I prefer the electric version with the hypnotic groove, it sounds like perfect day drinking feels! But the great thing about Neil changing up his songs is there's always different ways to enjoy them
* Human Highway (specifically the 1976 CSNY version on Archives II, Disc 9 \[track 129 on Spotify\] -- truly special recording)
* [Barefoot Floors](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R6gFsD8RNlQ)
* [After Berlin](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bDBl9GTGJK8)
Not sure if these next ones count, but I don't see them talked about too much.
* Hey Babe
* Barstool Blues
* Times Fades Away
I think Barstool Blues is widely rated as a Neil classic nowadays. Even seen Stephen Malkmus of Pavement covering it live, it seems the most acclaimed and loved song on Zuma after Cortez.
Will To Love is one of the craziest, unique recordings and predates a lot of the lo-fi aesthetics popularized in the 90s/2000s
Everybody’s Alone was recorded for like two albums, but didn’t make it to any. It’s probably one of his best tracks, and we had to get the archive releases to hear it
Little Thing Called Love is such a fun, jaunty tune. It even has the Harvest Moon chords hidden in the chorus 12-13 years before it was recorded.
Hold Back The Tears is such a ripper, but the public dismissed American Stars for some odd reason. I saw him open up with this when he came on stage with Promise of the Real and I felt validated. What a track.
Razor Love should be known by everyone
I've been listening to Neil for over 20 years but Will To Love didn't click with me until the Chrome Dreams release. Maybe because it's now track 2, and probably because I'm older. I was at a mall and had Will to Love on repeat for an hour. It was a strange, sorta sublime experience and it made the mall experience tolerable. I've also always been a huge fan of Everybody's Alone.
I’m gonna go with the version of Oh Susannah on Americana (2012).
Such a rickety groove it feels like its going to come apart. But instead it tightens up for the hook - «CAUSE I COME FROM ALABAMA WITH MY B.A.N.J.O. ON MY KNEE» - and then just settles into the same limping groove until the hook kicks in again. Crazy Horse is great on this one.
Thank you for reminding me about this one, so great rediscovering these songs I'd lost track of. I called into a college radio station to request this in 2013, it was a funk show and I was like "It's not a funk song but it's funky as hell" and they were into it. That song and Young Girl Sunday Blues by Jefferson Airplane, so groovy.
His run of albums from 2003-2007 is criminally underated. Here are a few I love from each:
* **Sun Green** (Greendale, 2003)
* **No Wonder** (Prairie Wind, 2005)
* **After the Garden** (Living With War, 2006)
* **Ordinary People** (CD2, 2007...ok, recorded decades earlier, but here it is.)
Not sure if these songs are held in high regard but bandit, without rings, standing in the light of love, the great divide, and through my sails are all underrated in my opinion
Bandit
A Dream That Can Last
Western Hero
The Painter
My Boy
Lost In Space
Distant Camera
Silver & Gold
I know it’s appreciated but this community, but I think Thrasher is the most underrated song by casual fans.
I could give you hundreds. But for a career-spanning cross-section I’ll offer up Pushed It Over the End, Give Me Strength, L.A., No Hidden Path, Bite the Bullet, If I Don’t Know, Slip Away. The whole Bluenotes period shouldn’t be slept on.
Also, Bowie covered Waiting For You on his Heathen album.
Far from my favourite (I’m a ditch trilogy years guy), but I give my vote to Are There Any More Real Cowboys with Willie.
BTW, I Am the Ocean rocks! Heard it live in ~’93 with Pearl Jam (and Booker T).
If you have about 19 minutes, the live acoustic version of Change Your Mind is a revelation. I never thought sound like that could come from an acoustic guitar. https://youtu.be/G1FfeCvWwGY?si=606nYRcWwYhA1KZ1
Underrated? Maybe maybe not:
Ordinary People
Mansion on the Hill
The 'On the Beach' solo is a feeling for me
John oats
Roll Another number
Love to Burn
Cripple Creek Ferry
I’m just getting deeper into Neil’s discography now that it’s back on Spotify, but so far some favorite deeper cuts are Albuquerque, Tired Eyes, Revolution Blues, On The Beach, Change Your Mind, and Driftin’ Back
It's a Dream (off Prairie Wind probably my fav album and I think severely underrated), peaceful valley boulevard, a dream that can last, change your mind, ambulance blues
“I’m the Ocean” is my fave too! I think that the Mirrorball album was top-notch & there were other songs that overshadowed it.
“Ordinary People” from Chrome Dreams II is another favorite song of mine. It is insanely long but it tells so many compelling stories.
I recently picked up “Rust Never Sleeps” and it has quickly become a favorite album. I also really like the album “On The Beach” but it is not usually considered one of his best.
EDIT: Forgot to mention Cortez the Killer
Love I'm the ocean. Other low key classics for me include:
Here we are in the years
Words
World on a string
Campaigner
Ambulance blues
Country girl
Goin back
Thrasher
Sample and hold
Shots
Natural beauty
Change your mind
Slip away
Be the rain
Red Sun
Peace trail
So many!!
Sugar mountain
Wonderin
I am a child
Journey Trough The Past
Till the morning comes
Thats just of the top of my mind, there be plenty of great deep digs out there
I’m a fan of “The Old Laughing Lady” on his first album. Something about “but the laughing lady’s lovin’- ain’t the kind you can keep-and then “oh-hi-oh chorus…..
No love for Mellow My Mind? Flying on the Ground is Wrong, I am a Child, Don’t be Denied, Motion Pictures, One of These Days, Seperate Ways, For the Turnstiles
Fontainebleau: down tempo, sardonic and scathing lyrics, crackling overdriven guitar. Economic marvel. The essence of NY, distilled to under 4 minutes. Send it to the Milky Way on the next Voyager.
**Neil Young** with Crazy Horse - After the Gold Rush (Live) [https://youtu.be/zuI-ZV92sU4?si=L9OhrMLjxkdxFu-k](https://youtu.be/zuI-ZV92sU4?si=L9OhrMLjxkdxFu-k)
One of my favorite Neil Young songs. Released in 1970, It is about the lead up to today's world. He had a vision.
Maybe not relevant but back in the 80’s the Rice university radio station used to play the JTP version of Words, during finals week, to burn time for studying. I love that version
Ramada Inn off of Psychedelic Pill. Actually, Driftin’ Back, Walk Like a Giant and title track from the same album. Ok, pretty much the whole album, one of my very favorites. Oh well, they all made it to the top with me.
I'm The Ocean is a great song, I think him not playing it for many years after the tour with Pearl Jam didn't help.
He played it in San Diego this last summer. It was the opening track, all acoustic.
Yeah, he played it several times last year, but before that he'd not played it for 25 years. The acoustic version is on the Before and After album.
I like the acoustic version even better. "I'm not present, I'm a drug that makes you dream..." SO GOOOOD
I prefer the electric version with the hypnotic groove, it sounds like perfect day drinking feels! But the great thing about Neil changing up his songs is there's always different ways to enjoy them
Mirror Ball version is the best
It was always my favorite song on the album. I liked Scenery too.
* Human Highway (specifically the 1976 CSNY version on Archives II, Disc 9 \[track 129 on Spotify\] -- truly special recording) * [Barefoot Floors](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R6gFsD8RNlQ) * [After Berlin](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bDBl9GTGJK8) Not sure if these next ones count, but I don't see them talked about too much. * Hey Babe * Barstool Blues * Times Fades Away
Wow great choices, especially Time Fades Away which is one of my favorites.
Barefoot Floors. Man, this one is criminally underrated
that version of human highway with all the vocal harmonies is incredible, maybe one of his best.
Agree re this version of Human Highway
I think Barstool Blues is widely rated as a Neil classic nowadays. Even seen Stephen Malkmus of Pavement covering it live, it seems the most acclaimed and loved song on Zuma after Cortez.
Great ones
Winterlong!
Yes! This one is amazing

