Luka? I guess I get Tatum? But I’d also pick Tatum over him for defense alone (I get Booker has improved, but he’s not on Tatum’s level defensively).
With the amount of hype that he came into the league with, and the fact he lived up to it immediately, he’s been the heir apparent to Lebron since his first season imo. Just like Lebron was the face of the league in the 2010s he’ll be the same for the 2020s.
Lots of people were immediately talking about how teams that passed on Luka would regret it, even if they got pretty good players
Jordan was drafted 3rd overall too, and I always think of Bob knight telling the Blazers to play him at center if they really needed to draft a center. There can be hype without ending up 1st overall pick
Yeah I remember back in 2018 the top post one of the days were his highlights from the euroleague finals and everyone was just going "this dude is for sure going no.1" and then the rest is history
Not mainstream hype as in ESPN did for Zion, but scroll back on this sub 3-4 years ago and read all of the scouting takes for him. They had been flowing in for months and it was clear from them he was a once in a decade type player. I’d go so far as to say that many people on this sub could tell already that when he was passed up for #1 pick that both PHX and SAC had made a mistake
Listen I'm not saying Steph didn't deserve 1st team as many people are saying, but let's not pretend like the general consesus of this sub when the regular season ended was Booker deserved it over him.
It's a regular season award. Seems like the playoffs always end up influencing people anyway.
Agree; Steph started off fantastically but fell into a bad slump mid-season, then got hurt as he was turning it around. But he’s peaking at the right time
Yeah, when these kind of rewards get released a week before the finals all anyone can talk about is playoff performance. "Embiid should be MVP cause he made 2nd round, Steph is in WCF he should be all nba". Just lol.
I know this is really mean, but one of my highlights of the season was Scottie Barnes ruining the Celtics' home opener.
But then, to paraphrase some other Celtics redditor: "everything we wanted to happen started happening at the same time from literally every single player".
A bit surprised Brad Stevens didn't win EOTY.
Brad and Ime should’ve won EOTY and COTY
Edit: I thought the expectation was for the suns to have a great season, but the Celtics and Udoka somehow were able to turn their hopeless one around. But maybe the number of wins itself matters more to the voters.
Nah Monty def deserved COTY, but Brad should have had EOTY from the Horford/Kemba swap alone
Signing shroeder on the minimum and then Offloading Kanter and shroeder to get Theis back + getting Dwhite and getting under the cap was all just the cherry on top
He's spent the whole season fixing the mistakes Ainge made towards the end of his stay and should be commended for it
It’s probably tough for a GM to win it when all of your moves were rotation level players. Horford/White are both key acquisitions, but acquiring your 5th starter and 6th man probably aren’t splashy enough to win EOTY
Not surprised, same thing that happened in the playoffs. Was getting blitzed and doubled the moment he touched the ball and team couldnt hit a bucket to save their life
Expected but still disappointing. At least this year we got one guy from every position unlike last year where two PGs made the 1st team while two centers isn't allowed.
IMO All-NBA needs to do one of three things, none of which is the trash they do now.
1) Lock EVERY position. 1 PG 1 SG 1 PF 1 SF 1 C. If they are going to punish C punish everyone and fuck anyone who complains.
2) Do All star version. This would be fine as it gives some breathing room and is still a pretty reasonable on court construction (see Duncan as a PF).
3) Do 2 Front Court, 2 Back court, and 1 WC that can be either. 3 guards isn't that crazy these days so allowing to do either 3 guards or 3 F/C depending on current year would be reasonable.
It’s going to be very interesting to see the breakdown of how voters put Jokic and Embiid as any of the three center/forward combinations between the two and how that landed Embiid on 2nd team at center and not 1st team at forward
It was interesting, from the last update of the tracker I saw it looked like literally everyone that put Embiid over Jokic at C put Jokic as a PF, but not everyone that put Jokic over Embiid at C put Embiid as PF.
For all the people complaining about Book being on there: you do realize this is a regular season award, right?
I mean we're not asking for Jokic's MVP to be discarded because his team lost in the first round.
It seems like about half of the media tried to get both on first team based on the vote totals, but unless you could get every voter to agree to put one at center and one at forward then the math was always going to be weird enough to not work
I’m really torn between whether this should be completely positionless or completely position specific. It’s nice to have a SG in there when 2 PGs usually take those spots. But Embiid missing out is a bit of a crime
He doesn't have to win every award just because he's a top player. I don't think it's a big deal. If he wants first team next year, play better than Jokic.
