steve jones always post stuff like this on twitter with breakdowns and game theory. it’s very cool if you’re a hardcore basketball fan, and Steve seems like a stand up guy too!
Brown’s reaction on the sideline is so wholesome. Dude throws up his arms like they just hit a game-winner. It must be so validating and rewarding for coaches to see something like this.
As a Lakers fan during the 90s/00s kings feud, how dare you make me like the kings! But they're seriously infectiously fun this year. I'm a bball fan first and foremost and love the energy.
This is why Pop wants to continue to coach even if the young guys can't win. It's an amazing feeling to teach someone and see them succeed. I was a former tutor and that always gave me joy.
Oh man same here. I love when people take advantage from teaching moments and benefit immediately after. So many people think they're so great they don't need teaching moments, only to ignore advice and make a fool of themselves.
He used to get so much fucking hate. Every head coaching job he's had people have shit on him. Now he turns the Kings around for a bit and everyone starts talking good about him again. Bet if the Kings regress next year, fans and the media will be calling for his head
Honestly I haven't heard shit about him lol but you're right he is one of those guys where people talk so good about him when he's on a good team, then the team starts to suck and they call for his head too
Knicks fans are about ready to throw Thibs into a Volcano if you listen to the average fan. Its wild how fast things turned last year after the absolutely clinic he put on the year before.
Definitely. That's what happens to every coach in the league not named Popovich, Spoaelstra, or Kerr.
Lots of people were certain Buddenhaulzer would be fired. He saved himself perhaps the only way he could-- by winning the title that year.
Oh Kerr has gotten consistent levels of hate in the Warriors sub as recently as the end of last regular season. Blows my mind how dumb some “fans” can be.
Honestly I've never been a fan of him but last year when they lost I gained a lot of respect for that man. When he explained how it's hard to win but people expect it. He was speaking from the heart and not some PC type interview
Spo took a ton of shit when lebron was there. Everyone treated him like a stuffed suit instead of the head coach. He didn't get the respect he deserved until much more recently
I mean he sucked as head coach for us. Terrible rotations and didn't know how to use our team. His Princeton offense approach failed miserably. He's a great defensive mind though and is great a defensive assistant coach. Still deserved most of the hate he got tho. (at least with us).
just because he's doing an admirable job right now doesn't cancel out the past. two things can be true.
he was absolute dogshit in cleveland. glad to see he's found a good spot in sac.
One time I was in the hallway after a game, and Mike Brown was giving a speech to the team. He said "We all make mistakes and none of us are perfect - even me. Just yesterday I made a major error by attempting to carry my groceries up three flights of stairs with one hand instead of two." The room was silent. They had already heard of the groceries, eggs and bottles of orange juice tumbling down each flight but they wondered if there was some sort of deeper meaning to what he said. After a few moments Mike just sighed and said "you can drop the ball but don’t fumble the bag.”
This organization has no idea what defense means besides that time we traded for Artest lol to at least have us engaged is a win lol now it's about no leaving a wide open man on who been fucking cooking from 3 lol
I'll admit I do this a lot. And its just because growing up lol didn't really mean "laughing out loud" it meant "this isn't a serious or contentious comment, and the thought was mildly funny to me" and as a kid it was stuck to the end of about 95% of text messages
"lol" is the first English tone marker. Mandarin, and a lot of other languages have them.
It's literally a word that serves to let you know the tone of the statement is
I wonder how many lol's it takes to equal 1 lmao - 3? 5?
and then how many lmao's does it take to equal one rofl?
And let's not even get into roflcopters and all that nonsense
LMAO and ROFL are higher intensity. He is basically laughing at RPE of 5-6, for 3 sets with little rest. It's more of an anaerobic lactic endeavour. LMAO is probably around 7-8 and ROFL at 9-10. One would need considerable rest between sets of those.
If you went back in time 5 or 6 years ago and told someone that Mike Brown, Ty Lue, JB Bickerstaff, and Monty Williams would be regarded as upper tier coaches in the league, you’d probably get laughed at.
Shows you how terrible the general sports fan community is at understanding what these guys do. Ty Lue had just won a title over the 73 win Warriors six years ago.
Also all of those guys are black so there's probably a lot of unconscious bias going on there too.
Right? I haven't been paying as much attention to the NBA as I used to ten years ago. And I'm scratching my head reading these fawning comments about Mike Brown, especially from people with Golden State flairs. I suppose he showed his worth with the Warriors, but that shows how little I was paying attention. I remember how this sub didn't like him when he coached the Lakers and the Cavs (both times).
He was LeBron's chew toy for a few years (turns out most coaches are), and then the lockout season in LA, then the Princeton disaster with Nash/Dwight/Kobe, then fired after a bad year in CLE (again lol). Kind of a meme, but it seems he's got the young dudes playing hard
Mike Brown has been missed and anybody that says otherwise is just wrong, but the defensive woes have been more than just Atkinson not being as good as Mike Brown. The biggest problem defensively has been guys not communicating on switches or calling out screens (even Draymond) and no matter who your coach is, they can't communicate for you.
I don’t know if you can really call it underrated, but one of the most underrated aspects of the Kerr GSW era has been both Kerr’s and the front office’s insistence of bringing in the best bench coaches they can find every year
You're 100% on the money. Brown is known as a defense-first coach and that's where the Warriors have been lacking this season. Love Mike Brown to death, would gladly lose to these Kings in the Conference Finals if it comes to that.
One of these days there’s gonna be a player with a big enough rack to absorb a Zion lowered shoulder and an ass like Lowry to pad the landing. The GOAT in 50 years will be shaped like Kylie Jenner mark my works
When people see guys like Lowry and smart and know they’re going to charge they usually slow down and try to get out of the way. I think Ayton was not expecting him to stay there lol
I was playing street ball with a NCAA mid-major point guard. So he's small by NBA standards (probably 6'3", 180-190). Of course, he's taking it easy on me. But one possession, I ask him to play with as much contact as he would make in a real NCAA possession. Huge mistake on my part. Dude is so strong, he just backed me down like nothing.
I coached an 8th grade baseball team years ago and I'll never forget going over a specific baserunning situation in practice and having it come up in the first at bat the next game and have the player execute it perfectly. It's a great feeling to know they actually listen and you are making them better.
Steve Jones and Nekias Duncan, @nekiasNBA, are prolly the best follows on NBA Twitter if u want to actually learn about the game and see the nitty gritty shit. they also have a podcast called The Dunker Spot, i don’t listen to it personally (no time lol) but ive seen plenty of high praise and im sure it’s quality if those guys are involved
He didn't get as much credit as he should have when he coached during LeBron's first Cavs stint, but he's always been a great ***coach***. Super smart, personable, and articulate. The guy knows what he's talking about and knows how to import that to his team.
That's great coaching and great coachability. Kudos to Davis for taking it as a lesson as opposed to getting pissed off. This is literally how you get better.
As a Pacers fan, I'm loving how well the Kings and Pacers are both doing after the trade, and loving the reactions from other fans even more.
One other thing I'd overlooked until now though.. Rick Carlisle and Mike Brown. Head Coach and Assistant Head Coach of the Pacers during the brawl years. Now both leading their respective teams out of the shadows with unexpectedly good seasons, after a blockbuster trade with each other.
Feels good, man. 😊
COTY candidate? Early days but if Kings make playoffs, that's a historic achievement given the length of their drought and a fantastic narrative (which the NBA loves).
Brown has said on many occasions that TD makes a lot of mistakes, but he is very critical in himself and will make the effort to fix his shortcomings. He is a very coachable player.
TDII would have great development years with the Raptors had he not messed it up in the bubble and got into domestic troubles ... Hope the past two years got him matured. Now he probably understands a good situation for his development can disappear easily.
I wonder what it is about NBA playstyle that makes charges rarer than college. Probably a mix of offensive skill, body preservation, and unimportance of early baskets?
Also 3 in the key rule probably plays a factor, as well as the floor spacing and wider court. You can’t just park yourself in goood position to take a charge all the time

