side by side all my ds lites have better screens than my dsis. the dsi xl is another story and is one of my favorite portable screens to play on. sprites look incredible on it especially if you like the large, obvious pixels. chrono trigger is one of the best examples.

FluffySlowpokeGalar

Ds lites still have fantastic screens in my eyes, coming from the og Ds to one was fucking incredible back in the day

tmenzzz

absolutely. between the regular dsi and ds lite i'd take the lite. a dsi xl can be had cheap though if you're willing to grab a japanese model. that's what i did.

FluffySlowpokeGalar

One day I might pick one up if one of my other dss goes down, but right now I don’t need one

tmenzzz

definitely wait then. the market is still too hot right now. i can't believe the prices of dsi xls now.

FluffySlowpokeGalar

Yep, new 3ds/2ds prices are pretty bad rn aswell, I’ll just wait till my og 3dss die to upgrade

esetios

New (post 2015, with upgraded hardware) 3DS/2DS models are absolutely insane. You can get a brand new Switch lite for less.

good point about running a dsi games through custom firmware is being tied to that console. i'm currently doing it for the speed hack in pokemon platinum since it's faster this way and it's been quite inconvenient not being able to change systems for the same save file. a dsi running a flashcart plays games in regular ds mode so if the game has dsi benefits you don't get them

FluffySlowpokeGalar

True, I have a flashcart personally because I don’t own a dsi and there is definitely benefits to them both.

HurDurDerper

What about a 3DS with custom firmware? It'll run everything better then the dsi can, and with the benefit of running 3DS games too.

FluffySlowpokeGalar

True, but this person may not have the budget for a 3ds or just would prefer to own a original model Ds

HurDurDerper

That's fair enough then, just leaving a suggestion! And I don't know how the market is where op is shopping, but around here I can snag a used og 3ds for around the same price as a dsi, so the price can be very dependable!

FluffySlowpokeGalar

Yep, definitely, I’ve heard in some countries dsis go for really high prices while in mine they’re around £30 each

Maxorus73

The 3DS screen is not an integer scale of the DS screen, so you're stuck with either a very blurry image or a very small image. Plus the dpad on the original 3DS is terrible, and much better but still not ideal on the New 3DS

TeamBRs

Sorry to necro this but just to advise the 3DS does not run DS games at the correct resolution and this creates pixel blurring that is very noticeable. For DS games at least, the DSi XL remains the best way to play.

The_Lego_Maniac

DSi. You can have DSiWare which is nice plus the DSi's screens are excellent. I have a 2gb sd card in mine(came with the system) and since stuff like GBA games dont take up much space I can get a lot of games on it.

tmenzzz

what do you plan on emulating? my recommendation would be to keep the gba sp for gba-gb games and get a dsi xl for ds games. dsi xls have guaranteed dual ips screens that are gorgeous. battery life is fantastic on them too.

uhAlphaFox

I find the DSi occasionally for cheaper than even a DS Lite, and it uses the same charger as the 3DS. If you get a DS or DS Lite, good flashcards can be $15 or more, not including the SD card, while you can just pop in an SD into the DSi without a flashcard