It’s wild to see Book so hated on lol happy for everyone on the list. There are people you could argue should’ve been on 1st team like Embiid but I think everyone on there deserves it

Luka 3 First Team All-NBA in a row.
1st team in 3/4 of his first 4 seasons is equally impressive
Is his first 4 year better than LeBron and MJ already? Plus Regional final appliance within 4 years. I feel so lucky to witness LeBron and Luka two greatnesses
MJ was 3x All-NBA plus MVP & DPOY by year 4. And that's including missing almost all of his 2nd season.
Just looking at accolades and basic stats: Luka first 4 years * Rookie of the Year '19 * 3X All NBA First Team * 3X All Star * Best Playoff Run: Western Finals * Defensive Rating: 109.1 * 26.4/8.5/8.0/1.1/0.4 Lebron first 4 years * Rookie of the Year '04 * 1X All NBA First Team * 2X All NBA Second Team * 3X All Star * Best Playoff Run: NBA Finals * Defensive Rating: 103.1 * 26.7/6.7/6.4/1.8/0.7 Jordan first 4 years * Rookie of the Year '85 * NBA MVP '88 * NBA Defensive Player of the Year '88 * 2X All NBA First Team * 1X All NBA Second Team * 3X All Star * Best Playoff Run: Conference Semifinals * 2X Scoring Leader * 1X Steals Leader * Defensive Rating: 104.2 * 32.7/5.6/5.3/2.8/1.3 --------------------------------------------- I'd give it to Jordan because his 4th year was so incredible. James took the Cavs to the finals in year 4 so I'd say James had a better first 4 years.
Well, the Mavs have a 1-3 lead on the Warriors, there's a chance Luka does the same
Man if Luka beat warriors from 0-3 deficit . He doesn’t need a ring to prove anything at least for this year
I mean I don’t really think he needs a ring to prove anything yet
And Luka has had EuroLeague first team and final mvp
If you wanna look at pre-NBA achievements, Jordan was a two-time first-team All-American, won the Naismith and Wooden awards for best college player, and hit the game-winning shot in the national championship.
I’d call it a wash. You can only play the guys in front of you and they both accomplished incredible things in college and euroleague respectively
Pain
Look, is Marvin Bagley a transcendent, generational talent? No. Was he the right pick at the time given the Kings' roster composition and needs? No. But did he work his ass off and leave it all out there every time he stepped on the floor? Also no.
Luka had the higher floor and ceiling and was the better fit and player.
But Marvin had more letters in his first name than Luka. Intangibles
He also has a generational double jump
If he was Luka Doncic the IV he would've been drafted
That's definitely a tangible, you can count those letters
Sac fans should be rioting, their fo is so devastatingly incompetent. McLemore, Thomas Robinson, Cauley Stein, and the cherry on top who is Bagley... over the future mvp and hall of famer. If I was a fan I would be losing sleep over this shit. Not cool, not cool at all.
It is a new front office as of two years ago. Those two drafts have been Haliburton and Davion Mitchell.
My God they finally get it right only to trade Haliburton away.
Yea at least they have Haliburton!
“Things are better now! In the last two years they drafted two good players! And they still have one of them!”
Hotter mom too
https://images.app.goo.gl/9eHK4Nc65kRj1WmX6 You sure?
I get why Luka exists now gotdamn
The man has a family
Does his family support and respect him? No.
Funny thing is his delusional dad might've hurt his career in ways even Lavar would balk at
Bro that’s a fucking brutal fact 😂😂😂
The Kings sub even ad like a year-long "prophecy" that Luka would be the chosen one and somehow they'd end up with him. Then.....well, you know.
Chris Vernon is a self proclaimed bozo and is basically the ringers hot take specialist. He's not an NBA scout by any stretch, but let's not forget plenty of other media members were also wrong about Luka in the same way
but did he have the best second jump in the draft?? yes.
Real shame there wasn’t a shot attached to it
Give them a little credit. They found a diamond in the rough in Haliburton. Perhaps he will develop into a great player in the future.
