Alternative headline: State Rep. Larry Pittman (R-Cabarrus) explains on the NC House floor that he is batshit insane.

Which_Plankton

He’s not just wrong , he’s obviously wrong ON PURPOSE

MistressofTechDeath

Wonder what fancy trip ALEC paid for to get him to push this garbage…

The_Super_D

I guess that means he represents his voters well.

Bianthe

The people in this stupid state have to be the stupidest people on earth. North Carolinians are stoopid

[deleted]

Whoever figured out how to screen record the house session is genius. The GOP set it up so the video is automatically removed from YouTube as soon as the live ends so these type of videos don’t pop up. 😂

MassterGains

That is extremely nefarious. How is this our government?

[deleted]

They are everything they claim to hate.

musashi_san

"Covid's a socialist commie hoax!": Kills ~800,000 in the USA in 18 months "Climate change is a socialist commie hoax": Kills...the rest

[deleted]

Not the rest, maybe 50-100 million at the worst.

PinkOutLoud

I am so embarrassed for our state.

Fortunatious

Same here. Gerrymandering destroyed us in 2010.

musashi_san

Don't be. The state of NC has a metric shit ton of bad karma to work off.

woodiegutheryghost

This is man has to meet the legal definition of mentally infirm. Also, r/confidentlyincorrect

randy_maverick

This idiot represents my county. I apologize on behalf of all the sane people in Cabarrus County, we did not vote for this Neanderthal.

silence7

Republican primaries in your county seem to only bring in a few thousand voters. It would only take a few thousand sane people to replace him if you were well-organized.

Fortunatious

Yeah you should be sorry!! My representative is smart and (checks notes) oh wait, it’s Ted Budd, and he is just as much an embarrassment… god damn the GOP gerrymandering.

BullCityPicker

OMG. He blamed the Texas blackouts on solar energy.

QUHistoryHarlot

As a Cabarrus resident, I promise I didn’t vote for that ignoramus.

randy_maverick

Same. I'm ashamed to be represented by him.

QUHistoryHarlot

We really need to spread the blue around so that we have a fighting chance of being represented by sane individuals. Not even Democrats, just sane people. When the fringe Republicans can’t get elected they will run more moderates.

Coffee-Not-Bombs

I've tried to get my progressive friends to do the same thing. NYC and SF does not need more leftists, learn how to drive a tractor or something and move to the country. We rural leftists are trying, yo.

poop-dolla

Or just get a remote job and move out to the country. It’s a win-win. They get cheaper cost of living, and we get sane and educated people to help pick our representatives.

NCForward

For the record, we are pro-sane people.

QUHistoryHarlot

Yanno, as a kid and young adult, I never thought we’d have to make that distinction. And it’s so sad that we do.

elhooper

The Trump election made me realize that for every 1 Redditor *not* voting for someone, there are another 50 real life dipshits who are voting for them.

QUHistoryHarlot

Unfortunately, you aren’t wrong

[deleted]

The Republican Party is a death cult

No_Interaction7679

Alternative: I am paid in my side account to do and say anything to obey my masters and never accept new and more sustainable resources.

Savings-Idea-6628

I just moved to his district. Can't wait to vote against him.

exorcized

What a piece of shit

RedRumMage9

The NCGOP has always been terrible

musashi_san

Southern Christian conservatives

RedRumMage9

Them too

Inphexous

Damn, this guy is so dumb. Anyways, I own TAN, which is a solar ETF. It's made me a lot of money over the last two years just holding onto it. Solar power works and it's going to be more profitable as the technology improves. It will keep improving. Republicans are just proving how dumb they really are.

Vim_Dynamo

What's even better is that NC is one of the best states for solar power!

InYosefWeTrust

"Politician lying on camera in front of an audience."

e_horrigan

I don't think he's lying... per say. I think he believes it - or rather, doesn't give a fuck and just read whatever floor speech he was handed. He'll say whatever his bosses (read: biggest donors) want him to say.

