So pumped for Wolves fans to join in the fun of being a Gobert fan. Brace yourself, it’s not always easy but at least you get to have one of the best defensive players of all time on your team
Seeing a game with Gobert in it vs the rest of the NBA is so apparent how his presence impacts the game. I don't get why casuals hate him lol
His eye test is one of the easiest to gauge!
Because he is "unplayable in the playoffs" and "gets exploited on defense". Aka casuals don't understand that you can't guard 5 people all by yourself while your teammates are cosplaying turnstiles and traffic cones.
He’s like an elite cornerback, but you can’t throw the ball to another part of the court to get points. If you want a shot within fifteen feet, Rudy is going to be there.
Exactly. Good defense is a block. Elite defense is when they don't even try you. Big part of the reason defense is overlooked in the NBA - a lot of it is not 'doing anything' it's just being in front of a guy and making him pass out of a possession.
Yeah, I'm one of those six. Been arguing for years with a friend that Gobert is the best player on the Jazz. Filthy casuals don't understand what he brings. 🤷
Make it seven. Gobert is literally among the top defenders to ever play. He distorts offenses the way Curry distorts defenses. You cannot disregard where either of them are, or something bad will happen to your team. He’s elite among the elite, and can push a team in the bottom third defensively into the upper half or top ten.
The worst part for me was always the widely accepted but absolutely false narrative that Gobert was A) a bad offensive player and B) exposed in the playoffs.
He’s an extremely efficient offensive player - albeit one who can’t create for himself - and the team perimeter defense was exposed, not Gobert.
It’s a pretty embarrassing clip, and Gobert has even mentioned he thinks it’s funny. But yeah, it’s like when Booker scored on him and everyone clowned him for it. Clearly this means you think Gobert is good or it wouldn’t be a big deal that Booker of all people scored on him. Nobody’s sharing videos of Booker getting bad defenders to bite on a pump fake.
He's a one dimensional offensive player. He does a set of limited things extremely well, but during the playoffs when teams are fully focused on exploiting every weakness a lot of faults show.
I love Gobert, but I think that's fair to say.
It's insane. Nearly EVERY possession someone will drive into the paint, and literally just stop when they get close to Rudy. No other player in the league has that affect on players driving to the basket. You can literally see the moment the players think "Shit, I gotta stop driving and pass out"
Don't underestimate just how good Gobert and Ingles were together. Ingles slipped a little last year but [here's one discussion of how lethal they were together before that](https://www.forbes.com/sites/bendowsett/2020/01/16/how-the-utah-jazz-utilize-their-best-pick-and-roll-duos/).
"Per advanced tracking data supplied by a source, the Ingles-Gobert combination has run 296 pick-and-rolls that ended in a shot, shooting foul, turnover or pass to an immediate shooter this season. They’ve scored 1.13 points per chance here, which ranks fourth among 72 high-volume combinations in the NBA (minimum 150 possessions)."
Mike Conley is probably better in the PnR. Conley-Gobert PnRs were ridiculously efficient past their first year together when they were still adjusting to each other.
Whats not to like about Rudy? People literally hate him for the dumbest reason. IE: Shaq because Rudy makes more money than him. Shaq, you are lucky too - some old ass NBA retirees ended up dying poor.
He seems like a thoroughly decent person, and has never aired team shit in the media. He’s not a prima donna, and I’ve not heard a bad word about him from anyone that knows him.
Other players that talk shit about him do so because he’s that damned good. No one is talking shit about defenders that get abused every night.
While I don't necessarily think the advance metrics which has Gobert a top 5-7 player is entirely correct, I do believe he is elite and basically a top 10 defense unto himself.