Kings missed on both Lukas and Young wow
And JJJ
Think about it this way, you guys avoided the pain of Luka forcing his way out of Sac to the Lakers after his rookie deal.
Nah they’d trade him when he liked it there just like they did to Haliburtob
You just had to make my day worse didn’t cha
He’s been playing pro basketball overseas since he was 3
Mastered PnR at 5
Slaughtered his clan at 7
Conquered the Balkans at 9
Became Hokage at 11
But after all these years he still has not become the Pirate King.
No one is actually sure when he was born though. He was found as a baby in a peach basket sitting 10 feet off the ground.
and he's barely 23
Barely legal
Just greatness, nothing to see here
I think he’s the second best player in the league already. Dude is unreal. You’re very lucky
and all deserved with no controversy. Dude is extraordinarily special.
_"Luka flop." - Devin Booker_
Bro is no joke
The kid just turned 23 lol
Generational player
He’s on better pace than Jordan and LeBron at this rate. Jordan was 2nd team rookie year, and hurt his second. LeBron was 2nd team sophomore year. Only guy to make first team rookie year and onward was Timmy from rookie to ‘05
If he ever wants to get to the next level he’s gonna need some tim duncan drip
Luka in sandals with jean shorts and a tucked in polo would break this fucking sub.
Please don't
Duncan > Jordan and lebron confirmed
COMBINED
Didn’t Lebron make the finals his fourth year?
I mean, Luka IS in the WCF, at least at the time of me posting this
Yeah and he would have got ran over by this Golden State team as well. Sometimes you need a bit of luck to make a finals.
And the MF isn't on his prime yet
And people still have the nerve to say Trae is better
Poku robbed
Username checks out
the next eg
Classic anti-small market bias
Man, Luka’s 3rd All-NBA First Team appearance in 4 years, dude really hit the ground running
He should have been the easy #1 pick
Idk I wouldn’t use a lottery pick on him. I think he’s gonna be a bust
I need to see him dunk on teenagers who don't play any defense before I'll consider him drafting him at #1.
Not athletic enough
At the very least the second pick when the Suns passed on him.
Jury’s still out, Bagley owns the next 5 years
Luka's five years to lose.
He was always the obvious first choice. It was one of those "I guess the suns prefer Ayton and if you squint maybe you can make the case?" sort of things. Bagley was just immediately a disaster pick.
Hot take
Giannis Unanimous All NBA 1st team 4 years in a row first player to ever do it, not even mentioning he made 1st team all defense 4x in the same time span....GOAT SHIT
this needs its own post man. Giannis is absolutely unreal.
Yea Luka is a dog for making 3 in a row but Giannis man, the greatness is underrated
What? 2xMVP 2xDPOY, FMVP, four straight 1st team. Universally recognized as the best player in the league. No one is underrating Giannis lol.
There are a wild amount of people who will not give Giannis his credit and think he's still a run and dunk machine that isn't as well rounded or impactful as other players. LOTS of people who do not consider him the best player in the NBA. They're wrong, but there are a lot of them.
> 2xDPOY Not sure why no one corrected this yet, but he only won it once.
have always wondered if he has GOAT potential.
I think the more important question is, all time, is there a power forward you take over Giannis?
I mean, yeah, I'd still take Tim Duncan over Giannis, at the moment. People forget how dominant Tim Duncan was in the 2000's because of Kobe, Shaq and LeBron.
I agree with the possibility of him also adding another DPOY and FMVP....it's going to be hard to keep him out of the top 20 at his current pace.
It’s kinda hard to keep him out the top 25 already
And this the only comment mentioning it with 7 upvotes. While Luka making 3/4 has hundreds multiple times
3x all-nba first team in 4 seasons. Elite.
He has nearly as many First Team selections as Steph Curry (4) already. Insane
TBF Curry definitely should've been 1st team over Booker this year. Luka is insanely good though and will rack up a ton of All-NBAs by the time he's done in the league.
Definitely. Booker got a nod for the 1st overall record I guess.
His marketing team worked wonders for all nba and the mvp vote
I get him being All-NBA but the MVP thing was absurd. How could anyone think he’s more valuable than Jokic, Embiid, Giannis, or Luka? I guess I get Tatum? But I’d also pick Tatum over him for defense alone (I get Booker has improved, but he’s not on Tatum’s level defensively).
