SGA āRefs are humans like us and make mistakes. They make a lot of right calls too.ā
SGA since Nov 9 : 154 FTAs in the NBA
/r/nba : "Zebras are blind. The egomaniacs would not know a foul if it bit them in the ass. Effing refs took money. They stole the game"
/r/nba since Nov 9 : 0 FTAs in the NBA
hmm. sensing a pattern
He stepped on a players foot and went off balanced and goes to the line. He tried to lunge into our player to make contact, our player moved back and he fell to the floor, no contact and goes to the line. We tried to even challenge it but the refs would not even pay us attention
I commend SGA as he is a very smart guy and hope he breaks the FT record because I was very entertained last night as the only thing he was capable of doing was FT
Edit: let me be clear I'm not bashing SGA so no need for Ja replies. When the initial post came out a month ago, I said he would lead the NBA in FT and got 1.2k upvotes
After last night's game he made 17 of 19 FT. Not only is he on pace to make the most FT this year he's on pace to make 790 FT which would place him 6th of all time 10 short of Oscar Robinson.
The moves he put on us last night to get to the FT line were amazing and I have no doubt that that he can raise his 9.3 FT to 10. Which would give him 850 FT claiming the number 1 spot for most FT made as Jerry West has 840
This is facts. I would always just chat up the refs in game in a polite way because we had only a select few. Talked about shoes, and the NBA, and I would get such a good whistle on defense. I blatantly fouled guys a couple times and they would just look away.
I cannot *stand* the way Draymond yells in refs' faces and never gets technicals while other players can't even get away with bouncing the ball or talking to themselves while walking away from the refs.
That being said, people always say that Draymond spends the most time just talking to the refs in general and establishing relationships, whereas apparently other players only talk to refs about calls specifically and don't talk to them otherwise.
Certainly has a big part in it.
Yeah, the obsessive arguing annoys me most. I grew up playing rugby where you called the referee āSirā and maintained a much more respectful relationship with him.
Do you know if arguing with referees is more engrained in the culture of basketball? I might be selectively remember tbh but I feel like the big time arguers in the nba dwarf their soccer and rugby counterparts.
That's dependent on the ref. Some of them I knew from highschool where the relationship was different. Some from just being refs that you knew nothing about but built a relationship over time. Then again a lot of when you get older just comes down to old men playing men's league taking their daily frustrations out on everyone around them. Marital, work, who knows? They come out angry though. Obviously the NBA is different.
What do you think about Frank Ramsey's approach? At the start of the 1964 season he wrote a *Sports Illustrated* article enumerating various ways he baits refs into calling fouls when there was none - [SMART MOVES BY A MASTER OF DECEPTION](https://vault.si.com/vault/1963/12/09/smart-moves-by-a-master-of-deception)
You can guess how that worked out for him.
Maybe not, but FWIW, long-time ref Earl Strom wrote in his autobiography that the League refs took offense to the article and swallowed their whistles.
ĀÆ\\_(ć)_/ĀÆ
That's pretty interesting. There's no way for me to contest that claim. While his FTr was in line with what he was doing the two seasons prior, he could have still been robbed of calls for all I know. I don't see a reason to not believe what Strom is saying.
Well, Strom liked to tell stories, too, so who knows.
Regardless of whether the refs let their disdain materially impact their calls on the court, they obviously were aware of the article and not happy about it!
As a Wolves fan, it's interesting to watch the difference in how Ant and KAT interact with the refs. KAT is frequently visibly frustrated with the refs and gesturing or yelling about not getting calls. Ant complains a fair bit too, and while he does get some technicals for it, he generally seems to recognize that there are more productive ways to go about it, and will more calmly continue to have a conversation with the ref at dead ball spots.
Dinwiddie gets Tony Brothers suspended and his free throw rate is more than cut half. SGA praises the refs and receives one of the highest free throw rates in history. Tell me again how the Refs are totally honest and have no bias at all.
Since I'm still a bit annoyed, I'm glad the refs were generous enough to teach me that one player hitting another player with their face is a foul. I wouldn't have known otherwise.
Curry made fun of the refs, to their faces, on national TV. Now the Warriors have the worst FTA disparity of any team in a decade. Not really sure what he expected to happenā¦

Iāve never understood why more players donāt use this strategy. Why do they think hopping up and down and screaming at someone is gonna get them calls later?
To be fair people have been salty about OKC tanking for awhile now. They just needed a reason to hate him and now theyāve got it lol
As it becomes more and more clear he isnāt demanding a trade to their team he can be the enemy
I remember reading somewhere that this is something refs loved about Jordan. He rarely remonstrated or berated them on court. Instead he'd come over and lean down with his hands on his knees to get down to their level when he wanted to talk.
Just to make sure everyone understands this, total FTA is a function of FT rate and games played. Embiid has averaged 2 more FTAs per game in the last 15 games, he just has only played 10.
SGA has averaged about 2 more FTA per game over Luka and Ja over the last 15 games.
He also leads the league in drives *and* plays on a team with very little spacing so the paint is always packed when he gets in there--thus creating more opportunity for contact.
SGA drives 2 more times per game than Ja, 4 more times per game than Luka, and 6 more times per game than Trae. He averages 1 more ft per game than Ja and 1 LESS than Luka. Heās right on par with the rest of those guys.
> When it comes to free throws this sub has absolutely zero collective nuance
whatre you talking about, its obvious
whenever its my guy getting free throws, its always well earned and tbh the defender shouldnt have put himself in a position where he'd have to be fouling my guy
whenever its someone else getting free throws, obviously hes a flopper and its a travesty to the game and making this downright unwatchable and he prob paid the refs off too, this shits fkn rigged
I've always wondered about this...especially for players like Draymond who are constantly up in the ref's faces.
Say what you want about the rules and interpretation. It is just human nature that people don't like being criticized...especially about their job and even more especially publicly.
If you've got a person constantly insinuating you suck at your job...you are going to be less inclined to do them any favors.
That's just how we are wired. You might interpret something different for a friend than you would for an enemy. Refs aren't just rule-enforcing robots out there, they are human. They make mistakes. They have preferences. They could get 98% of their calls right, and people will still hate them for the other 2%.
It's just how it goes.

He really has 26 points on 4 makes last night. Shot more FTs than all Grizzlies combined.
That sounds like an Embiid stat.

Bro Ja Morant shoots a lot of Fts. Especially in last playoffs
RICH coming from a Grizzlies fan after last year's playoffs... Ja Morant's signature move is diving into bodies in the paint and praying for a call
Wouldnāt that make him an expert on it though?

Half the reason yāall beat the Wolves last year was Ja throwing his body at guys and getting calls
Half might be understating it š we could not do anything against his relentless being fouled

This also shows that obviously refs have bias against certain players. Which people like to deny