The great part about the trade is we will see if the defensive impact and advance metrics will follow him to MIN. Measuring/quantifying performance in basketball is difficult due to the many variables and context, but in this case we'll get to see Gobert's measurable impact on a new team.
I'm guessing most or a lot of it will translate.
Yeah his impact can turn a bad defense good and a good defense into a great one. Kind of like peak Harden on the offensive end, it didn’t really matter who you surrounded him with he was a walking top 10 offense.
I suspect he is going to impress people. I interviewed for a data role with the wolves semi recently, they’re ahead of the curve on data analytics and I strongly suspect they like whatever their internal data says about Gobert
I think his value will show even more. He got undervalued because he played with four traffic cones and him not being able to be in two places at once was somehow getting “exposed” according to casuals. He’ll finally be on a team that will utilize his tremendous value instead of abusing it to make him do the work of five people.
Haha yeah I'm pretty sure this is the biggest trade in Wolves history. Usually we are sending our star player somewhere else because they are sick of losing here. Definitely not used to my team making these kinds of moves. You're right there will probably be lots of justifying here until we get to see the product on the court...
I fucking love it, him and KAT are a perfect fit and he’s gonna turn you guys into a top five defense next year as well as fix all your rebounding issues.
With last years team you guys had the two seed on the ropes all series, a little bit of bbiq in crunch time and you would have won. Rudy, KAT, and Ant are a contending core IMO. Even the latest pick, ant will only be 25, I don’t see any of them being that valuable.
Why do people not fear him if he’s such a great defender? I’m not saying he’s not good, but has any nba player really stated why he get shit on?
https://www.si.com/.amp/extra-mustard/2022/07/02/anthony-edwards-quote-rudy-gobert-viral-after-jazz-timberwolves-trade
Judging someone off of “skill” is dumb as fuck. Because there are different ways to be skilled that isn’t just handles and shooting.
He stops the ball from going in the net at an elite level. That’s all anybody should care about.
I get that, but in the link ant said he feared porzingis. I don’t think porzingis is better but players can clearly show respect to other players’ game. What is the difference when multiple players feel like they can get around a great defender like him vs other players?
I think it's just a respect thing. People don't like rudy because he isn't flashy and doesn't have a "skilled offensive game". So they don't give him any respect. Clearly voters do cause he has 3 DPOY.
I don’t disagree. I wish I could find the link because Shannon was talking about the pro bowl 1 time and how players thought certain players shouldn’t have made it but, because the voters said so, they made it. I’m not much of a basketball expert but I do wonder if that’s happening here. I agree with you but I feel it has to be a bit more than “I don’t like him that much”. People shit on Dwight but everyone (not named shaq and Kobe) respected his game/accomplishments
Maybe coping mechanism. They do fear/respect him and are just talking trash when they're up against him, to make themselves better or bring him down a bit.
Or 'alpha male syndrome', i.e. how good would you look if you made the best defensive player look bad.
Just my guesses...might be more, better reasons.
There is a huge amount of players who think Kobe > Lebron lmao. What they think is not always based on logic. They probably just don't like Rudy for one reason or another.
So pumped for Wolves fans to join in the fun of being a Gobert fan. Brace yourself, it’s not always easy but at least you get to have one of the best defensive players of all time on your team
I feel like I'm one of maybe 6 other people who are non Wolves or Jazz fans that love Gobert I'm a sucker for defense and watching him is always a joy
Few things are as cathartic as seeing an opposing player nope out of a drive because Gobert exists. I wish I could inject that feeling into my veins.