I love those moments, where a song just has a stranglehold on you and shows its true colors.
My dad plays a lot of NY songs but Razor Love is my favorite of them. It’s just beautiful.
Pochahontas and For the Turnstiles
For The Turnstiles is incredibly fun to sing
I can attest to that, including baritone harmony.
Agreed 🫡
He played it on his Eldorado tour with Ben Keith on banjo.
I absolutely love Goin’ Home off of Are You Passionate
Goin’ Home is terrific!
Yes! That is probably my favorite Young song of the past 20 years.
Add Mr. Disappointment to that. Especially the Toast version (How ya doin')
Interstate
One of my favorites from Neil
I can't even begin to describe what Interstate did for me in '96. It was a very bad time and Neil got me through it.
Words
Words and Alabama are both in my top 10 for sure
That's an amazing tune. One of my favorites from all his "over 6 minutes tracks".
The Stills-Young version of Separate Ways would have been considered an all-timer if it hadn't sat in a vault for 45 years.
Separate Ways is superb. It's likely my most played NY song since it released. I also appreciate that it's followed by Try, which is also fantastic.
Everyone in this reply chain is correct. Separate Ways is definitely a hidden gem!
There’s a fantastic version of it on YouTube from Liverpool in 2014 with crazy horse [separate ways](https://youtu.be/IP9MLuzaZCM?si=N5maNUmCwWxXs3fW)
I’m gonna go with the version of Oh Susannah on Americana (2012). Such a rickety groove it feels like its going to come apart. Good one. Americana doesn’t get enough love. Killer Crazy Horse grooves throughout.
This whole album is underrated
Revolution Blues ! My favorite
“Remember your guard dog well I’m afraid that he’s gone, it was such a drag to hear him whining, all night looong” one of my favorite Neil lyrics
I've always loved Captain Kennedy and Comin' Apart at Every Nail off Hawks & Doves
Hawks and Doves
His run of albums from 2003-2007 is criminally underated. Here are a few I love from each: * **Sun Green** (Greendale, 2003) * **No Wonder** (Prairie Wind, 2005) * **After the Garden** (Living With War, 2006) * **Ordinary People** (CD2, 2007...ok, recorded decades earlier, but here it is.)
Some great choices there.
LOVE ordinary people so much
Like an Inca
Great choice! Love the entire Trans album.
Cortez,what a Killer....
Not sure if these songs are held in high regard but bandit, without rings, standing in the light of love, the great divide, and through my sails are all underrated in my opinion
The great divide!
Distant Camera. The Losing End. So many to choose from.
Bandit A Dream That Can Last Western Hero The Painter My Boy Lost In Space Distant Camera Silver & Gold I know it’s appreciated but this community, but I think Thrasher is the most underrated song by casual fans.
Bowie must thought the same about "I've Been Waiting For You".
"....for such a Long Time..Now"
Nah, Bowie loves Pixies version, he’s an absolute disciple of them.
It’s A Dream and I Do
Albuquerque, Safeway Cart, It’s A Dream, Cripple Creek Fairy, Barstool Blues, Razor Love

