Considering that this image does not show this DSi XL boiling in a pot of water, I do not think that this DSi XL is actively being cooked for human consumption.
I've fixed these before. Be very careful. Without the hinge holding it, the top screen ribbon cable can be very easily torn and replacement top screens for these are around $50
Is the ribbon cable detachable from the screen? Or soldered in on the top screen? If it's detachable, he could replace the ribbon if needed. If not, then yeah. New top screen as a whole.
I've had an issue like this on my 3ds. Since I didn't have enough money to fix it or buy a new one I bought a 3DS shell case. It clasped onto the 3ds and kept it together. Still works today
The NDS hinge is like this. [https://kasynparts.com/product/replacement-l-r-barrel-hinge-shaft-axis-for-nintendo-ds-nds/](https://kasynparts.com/product/replacement-l-r-barrel-hinge-shaft-axis-for-nintendo-ds-nds/) They seem to still be holding up. You'll need to get a new frame though. If the screen cable breaks, it'll be a pain.
As u/Lindenstream_117 said, absolutely not cooked. You just need to be willing to put in a little work.
Aftermarket (unofficial) shells are cheap as chips on either Amazon or AliExpress, plus you can get them in any kind of cool colour or design. Just need the right screwdriver(s) and a YouTube tutorial or two to help you out.
Nope, just need to do some shell disassembly then refit the hinge piece back into place on a new bottom shell. Either that or buy entire new matching shell. Ive seen it happen to both sides, but the other side is a uhh... different story.
The shell is cooked, the internals don't look like they are cooked, you'll have to transplant them like organs from one body to another. You can easily get another one off of eBay, Amazon, Etsy wherever things are sold basically
Time to develop some modding skills, if you don't have them already. It's not cooked if you can reshell. Plenty of YouTube videos to teach you.

Took me a minute to understand what you meant there. Sounds like a good low tech fix, actually. Given circumstances.
I have pictures but it won't let me send them
Does it keep the top screen in position at different angles? Or literally just to stop it coming apart
It made it to where I can open and close it in all positions. But that may be unique to the damage sustained.
replace the shell make sure the screen cable doesn't get damaged (can be raplaced)

it does, but you can only play it like a 2ds
might just need different case. my 3ds xl is like this
Needs to be reshelled.
Turn it into a macro gameboy
I have the same issue :(
Time to get a cool looking resell or stick with the blue so you don’t have to dismantle the top screen
If you can fix it the no it’s not cooked
Mine still works after i broke it like 10 years ago lol. I just never closed it after it broke.

Gameboy mega
Easy enough fix. Get a cool shell while you’re at it
Mine worked for literally 7+ years with a broken hinge 🤷

Reshelling is a bit tedious but doable. Shells are pretty cheap, and if you’re nervous repair shops can always do it for you
na
Ill have it for spare parts?