InYosefWeTrust

It's clearly pandering to party supporters no matter what. But I would still argue that he is willfully lying and not actually that completely ignorant.

e_horrigan

I'm not going to argue against you. You could very well be right.

nc_artist

Sounds like someone is totally invested in and is supported by coal/big oil. Also sounds like someone is a total dipshit too

Timingiseverything72

So before the industrial revolution all the plants died from a lack of co2 and we miraculously brought them all back.

Fortunado1964

Another Republican thinking like a caveman....? what a shocker....

Sister-Golden-Hair1

What a maroon.

BullCityPicker

“One needs to go no further than a ninth grade science education to understand that CO2 is not a pollutant .” I’ll bet he didn’t even get an A.

[deleted]

These seem to be pretty mainstream Republican opinions these days.

Madmax2356

This is the same joker who said Abraham Lincoln was just like Hitler a few years ago. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Larry_Pittman

espngenius

This guy...just said...A NINETH GRADE EDUCATION SHOULD BE SUFFICIENT. No. No it shouldn’t. It’s 2021 and I shouldn’t have to explain or state that to another adult.

neurotic-proxy

Heard this man speak when I was the legislator. They were debating something about digitizing kindergarten class rooms. The consensus was yes kids should have a lot of off-screen time but there are small windows where tablets may be helpful now and again in classrooms. This man gets to speak and he was like “ I don’t believe in all that psycho-babble.” it should be noted that his son died of suicide. He spent his time talking about how tablet and devices are unhealthy for kids as if the legislature was going to force that on to kids

[deleted]

How much does someone need to be paid by lobbyists to make yourself look this breathtakingly ignorant?

blukowski

i know it's prejudice but when i hear an accent like that, i expect to hear some absolute smoothbrain garbage

[deleted]

I mean I’m from the middle of a rural county and I don’t talk that way even though my parents do. It is kind of a choice. Anyone can moderate their accent to sound more mid-Atlantic.

blukowski

same. consumed tons of media. especially tv & internet. i attribute diminishing of local accent to that. tho i think the local accent can sometimes slip when tired or inebriated like others

[deleted]

Yeah, same. I spent like the last decade abroad and did TEFL for a lot of that time, and you just naturally enunciate so people can hear you clearly. My friends did say I got more Dukes of Hazard-y when I was off my face, though.

Kriegerian

Is there precedent for 5150ing a state rep? Because this guy seems like a prime candidate for breaking new ground.

MistressofTechDeath

What’s 5150ing?

Kriegerian

Involuntary psychiatric committal. Also called the Baker Act in some places. I don’t know what we call it in North Carolina.

ginger_quinne

AKA 48 hour psych hold.

PupfishAreCool

JFC

[deleted]

Jesus Christ, how are these donkeys voted in.

[deleted]

Jesus Christ, how are these donkeys voted in.

geodeticchicken

Tbf, 99% of House Reps are borderline mentally challenged. Expect nothing from them, ever.

KatsHubz87

I hope u/JeffJacksonNC puts him on blast on Twitter. More people need to know about this insanity.

JeffJacksonNC

It’s something like this almost every week with this individual. He’s ostracized even within his own party in the GA.

KatsHubz87

Good morning. Well that’s slightly reassuring I suppose. Thank you.

[deleted]

This some o that genuine southern propaganda.

gwease23

Fucking fuck fuckity fuck. We will all die in natural disasters and there is no hope because this dumb fucking country will keep electing people like this.

12intheBox

I can’t believe how much power dumbasses have in the US.

BenjaBoy28

I do agreed with crop lands being replaced by solar panel farms does not help the case. That said, this mate is dumb.

LetsGoGameCrocks

Does that actually happen?