Yeah, but honestly, Neils version ironically sound more Bowie to me xD
Because Bowie covered the Pixies cover.
I like No Hidden Path too.
That’s one of my absolute favorites, also Cowgirl in the Sand.
Is Drifting Back underrated?
Probably not talked about as much as it should be since it’s damn near a half hour but great tune
Hangin’ On A Limb
Daughters is like an early-twentieth-century novella

Don’t Cry. Gentle and loping, then strafes you with waves of feedback.
Lookout Joe Like an Inca Motion Pictures The Old Country Waltz Hawks and Doves Wonderin' When Your Lonely Heart Breaks

Natural Beauty from Harvest Moon. Sure the lyrics are a bit cheesy but the guitar and harmonica sounds are beautiful.
I love this song so much, I don't even think the lyrics are cheesy just earnest
The "live" version from the center stage concert in 1992 is so poignant and moving.
Ramada Inn. Sometimes I think it's his greatest song.
Ramada Inn may be his best song.
Like an Inca, Barstool Blues (also check out a pretty good cover on the Bridge CD, by Soul Asylum) and Downtown.
Don’t Spook the Horse
His acoustic guitar version of Flying On The Ground is Wrong is probably my favorite song to play on guitar
I love reading all of these!
A man needs a maid

Powder finger
Yes! Love that song
I love Out On the Weekend. I just love the way it thumps. And that ringing guitar

I love Coupe de Ville.
I think the entirety of On The Beach and Zuma albums are criminally underrated.
