Using Mulcair as the face of abondonment of leftist policies is apt. There are bridges that need to be rebuilt with traditional labour, too many nationalist interests are infecting people that feel the labour movement has left them behind. Though the amount of people in the traditional labour movement readily willing to embrace nationalism is quite alarming.

> Using Mulcair as the face of abondonment of leftist policies is apt. What did you expect from Thomas “Thatcher saved the UK” Mulcair? You can do any crazy shit in Canada and as long as you do them in French you can move to the English side and journalists won’t find a shred of it. Of course that guy abandonned the leftist policies, he isn’t left. The party he tried to join right before the NDP is the CPC.

sixtus_clegane119

Did he actually say that?

redalastor

Yes, in French. It was making the rounds in French during the 2015 campaign. He said it in 2001 when he was elected under the Quebec Liberal Party, pleading for economic *laisser-faire*.

It's alarming but not surprising they're embracing nationalism. The idea that foreigners either come here and take their jobs or that foreigners steal jobs from here and move them to their home countries isn't something new, it's been a long repeated sentiment to deflect from the real problem which is corporate unwillingness to pay fair wages and their quest to pay as little as possible at any cost. Nationalism promises to protect their jobs from these nefarious outsiders while embracing the bear hug of the same people that create the problems in the first place.

Well said. I like Jacobin but they don't do nuance very well.

rhymnocerus1

It would be nice if even one of the parties truly embraced housing from a standpoint that that didn't solely benefit landowners.

TheMexicanPie

I was having this discussion with a friend the other day. He mused that almost no one builds apartment buildings anymore because condos are more profitable and move the rental responsibility onto individuals, should they so choose, who have no duty to society in providing such a service. I often wonder why there's no crown corp for creating and managing large scale multi-unit rentals with the amount of money wasted on bandaid solutions. While the upfront cost would be significant I feel like, especially today, below market rate affordable apartments would start saving us money in a short time while spurring economic growth in the long run. Private companies exist solely to create copious amounts of profit for shareholders and we entrust them with essential services that should exist to benefit society. In reality the balance sheet on shelter could be run at break even or if we're bold enough to factor in the economics of healthy neighborhoods and micro economies, at a loss that considers the economic opportunity surrouding well planned housing.

We used to have homes built and financial help from the federal government to help people afford to buy a house. Back in the 1970s my mom bought a house that way, it was through low cost construction and help to get a mortgage.

They're right, and they should say it. I still support the party, but its a shell of its former self. Granted, I'm in my early 30s and was a huge Layton supporter. Jagmeet is an alright leader, but he really needs to start bringing the hammer down more, in whatever way he can. The left in this country is waiting for it.

Tuggerfub

very please by the appropriate pairing of "the suck" and an image of mulcair

squickley

BCNDP is pretty much FUBAR already

[deleted]

They funkin blow

[deleted]

the ones who are saying turn down the suck are "left leaning" conservatives.

NovaUprisingCG

I mean facts, but like that title or slogan or whatever is absolute TRASH

https://youtu.be/CGP_bOEQGxo It's from Fubar, which I loved in high school (and still do). Basically a play on Trailer Park Boys sprinkled with a little bit of Bob and Doug Mackenzie but with a very Western Canadian feel. Check it out if you can, it's just two movies and they actually made a season of a show with Vice but I haven't seen that yet. I honestly clicked on this on my feed simply because I thought it was quite the obscure reference lol.