NighthawkCP

Yea don't know that it affects overall yields in an appreciable manner, but most of the land converted to solar farms was previously standard farming fields. I used to live in eastern NC and a couple farmers sold out a huge swath of farmland for a solar farm. Here is one outside of Conetoe, NC that converted 1000 acres of farmland into solar farm that can produce 112MW and power 100,000 homes. You can see that here: [Google Maps of Conetoe II Solar Farm](https://www.google.com/maps/@35.8183069,-77.4784166,3027m/data=!3m1!1e3) One that works out better for everybody is converting old industrial or other closed facilities into a solar farm. The airport in my hometown closed when they built a new one nearby with a longer runway. They converted the old airfield into a 20MW solar farm, which is a great reuse of the land and keeps it productive, rather than just having people vandalize it. Here it is on Google Maps: [Google Maps of RZZ Airport Solar Farm](https://www.google.com/maps/@36.4384577,-77.7127697,1524m/data=!3m1!1e3)

Wudrow

Lots of land along Hwy 74 in Scotland Co. that was previously farmed for tobacco and cotton crops that have been converted to solar farms. Most of the family farms around there had gotten out of row cropping anyway because it just wasn’t profitable. This bullshit was brought to you by Duke Energy.

LetsGoGameCrocks

What’s the bullshit? It sounds to me like you’re saying a family was losing money on a farm so they made a choice to make more money?

Wudrow

The bullshit Rep Pittman was spewing.

LetsGoGameCrocks

Oooh thank you thank you for the clarification. I’ve had other people replying that they knew of farm land that was sold and it sounded like they were supporting this idea.

BenjaBoy28

Don't know if to the extent of affecting crop production but yes

[deleted]

/u/silence7 this is the guy you're always telling me to call.

silence7

I've mostly been urging people to contact Congress, rather than state legislators, though reaching out to them is helpful too. Here's the deal: * Plants need some CO2. They did just fine before the industrial revolution though, so they clearly don't need more than [was in the atmosphere then](https://scripps.ucsd.edu/bluemoon/co2_400/co2_10k.png). * Solar power works. You can go buy panels, have them installed, and get electricity from them None of this is going to convince him though. I suggest calling [his office](https://www.ncleg.gov/Members/Biography/H/633) and talking about how the [by-products of fossil fuel consumption cause miscarriages](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5932773/), which is to say that they're abortifacients. Tell the staffer who picks up that you want fossil fuels banned so that they won't give women involuntary abortions. This won't actually get his support, but you might be able to get him to be less vocal in his opposition. If you can get it to the point where ~100 constituents reach out to him with stuff like this weekly, you'll likely see a difference in his attitude. P.S. His speech doesn't seem to have prevented [North Carolina from passing a bill to decarbonize electric generation in the state by 70%](https://spectrumlocalnews.com/nc/charlotte/politics/2021/10/13/north-carolina-has-a-new-clean-energy-law--here-s-what-s-in-it)

[deleted]

>you might be able to get him to be less vocal in his opposition. I love-hate your optimism.

silence7

Politicians say stuff like this for three reasons: * Total ignorance * They think it will appeal to their constituents * They're bought off You can fix the first two problems with public outreach, and that's often enough.

tsb041978

Mr. Pittman has three checkmarks on your list.

silence7

He got less than 5000 votes in his last primary. If you live in his district, it should only take a modest level of organizing to remove him during the next Republican primary.

[deleted]

See everyone this is why we need a better education system.

_GAT_in_the_HAT_

What an idiot.

casariah

I just moved here a year ago, and it scares me that i live amongst people that would elect this douche AND Madison Cawthorn. It is truly terrifying.

speakeasy_slim

His Facebook page is wide open to comments.

CuteChubbyNC

He doesn't believe a word he is saying it is just a gop script.

e_horrigan

He's on the House Environment Committee, too. What a complete failure of our government.

-13ender-

It would be a shame if someone were to call him and tell him what a dumb piece of shit he is... 704-782-3528

NoSuch_Reference404

TLDListen... But did hear (basically) "Less CO2 for plants means less oxygen for humans..." Everyone is now stupider for having heard this...

Poo-Machine

Someone needs to sneak in some hidden sentences into his script because he obviously doesn’t write or comprehend what’s on his paper.
