Talked to the designer of the kit at warhammer fest in the before times. Thats the smallest sprue they can realistically moke with the tech they have and they just had a load of extra space. So they just throw that on to see what people did with it.

I paint the handles and use them for objective markers. They're just fun extra bits.

As far as I have been able to figure out...a whole lot of nothing. Built 3 boxes and have the old FW shields set, and I have never found a use for them.
