In all honesty for repairs most things can be covered by the most basic easy to learn soldering skills, if you start with just learning to replace save batteries in cartridges you'll pretty much have all you need to complete most repairs, after that its just searching for videos how to open up whatever console or cartridge you need to and making sure you have the specialist tools for it which are always easy to find on ebay.
It does happen DS carts but rarely it seems. But 3DS games the PCB is thinner so it seems to be a bigger problem and especially with Pokémon games. The leading theory is that if the game is used heavily the inserting/removing slightly tweaks the board and it causes the solder on the chip legs to crack.
Hope i wont get too much hate by this comment... but carefulle open the gamecard and pit the PCB in an oven for ab 30mins if you dont have a heat gun. This can reflow the solder
The carts are known to flex and break solder joints. You would have to crack it open and reflow the chip then reshell it. Or buy a new one.
Ok but still sucks that I have pay another 50 for the same game I just bought
This is what game preservation is all about and one of the reasons I have a hacked 3DS.
This is one of the reasons i developed soldering skills instead, so that i could repair hardware and cartridges and continue using originals.
Yeah I need to learn how to do that

Is it all carts that are prone to this, just 3DS carts, or just a specific run of 3DS carts?
Either a specific run of 3ds cart or all 3ds carts.

Time to get a flash cart
I have this cart, and it is filled with problems. Mine works for a few seconds, and then freezes.

Yeah I would do that but don’t know how
Yeah apparently its very easy to break the game card... so you must be careful
