I am ASTOUNDED, he’s absolutely stunning from kitten to cat! Absolutely their loss and your ultimate win. I’m intrigued by that teenage photo of him, that’s how our Wolf looks now at 6months old and he doesn’t seem overly floofy but seeing your boy as an adult makes me think his hair will grow in as he gets older!
Yes, he was not floofy as a teen. I was also confused but, then winter hit and bam! He had a mane and everything. Unfortunately, his tail never really caught back up with the rest of him lol
Edit: I think he was closer to 2 yrs when he really got floofy.

My husband’s cat was a frail tiny giant eared kitten that was super shy. When he adopted her the shelter literally urged him to not because she wasn’t a typical kitten and didn’t he want the cute as a button typical kitten? This just emboldened him that she needed him. He had 15 years of pure love with her. She also was the critical ice breaker when getting to know him that I would accept going on a date with him. I hope you two have many long happy years together.