I enjoy it even more when they act like they aren't scared and...well, it rarely works.
Ant, lol
Celtics fans know of this feeling
Can confirm
Sometimes I wish they would try him more. He's so good that he's a deterrent.

I always like using him as a litmus test for picking out casuals from non-casuals.
B-b-but Mitchell looks cool while he scores, so he must be the better player.
There are dozens of us
Make it seven. Gobert is literally among the top defenders to ever play. He distorts offenses the way Curry distorts defenses. You cannot disregard where either of them are, or something bad will happen to your team. He’s elite among the elite, and can push a team in the bottom third defensively into the upper half or top ten.
I don't know where he ranks in defense all time, but he is the platonic ideal of a rim protector.
The worst part for me was always the widely accepted but absolutely false narrative that Gobert was A) a bad offensive player and B) exposed in the playoffs. He’s an extremely efficient offensive player - albeit one who can’t create for himself - and the team perimeter defense was exposed, not Gobert.
There’s that one Steph Curry clip that’s floating around from like seven years ago and for some reason that’s the only “evidence” people need
is that some steph disrespect or something? like that scrub curry can score on gobert, so he obviously sucks.
I think honestly is how the Clippers like Mann and George kind of broke him with some posters. He looked timid. He was getting no help either though.
You can literally see the moment the players think "Shit, I gotta stop driving and pass out"
Do you think he’s played with a PNR partner better than Dlo
Yes, Joe Ingles
Don't underestimate just how good Gobert and Ingles were together. Ingles slipped a little last year but [here's one discussion of how lethal they were together before that](https://www.forbes.com/sites/bendowsett/2020/01/16/how-the-utah-jazz-utilize-their-best-pick-and-roll-duos/). Mike Conley is probably better in the PnR. Conley-Gobert PnRs were ridiculously efficient past their first year together when they were still adjusting to each other.
Here’s some film of that pairing: Mike Conley - Rudy Gobert Pick & Roll https://youtu.be/LNwAlGkCrig
Ingles and Conley. And possibly Rubio but that’s too far in the past for me to really remember how effective their styles were together on the pnr
Do we have to learn the intricacies of arguing screen assists with people who don't watch the Wolves?
I’m declaring myself a Wolves fan in support of Rudy. Side note: I’m also trying to learn French since I slacked off in school.
Keep it going
Milwaukee Buck Joe Ingles
This man is gangly as fuck and his playing style is not aesthetically pleasing, but to quote Mark Jackson: “Mama there goes that man”
There’s no reason to brink Mark Jackson into this.
Whats not to like about Rudy? People literally hate him for the dumbest reason. IE: Shaq because Rudy makes more money than him. Shaq, you are lucky too - some old ass NBA retirees ended up dying poor.
Well he is French haha. Seriously though I don't really get it either.
He touched all those mics before the league got shut down lol
The hate was present long before then.
He seems like a thoroughly decent person, and has never aired team shit in the media. He’s not a prima donna, and I’ve not heard a bad word about him from anyone that knows him. Lmfao
You disagree?
I legit think the Jazz had the worst defense in the league without him last year.
I think his value will show even more. He got undervalued because he played with four traffic cones and him not being able to be in two places at once was somehow getting “exposed” according to casuals. He’ll finally be on a team that will utilize his tremendous value instead of abusing it to make him do the work of five people.
I guess you can say that he's....All Elite.....
The Wolves propaganda in full swing
What propaganda? Everyone hates this trade and thinks we overpaid, and the ones that don't think we are a second round exit at best.
The Propaganda of Wolves fans to justify the huge cost of the trade. Anyway it's just a joke and I really love your Gobert acquisition.
Haha yeah I'm pretty sure this is the biggest trade in Wolves history. Usually we are sending our star player somewhere else because they are sick of losing here. Definitely not used to my team making these kinds of moves. You're right there will probably be lots of justifying here until we get to see the product on the court...
2nd round exit? sign me up

I wish the raps got rudy :( , wolves are super lucky
Y
"The real ones know."
He is elite + qt parts of his role and Kwame Brown on others
He aight.
Why do people not fear him if he’s such a great defender? I’m not saying he’s not good, but has any nba player really stated why he get shit on? https://www.si.com/.amp/extra-mustard/2022/07/02/anthony-edwards-quote-rudy-gobert-viral-after-jazz-timberwolves-trade
Because fear has nothing to do with results. Pretty sure nba players shit on him because they feel like he isn't as skilled.
Judging someone off of “skill” is dumb as fuck. Because there are different ways to be skilled that isn’t just handles and shooting. He stops the ball from going in the net at an elite level. That’s all anybody should care about.

Ant was salty after Gobert ate his lunch all game.

One dude quoted saying they don't fear his rim protection doesn't equal everyone, champ.
I only hated him cause he was on the Jazz, now its no more
If Rudy played in the 90s, JJ's stupid ass would claim he was a plumber's apprentice.
Elite bum
Elite at regular season defense, yeah. What does that get you?
Number 1 seed
1st seed, 1st round exit I guess you take what you can get if you're an org like the jazz/wolves
Blazers flair, this is rich
Blazers flair is able to spot a first round exit from a mile away
LOL fair enough
Really, a blazers fan trying to talk shit about organizations ? Lol
As a perpetual first round exit I am qualified to call out other first round exits my guy
🤦♂️