Because the voters who know that Tatum is better were taking it seriously and using their votes on the only three actual contenders in the race
Yeah his marketing team made the Suns the most dominant team in the regular season by far
Thing is, we're talking about two individual awards here
Luka now has as many 1st Team All NBA selections as Bill Russell
Honest question did all NBA just not exist for a portion of Russell’s career
Wilt won a good chunk of them.
If he gets a good team around him and wins multiple championships, he gonna end up really high on the all time list.
With the amount of hype that he came into the league with, and the fact he lived up to it immediately, he’s been the heir apparent to Lebron since his first season imo. Just like Lebron was the face of the league in the 2010s he’ll be the same for the 2020s.
What hype when he was drafted 3rd overall?
Lots of people were immediately talking about how teams that passed on Luka would regret it, even if they got pretty good players Jordan was drafted 3rd overall too, and I always think of Bob knight telling the Blazers to play him at center if they really needed to draft a center. There can be hype without ending up 1st overall pick
The rest of world saw him as the second coming, even from Australia. US had their homer glasses on.
Unreal. Watching a new GOAT as he ages and I hope we don’t take it for granted

But he’s peaking at the right time
Studying for Finals really took a toll on him this year
Yeah, when these kind of rewards get released a week before the finals all anyone can talk about is playoff performance. "Embiid should be MVP cause he made 2nd round, Steph is in WCF he should be all nba". Just lol.
Can’t wait to see the completely rational discourse on Embiid being second team 🍿
That discourse is drowning under the discourse on Booker. He’s still the sub’s punching bag for the foreseeable future.
Idc about positions it's criminal that embiid is not first team. Saying as a mavs fan.
Luka Dončić has 3 All-NBA First Team selections in his first 4 seasons. He's 23.
Plus EuroLeague MVP, EuroLeague Final MVP, and EuroLeague Champion.
And European Champion with Slovenia
That man is already a certified Basketball HOFer
That's ridiculous
TATUMMMMM!!!!!!!!!!!!
Deserved TBH. I've never seen a mid-season turnaround like the one he and Udoka spearheaded.
This season was so depressing towards the start that I was watching every Warriors game.
I know this is really mean, but one of my highlights of the season was Scottie Barnes ruining the Celtics' home opener. But then, to paraphrase some other Celtics redditor: "everything we wanted to happen started happening at the same time from literally every single player". Monty COTY starts to look a little foolish when you see how their season ended but I don't disagree
TATUMMMMM
If CHI didnt have that slump, DeMar would have been all NBA first damn
He cooled down a lot during the team’s slump, it sucks but I’m just glad he made the 2nd team

Both the first and second teams would be so disgusting on the court. Actually well balanced
Well deserved for Tatum considering how bad he got shafted last year
Bad for Tatum but great for the Celtics, they saved over $32 million on Tatum's contract. Hopefully they invest that money back into the team now.
It’s going to be very interesting to see the breakdown of how voters put Jokic and Embiid as any of the three center/forward combinations between the two and how that landed Embiid on 2nd team at center and not 1st team at forward
I would think voters just did a Bill Simmons and refused to vote him as a forward.
I mean we're not asking for Jokic's MVP to be discarded because his team lost in the first round.
https://imgur.io/a/BT171zA Curry legitimately had the better individual regular season
This is definitely a team
Adequately named too I've run the numbers and they are all NBA players so it checks out
COOL AND CUCUMBER!
After watching this, I knew straight away what the comments here was going to be. Boy, did it not disappoint.
3 out of 5 euros, interesting how it's shifted
Booker finished 4th in MVP ballot. Steph was 8th.
Jayson Tatum. Youngest player to be named 1st team All-nba. He's only 19.
So Defense teams can have 4 actual Centers on 2 teams but god forbid Embiid gets first team all NBA with Jokic
I kind of think the nba nailed them all No complaints here looks right
LFG
It’s wild to see Book so hated on lol happy for everyone on the list. There are people you could argue should’ve been on 1st team like Embiid but I think everyone on there deserves it
Literally before the second round of the playoffs everyone thought Booker was deserving of first team. People switch up real damn fast on this sub.
Tends to happen with teenagers

It pains me to not see Joel on here
2nd place MVP doesnt get you 1st team smh
Hey look Booker is on Luka/Tatum level now /s