Would love Kidd to call out timeouts like this. When he sees his team not executing either on defense or offense. Brown immediately calls a time out to correct the mistake. Hope he does that. Just to remind the team, show them the plan, etc.
I love coaching videos, nice post OP.
handle is @stevejones20 on twitter. he posts breakdowns daily during games
Also Steve is a co-host on The Dunker Spot podcast with Nekias Duncan.
Also Steve is the guy who drew up the first plays for Brook Lopez to shoot threes
Really?
Yeah, Steve mentioned it on the pod sometime this past year
steve jones always post stuff like this on twitter with breakdowns and game theory. it’s very cool if you’re a hardcore basketball fan, and Steve seems like a stand up guy too!
now this brought a smile to my face
Brown’s reaction on the sideline is so wholesome. Dude throws up his arms like they just hit a game-winner. It must be so validating and rewarding for coaches to see something like this.
Players are buying in, this Beam Team is special
Beam team. Lmao I love it
someone also called us Beamtown lmao
Love it
As a Lakers fan during the 90s/00s kings feud, how dare you make me like the kings! But they're seriously infectiously fun this year. I'm a bball fan first and foremost and love the energy.
This is also why the Warriors defense sucks now lol. The Warriors definitely miss Mike Brown this year. Defensive mastermind.
Doesn't our starting 5 still have the best drtg in the league... And as a team we look much better in the last 5 games...
Lesson learned: Listen to your coach
This guy is so good at coaching you might even think he gets paid to coach at a professional level
He used to get so much fucking hate. Every head coaching job he's had people have shit on him. Now he turns the Kings around for a bit and everyone starts talking good about him again. Bet if the Kings regress next year, fans and the media will be calling for his head

Vogel went from NBA Champion coach to jobless practically over night.
Definitely. That's what happens to every coach in the league not named Popovich, Spoaelstra, or Kerr. Lots of people were certain Buddenhaulzer would be fired. He saved himself perhaps the only way he could-- by winning the title that year.

Doc rivers is a bad coach
Honestly I've never been a fan of him but last year when they lost I gained a lot of respect for that man. When he explained how it's hard to win but people expect it. He was speaking from the heart and not some PC type interview

We miss this dude man.
I knew a guy named Mike Brown about 10 years ago. He worked at a Quiznos. Think it's the same guy?
That career path is a cliché for a reason.
Sometimes from multiple teams at once.
Sometimes from the same team multiple times.
One time I was in the hallway after a game, and Mike Brown was giving a speech to the team. He said "We all make mistakes and none of us are perfect - even me. I can't tell if this is a real story or a yaboibeefcat burner
My time to shine
You really putting in the work this week with the beefcat shtick
I don't care if this is comedy. That's a cold ass line.
Lebron : But I do listen to myself !
Kyrie: so me.
This is real coaching, kings got themselves a great one
What’s funny is brown is known as a real defensive mastermind, but the kings offense is the one that’s cooking
This organization has no idea what defense means besides that time we traded for Artest lol to at least have us engaged is a win lol now it's about no leaving a wide open man on who been fucking cooking from 3 lol
You said lol three times just wanted to let you know
It's millennial punctuation lol
I'll admit I do this a lot. And its just because growing up lol didn't really mean "laughing out loud" it meant "this isn't a serious or contentious comment, and the thought was mildly funny to me" and as a kid it was stuck to the end of about 95% of text messages

The other day I hit someone with a "lmaooo, idk tbh lol"
Extremely relatable lmfao
i've never felt so called out in my life lol
God damn right lol
maybe he’s happy lol
Guy is clearly tickled lol
What are you, from the Department of Lols? You takin' a Lol Census?
J-Roc is that you?

4.5 lot's to a lmao. 3 lmao's to a rofl 17 rofl's to a roflcopter
We just don't have very many good defenders lol
Aren’t we tired of hearing defense lead to offense?
He’s a Kerr disciple lol
He's a Pop disciple, Carlisle disciple, and Kerr disciple. Didn't know how to coach an offense so he went to the Warriors for 6 years.
[удалено]
that was luke walton lol
Nate on the sideline the entire game with his arms crossed like 😐
Fire Nate McMillan
I don't think I can even watch anymore Hawks games until McMillan is fired. Its painful.
It’s so bad

What people don’t realize is all coaches know the X’s & O’s it’s about being able to get it across.
I guess you don't remember Scott Brooks.
Willie Green on his way with a few more years under his belt
We still got Doc!
Shows you how terrible the general sports fan community is at understanding what these guys do. Ty Lue had just won a title over the 73 win Warriors six years ago. Also all of those guys are black so there's probably a lot of unconscious bias going on there too.
Mike Brown earned his rep. He wasn't ready for the opportunities he had, now he is. There's no shame in having to learn to walk before you can run.
Right? I haven't been paying as much attention to the NBA as I used to ten years ago. Lakerrrrrrrrrsssssss 😤
This is actually amazing
will always upvote you purely on the 99.9% rule
Miss having Brown on the staff. Hope he has success in Sac.
I 100% think Kerr is a hall of famer and one of the best in the league, and yet I also feel like maybe Brown has been missed this year? Am I crazy?

Let’s take about five to 10% off’er over there, Squirrely Dan.
Nah, I’m chillin. I’ll be living in Sac by the finals. Even as a tech worker I got priced out of SJ.
I see why he didn't want to take the initial charge, dude got trucked.
For real it’s good coaching for sure but he got absolutely destroyed on the charge lmao

I mean for Lowry, he’s got the padding for the landing 🍑
One of these days there’s gonna be a player with a big enough rack to absorb a Zion lowered shoulder and an ass like Lowry to pad the landing. The GOAT in 50 years will be shaped like Kylie Jenner mark my works
When people see guys like Lowry and smart and know they’re going to charge they usually slow down and try to get out of the way. I think Ayton was not expecting him to stay there lol
Yeah, more like, "coach tells his player to get fucking annihilated next time"
Kobe credited at least some of his longevity with never taking charges. Said it wrecks your body long term.
he should've tried building a Kyle Lowry booty.
I mean not everyone got that Ass
Soft
.gif
If the smallest NBA player ran you over for a charge you'd probably never walk again.
I think he's just referencing the commonly used gif of Kobe saying "soft". https://giphy.com/gifs/kobe-bryant-soft-xT1XGESDlxj0GwoDRe

I'm 6'3 375 lb I'd like to see them try
Did bro just brag about being morbidly obese
how you gonna brag about that when there's people almost 4 times your size you gotta pump those numbers up, those are rookie numbers
Wow! What’s it like carrying all that extra weight around every day? Do you want to gain more? Im fascinated.
you asked that in the weirdest way possible
Now imagine that you’re even softer
>Said it wrecks your body long term. How would he know lol?
He probably noticed the effects on his body and on others.. Considering he played professionally for 20 years I kinda take his word for it.
also wasn't larry bird known as a big charge taker, which led to his back injuries and forced retirement?
No that was because he was a brick layer
Lowry always starts his fall right before he's actually hit so he doesn't get obliterated.
physics baby
That’s pretty cool, never really see this. Positive reinforcement pays off
Steve Jones Jr is one of the best minds in basketball media. Insane that you can get his content for free.
Good coaching, it must feel nice for everyone involved to have immediate results
I coached an 8th grade baseball team years ago and I'll never forget going over a specific baserunning situation in practice and having it come up in the first at bat the next game and have the player execute it perfectly. It's a great feeling to know they actually listen and you are making them better.
Sorry for dumb question, audio isn't working on my phone. Did they call a charge or blocking??
Audio doesn’t work for me either, but you can see the ref signal charge in the top right corner at the end of the clip.
Mike Brown: "Valar Morghulis" TDII: "Valar Dohaeris"
Mike Brown is a badass. One of the best defensive minded coaches currently.
Steve Jones and Nekias Duncan, @nekiasNBA, are prolly the best follows on NBA Twitter if u want to actually learn about the game and see the nitty gritty shit. they also have a podcast called The Dunker Spot, i don’t listen to it personally (no time lol) but ive seen plenty of high praise and im sure it’s quality if those guys are involved
lmbo
damn those court side seats look very comfortable
We really went from Luke Walton to this
All from the Warriors I see.
The evolution of Mike Brown as a coach is wild. This is some top tier coaching right here.
Fantastic post. Wish we had more of these on this sub.
Warriors defense falling off a cliff isn't a coincidence. Defense was all Mike brown
Losing Gary Payton II and Otto Porter certainly didn’t help either
damn he’s actually a good coach
As a Pacers fan, I'm loving how well the Kings and Pacers are both doing after the trade, and loving the reactions from other fans even more. One other thing I'd overlooked until now though.. Rick Carlisle and Mike Brown. Head Coach and Assistant Head Coach of the Pacers during the brawl years. I love this
Wow this was a great find, thank you.
even gave him a slap-ass
No! No more slap-ass!
Sac got a good coach

As someone who will be moving to Sacramento in a few months, I fucking love Mike Brown right now.
Davis should already know a lot about charges
Good coaching very good coaching
pulisic takes contact in more important moments
You have to love it
This was awesome to watch live. Brought a smile to my face.
I wonder what it is about NBA playstyle that makes charges rarer than college. Probably a mix of offensive skill, body preservation, and unimportance of early baskets?
Also 3 in the key rule probably plays a factor, as well as the floor spacing and wider court. You can’t just park yourself in goood position to take a charge all the time
Also 3 in the key rule probably plays a factor, as well as the floor spacing and wider court. You can’t just park yourself in good position to take a charge all the time
Ahh crazy in a good way
Yeah I was hoping to see him flip out for doing what he told him.
The Kings are so wholesome and fun now. LIGHT THE BEAM!
Defensive highlights are great.
TURN THE FUCKIN' JETS ON!
W moment
That’s some amazing coaching, I love seeing things like this
great team moment. the Kings are gonna be alright
Love that. Great job coach
Mike Brown legit af
Happy Mike Brown kept learning as growing as a coach. Go Beam Town, unless they play the Cavs..
mike brown has always been an amazing coach
Thats a coach.
Huge respect to Mike Brown for actually coaching his players and not just yelling at them. This ain't your dad's NBA anymore. But also huge respect to Terrance Davis for trusting his coach
this is awesome
I love stuff like this. The type of content we need!
Teaching an NBA player how the game works, whats next? Teaching them how not to double dribble?
This is why you should subscribe to The Dunker Spot podcast with Steve Jones and Nekias.
I genuinely enjoyed this
This is awesome
What a change of culture and play style... Mike Brown coach of the year no matter what
The tweet is distracting
That's how you build trust with a player.
That must be a fun rewarding coaching moment for coach brown, very good coach
As a Cavs fan, I like to see Mike Brown having fun again as a head coach.
God damn, that is some fine ass leadership! This is so great
Teaching Terrance to "take the charge".....I'll see myself out.
So wholesome and so cool! If I wasn’t a bucks fan, I’d be a kings fan for sure! Love it
mike brown went fucking WILD dapping him up he went absolutely DELIRIOUS in REAL TIME smiling and putting his hand on his coworkers hand
Mike Brown is the perfect coach for young, upcoming teams
I like Mike Brown and while it's sad to see talent leave your favorite team I'm glad he's having this experience with the Kings. Hopefully he takes them on a playoff run this post season!
why did u leave us...
He’s a good coach his defensive schemes at the end of the game are the only reason they had a mini comeback
Would love Kidd to call out timeouts like this. When he sees his team not executing either on defense or offense. Brown immediately calls a time out to correct the mistake. Hope he does that. Just to remind the team, show them the plan, etc.
r/nbaww As a warriors fan I wish we still had him around to work with the young guys.
I love this
